Album Description

1994 reissue of compilation of early recordings from 1977 byWarsaw, an early moniker for the Mancunian act Joy Division. This pressing features 17 raw, but respectable cuts, including five bonus tracks: 'Inside The Line', 'At A Later Date', 'Gutz', 'The Kill' and 'You're No Good For Me'. Others include 'Failures', 'Leaders Of Men', 'They Walked InLine', 'Novelty', 'No Love Lost', 'Transmission', 'Living InThe Ice Age', 'Interzone', 'Warsaw' and 'Shadowplay'.

Album Details

The influential UK post-punk outfit Joy Division used the name Warsaw for a time during the 1970's, prior to encountering a legal wrangle with another group of punks called Warsaw Pakt. This 1999 issue was largely recorded in May of 1978, shortly before they had to adopt their new moniker and it was co-produced & engineered by Brian Auger. The bonus tracks are a five-track demo recorded in 1977.

5 out of 5 stars takes me back..........2007-03-31

This was a great find - it takes me back to those angst filled teenage years. As a major Joy Division fan, I was thrilled to get this CD and get a feel for their evolution as a band. Get New Order - 316 if you want to hear an early New Order still sounding like Joy Division.

4 out of 5 stars the joy division demos.......2007-02-20

I have always been a huge fan of all Joy Division derivitives, including New Order, Monaco, and Revenge. This album is the boys from Joy Division before the name change. If you thought JD was raw and stark, try this one on for size. They polished a few of the songs off for later re-release, but this great album captures the pure essence of the band, with Ian is all his glory.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with Daniel - Joy Division at their rawest and best.......2006-03-15

Joy Division was a rock band. That comes through on this album. The sound is raw as is the recording but for me it's the best one, the least compromised one the most rebellious one. Great band never to return. One of those inexplicable "clicked".

5 out of 5 stars Buy it, Love it, Be it.......2005-12-12

I owned this album for two decades as a bootleg tape that got passed around the Berkeley punk scene in the early eighties, and it never failed to become the favorite music of anyone I turned on to it. Joy Division always seems to sound better (to me) at their rawest, and the lower sound quality adds an edge of doom not found on the sanctioned version (of course this could just be that it reminds me of scratchy records). Either way, if you're a fan of "Closer" or New Order, I'm pretty sure you won't dig this. If you were immediately hypnotized by "Unknown Pleasures" like I was at fifteen, this is essential.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for JD fans; this stuff ROCKS!.......2005-08-17

This is great for many reasons:

1) It's a good chance to hear the band as it just started to shed its early punk sound and become much darker-sounding. Its also a chance to hear them without any fancy Martin Hannett production trickery.

2) It's a remarkable document of just how much Ian's voice changed in a very short time. This is a snarling, snotty sounding, angry young man at the mic - nothing to even hint that in two years he'd be crooning like a despondent Frank Sinatra on songs like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Heart And Soul". Listen to "Walked in Line" on this album and compare it to the version from "Still." Its hard to believe they were only done a year apart.

3) It's got a couple of what i feel are the best versions of Joy Division songs: "Shadowplay," "No Love Lost," "Leaders of Men," and "Novelty" all sound better here, even in their somewhat rough recordings, than any other version I know of.

4) Only 3 of the 11 songs here are included on the box set.

5) For sheer comic value, you have to love the last five songs - these are the earliest, rawest recordings of Joy Division. Sometimes I just crack up listening to these incredibly primitive cuts - "You're No Good For Me" could have been done by any number of booze-soaked louts. But even as early as July '77 Ian's lyrics were already chilling: "Human beings are dangerous and they call me in the dark" (At A Later Date), for example. Plus you get the immortal "Warsaww!!!" howl at the beginning of "Gutz."

This is a very good "punk" album and a very interesting Joy Division album. Highly recommended.

Understand from the get-go that label retrospectives are spotty affairs. Rare is the label that's free of stiffs, and Stiff Records' raison d'état was to serve as a refuge for castoffs, including a fair share of flaccid acts. The off-center likes of Nick Lowe (having recently fleed the misbegotten Brinsley Schwarz), Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis, and a very young Elvis Costello found a home with Stiff in the '70s. It wasn't a punk label, though it boasted the Damned; it wasn't a ska imprint, though Madness and Desmond Dekker recorded for the company; it wasn't a power-pop or pub-rock haven, though a number of Stiff's leading lights (Dury, Lowe, Costello, Dr. Feelgood, Dave Edmunds) fell into those categories. And it wasn't terribly long-lived. This imaginatively designed four-disc overview definitely loses momentum toward the end, but there's a humble enchantment to an overwhelming percentage of tracks here from label mainstays, the semiacclaimed (Devo, Graham Parker, Lene Lovich, the Pogues), and uncelebrated (Mickey Jupp, Mick Farren, Jona Lewie). -- Steven Stolder

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Historical Time Capsule.......2006-12-06

Look over the list of artists on the CD, the ones you recognize - go out and buy all their CD's. While STIFF was great in the late 1970's as the conveyor of UK/Euro indie music - most of the best artists moved on - what's left is an interesting time capsule of that the last 70's and very early 80's. There is reason Humphrey Ocean & the Hardy Annuals or Mick Farren are forgotten. At the time, they were loud and brash and a nice antidote to the soft rock era of the 1970's but from that emerged Costello, Nick Lowe, and hundreds of artists you can name & remember ... and of course, leaving most of these guys & women behind ... so if you're a completist collector, you'll want these tracks but for listening beyond the names you recognize? Not so much. They are pretty much out-dated minor league stuff and the sound quality is not that great here so for a lot of reasons, you're better buying artist specific CD's or a more accessible collection of pre-new wave tracks that contain the "one-hit" wonder tracks anyway.

3 out of 5 stars If they're dead we'll sign 'em.......2006-07-09

Disc 1 & 2 are the whole reason to buy this, with a few cuts from disc 3 thrown in as a bonus. Probably more economical to have your old 45 RPM versions converted to CD (and keep those goofy quips engraved in each record's blank space next to the label).

5 out of 5 stars Action Packed.......2001-08-01

Stiff is one of those wacky labels that always seemed to sneak by just under the pop radar.

I received this set as a gift a few years ago, and couldn't be happier about it. This collection is so full of unknown bits of whimsy and little-known cuts by more popular artist that it starts to become more of a treasure chest than a "best of."

Ian Drury of "Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll" fame appears as vocals on several other cuts including "Kitchen at Parties." This collection is full of simmilar fun little nuggets.

So much of the "alternative" music scene that was largely contained by British borders seems to be archived here, and it's fun to tap into it. Americans (such as myself) who always thought that the band Madness was largely a one hit wonder will be surprised by the spastic "Baggy Trousers," a song I enjoyed so much I have purchased several Madness CDs since hearing it.

While Elvis Costello originally got his start on Stiff, he has only one song here - probably a god thing, as we all have a good idea what he sounds like - leaving more room for the lesser known artists of Stiff.

There is a charming wackiness to this collection and to the whole Stiff attitude. This is a great collection for exploring what the Brits were doing while we tollerated Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Oh! Special bonus: There is a fabulous (FABULOUS) cut of Desmond Dekker's "Isrealites" on disc three. This along merits purchasing this set.

5 out of 5 stars Instantly enjoyable........2000-09-05

Strange...I remember trying to search for this boxed set earlier in the year and coming up with nil for my efforts. Then, after accidentally finding it in a New York record store and acquiring it right away, I find it on here. Must be my mind playing tricks on me.

In any case, I'm not old enough to have lived through the era from which these songs sprung, but the appeal of the music easily traverses the generation gap. I haven't even yet explored all of this set and it's already been some of the most fun listening experiences I've had while listening to "older music": Elvis Costello, The Belle Stars, Nick Lowe, Kirsty MacColl...and personal favourite, spunky popster Rachel Sweet. Vivacious and highly entertaining. My only complaint is that the liner notes are somewhat flimsy. Though full of the kind of tongue-in-cheek humour that, apparently, Stiff Records was famous for, the result of the non-journalistic approach is that there's very little real information on the music, the history, the label, and the context, hidden by the cheeky writing and witticisms. I for one would've liked some more detached, professional journalism to inform me of the significance of this music such as in that Amplifier article I had read (which led me to look for this boxed set in the first place). So on the packaging front, much is left to be desired. But the music is uniquely appealing, a world of its own.

5 out of 5 stars best of my life.......2000-04-07

I was in my teens when this kind of music was played on the radio , I lived in ex Yugoslavia and I was reading a lot about the new wave and all those stuff i England. I loved those groups but I never actually had a chance to listen all those recors ( I Lived in ex Yugoslavia for Gud`s sake ) , now I lived in Sweden and have money to buy records but I am not 13 , 14 , 15 years old anymore and the music doesn`t mean EVERYTHING to me. This box remaind me what music can do with your life and how it is to be 17 again . By this one , no metter how old you are , this is history.

2 out of 5 stars Good tracks ... bad mix.......2006-12-06

This is the third Back to Mine release I've heard. I thought that about half of the tracks on the CD by Everything But the Girl were pretty weak, but I liked the way the whole thing flowed overall. Orbital's CD didn't always flow, but there were some interesting surprises in terms of track selection and how the whole thing was put together. Liam Howlett's mix has neither of these things going for it. It doesn't flow (at all), and anyone with a semi-decent knowledge of popular music will already be familiar with most of these tracks. "A Message to You Rudy" is a great track, but it's basically Ska 101, and anyone who's listened to college radio at some point during the past 20 years already knows it. The same goes for "Peaches" by The Stranglers and "Rise" by Public Image Limited. "Jolene" by Dolly Parton? Is it a great song? Yes. Is there anyone on planet earth who's unfamiliar with it? Probably not. Ditto for "Welcome to the Terrordome," by Public Enemy, "Livin' Thing," by ELO, and "I Chase the Devil," by Max Romeo and the Upsetters. In my opinion, a mix CD should either create a flow and an atmosphere that wouldn't exist without stringing a particular set of tracks together or it should introduce listeners to amazing but relatively unknown songs. If a mix does both of those things that's great, but this mix fails to do either.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic, not so laid back chill out album.......2006-05-29

Back to Mine - Liam Prodigy - is the latest in the collection of "Back to Mine" - whereby electronic artists pick their favourite songs for an "after hours chill out" compilation. Not surprisingly - Liam's mix is anything but "chill-out" - which is a good thing.

Crossing from the Prodigy's "Wake the F### Up" to QOTSA's "Feel Good Hit" to Public Enemy to... Dolly Parton is a wildly eclectic mix of music. Everything from early nineties techno/big-beat (Meat Beat Manifesto) to the latest in Hip Hop (the Neptunes produced N.O.R.E track "Nothing") to old reggae (see The Specials) to old school punk / Ska (The Jam) to ELO (a category of their own) - Liam Howlett's mix is always interesting and never boring (and not too quiet either).

For Prodigy fans - there are a few gems including Max Romeo's "Chase the Devil" which has the familiar catchcry of "Out of Space" and the audience warm-up track of "Wake the F### Up".

Well recommended.

2 out of 5 stars meh..........2006-02-23

A pretty standard collection of songs...my first "Back To Mine" and I didn't realize they weren't mixed. You can get all the songs on here elsewhere, and the "EXCLUSIVE!" Prodigy track is pretty middling. I like his flow track-to-track, but the selection is ho-hum. Highlights are QOTSA and Meat Beat Manifesto, that 'I Chase the Devil' track if you ever wanted to know where the "Out of Space" sample came from. Otherwise, don't bother! Rather expensive for a single disc of unmixed tracks you can find on iTunes or other P2P sites for signifacantly cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars Mmmm... a hot steaming cup of oi punk/reggae.......2005-12-12

The Ruts... Pretty much one of the best bands ever, and completely underrated. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the fusion of punk and reggae/dub. The song Jah War perfectly personifies the marvelous hybrid that is punky reggae music (even though the title confuses me). It is a shame that the Owen died before they could record again, but that doesn't stop you from getting the album they did with Mad Professor as the Ruts DC (even though you will have a hard time findin it at a decent price). But back to the review, this album is superb. Jah War is by far my favorite track (think Johnny Was by SLF or White Man (in Hammersmith Palais) by the Clash) and is also politcally charged. Other notably good tracks are Babylons Burning (obvious Clash influences) and SUS, both sharp critiques on British society. Just get this album now, whether you are a punk or a Rasta. I also suggest any album by the Clash, the Slits first album, Forces by the Terrorists, Rhythm Collisoin by the Ruts DC vs. Mad Professor, and Y by the Pop Group (strictly dub influences on this one).

5 out of 5 stars One of the premier punk albums, ever...PERIOD!.......2003-03-29

My brother came home in 1979 with the "Something that I said" single (1.99 at Records on Wheels in '79, eh) and I was hooked. There was only one thing to do. I bought this album when it first came out as an import in Canada (yes! on vinyl). To this day it still stands as one of the best punk albums for that music era. Favourite songs include Babylons Burning, SUS, Something That I Said (of course), It Was Cold, and Jah War. I was so impressed with this band that I tried to buy everything they put out, up until Malcolm's death and the introduction of Ruts D.C. No offence, fellas, but that band just didn't have the sound or quality of the original Ruts. If you are looking for original Punk Rock, then buy this album. It is one of the best records to come out of the late 70's/early 80's Punk Rock period.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Youth at their best.......2004-07-17

I love this album, but then: I was a Musical Youth fan since 1982's "Pass The Dutchie" and have remained a fan ever since. I doubt that you could call this 'The Best Of' Musical Youth, as they made some really good tracks that are only on their studio albums and singles (B-sides!), but this definitely IS the collection of all tracks that have been singles (A-sides). This one is practically the same as "Maximum Volune: The Best Of Musical Youth", except is has different liner notes and leaves out the unnecessary 1995 remix of "Dutchie". To conclude: this is a great item for everyone that loves "Pass The Dutchie" or anything else by MY and an addition to the collectors' collection, but wasn't necessary to be released since Universal releases "Maximum Volume" AND One Way released "Anthology".

One of the best compilation CD's out there. Great sample of the genre.

      1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2006-06-03

the fisrt disc is sissy sounding people singing. the only good song is by go betty go. and the other disc is stupid screamo and spazoid stuff. what a waste of money!! :(

      5 out of 5 stars Insanely Good.......2006-04-08

This 2 disc compilation of all aspects of alternative is a must-have for anyone that likes it. They managed not only to put ther best bands at the time (2004), on these discs, but they also scrounged up the very best songs. If there was one song that each of these bands would've played at the Grammys, (if the Grammys played alternative, which they don't) these would be it. Again it's all aspects of alternative. You have your general punk "Jersey", and then you have your emo "Lightweight Holiday" "Amber Pacific" and you also have your ska "Big D and the Kids Table" and you have your hardcore punk "From First to Last" and your 90's wave punk "The Casualties". If you love alternative theres nothing to not love about this. I bought this the first day it came to store and i still give it a good work-out in my cd player.

4 out of 5 stars You get to listen to a variety and learn what you do and dont like.......2005-11-27

Well first off when i bought this cd like over a year ago.. i was just a greenday and Blink-182 junkie. had been for like 3 years. Then i bought this cd hoping to find some new bands and slowly started getting into other Punk/Emo/Alternitive/Screamo bands..
      This cd introduced me to..
      *A New Found Glory*
      *Anti-Flag*
      *Atmosphere*
      *Bad Religion*
      *Chronic Future*
      *Coheed & Cambria*
      *Halifax*
      *Hazen Street*
      *Matchbook Romance*
      *Motion City Soundtrack*
      *MxPx*
      *Simple Plan*
Which in time introduced me to other bands and now music is my life and i have over 3,000 songs in little over a year so ya this cd hits home for me and i sugest it and its 2003 and 2005 counterpart.. well im sure all of them but those are the ones i have to anyone... also this review really bugged me...

********Um I liked this CD, but really I was expecting more. More Punk Rock, the magority of the 52 songs are hard rock. Like From Autoum to Ashes, they're like hard rock. The only real punk rock is the New Foud Glory, Coheed and Cambria, NOFX, Flogging Molly, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and some others. But most of its hard rock. If you classify some of the songs on the cd punk rock, you dont know punk rock you freakin poser. I bought the cd at Best Buy expecting it to be great, and for 5 dollars it seemed great. The punk rock thats on it is good, but some of the music just dosent cut it. Another thing I found lousy about this Cd is that they didnt have all the bands that where even at the Warped Tour, where was Senses Fail and Story of the Year and Hidden in Plain View?, are they not good enough. They should have gotten rid of all the crappy hard rock and put these great bands in their place. I gave the CD 3 stars, I am figuring that its a fair grade for a CD that isnt what it should be, but then is what it is and is good at it. I would recommend buying this CD, but if you truely are a punk rock fan dont expect the punk you deserve on the Warped Tour.*******

He has no idea what hes talking about...
      A) Autumn to ashes isnt hardcore its screamo so he doesnt know what hardcore or screamo is
B)Coheed, TBS, And THursday are emo not punk
C)He says he only likes punk but is wishing that senses fail, Hidden in plain view, and Story of the year was on there all emo just contridicded himself again.
SO in escence he is an idiot who knows nothing of punk...
      Thank you
      travis

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Masterpiece! .......2004-12-28

Ah, the youth of today. Or shall we say of the 80's when Musical Youth first hit the scene. Five Jamaican born lads fresh from Birmingham, England released what would be known as their biggest hit with 'Pass the Dutchie' in early 1982. Highly regarded as one hit wonders, this disc proves doubters wrong. Musical Youth were talented musicians who never fully got the credit and recognition they so rightly deserved. Part of that was due to their record company, poor management and well, youth. This disc contains such uptempo hits such as 'Pass the Dutchie', 'Youth of Today' and 'Heartbreaker'. Also included is a duet with Donna Summer and a remix to 'Pass the Dutchie'. This is a must have for die hard fans and reggae fans worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Still great music!.......2004-12-09

Yes, I'm still a fan of Musical Youth. People who own this album will agree that this music can only give you good times. It's cheerful and happy music by five boys who were very talented musicians. This album proves that their career was way too short. You will of course find the worldwide smash hit "Pass The Dutchie" on this cd, as well as a remix from 1994 that's completely overflowing. But you'll also find other great tracks like "The Youth Of Today", "16" and the duet with Donna Summer "Unconditional Love". If you like reggae and don't mind it a bit poppy, you'll definitely like this!
