The tango was born in the ghettos of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay, in the late 1880s. Mestizos, Indians, and Italian and German immigrants combined the Cuban habanera and the indigenous milonga song form with African Candomble drum beats and music from a German accordion called the bandoneon to create this dance rhythm. By the 1920s, the music was the toast of Paris and New York, and it has remained one of the most elegant and enduring art forms ever to come from the New World. This CD, arranged by the Uruguayan bandoneon master Raul Jaurena, features his work with a tango chamber group consisting of another bandoneonist, a pianist, bassist, two violinists, and vocalist Washington Galli. They perform the classic tango standards of the '30s and '40s by Carlos Gardel, Anibal Triolo, and Mariano Mores. With mournful and moving bandoneon strains counterpointed by florid piano music, the group recalls the brilliance of these old songs. Galli's manly tenor evokes pure romance on the sexy tracks "La Ultima Corda," "Whisky," and "Toda Mi Vida." The instrumental numbers, including the moving mid-tempo "Nostalgico" and the jazzy, impressionistic "Nocturna," showcase the musical and emotional range of the tango as well as the superior musicianship of Raul Jaurena and company. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Disappointment.

Thought this was soundtrack to movie "Tango Bar" by Marcos Zurinaga. It is not.

Noteworthy vocals but instrumentals leave something to be desired.. overall, not bad but there's a few other better buys

Raul Jaunera is a fabulous tango arranger. All arrangements here are very sophisticated. This CD should appeal to musicians as much as dancers.

Tango Bar provides me a sense of comfort and the style I like. I know many of the musicians from earlier recordings. Two of them, Uraguayan-born bandoneonist Raul Jaurena and bassist Pablo Aslan, are from the New York Tango Trio. Tito Castro is a bandoneonist who has played with some of the great tango musicians including Roberto Goyenche and Libertad Lamarque. The ensemble that produced this disk are internationally known musicians.

Caveat: this is not the music for the 1988 movie "Tango Bar," which starred Raúl Julia, Ruben Juarez, and Valeria Lynch. We don't want you to have the wrong expectations.

This is the kind of tango music that appeals to traditional Argentine tango dancers. It contains the traditional tangos of the 1930's and 1940's, music of Carlos Gardel, Mariano Mores, Julian Plaza, Alfredo Gobbi, Pedro Laurenz, Domingo Federico, Anibal Troilo, and Armando Pontier, to name a few. This is the tango of legend, of style and grace. It has a style and grace that is emotionally moving to the dancer. It is something meant to be shared. There is nothing that would appeal to "fantasy tango" dancers. Tango Bar is music with a style and grace that is particularly suited for "close embrace" salon tango dancing.

I have a particular fondness for Raul Jaurena's arrangements of Carlos Gardel's "Por una cabeza" and "Soledad." Although the original music was written long ago, there is a certain "freshness" to it that has appeal today. It brings out the best in this ensemble of internationally known musicians.

Tango Bar is a good representation of the classic 30's Tango Sound. You know, the kind you hear in James Bond movies when he is wooing the his female co-star. Overall, Tango Bar isn't a title for that will revolutionize music but it is nice if you and your significant other want a romantic evening at home.
