In recent years, Northside Records has carved a unique niche as the American home of some of Scandinavia's finest folk and folk-rock artists. This compilation gives you 20 tracks by 15 of the brightest Northern Lights, including the Gothic, almost grind core rock of Hedningarna, winners of a Swedish Grammy for previous efforts, virtuosic fiddling and world percussion from Väsen, culture-clashing Celtic music from Swåp, a British-Swedish quartet, mutant swamp funk from Hoven Droven and the strangely compelling music of Tapani Varis's jews harp. As might be expected from people who spend half the year in frozen darkness, some of the tracks have a deeply melancholy feel, but the playing is always energetic enough to cast off a few rays of sunshine. --j. poet

Great Transaction.......2007-06-27
Product arrived in time for a Swedish dinner that I was throwing. This was a wonderful addition to the event. Thank you!
Really tasty combo.......2007-02-13
Sometimes when musicians try to combine traditional and contemporary ideas, it does not appeal to me. But this one is a winner! I've been playing traditional Scandinavian folk music for 30+ years, and enjoy the addition of non-traditional sounds such as the African and electronic ones found on some of these cuts. This is really tasty music. Buy it.
Various artists and various quality.......2005-08-14
About half the music is really good and catching, but just as many of the melodies are boring or too similar to each other. The quality is very varied and while some of the music should rate as 5 stars, I choose 3 stars as an average for the whole cd.
This ain't ABBA..........2004-04-11
...and that's a relief. No, this is something better -- a truly unique compilation of equally unique artistes blending pre-Medieval tradition with post-modern flourishes.
I had heard of Garmarna and Hedningarna before buying this disc, but my knowledge of them was scant at best. As for the rest, I knew not a thing. But I took a chance and what a surprise. This disc touches on music that covers both ends of the spectrum: from quaint, straight ahead renditions from groups such as Chateau Neuf, Den Fule, and the instrumentally exciting Väsen, to the experimental stylings of fiddler Hege Rimestad, riff rockers Hoven Droven and the aforementioned Hedningarna.
The thing that will surprise most about this style of music is how immediate it all sounds, both foriegn and familiar at the same time. Hints of jazz and classical seem to pepper certain aspects of the arrangements of some, but the most obvious is the connection it bares to Irish folk music.
If you want a new musical experience and like what you've read here, I say take a chance on this and the other Nordic Roots compilations. From there, buy individual albums by the artists themselves, especially Hedningarna and Garmarna. (The Garmarna track here is not really representative of their newer material by the way, but still worth checking out!)
Unexpected and very cool!.......2003-05-25
"20 tracks, 78 minutes, Cheaper than Food!" proclaimed the sticker on this CD, peeking out at me from a store's disorganized rows of miscellaneous world music discs. `Cheaper than food?!' I thought, bewildered. `What sort of thing is that to say about a recording? If that's the best praise anyone can offer, it doesn't bode well for the quality of the content ...' But economy and curiosity won out and I bought it anyway. What a surprise--it was great! A caption from the back of the package sums up my reaction perfectly: "An ideal introduction to the vibrant traditional music scene developing across the Nordic lands: incredible playing, catchy tunes, brilliant arrangements and strange instruments playing pre-medieval as well as modern compositions. All this music at a very special price." Neo-traditional would probably be a better description of most of the selections, as they combine the quaintness of traditional tunes and folk instruments with elements of rock, technopop, jazz, world fusion music and new age. Swedish and Sami, Finnish and Norweigan, the groups featured on "Nordic Roots" display verve and virtousity, inviting the listener to delve deeper into this fascinating genre--obviously the reason for such an inexpensive sampler. Featured artists include Vasen, Hedningarna, Garmarna, Groupa, Hoven Droven and Wimme. Despite the fact that I actually have Scandinavian roots, I'd never had any exposure to the music of that region. So this album was well worth the price I originally paid--a totally new musical experience. Happily, NorthSide has continued this intriguing series, further introducing and promoting their artisits in "Nordic Roots 2" and "Nordic Roots 3", both of which are also "cheaper than food". Give one a try!

Beautiful!.......2003-03-16
When it comes to composing for and playing strings, I will go out on the limb and say that no group of musicians does it better than the Scandinavians. This cd caught my attention after hearing Johan Svendsen's "Icelandic Melodies". That alone I thought would be worth the discounted Naxos price. But after hearing the rest (especially Grieg's "Holberg Suite" and Dag Wiren's "Serenade for Strings"), I can't seem to get this out of my cd changer. It's always nice to find a cd where you get twice the pleasure for half the price!
Wonderful selection of works for strings..........2001-04-18
Grieg is unfortunately often credited with having composed only two masterpieces: his single piano concerto and the incidental music to Peer Gynt. I disagree and the work contained on this bargain Naxos release, his "Holdberg Suite", ranks up there with the Serenades of Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, and Suk as a masterpiece for string orchestra.
On this disc, rather than pair the work up with other compositions by Grieg, Naxos has provided us with some wonderful performances of less frequently heard works for similar forces by fellow Scandinvian composers.
The other major pieces here, if you can call them major, are Nielsen's "Little Suite in A Minor" and Wiren's "Serenade". Though composed by Nielsen when he was only 23 the Suite more than hints at the more mature Nielsen of the symphonies, especially in the finale. Wiren's work is much lighter and a delight from start to finish especially in the playful scherzo and the familiar fourth movement - the "marcia".
Johan Svendsen, a contemporary of Grieg, is represented by five shorter works, all based upon folk songs and all with a very melancholy feel to them.
The entire disc is beautifully performed by the the Bournemouth Sinfonietta under the direction of Richard Studt. Also the quality of the recording is up to Naxos' usual high standards providing excellent definition and clarity to the performances.

This diamond of a recording gives the listener a rare and intimate look at the genuine folk music of Scandinavia, away from the festivals, the hype, and the fusions. Here are the willow bark flutes, the pristine voices, and the fiddles (both hardingfele and standard) of Norway, usually in solo settings, or simple call and responses between an instrument and a voice. Central to the proceedings is singer Kirsten Bråten Berg, a singer of such pure tone and ethereal spaces that the ear swoons upon hearing it. Lesser-known but no less impressive is the voice of Pernille Anker. Hardingfele players Hallvard T. Bjørgum, Torliev Bolstad, and Gunnar Stubseid show the diverse capabilities of this drone fiddle. There are two pieces for transverse flute (one as a duo with a pipe organ that is quite unusual), one for solo dulcimer, and one for willow bark flute to round out the sounds of Norway. There are only two slightly larger ensemble pieces, one a trio for voice, saxophone, and hardingfele, another for voice, hardingfele, bouzouki (the illustrious Ale Möller), and recorder. All the tunes are original save for a beautiful solo fiddle piece by Hans Brimi. This is a worthy collection selected by the Norwegian Heilo label, and it offers a rare look inside the folk tradition. --Louis Gibson

beautiful!.......2007-06-11
Very nice, high quality music. We enjoy collecting music from around the world to both listen to at home and in the classroom. This is one of my favorites so far.
This cd stands apart.......2006-04-10
I wouldn't describe myself as a music critic, but I do get restless and like novelty, and world music gives me range to do that. That said, a friend gave me Nordisk Sang more than 10 years ago, and it grew on me over time and is probably my most played cd. The vocals are hauntingly beautiful in a way unpolluted by self-consciousness, and the harmonies are complex and unfamiliar enough even after scores of listenings that I can't shake the feeling of "otherliness" I get listening to it.
In the last couple of years I've explored more Nordic roots music and although I've found some good albums like Garbarek and Bukkene Bruse, nothing's quite equalled Nordisk Sang. Something magic there.
paddywhack.......2006-03-22
An excellent albumt hat captures the best of Nordic folk. Roots music often reveals the places it has come from and this collection does exactly that. All the songs have the feeling of bleak snowscapes, cold winters, and long dark nights with the singers circled around a fire, protected from the elements outside. There is a definite flavour of the viking here with haunting vocals on many of the tracks. It is hard to pick out a single outstanding track as unusually for compilations like this, the whole package runs seamlessly together. Having visited Norway on several occasions and seen the bleak landscapes, this album brings those memories back to vivid life. Definitely one for the winter witha hot rumor whatever toaccompany it! Buy this, you wont go wrong if you have eclectic tastes.
Haunting rainy day music.......2004-12-11
I received this CD as a present from a friend who evidently knows me quite well. I love every track, and though it has beeen over two years since I received it, I still play it quite regularly. It is the kind of music you need to read Beowulf to, next to a fire, on a rainy day.
The only disc that features the incomparable Pernille Anker.......2004-01-03
The prior reviews more than adequately describe the mystery and haunting beauty of this disc. I have a lot of nordic discs and this one can't be beat. What makes it special is the variety of presentations (vocal and various instruments), the consistent quality of the song selection, the loving and deeply evocative arrangements that showcase the sheer beauty of the music. And then there are those voices! What incredible ones! Braten-Berg is well entitled to her due. But Pernille Anker is equally a treasure, and we lost her way too early. As far as I can determine, this is the ONLY disc readily available in the U.S. that showcases her amazing talent. She does have one incredible cut on Wizard Women of the North.

The album starts with a low growl, building into the menace that becomes "Tass'on Nainen," and you're into the world of Hedningarna, where traditional Swedish instrumentation (and the vocals of Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto) meet studio electronics. As dark as anything produced by a goth band, it's a startling record that's pushed the Nordic sound to world music's cutting edge. The fiddles distort evilly; programmed beats blend with a frame drum. While Hedningarna mine territory that other Swedish bands such as Garmarna do, the sound on this record is their own, full and wild and a studio creation that never sounds overproduced. When the guitar cuts loose at the end of "SaglaTen," it becomes obvious that this is really the new and glorious sound of folk-rock, '90s style. The guest joiking by Wimme on "Tuuli" only serves to make the album even more otherworldly, but a passport isn't required. --Chris Nickson

Better than I expected.......2006-12-28
I bought this because I've heard the song Raven before, but the whole CD is just amazing. In fact, Raven is now one of my least liked songs on the CD, originally being on of my favorite songs ever. This music is definitely original. It reminds me of Celtic music bagpipes and such.
Raw, Animalistic, and Addictive.......2006-03-06
I used to hate this type of music. Having been "brought up" by classical music, rock, and comtemporary film scores-I didn't consider these droning chants to be music at all-since I am more used to more melodious and polyphonic musical forms. My interest in folk started with Irish music, from which a love of drums and mouth music was born. While Irish music is powerful, for the most part it is very fair, calming and at times exuberant. The music of Scandinavia is pure power, raw, animalistic, and illicts the part that is most primal in all of us. It isn't exactly what you'd call a "pleasant listen." This is not for everyone and I usually don't listen to it around family for fear of getting kicked out of the house :) but it is very rousing and the beat and rhythm...like certain African or Native American soundscapes...gives you an interesting drive...like you could conquer all...not a safe thing to listen to if you hate someone...haha...I say this because certain tracks really resonates with emotions that associate with anger...but in a way, it helps you to let it out...
Trä -- Quirky, Wild, and Addictive.......2005-05-22
The 3rd album by Hedningarna, Trä, became their most celebrated and most popular. It features an all out vocal assault from not only the two Finnish singers (Sanna and Tellu) but also by the men as well on Min Skog, Räven, and VargTimmen. Instrumentally, the band combines their unique Scandinavian folk sound with modern rock production and instrumentation.
While the album does contain some of the band's strongest (and most lovingly bizarre) material -- Tuuli, Räven, Täss'on Nainen, and Tina Vieri to name a few -- some of the tunes don't really quite catch fire. It was certainly a groundbreaking album but I don't believe it is their best; Karelia Visa accomplishes that in a more sublime, mature way.
But this album still delivers the heathen roots/rock that makes this group so wonderful -- its a quirky, wild and addictive ride. Certainly worth owning.
Dark, deep, yet manages to be uplifting.......2004-03-28
Like the English folk singers of the 1970s, Scandanavia's Hedningarna managed during the 1990s to combine a truly modern aesthetic with the most traditional values evident in their own folk tradition.
Because the folk traditions of Scandanavia are based on the use of wind instruments rather than stringed ones, the sound here is quite different from Fairport Convention or Anne Briggs' a capella folk. Hedningarna managed through their application of modern techniques to the most tradional of Scandanavian folk instruments to produce something that sounded and sounds quite otherworldly. The pipes on the opener "Tässi On Nainen" are so dark and droning that the haunting, serious vocal melody becomes uplifting, whlst the dense rhythms of the following "Min Skog" thrust themselves so far upfront that it sounds like it's played in two eras at once - literally. The angry male vocals sound quite like an aggressive preacher: the effect is so emotional as to be memorable even when a listener cannot understand what is being said.
"Pornopolka" featured the strange yet amazingly heartfelt and rapid-fire rhythms typical of the Finnish language - resulting from its characteristic vowel harmony, and also characteristic of Värttinä's "Katariina" - together with an incredibly strange fiddle melody. The amazing melody of the language allows them to achieve a volume unimaginable in most of the world's languages. "Såglåten", on the other hand, featured a melodic yet fitting guitar break that added to the fire of the melodies, whilst "Räven" was so eerie, intimate and unrestrained that it would touch any listener unconsciously.
The last three tracks were even more eccentric. The soft "Tuuli" featured the hypnotic vocals of Wimme Saari over a groove so hypnotic it was danceable; "Täppmarschen", despite the emphasis on the pipes, sounds more like what we would call "folk" than anything, yet winds by its astonishing intimacy even to someone unfamiliar with the language. And "Tina Vieri" sounded almost accessible in its verses yet the melody of the language makes it so surprising that Sanna Kuori-Suoni and Taulu Paulasto can put off such a dark and beautiful piece: the stringed lutes sound like a piano.
In their amazing manipulation of traditional sounds to produce something new, Hedningarna were quite unlike anything most of you would have heard. Hard to understand, but few record will get under one's skin so quickly.
This glows of Nordic darkness........2003-10-07
Wolves, foxes and hill-dwelling humans are regulars in Scandinavian story-telling, along with the dark woods in which they inhabit. And this, as with much Nordic mythology and literature, is not a distant reflective experience.Rather, the pretty wilderness is coloured with close-ups of violence- the wolf's teeth, the torn flesh, the vengeful humanity.
The women sing witchily, but in tune, except for some deliberate moments of vocal gymnastics. For example, you'll catch them panting like tiring animals. And despite their singing being in Finnish tongue, the music's overall feel is more notably Swedish. And though the Swedish men sing on a couple of tracks (and howl like wolves, successfully enough), their expertise lay in the pin-point accuracy of their instrumental pursuits. They innovatively pulse electricity into their traditional instruments.Bagpipes, hurdygurdies, zithers and primitive drums are already quite course even without such treatment. The modern drums on the album are used tactfully, as are most studio embelishements.Though, I think their electric guitar usage was better left absent. The skin of this music is modern, but the skeleton is ancient.Upbeat and downbeat tunes share the load. This art is quite aggressive, but always poetic and tuneful. The female singers bring in such sensitivity, considering the lyrical content. The themes are set in nature, with assorted creatures.Humans are often involved thru their spells and evils.'Lust' is a recurrent sin here. But Hedningarna address such things with respect and good judgement.Only rarely is there a semblance of gratuity.
Warning to teddy bears! If you're going out in the woods today to have your picnic ...don't choose these woods!

Gjallarhorn's debut made them plenty of friends with its unusual mix of Nordic folk and didgeridoo. The three years since their last disc have given them time to develop their unique sound and return with a highly satisfying album. Singer Jenny Wilhelms has learned to use her voice to its fullest, and her fiddle playing, along with that of Christopher Ohman, provides the melodic base of the band, while the didgeridoo offers an underlying drone, a technique shared by other Nordic bands such as Garmarna. Beautifully arranged, the opener "Suvetar" makes for a seductive entry into an album that constantly amazes with its depth. Like Wimme, the Finnish-based Gjallarhorn are pushing at the bounds of Scandinavian music, even including samples of dolphin sounds on the closing "Sinivatsa." There's little doubt they've evaded the traditional sophomore jinx. --Chris Nickson

Scandinavian folk-rock at it best.......2007-05-12
Haunting lyric driven by an almost Medieval beat that brakes into something more modern. It is a good balance, and comparison to world music from North Africa, Tuareg rock specifically.
Sjofn is the best of old and new northen music.......2006-03-20
This is a wonderful compilation of Gjallarhorn's sound. From traditional Norwiegian melodies to a Moari/Norse sound. If your looking for something new with familiarity this is a good choice
The single best ethno/folk album I've yet to hear.......2005-09-15
The title sums it all up, really.
I first saw Gjallarhorn live back in 1998, and was immediately completely zonked by the sound.
Jenny's voice is amazing, the songs are hauntingly beautiful and Martin's production is razor sharp while still sounding raw.
Above all, this album has that natural barefoot "toes in the soil"-feel that almost every ethno-fusio band misses. This is just so immediate and honest... There is zero pretention but maximun magic present on this album!
The first album is also great (I hear there is a remastered version available now since the band wasn't happy with the first version they had to make in a hurry), too bad that the third (Grimborg) moved to a maybe more artistically diverse direction, losing a lot of the natural charm and feel of serendipity at the same time...
concurring with everyone else's praise.......2004-04-01
I just want to put in another 5 star review. I am another who can truly feel the power of the Goddess in this recording. I have also seen Gjallarhorn and they are every bit as amazing in person, so I surely don't think this CD is overproduced-ths songs sound substantially the same live. This is also a good CD for testing new stereo systems because of its dynamic range.
"arise to see the seeds".......2004-01-10
This CD makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. "Suvetar," the album opener, is a 3000-year-old fertility goddess chant-song and gives off magick energy like sparks from a bonfire. From there the CD varies in intensity but never in quality. Jenny Wilhelm's voice is a treasure. It reminds me of Sandy Denny and Maddy Prior simultaneously, and she flies above the band with effortless grace while they pull and roil and flare beneath. The songs are about love in its many forms, and on the liner notes it is claimed that the goddess Sjofn (a love goddess from the Norse tradition) is the "guardian" of this recording.
Maybe that's why this music sounds so untamed and transcendent. It sounds truly pagan, not in a tacky "let's-pretend-like" sense (like so much deliberately "pagan" music) but in a fiery, direct way, tribal and present, vivid and hallucinatory at the same time.
In short "Sjofn" is one of the best "folk" recordings I have ever heard. You can spend a lot of time with this recording and still not discover every nuance. That is true of all the Gjallarhorn I have heard so far, but never more so than with this CD. Beautiful, primitive and fey, "Sjofn" is not to be missed.

OK, this one's fantastic, too.......2007-02-13
Nordic Roots, Vol. 2 is a bit further out than the first volume, but definitely to my liking. My guess is that the selections, even when rocky, are performed with enough folk idiom to be enjoyable to me. The final cuts, "Lavalek" and "Brekken" are rockiest, but even those felt OK. (I am not a lover of hard rock.) My favorite is "Polonaise from Sexdraga" which reminds me strongly of a nyckelharpa tune I've always loved to play on flute. Nice selection. Nice price. (original review 2/13/07)
3/16/07: Did I say I liked this CD? Well, I LOVE it! Over a few weeks of listening to it from time to time, this music has really grown on me. Good work, folks!
Only thing missing!.......2006-11-16
The album is awesome!! Only thing missing would be a Sugarcubes/Bjork song. "Regina" would be a great song for this album to represent Iceland.
The Best Of the NorthSide Samplers.......2004-04-11
Again, NorthSide brings us some wonderful samples from the fertile Scandinavian folk scene on this Nordic Roots 2 CD. After taking a chance on the first one (after all, it was so cheap!) and being wowed, I had to get this one. Many of the same artistes from the previous collection can be found here, along with other interesting groups. From the infectious openers Vildhonung (Wild Honey) from Boot and Mettsän Tytto (Forest Maiden) from Hedningarna, through ultra modern twists from Garmarna (Vedergällningen, or Vengeance), Sorten Muld (2 Søstre, or 2 Sisters), to the jazz stylings of Lavalek by Groupa and the driving hard rock of Brekken by Hoven Droven, one would have to be dead not to find something to like here. Just one warning: this stuff is addictive.
Full of fun and energy!.......2003-05-25
Ranging in mood from joyful and jaunty to dark and driving, this is my favorite of the three "Nordic Roots" samplers that the NorthSide label has released to date. Intense stuff is to be found here; there is nothing half-way about this music! To those not familiar with the genre, I'm not sure how to describe it. There are elements similar to Celtic and folk, as well as liberal doses of rock and techno influence. But what shines through most noticeably are the traditional Scandinavian roots of the selections - strident and visceral, perhaps reflecting the harshness of the climate, the Nordic peoples' fierce pride in their native cultures, and the darkness of their mythology. At first listen, the music might seem eclectic to a neophyte, abundant with the sounds of hardanger fiddle, nyckelharpa and unfamiliar languages, but it all becomes quite addictive. In addition to many of the same artists featured on the previous "Nordic Roots" release, new groups include Annbjorg Lien, Sorten Muld, Varttina, Bask, Boot, and Bukkene Bruse. I find this particular CD to contain great motivational music to work by, especially in the first half. Give it a listen and see for yourself--after all, at its price, it's "still cheaper than food", as the sticker on the casing brags! (Well, some foods, anyway.)
Intriguing and Beguiling Music.......2002-12-27
Music from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland has magical qualities that are beyond word descriptions, as beautiful as the fjords and the night-time clear skies with falling stars, an Impressionistic painting as hard to describe as the Northern Lights. The female vocalists are enchanting like the Celts and Hungarians (& just as hard to describe, ancient languages with equally mysterious origins). There is violin music played on the hardanger fiddle which has sympathetic vibrating strings, that provide a drone, amazingly hypnotic and trance-like. The music is slightly familiar if you are acquainted with Appalachian fiddle music or bluegrass, add to it some Austrian waltzes, and an occasional Polish mazurka: then once-in-awhile give it a soft velvet feeling. The fact that much of it is over 100 years old, makes it true roots music, occasionally it is up-dated with an electrified sound amplifying the intensity and magical qualities ... sometimes flutes, other times a viola, the nyckelharpa, and other ancient Scandinavian instruments provide the intrigue and enchantment. Having heard "Nordic Roots" Volume 1 (& bought it), I looked forward to Volume 2. The best and most talented musical artists provide extraordinairy examples of this genre for an unbelievable price. Undoubtedly, the captivating musical sounds by these artists will hypnotize you into wanting a full CD by one or more of these musicians. Northside is truly providing us "food for the soul" and with gratitude! Erika Borsos (erikab93).

This is the third album in NorthSide's compilation series that's perennially billed as "cheaper than food." At three dollars, it's hard to argue. This Minneapolis-based label is known for its eclectic mixture of Nordic roots music, with artists espousing both conventional and modern interpretations of their homeland sounds, be they from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Samiland. Fiddles, acoustic guitars, accordion, and percussion abound here, but unorthodox instruments such as synthesizers, electric guitar, and didjeridoo occasionally surface. From the shamanistic techno stylings of Wimme to the entrancing, poppy vocal harmonies of Värttinä to the lively strings of the Nyckelharpa Orchestra to the electronica-meets-early-music vibe of Garmarna's latest, it is hard to deny the passion and artistry of these groups. Some tracks are more outstanding than others, and the appreciation of each lies purely with an individual listener's taste. Some of the artists represented herein are far more diverse than their singular entries would suggest, but this disc offers a good starting point for new listeners. There album also includes four exclusive live tracks as a bonus. Hey, for three dollars, are you really gonna complain? --Bryan Reesman
Customer Reviews:
Scandinavian "old time" music, brought into the 21st century........2005-12-15
This is excellent music from a surprising direction: Scandinavia. Who would have thought that Scandinavians, those cool, collected, post-modern Northerners, would produce such vibrant and exciting sounds? Fans of "the Blues", Bluegrass, and Celtic music will enjoy this Nordic "root" music, which comes from the same cultural impetus, the desire to connect with a simpler and more satisfying past. This nostalgic search is of course impossible of success - "you can't step into the same river twice", as Hericleitus says - but it produces great music.
The mix of the traditional with the modern varies from group to group, but all are very talented musicians, all are worth listening to. My favorites are Vartinna, Gjallerhorn, Vasen, Ranarim, Hoven Droven, Hedningarna, and Sorten Muld (sorry, no diacritical marks available on this processor).
The sound engineering is superb, as would be expected from Scandinavian sound engineers.
The price is the frosting on the cake. They are practically giving these away, with the expectation that once you have sampled this genre you will be hooked and buy more. They're right.
Explore the Exotic intoxicating vibrant diverse sounds!.......2004-03-30
I have all three of the Nordic Roots, so far, this is by far the best one. The music is enticing and exciting, with various rythms and mixes of music that comes out smoothly and very interestingly. There is a jazz feel in some songs, a native sound that resonates of old Viking roots, and the combination is refreshing. It's great when the albums keep getting better as this series of Roots has! It has been a great exploration of my own nordic roots, talent, originality, ingenuity all describe this one! Thanks to the talented artists!
A scrumptuous smorgasbord.......2003-08-09
I wasn't too sure what to expect when I bought this CD, but I figured that at this price, what the heck. Now I'm hooked. This is one of the only music samplers I've ever bought where there's not a single song on the disc I don't like. Some of them are a little stranger than others (Wimme's "Bamboo Honey" comes to mind -- Wimme's a Sami musician), but none of them are forbiddingly weird. I particularly enjoyed the beautiful ballad "High Mountains, Low Valleys" performed by Ranarim, a Swedish group well-known for its settings of old Swedish folk poetry. Gjallarhorn's "Suvetar, Goddess of Spring" is also spectacular and enticingly different, as well as the vocal music of the Finnish group Värttinä and just plain fun pieces for nyckelharpa or fiddle like "The Full Rigged Ship" and "The New Rigged Ship."
None of the performers here are strictly traditional. Instead, all of them blend elements of the old with the new, producing what one critic has called a "melding of the transcendent with the subterranean."
This is a great introduction to a neglected area of world folk music. And hey, at this price, you can't go wrong. 5 stars.
More intriguing Scandinavian music from NorthSide.......2003-05-25
Combining traditional tunes and instruments from Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Sami people with modern electronics and sensibilities, this is Nordic neo-folk music promoted with grace, zeal and consummate professionalism. Overall, "Nordic Roots 3" is the mellowest of the three "Nordic Roots" samplers, with more gentle, reflective numbers than the others releases, but still a few lively ones as well. Many of the artists featured on "Nordic Roots" 1 and 2 return, as well as some new faces, such as Gjallarhorn, Maria Kalaniemi and Aldargaz, Harv, Ranarim and the Nyckelharpa Orchestra. If you like the "Nordic Roots" series, check out the many releases of NorthSide's individual artists, as well as World Music Network's survey album, "Rough Guide to the Music of Scandinavia".
Shimmering, Sparkling, Glittering Music.......2002-12-27
Nordic Roots 3: another wish come true! The rainbow colors on the cover, a setting sun reflected in a stream is an apt representation of the mysterious and intriguing music within! Sparkling streams, lush, verdant landscapes viewed from a mountain top, and fields of wildflowers are as hypnotic and magnitizing as Nordic music itself!! Headliner musical artists: Hedningarna, Swap, Gamarana, Vasen, Varttina, Ranarim, Wimme, and Maria Kalaniemi, just to name a few, play their best and most shining examples of Nordic style music. The nyckelharpa, keyed violin, hardanger fiddle, violas, percussion, flutes, guitar, and even a didgeridoo add more mysterious sounds to the already haunting oom-laut accented Swedish and Norwegian female vocalists. Accordion music never sounded so magical and sweet as when played by Maria Kalaniemi. "The Greenist Branch" sung in Latin and accompanied by Swedish instruments played by Gamarna adds a whole new dimension to the meditative Latin words of one of the most famous German female mystics. Ranarim, one of my favorites, provides an extraordinairy rendition of "High Mountains, Low Valleys", which was recorded live. The music on the whole CD, has a Celtic lilt, with some Eastern European mystery, along with the American Appalachian fiddle sound, a cross-over mixture that is indeed indescribable but every bit as
powerful and captivating! The "joik" chanting by Wimme (Finland) has a Native American sound and feel, which is tremendously moving combined with the modern techno sounds. It actually has some Buddhist-like meditative undertones that are intriguing beyond description. Nordic Music is indeed a natural wonder and is worth exploring by anyone who loves traditional and roots music. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

It begins with an eerie backwards fiddle, then the beats kick in, banging for dear life, and the cool, authoritative voice of Emma Härdelin floats over the top. It's the third Garmarna album, fulfilling every promise they'd made on their first two records. The ancient and modern achieve an almost perfect balance here, the original material sounding as if it should be centuries old. Blood, guts, violence, love, they're all here, every aspect of the human condition. While the band conjures up musical magic, it's Härdelin who emerges as the sorceress, the true star, with a voice that just seems to bewitch. Put it all together, and you have something that's more than the sum of its impressive parts. This is the record you always knew Garmarna could make. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
This is one album you have to own!.......2006-01-16
This was my very first Garmarna CD. I bought this album by blind dumb luck, having never even heard of Garmarna, and I was completely enthralled by it. After close to 5 years it is still my favorite album. Emma Härdelin has gorgeous stirring vocals, and the beats will move you whether you understand the language or not. Their music is both traditional and contemporary with a little tribal edge mixed in. You will want to play Vengeance over and over. After hearing the unique music of Garmarna you will feel compelled to beg and plead for them to tour near you, or at least I did.
This is why I explore world music.......2006-01-10
Who cares if you can't speak Swedish? You'll have no trouble feeling the ancient stories and deep emotional resonance of this exceptional, splendid, wonderful CD. I'm an unabashed fan.
From the heart-pounding opening track to the off-kilter rhythms of "Stomped Bread" to the lushly evocative tone of "Herr Holkin", "Vengeance" presents a beautifully rounded portrait by musicians who successfully bridge some of the oldest poetry around (including a stop in the 11th century to scoop up Hildegard von Bingen's spare verse) with modern instrumentation. This is not easy listening music, by any means. The drums are tribal, the rhythms industrial, and the direct, clear voice of Emma Hardelin drives all of it with a beauty that is fierce, but never harsh. Please make room in your collection for this CD!
Vengeance Comes Dark and Bloody from Garmarna.......2005-03-11
Garmarna's growth over the course of three albums, from 1994's Vittrad to this disc, released in 1999, is amazing. Starting off as a simple folk/rock outfit, Garmarna has, to paraphrase the words of one band member, evolved from a folk band into something else. That something else includes rollicking electronic grooves and an aural soundscape that was only hinted at on previous efforts by this Swedish outfit.
The album gets off to a heavy start with Gamen. It then crashes to a halt into the Pre-Medieval Industrial groove of Euchari, originally a hymn penned by abbess Hildergard von Bingen in the middle ages.
Another track of note includes the dark bloody title track, both eerie and unnerving at the same time, with lyrics (though sung in Swedish, the English lyrics are included) about murder, drinking blood and wild beasts. Of course, this is typical of Garmarna's lyrical fare. Only here the music really provides the appropriate backdrop to the disturbing traditional tunes.
As a whole, the album loses its intensity as the disc wears on, but don't let this keep you from getting into other wonderful tracks such as Herr Holkin, Polska (the one tune closest to their previous work) or Sorgsen Ton.
I would like to hear more rootsy stuff but this is a great disc nonetheless. It would be nice to hear an album that combined the best of their early folk work with the electronica of this album. One can only hope. In the meantime, immerse yourself in the world of Garmarna -- you won't regret it.
driving.......2003-04-05
dark music you can dance to with beautiful vocals
there is a little of the traditional in this, but only very little. for the most part it is new electronic music
one of Northside's most progressive bands, if you ask me
also very unique music
Music to raise the dead with!.......2002-10-27
From the first kick-off of astounding techno merged with ancient Scandinavian to the last, soaring note, Garmarna manages to make an album which brings Swedish legends to life. My favorites on the CD have to be the opening hair-raiser, "Gamen," the CD's title track with its unforgettable opening sound of a heart beating, "Vedergallningen," and the melodic "Euchari." And it is obvious from a glance at the CD's lyrics (sadly only printed in English) that Garmarna wastes no time on toning down the blood, violence, and magic of its selected folk tales. Another plus is Emma's beautiful, soaring voice, but even when it's absent the instrumentalists do a wonderful job, as evidenced by the song's only non-vocal track, "Polska."
The CD's only drawback, I believe, is the lack of explosive emotion and sound immediately following the opening track. The ending track has actually put me to sleep a few times, disappointingly, and the rest of the CD seems unable to match the frenzied pace set by "Gamen." Still, this album is definitely worth your money, whatever the drawback.

Customer Reviews:
A Great CD!!! Fun music........2004-03-14
If you are tired of hearing the same "stuff" on the radio and television day in and day out, then I highly recommend this CD. It is fun music that is easy to listen to, and at the same time it will challenge you as a listener. I purchased this CD after hearing one track from it on MSN's "world essentials" web radio site, and it instantly became one of my favorites. Even though I rarely buy CDs, and want to buy others in different musical genres besides Nordic or whatever you want to label Vasen, I often find myself viewing their other releases and wondering if they are as good as "Whirled" is. How can I describe their music? Strings, percussion, rhythm, and power that will grip you.
Strikingly unique!.......2003-12-31
This joyous celebration of ancient and modern takes the listener on a journey through another world. Andre Ferrari's varied and inventive percussion is a nice complement to nyckelharpist Olov Johansson, fiddler Mikael Marin and guitarist Roger Tallroth, and distinguishes Vasen from many of the other neo-traditional Nordic groups. Another feature that sets this band apart is their freewheeling approach to meter and melody, disregarding the conventions of both to create music with an unexpected freshness and fascinating wildness. The tone of the selections on this album alternates between lively and progressive to laid-back and quaint, but an overriding sense of folksy cheerfulness pervades them all. Track 4, "Shapons Vindaloo", has a Middle Eastern feel to it and resembles the work of violinist Claude Shalhoub on his self-titled album. If you like "Whirled", check out also Vasen's subsequent release, "Gront", which is somewhat darker but just as interesting.
Swedish music in a new package.......2003-11-05
Being Swedish and having listened to traditional Swedish music growing up - this is nothing like it - they took traditional music to a totally new level! If you think traditional Swedish music is all about fiddles played by "dalmasar" on a summer meadow - you are wrong! Väsen captures the inner "väsen" of Sweden!
Are you experienced?.......2001-06-20
Stunningly beautiful melodies with quirky rhythyms played by the masters of the style. When I 1st heard this on the radio I thought maybe it was Breton or Celtic. I soon explored more Scandinavian music and it was everything I could hope for in a traditional music. The use of viola, middle eastern drumming and bouzouki backing up the native keyed fiddle or "nyckleharpa" is a superb blend that never seems old. The compositional talents of Roger Talroth, Mikel Marin and Olov Johannson combined is an unparalled marvel. I own almost every disc on this label, now. The sense of living with magic and unseen forces pervades this music and is part of the living culture that is Scandanavia.
This music makes my hair stand on end and my body shiver........2000-10-26
Complex harmonies, intertwined and subtly evolving melodies, incredible rhythm and absolutely huge energy make this CD the most riveting I have heard in years.
No kidding, when I first heard the track "Whirled" on my local public radio station, I cranked the volume up until I might as well have been at a live concert. I had shivers running up and down my body and I wanted to do nothing so much as dance! This CD TOTALLY ROCKS!
What I find most stunning about this band's music is that they take the instruments most often heard producing Celtic music and use them to make the most fabulously complex, rich, energetic and mesmerizing music I've ever heard.
