Try to Listen To a Few Tracks First.......2007-08-07

Pretty much everyone has said what's needed to be said about the latest Tomahawk record. I was hesitant to buy it reading some of the first intitial reviews. Many of the postive ones were from blind Patton nuts and the critical ones mentioning aspects of it being "silly", especially with the chanting, well, I was able to envison at the time as how this could be potentially very cheesy. However, I purchased it anyway and glad I did.

Art of any sort (good art) is about taking chances and exploring different directions, if you don't, then you don't grow. The guys decided to go with a particular theme here, personally, I think it works. I'm by no means an expert on Native American music, but I think they pulled it off and didn't feel at any moments that it come across as "silly" or benign; personally, I dig it. However, with that said, I strongly reccommened that you listen to the album or several tracks before you buy it. As this album does have a concept and a particular style, they don't deviate from it (for the most part); you're either going to like it or you're not. It's really that simple. If you like it, you'll have a great new album to add to your collection with a unique sound, if you don't, well, it's just not for you.

Tomahawk Have Found Their Groove.......2007-07-31

Up until Anonymous, I have found Tomahawk to be a good but easily forgettable band. I always kind of wondered exactly what Mike Patton was doing as a member of Tomahawk because their self-titled album and Mit Gas, while enjoyable, weren't very significant in my opinion. I admit that I tend toward weirder things, and I was very satisfied by Anonymous. Tomahawk has always carried a Native American image but they finally filled the boots. The entire album is full of sounds you've never heard and haunting melodies that create incredible atmospheres and imagery in your head. Anonymous isn't the immaculate artistic experience that, say, Patton/Kaada's Romances is, but it is definitely different, new, surprising, and better than almost any music being released lately.

Trying to pin Patton down is your first problem.......2007-07-30

Ok, so like I just said if you're trying to pin Patton down, you're an idiot and obviously not a real enthusiast. So if you fall into this category don't buy this album. Or better yet buy this album and give Patton your money cuz you deserve to be taken if you think you can ever predict what he's gonna do next. Enough pontificating and on to the music contained on the album herein. It's amazing. Patton and the gang reworking Native American songs. Patton said 'Duane that is a great freakin' idea'. And the rest is history. Insanely good, even if it you don't think it's an according to Hoyle 'Tomahawk sounding' album. When the rest of the inane music community starts releasing things this original then maybe some smack-talking will be warranted but until then shut your mouth and listen to Patton open his and be in awe.

Something Different.......2007-07-30

Call it 3.75 stars. I too was very unsure about this new musical direction. Based on what I read about the disc and fans opinions I had some serious doubts. After my first couple of listens I must declare that this is adventurous and different. Do we need another Mit Gas? No. Why walk twice down the same path? I am glad that these guys tried something "out there" and inspired. It is not perfect and a few moments might be silly, but I like the vibe of it. And I am not easy to please. Yeah, maybe they could have involved some other people such as actual Native Americans, but probably that would have just made it all very silly. On the other hand it could use a little more tribal drumming from Native Americans. But it is what it is. 60% great stuff. 40% "Meh" or "Ooops." Nice effort at something unique. Still more original and daring than most stuff that came out this year.

Genius.......2007-07-26

I bet you all the "anti-cool" cool people on here bagging this album are the same ones who will accuse other bands of "selling out". They're now saying they'd be happier if Patton sold out and did some corporate rock crap (in which case you can bet they would accuse him of selling out.) If he'd been into that he could have joined INXS when they asked him to replace a deceased Mike Hutchison.

This music is absolutely brilliant - I cannot stop listening to it. My first listen, I thought: "Mike! Where are the SONGS?"

After 3 listens, when the chants and rhythms began to sound familiar, I could not listen to any of the other music I'd just bought. This album is the best thing I've heard Patton do. Sometimes sinister, sometimes light, mystic-sounding, it's almost a religious experience. Thank God there are artists around who are willing to experiment still.

I cannot put it down.....!.......2007-06-19

When I first purchased this album in Sept.2006, I haven't been able to put it down since.
It took a few "listens" until I really appreciated this great piece of work by Rick. It appears to give me something a little different each time I listen to it. I had thought that there was nothing better than Water's "Amused To Death" but boy was I wrong. What a rich and profound album this is! You get a little bit of everything FLOYD here and it just all comes together perfectly. The begining (underwater sequence) is unbeleivable in Q sound right up until "A Thousand Furry Toys" where the story now begins. You will think that YOU are in a coma but you are quickly brought out of it and now realize that being a child, as in this case, an abused one, is being tossed about by it's parents into a bizzar world of obscurity and demise. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel for this poor child and in the end reaches for the sun just like a "banner unfurled and gently blown, and then before your wondering eyes a self you've never known".
Thanks Mr. Richard Wright ! Let's do it again........soon.

excellent solo project from pink floyd keyboardist........2007-04-01

like fellow floyd member, david gilmour, rick wright does not stray far from the pink floyd formula, and that's fine. lots of lush sounding and spacious instumental passages adorn these songs. silence is ofter lurking there at the edge of things. very listener friendly. lots of excellent percussion provided by drummer manu katche, and some fine guitar work from tim renwick and dominic miller. sinead o'connor provides outstanding vocals on two of the songs here, and mr wright himself has a pleasing soft lilt to his voice, which is effective throughout. highly recommended for those who love that pink floyd sound.

A superb effort from Pink Floyd's Rick Wright.......2007-01-26

Many bands have members who eventually put out solo material. In regards to one of the biggest acts of the 20th century, Pink Floyd's keyboardist Rick Wright gives us Broken China. After years of solo material celebrated from other members such as Syd Barrett, David Gilmour and Roger Waters it's nice to see Rick put together this collection.

The thing of it is, its one of the most refreshing musical endeavors you could ask for. Floyd fans old and new could enjoy the sound and artistic vision of this album. Anyone with an appreciation of something different, magical and creative could find something good here, if not great. This ambient, soulful and somewhat dreamy CD also has its share of powerful and driving songs that like so much of Rick's contribution as Floyd's keyboardist, gets sweeter with age and retains a timeless feel to it. Recorded in 1996, Broken China is somewhat of a concept album that is based on Rick's wife's battle with depression. Sinéad O'Connor is the lead vocalist on the tracks "Reaching for the Rail" and "Breakthrough". The album cover art is also done by Storm Thurgeson, who is famous for his artwork on most of Pink Floyd's studio albums.

Broken China features 16 tracks that still retain some Floyd sound, although for me I feel it stems more from "Momentary lapse of Reason" than one of their earlier studio albums that featured Roger Waters at the helm.
I won't go over every track, just highlight some of my favorites. Track 6 is "Satellite" and does not feature any vocals but has a groovy beat with some jazz feel to it. Don't let that fool you, this is still a far-reaching solo with a lot of great percussion, and includes a signature guitar piece that changes things up a bit throughout the song. Track 8 is customary as "Interlude" and though it only clocks in at 1:16 is a beautiful piano piece that also features some deep bass line as well. Track 9 is one of my favorites and is called "Black Cloud". A powerful display of sonic sound, it starts out with ambient tones before launching into a crescendo of emotional spears that never quite break into anything, but slowly fade out into a soft medley of an ending. The CD ends with Track 16 in "Breakthrough" and as mentioned, has vocals by Sinéad O'Connor. The song is beautiful in melody and no nonsense in its lyrical approach. Even if you don't think of yourself as a Floyd fan, that is okay. Don't let my references to the band scare you away, for this is still Rick Wright and features some of the most amazing sounds and tones that I think anyone can find appealing in one way or another. It's not just a "keyboard" album, as if features a high dose of various instruments that all sound marvelously executed.

The world of music today needs more "Broken China".

Overlooked By Many Buffett Fans.......2006-11-09

Sales of new Buffett albums continued to slip with "Somewhere Over China" as nothing on this disc got much if any airplay and the album tanked at the cash register. It remains one those albums that many Buffett fans do not own. It is a pretty average album for Jimmy, but there are a few gems to be found on it. Al of the songs were written by Buffett except for the final two tracks "Steamer" and "Slow Boat To China". Of the originals highlights include ""Where's The Party" whose lyrics suggest that the party life may not be all its cracked up to be. "Its Midnight And I'm Not Famous Yet" may be one of the best songs about Las Vegas ever written, and rocks harder than Buffett normally does. The title track "Somewhere Over China" is another good one telling the story of a world weary traveler. "I Heard I Was In Town" is a great little country tune with clever lyrics. This album has a melancholy feel to a lot of it especially compared to the good time party tunes of many of Buffett's other works. It is one of Buffett's most overlooked albums, but worth owning if you are a fan.

Grows On You! .......2006-06-02

Of late I have been adding many of the lesser known Buffett discs, such as this one, to the collection. My goal one day is to have them all. Most of the critics want to put the stamp of mediocrity on this one. Don't let them! Okay, there was no big hit, but there are so many incredible songs here: "I Heard I Was in Town," "Steamer," the title track, and "Salome." "Where's the Party," "If I Could Get It On Paper," and "Slow Boat" are great tracks. This is money well spent. The sincerity of Buffett's lyrics and the storytelling really blow me away--I feel like I know these people!

Gotten better with age........2006-03-28

I purchased this album back in 1982. In fact, it was the first Jimmy Buffett album I ever purchased. I had been riding my bike to the library and constantly checking out his albums but this was to be my first purchase with my first ever paycheck when I was 15 years old. I brought it home and sadly I was disappointed. I have now through the years purchased everything in Jimmy Buffett's catalog of classics and have managed to catch his live shows 22+ times. I recently pulled out my old copy of "Somewhere over China" and realized that this is an album that has gotten much better with age. Its a reminder of a Jimmy Buffett that recorded music for himself and a select group of what I would refer to as "The truly hip". Today I feel that he lost that connection with his audience, although he is still a great performer, I would really like to see him put out another album that that has a sound that "Somewhere over China" captured.
This is a good album stock full of ballads, has a very relaxed atmosphere and truly deserves a title like "License to Chill"!

Great Undiscovered Classic.......2005-08-29

This collection deserves more acclaim. I agree with the rater about "Steamer." I believe it was written by a guy who used to play around Nashville with the best-named band ever, Wolves in Sheep's Clothing. There are songs anybody who is ambitious or interested in writing can identify, but the rest of us can enjoy, too. I also love the version of the standard, "Stars Fell on Alabama."

Quite enjoyable and varied.......2007-08-04

I wanted some music to accompany a slide show I was making of China trip photos. I am happy with this purchase. Many of the songs are very old and take an educated palate to appreciate (not a palate weaned on American pop tunes) but I also found some snappy ditties that work fine for any audience, and work well with my slides.

Enjoyable and lovely, but "traditional"?.......2007-07-27

This delightful CD is surprisingly melodic and Western. It is "traditional" only in the sense that the instruments are traditional. Otherwise it sounds heavily influenced by the Occident. Which is not to detract from its beauty or the virtuosity of the musicians. One would have appreciated more informative liner notes.

Excellent Chinese Orchestrial Music.......2007-02-14

If you're only going to get one album of Chinese music, this is the one for you. Most all of the pieces on this album are winners.
After a while this music all blends together in that one piece sounds like an extension of another, but I love this album.

Great Music for T'ai Chi.......2006-08-27

I was looking for appropriate background music for practising T'ai Chi and this album was pretty good. The best cut for my purposes was "The Moon Mirrored in the Pool". It is smooth and slow, just right for T'ai Chi.

Japanese Taiko.......2007-01-11

I was first introduced to this throught a PBS program about taiko in America. Taiko is nothing but pure hardcore drumming. These aren't a bunch of guys sitting on their --- tapping out rhythms. They're beating the crap out of these drums. I'm sure there are youtube videos out there, it's a must if you've never seen how they play them.

This is my first taiko cd. As the other reviews said, the first song is the best, it is absolutly intense. The whole cd is great though. If you work out, this is a perfect cd to listen to while doing so. If you can sit still while listening to this, I'd be very surprised. Buy it, you won't regret it!

Interesting New Drum Sounds.......2006-05-15

I play an African Djembe, and am always looking to find new styles of drumming to incorporate into my playing. I'd been wanting to buy a Taiko CD, and picked this one at random. The first song is absolutely amazingly rockin'. I've listened to the CD twice, and while the first song leaps out and grabs you, I didn't find the rest of the CD to have that same crazy energy. Don't get me wrong - the rest of the CD is enjoyable, but the first song just blows the rest of the disc away.

Edited to add: So I've been listening to this CD for a while. I'm really not very crazy about it. The first time I heard the first song I really liked it, but it got old really fast. The selection of percussive instruments on this CD just bores me. There's just not enough variety for me - but then again, I'm used to listening to a lot of African music where you have djuns, sangbans, djembes, bells - all with a wide variety of different ways to play them. All in all, I suppose that this is still a good cd, but it's just not for me.

Amazing Japanese drumming...!.......2004-09-27

Another fine album by one of the major stars of the modern taiko drumming scene... Hirota's innovative compositions are audacious and ambitious; the skill and precision with which his ensemble perform them is nothing short of amazing. There are modernizations and meter shifts that may be questionable -- depending on your personal tastes or inclinations -- but for taiko fans, even those who prefer a more traditional style, this disc is a must. This is the music being played at its highest and most challenging level... Recommended!

One of the best Taiko collections I've heard.......2004-09-04

This is without a doubt one of the BEST taiko CD's ever. We put this on (to test a new subwoofer) and the sound of the drums was clear, the contrasting sticks and bells came through sharp and defined. The rhythms are surprisingly jazzy and modern.

There are nine cuts on this CD: the first seems VERY long but it's actually shy of 8 minutes--some are longer, 9:31 and 10:46 . The first cut Harvest is by far the best, though I like the almost 11 minute Heart Beat a lot as well.

The thundering big drums have traditional rhythms, but merge into melodic "songs" of a more modern nature. The drums are of varying sizes and tuned to different tones, and there is auxiliary percussion (sticks on the drum frame and some other percussion as well) but the Taiko dominate.


I find Taiko very energizing and I play this CD to lift my mood, especially if doing household tasks. If you like percussion, this is absolutely a must-have cd. We were VERY impressed.

The way Chinese ensemble should be played.......2006-06-05

Except for the insertion of the cello which is obviously not a chinese trad instrument, the ensemble plays all pieces masterfully. Even with the cello the emotion of these chinese masterpieces are most beautifully performed on this cd. The sound quality is superb. I feel nauseated when listen to mixmatched traditional instruments with modern big sound westernized electrically special effected symphonized performance. There's places for improvisation and places for masterpieces. For oriental musics, art is a (only) way to express mood and emotion (culturally those people don't express their feelings in any other way). When listen to these musics I would suggest the listener let their feeling go with the music. Better yet if the story behind the music is understood. This is another aspect of the beauty of this cd, you could even feel the whole ensemble move as one unified sound from serene to excitement to lamentation to joy to sorrow to nostalgic to strength. Yet, true to its oriental tradition, each individual instrument clearly expresses its own beauty in each piece. It is not lounge music. It is not symphonic music. It is traditional chinese masterpiece.

ps. imagine people in asia would say the same thing about western symphonic music: that they are for elevator, oh no, elevator is not that popular in those poor third world countries so, they are for sleepy time :)

Frequency and Dynamic Range.......2004-05-12

If you prefer easy listening music or music with a minimum of high and low pitches and a minimum of loud and soft passages, much like music played in lounges, this album should please you. If you like Beethoven symphonies or Mingus jazz you would probably be happier with these albums: "Phases of the Moon"(full orchestra), "Classical Chinese Folk Music" or even "Music from the People's Republic".

Not one of the best..........2002-03-27

I dissapointed in quality of album, songs too modern, not tradition enough. For real fan of chinese classical, sound not enough Chinese!!! Much song too westernized. You should like to try album of the title "Rain Dropping On The Banana Tree". It has the old songs actually record in old time, not much western influence, is more traditional opera and chamber music. Earliest date for song recorded on that album is 1903!!!!

Those songs reminded me of my young schooling days sitting next to a musical hall, where beautiful trad Chinese music was practiced non-stop. Little did I know that those days influenced me well into my adulthood, was I lucky to have day dreamed away in my math class, being carried away with those fabulous musical pieces. Thank heavens.

This CD is everything you could hope to find in an example of traditional Chinese music. It soothes, exites, and stirs the imagination. Buy this one first.

I wanted some music to accompany a slide show I was making of China trip photos. I bought four CDs of music spanning traditional to contemporary. This is my favorite for just listening to. The songs are varied and don't all sound the same.

Good tunes, mediocre arrangment.......2007-07-21

I would say that most of the songs are of good potential, but there is just too much western and electronic instrumentation for me to honestly call it traditional/classical chinese music. I like the CD overall, some tracks are very moving, a few are so electronic they're annoying, but almost all have at least some "foreign" instrumentation. It isn't a bad cd, but I would call it "easy listening", and not "classical chinese".

Fine for relaxing the car ride, but just like much of the dreadful so called "celtic music" flooding the market, this sounds like an alblum designed more for the incense burning crowd, and less for the ethnomusicologist.

I was, overall, disappointed by this CD. There are many good reviews here, but they generally overpraise. Tracks 4 through 8 have too much synthesizer for my ears. A major highlight is track 9, The Crab and the Egret, but interestingly, the flute is accompaniment to the wondrous Chinese percussion. Disappointingly, the CD is only 40 minutes long and left me wanting more tunes without synthesizer accompaniment.

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06

Nowadays many classical musicians move to 'cross-overs' between Western classics to exotic works, and Chinese musicians and composers pioneer in cross-overs from Chinese music to Western.
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qin, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.

One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06

One of the most original CDs I've ever heard. This CD is full of incredible music. Yang XueFei plays with sensitivity, creativity and passion.
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.

Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26

I am a classical guitar student, and an over-the-top consumer. So I have a lot (many dozens) of classical guitar CDs. They are for the most part quite good, but they tend to blend. I might be able to distinguish Tennant's Rodrigo or Barrueco's Scarlatti, but too many guitarists play an awful lot of the same repetoire, and they play it quite similarly.

This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

Excellent real Chinese music.......2005-10-11

Traditional instruments, historical recordings. "Some Ways of Touching the Ch'in" is a demonstration of zither technique. The brief liner notes mention that the final track is a piece for orchestra with solo for small oboe; well, "orchestra" in this sense is the Chinese version with percussion and stringed intruments -- I think of the accompaniment to the puppet show in the movie "To Live". The pipa is featured on several tracks, such as "Ambush". Soloists and the name of each instrument featured are listed for each track. This great CD is an hour in length.

Un Westernised.......2005-04-07

I've had the vinyl version of this for years. Unlike most of the recordings of Chinese music that I have heard this shows no Western influence whatsoever. At times the music approaches the sparse textures more commonly associated with Japanese art music. Features excellent recordings made by John Levy in the sixties, and the sleeve notes (with the lp version at least) explain all the tracks.
Beautiful sounds, and probably an important ethnomusicalogical document.

This CD is boring!.......2004-08-07

It is so boring that I listened to it for only one time, and after that I don't have any desire to play it again anymore. Especially the one called "Some Ways Of Touching The Ch'in", even though I have been speaking chinese all of my life, believe me, I couldn't understand what the lady was demonstrating. I am so glad that I wasn't born in China during the 11th century.

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.
