Congolese rumba is an electrifying style that has produced some master musicians like Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau. But just as worthy of the accolades is guitarist Papa Noel. This disc, compiled from releases in 1984 and 1994, isn't so much a best of but proof that his music is a magical part of the continuum of rumba. While the singing, especially that of Carlito Lassa, is glorious, it's when Noel lets his fingers fly across the fretboard that the real magic happens. The fills, rhythm work, and solos on the sebene are all his work and dazzling in their fluidity and melodic invention. Always tasteful and succinct--though a listener might wish for more of him--he's a true genius of the instrument, swooping and gliding while the band holds a supple groove in the background. If you still think Clapton is God, this disc might give you pause for reconsideration. --Chris Nickson

I feel like recommending this compilation to neophites wanting to listen to some old arias to learn if they like this genre and to singing students:
Ms Bartoli's voice is not beautiful, nor perfect when heard live, but her technique sounds perfectly good on record. Here and there her voice gets harsh, flat, losing brilliance and warmth, but most of the time one can concentrate on the accurate rendering of these old and beautiful arias.

She wisely decided to follow the letter of Parisotti's score, therefore meeting the need of all singing students of having a reference for their study. The agility is outstanding but pronunciation and expression, as well as the perfect gusto in presenting the phrases, are what make this compilation worthwhile. Not a word goes wasted or neglected but her being Italian and her sensitivity manage to avoid overkill.

One could wish she would publish compilations of single authors of the xvi and xvii centuries, edited according to philological criteria or else other compilations of the dated but still useful Parisotti edition.

Cecilia Bartoli at her best........2007-03-06

A great singer is one who dedicates singing to the text itself instead to himself/herself.
This is achieved 100% by Ms. Bartoli in this earlier album of hers. The recordings here cannot be termed otherwise than 'immaculate'. The very opening song 'Gia sole dal gange' is a display of Bartoli's unique timbre in its full beauty - glorious, rich and full. Many singers could tackle the range of this song, mezzos or sopranos, but who could pull it off in the manner as Ms. Bartoli? Credit to the one who picked this as the opening song of this fantastic album.
The songs following come in different styles and moods, all given full authentic interpretations by the singer. Compare the 'Vittoria, vittoria mio core' to 'Intorno al'idol mio' or 'Amarilli, mio bella' the vast contrast of mood, brought out equally well. The songs' requirement of versatility of interpretation is fully catered for.
I hate it when people say that this is a learners' album accompanying the 24 Italian Songs edited by one publisher. Such remarks could barely do justice to Ms. Bartoli's superb artistry, though admittedly, this CD would be an invaluable one for THAT purpose. What about the songs NOT included in the 24 Italian songs?

Great companion to Schirmer's 24 Italian Arias book.......2007-02-21

Cecilia Bartoli beautifully demonstrates many of the songs in Schirmer's 24 Italian Songs & Arias Of The 17th & 18th Centuries, which is widely recognized as an intermediate collection of Italian repitoire.

Great Bartoli, but not her best Italian songs.......2006-06-15

'The Impatient Lover' sung by Cecilia Bartoli is a collection of 18th and 19th century songs in Italian which were written by the predominantly German composers, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Hayden. Oddly, this is very seriously a better, or at least a more enjoyable collection, to my ear, than the 'If you Love Me' collection of Italian songs written by Italians, including Scarlatti, Caldera, and Vivaldi. And, neither collection of Italian songs is as interesting as Mme. Bartoli's collection of French love songs, 'Chant D'Amore'. All are done on London, but with three different accompaniests. I think the French material is just better than the Italian.

Beautiful and useful CD.......2006-03-22

I used this CD as accompaniment and inspiration for a voice class. It's very useful and Cecilia Bartoli sounds amazing.

Cecilia Bartoli is nearly unparalleled in her talent. The great mezzo-soprano is widely and rightly regarded as the great operatic voice of this generation, and this record will do nothing to change that opinion.

We hear Mozart, Schubert, Rossini, and more, sung with the voice of a angel on one hand, and with power and majesty on the other. She interprets with skill and finesse, and her knowledge of the music helps to inform her performances.

For anyone who's been wanting an introduction to opera, or to Cecilia Bartoli, buying this CD is a great way to start.

Very good singing!.......2007-03-21

Cecilia Bartoli has a wonderfully rich, textured mezzo voice. This CD shows her skills to good effect. Some illustrative cuts. . . .

"Voi che sapete" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" is richly sung. She displays a lush mezzo voice. This aria is smoothly sung; a very nice version. Her sumptuous voice interprets this piece nicely. A very satisfying version.

From "Don Giovanni," we have "Batti batti, o bel Masetto." Her rich voice does justice to this piece. There is also a nice characterization in play. Poignantly sung.

Rossini's "Belta Crudele" is smoothly sung; her rich voice does well by this piece. An effecting version. She notes of Rossini that he is "a composer to whom I feel particularly close, and in whose coloratura writing I have found a new and different expressive mode."

She takes a crack at Rossini's "Bel raggio lusinghier," normally sung by sopranos. And this does not disappoint. This work, sung by a mezzo, provides an interesting interpretation. She demonstrates agility in her technique; she shows good ornamentation. There is even a decent trill in this work, something that some current coloratura sopranos would long to equal, from my listening.

The final cut on the CD is from Rossini's "La Cenerentola," "Nacqui all'affano. . .Non piu mesta." Very well done. Her coloratura technique is rock solid. A trill during this cut would fill many sopranos with envy. She clearly shows a good coloratura sensibility. This is great stuff!

This is a good introduction to the range of skills possessed by Bartoli. A nice CD indeed.

Worthy Introduction to Mme. Bartoli.......2006-06-18

'Cecilia Bartoli, A Portrait' featuring the very same mezzo-soprano, Cecilia Bartoli is, after reviewing about a half dozen of her other albums, the best introduction to her art. It is not my favorite. Oddly enough, this is her album of French songs, which I prefer to her many collections of Italian pieces. But, this collection, at a very nice 76 minutes and change does a very good job of selecting operatic pieces with good choral and orchesteral backings.

I am not an experienced music or voice critic, but to my ear, compared to the likes of Anne Sophie Von Otter and Renee Fleming, Mme. Bartoli is a pleasantly different take on the operatic genre. She is not quite as powerful as Maria Callas, but then, who is?

I'm not a fan of cecilia bartoli, however I find this
compilation enjoyable.
I love bartoli's rendition of sussana's "deh vieni non tardar" which is normally sung by sopranos.
the other mozart arias, the rossini arias and the songs
for voice and piano are also very good.
I can't stand bartoli's rendition of "naqui allaffanno...non piu mesta". she sings it in such an exaggerate manner, in "non piu mesta" she sounds like a strangled parrot!

A fun compilation of arias and songs!.......2000-05-22

"A Portrait" is a collage of recordings from Ms. Bartoli's career. The highlight for me (from the many enjoyable numbers) is her "Bel raggio lusinghier" from "Semiramide." I highly recommend this fine CD.

Pretty Recording of Italian Belcanto.......2005-10-19

Margiono's specific timbre is beautifully underscored by her four partners. The recording is a nice and unusual addition to
the current recordings of 'Arie Antiche' by Bartoli, Bayo, Vargas, Bruson and Bergonzi.
However, The Margiono Quintets Producers might consider a more original selection of Arie Antiche. Parisotti's collection
contains more than 84 items to choose from.
Only four of the 17 pieces on the CD are not in Schirmers selection of 24 Italian Arias - standard literature for any student of belcanto.
Ladies and Gentlemen - please surprise us ... !

Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

weirdly fascinating music!!!.......2003-12-05

I gave this disc only 4 stars because I'm not familiar with music of this period, so although I'd prefer to give this CD 5 stars, it might not measure up against other performances. Here you'll find a mix of instrumental and vocal music, and the sound is very different from anything that we associate with classical music in the vein of Bach or Beethoven. The instruments are reedier, the voice more nasal; I'm tempted to say, you might try to think of it as an intermediary between Gregorian chant and Baroque opera (especially Monteverdi), but it isn't quite as simple as that.

These are *really* new sounds and they conjure up a much different world than the string orchestras of the late 18th century. I found that there is something uniquely foreign in this music, as if it comes from an era just beyond our grasp. In my opinion, it's not jarring enough to be annoying (no atonalities or microtones) but different enough for you to think twice about its instrumentation and vocal mechanisms.

The melodies are rather catchy, and if you are adventurous then you might want to sample this music. The only note of caution I would give is that it took me a while to get into this music, whereas my parents still can't stand it, so its appeal (like everything else) is definitely not universal. If you can, listen to the sample tracks before you buy it.

Courts of Love.......2000-09-01

I chose this CD with absolutely no knowlege of the music of the time. I was looking for a CD to try out, one that I could listen to a couple of times just to see if I liked the style. As a fan of Eleanor of Aquitaine, I chose this CD because there are three songs by Bernart de Ventadorn, her protege. I was blown away when I listened to the CD - it's absolutely amazing! Mara Kiek has an incredible voice - I can enjoy modern talent while listening to the works of twelfth-century troubadours. The selections, especially "L'on qui dit q'amors est dolce chose" by anonymous and "S'ie-us quier conseil, bel' amig' Alamanda'" by Giraut de Bornelh are intensely beautiful. With the rich, sonorous music performed by Sinfonye, I can just close my eyes and imagine that I am in Eleanor of Aquitaine's court. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants some easy listening, romantic songs that have definitely withstood the test of time.

I don't pretend to be an expert on the Monteverdian madrigal. But I know good singing when I hear it, and there's plenty of that on this disc. Marco Longhini conducts a group of Italian singers and instrumentalists collectively called 'Deliciae Musicae' and they couldn't have a more apt name--their delight (and ours) in their performance of this music is evident from start to finish.

Monteverdi's First Book of Madrigals, primarily for five voices a cappella or lightly accompanied, was published when he was only nineteen in 1587. The texts are secular and mostly of the 'to die upon a kiss' genre. There are some humorous examples in addition to the earnest swooning and pining sort. And towards the end of the Book there is a triptych, the second and third of which are parodies of the first - rather clever, too. All of these madrigals are set to meltingly beautiful polyphonic music of the late Renaissance/early Baroque. It was later that Monteverdi took music in an entirely new direction.

Which brings us to the remainder of the disc: a collection of Monteverdi's madrigals that were not published in his lifetime, some of them much later than Book I. One of them, once thought apocryphal but later acknowledged to be by Monteverdi, is the extended 'Lamento di Olimpia', similar to the much better-known 'Lamento d'Arianna,' and comes from Ariosto's 'Orlando Furioso.' It tells of the betrayal and abandonment of a Dutch noblewoman by her lover. One can hear in this masterpiece the same kind of drama one finds in Monteverdi's better known operas.

The musicianship, production, notes are all exemplary. A hearty recommendation, particularly at this budget price.

Congolese rumba is an electrifying style that has produced some master musicians like Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau. But just as worthy of the accolades is guitarist Papa Noel. This disc, compiled from releases in 1984 and 1994, isn't so much a best of but proof that his music is a magical part of the continuum of rumba. While the singing, especially that of Carlito Lassa, is glorious, it's when Noel lets his fingers fly across the fretboard that the real magic happens. The fills, rhythm work, and solos on the sebene are all his work and dazzling in their fluidity and melodic invention. Always tasteful and succinct--though a listener might wish for more of him--he's a true genius of the instrument, swooping and gliding while the band holds a supple groove in the background. If you still think Clapton is God, this disc might give you pause for reconsideration. --Chris Nickson

Wonderful Example of Congolese Rumba.......2007-01-02

One of the greatest guitarists in any genre, "Papa" Noel Nedule delivers a perfect Congolese Rumba record. A former TPOK Jazz member (circa 1978-1988) along with vocalist Carlyto Lassa (also of TPOK (circa 1989-end) combine to deliver the most magical music you will ever hear.

The production of this record is crisp and clean. It is too bad this music isn't in vogue in the Congo or Paris. Fortunately, Noel disregards the current fashion of ndombolo and soukous in favor of timeless music. There is nothing old fashioned about this music.

You can also hear Noel on Mangwana's "Galo Negro" and with the Congolese super group Kekele. These records are still affordable, I believe. The demise of the record company, Sonodisc, has sent the prices of classic rumba into nosebleed territory. I do not know if Noel survived his battle with acute tuberculosis. I hope so. He is a sorcerer of the guitar in his own right. There's Franco, Docteur Nico and Papa Noel when it comes to the rumba congo guitar or any guitar for that matter.

If only it still sounded like this.......2003-04-08

Too bad modern Congolese music doesn't sound like this anymore. Too much keyboards/synthesizers, less musicianship and way too much hip-hop style posteuring and vocal hype.

That said, this is the real deal. If you want to know why Congolese rumba was so popular throughout Africa, here's why. The singing, the guitar work, the rhythms are oh so sweet. The early tracks from the mid-eighties (1,3,5,7) steal the show here because the vocals are as sweet and glorious as any to have come from the Congo (and there are many) and there's more bliss to the guitar work. The other tracks are great too, just that the singer is pales in immediate comparison, and the guitar has a mellower almost acoustic sound to it. Overall, this is an excellent CD.

Classic best........2002-11-26

This CD has the sound of classic soukous. The mellow harmonies and guitar work are nothing short of magic. Many of the songs are the best of other works by Papa Noel. No connoisseur of soukous should be without this album. This music is sweet.

Captivating Performances, Great Singer Indeed.......2000-05-05

The Edison recordings were made when Claudia Muzio was in her absolute prime. They catches her voice at its freshest. Yet, I find myself hardly prepared for such wonderful artistry and interpretative insights. Muzio's timeless singing has left indelible memories on all who heard her either in person or on records and she had a great influence on Maria Callas, her successor. Indeed, Maria Callas owed a lot to her great predecessor. Ward Marston reproduced the recordings with real affection and Muzio's unique voice rings out with arresting immediacy. This is a set that should find an exalted place in every opera lover's collection.

I am amazed to be able to hear the artistry of Claudia Muzio on CD. For those who have only heard artists from the turn of the century on wind up 78s the loving care with which these treasures have been restored with is truely a revelation. The singers of Muzios era were great storytellers of passion and expression. Muzios voice is delivered with simplicity of tone and accuracy of vowel. Her grace in phrasing must have influenced Tebaldi.
