As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

Dan's first album...Wiggle the Wiggles out of your CD Player.......2007-06-12

You may have seen Dan on various spots on Sesame Street, I first saw him in his yellow suit, singing Jump Up. This album continues the wonderful music that my daughter has turned my wife and my self on to. The beats are there, and the lyrics are very catchy.

So do yourself a favor, swap out Wiggles or Barney for Dan and his Friends, and enjoy kids music once again.

Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!

When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.

After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!

I bought this CD since Dan Zane is on the Disney Channel. My daughter absolutely loves it! She asks to hear "House Party" all day every day. We dance and sing and it has brought a lot of fun into our house.

His band Jane's Addiction helped grease the alternative-rock skids as the '80s hit the '90s, and Perry Farrell--pushing 50--now aims for a new decade and another century. The ethereal artist's revelry of contributors to his latest project includes one-named artists Flea and Fergie, Peter Hook (ex-New Order), and a creepy posthumous appearance by Jim Morrison. That's right: leave it to Farrell, creator of rock festival Lollapalooza and some of his genre's most impulsive music, to dust off the Lizard King, whose healthy vocal slinks and slides beneath the baiting, rhythmic lyric "Just try and stop us/We're going to love" (complete with a Ray Manzarek-like organ riff at the bridge). The novelty of "Woman in the Window" will undoubtedly generate the most attention. But Farrell's Satellite Party leaves plenty more on the table, channeling the punk-and-metal command of Jane ("Kinky," "Insanity Rains") with some of the pop sparkle of his Porno for Pyros ("Hard Life Easy," "The Solutionists"), while tossing in a couple of choice covers to boot: Rare Earth's "Just Wanna Celebrate" and the Bee Gees' "Lonely Days," recast as "Mr. Sunshine." --Scott Holter

Other versions of his songs........2007-07-28

A great and upbeat album, however three of the songs I have already heard in different forms on other albums. I wish all the songs were new, but I can understand Perry thinking that not everyone may have heard the songs.

"Wish Upon a Dogstar" is known as "Dogstar" on Hybrid's "I Choose Noise" album. Minus the guitars and a much more electronic sound. I actually prefer Hybrid's version.

"Kinky" is almost identical to "Dreamstalker," also on Hybrid's "I Choose Noise" album. Minus the vocals and guitars.

"The Solutionists" is yet another version of a song previously released as "Revolution Solution" by Thievery Corporation, featuring the vocals of Farrell. The Thievery Corporation version doesn't have as many sound layers to it, but is much more middle eastern sounding.

Great party album and amazing live band!.......2007-07-17

wow. I wasn't too exposed to Jane's addiction or Nuno's stuff...so my fairly unbias opinion is that this is a really good party album!

The tunes are mostly groovy and definitely grow on you. Admittedly, the thought of Jim Morrison's voice on a song sounded way weird to me, but I love that song! Ton's of other guests too.

SP is a great live act also! I am super excited to see them several times over the next three months as they are on tour with a band (that I probably like even more :-X) called MINK. Mink is another electric live band that really is great party music, but with a little more rock edge than SP. Two great bands touring for three months, do yourself a favor and see them (Mink's self titled debut comes out late August, don't miss out).

Five stars for satellite party's debut.

Don't think Jane's Addiction!.......2007-07-10

I'll start by saying I'm a huge Perry Farrell fan. I'm into his work with Jane's Addiction the most (I think the live, self-titled album is their greatest work). Satellite Party- Ultra Payloaded is definately upbeat and funky throughout- but I prefer the Perry Farrell that can be upbeat and funky as well as racy, deep and cutting edge. You don't get that side of his art in the lyrics on this album. "Wish Upon A Dog Star" is an obvious hit single attempt- all hooks, no substance. Perry is an incredibly talented writer and it saddens me to say his writing seems to have taken a step back on this album- the lyrics are under-developed and sing-song. Possibly some influence from Nuno (Extreme) may have caused the music on this album to be a lot "lighter" than what fans of Perry's music are really craving. There is some interesting guitar and bass work on the album, but nothing mind-blowing. The album is mediocre to good- better than that local band your sister raves about, not NEAR the calibur of Jane's Addiction or even Porno For Pyros. All that said, I have full faith that I will enjoy the material from this album a heck of a lot more when I see it performed live- Perry's just that great of a performer!

i hope this marks the begining of a new avenue for perry ...this sound could provide a rich texture much like janes did for all of us years ago . this a good cd more like 3 1/2 stars but not a 3 . not a waste of money . good house party tracks on here as well as some good stuff to add to your playlist . i would recommend it , great summer music....not angry like janes was ...but that fit the time much like this does...

This is a fun album.....and Nuno plays on it!.......2007-06-14

Perry Farrell has created a fun album of funky tunes that make you want to dance. He's supported by a good group of musicians who help him bring the songs to life. Most notable of these musicians is one of the most awesome guitar players the world has ever known - Nuno Bettencourt! Nuno also helped with production duties, clearly helping to give the songs that funky groove he's well known for and adding a few great guitar riffs and solos here and there to spice things up. It's safe to say that this album is not groundbreaking in any way but it certainly offers you some good sounds and fun grooves to help liven up your next party. Favourite songs include the groovy "Wish Upon a Dogstar" and "Celebrate" which has a bit of an Extreme (Nuno's former band) influence to it and the nice mid-album ballad "Awesome". Play it loud and have some fun!

Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

It all happened so quickly. Or so it seems. One day Sheed, Meany and Fat were grease monkeys at a makeshift garage in their Bowen Homes neighborhood, the next they were swiftly-rising hip-hop stars, progenitors of a growing musical movement they call ``hood rock.'

I bop,and pop to party like a rockstar, I thought I was home when I heard bowen home, The album is a must buy. I thought I would have been disappointed, but with tracks like "they like me", "something to talk about", and "world on fire", changed my views very quickly. you could only go wrong if you don't get this album. In other words, the Shop Boyz were drunk off their chairs, and high outta their mind when they recorded this album.

I'm not going to say that the Shop Boyz' debut, Rockstar Mentality, is completely unredeemable; but if you're heard the first single, which I'm sure you have, you've already heard the rest of this album. As lyricists, the Shop Boyz are some of the most mind-numblingly linear I've ever heard. As emcees, their flows are competent enough, but certainly nothing above average. The production? Well, most of the production is pretty tight, to be honest. The production is what really saves this album from being the catastrophy most expected it to be.

The lead single, Party Like a Rock Star, was marketed at just the right time. Kids nowadays are moving away from hip-hop, and focusing their attention on pop-punk groups like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and others cut from the same mould; so, in order to capitalize on some form of rock's resurgance in the mainstream, creating a track such as Party Like a Rockstar was the perfect gimmick, and marketing strategy. Mentioning prominent rock artists like Marilyn Manson and Travis Barker, and even the Osbourne family, was also a strategic move to show that the group has some knowledge of rock music; even though they've publically admitted that's far from the truth. So, with a new brand of "Hood Rock," which is basically the same formula Lil' Jon's followed for the past 5 years, the Shop Boyz released their debut album, hoping to move units based off of this track's success alone.

I don't see that happening too well beyond first week sales. The rest of this album follows the same format as that track, with the exception of the two tracks aimed for the ladies, Baby Girl and Next To Me, both of which are decent, musically. Rollin' was good on first listen, but the Beach Boys influence is just downright corny on second listen. The same can be said about the latin-tinged My Car, which, while pretty dope on the musical side of things, is just downright wack in every other aspect.

David Banner's beat on They Like Me sounds like it would've been better fitted on budget rap album from Koch, such as B.G.'s last group album. It's certainly not some of Banner's work, and you kinda feel bad for David just having his name associated with the track. The fact that Totally Dude is Party Like a Rockstar Pt. II is enough to make you smack each and every one of the Shop Boyz. Flexin' and Bowen Homes are genuinely good hip-hop songs from the ATL group, though.

In the end, the Shop Boyz present an album that is not so much a dissapointment, as it does manage to live up to (at least, my) severely low expectations. The problem is, it never goes beyond those low expectations. Proceed with caution when purchasing this album.

ENERGETIC Hood Rock music.......2007-06-21

Rock meets hip hop. This is good stuff, good tracks...overall a great debut from Atlanta's SHOP BOYZ. ENERGY MUSIC from the HOOD, with a dose of rock to take it to a different level. The album is fun and great to listen to when driving or at club. SHOP BOYZ aren't mocking rock, rather they respect and pay homage to the rockers and more importantly, the rockstar lifestyle. How's your ROCKSTAR MENTALITY? Yall definitely need to pick this up

Don't tag this as "indie" or "alternative" There is absolutely nothing exciting or indie about this album. The quirky, rough-around-the-edges, diverse songs of the first album have been replaced by top 40 radio wannabee garbage. I think even the band members know how horrible this album is compared to the first. They'll be opening for John Mayer or Matchbox 20 soon....

Nearly up to Par.......2007-07-19

I am a huge fan of Bloc Party, and ever since I discovered them, I have loved listening to their music. Their first debut, Silent Alarm, is an excellent album, and I kept that in mind when I purchased thier follow up album, A Weekend in the City. I must say that I was disappointed at first, mainly because A Weekend in the City is not the same as Silent Alarm. I was expecting the same catchy hooks, bouncy rhythms, and light pop rock sound. Bloc Party's second album is not the same as their first. I definitely applaud them for trying to maintain innovation, and not always play the same thing. Just recently I have started to listen to A Weekend in the City more often, and the more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. AWitC is darker, edgier, and plays with a raw, uneven sound. Even still, I think it is a good album that solid Bloc Party fans should invest in, or any lover of alt rock. "The Prayer" is the catchy hook song of the album, while "Hunting for Witches" has a neat and inventive sound. "I Still Remember" has traces of Silent Alarm's "Blue Light" in that it is mellow, melodic, and beautiful. I look forward to Bloc Party's next release, whenever it may come, and suggest going for AWitC. This album grows on you, and is really different than Silent Alarm. Change is good.

seriously. fingers out. put it on the cd sleeve. keep still and wait a few seconds...

okay. maybe if you have an imagination in hyperdrive but still, my point is that while "Weekend in the City" may lack the dancier and poppier aspects "Silent Alarm" posessed, the fact they've gone DEEPER into the instrumentals and textures and ambient noises make it so much more fulfilling! anyone can dish out some drum machine beats and a catchy guitar hook, and while this album definitely has that (hello? "Sunday" anyone?), I love how they took the direction of my personal favorite from "Silent Alarm" ("So here we Are") and just built so much on that.

Is "Weekend in the City" an album full of club-banger hits for the indie kids who still call themselves "hipsters" without irony? Probably not. Is it an album good for introspection while wandering around at 2am downtown in the city (not smart, but appealing!)? Most definitely. buy this album. you won't regret it.

A Solid, but Less Upbeat, Sophomore Album.......2007-06-29

There was a time, about a year and a half ago, when I considered Bloc Party to be one of my favorite bands. I listened to their debut, Silent Alarm, almost obsessively and still consider it one of my favorite albums - whether I needed something energetic or pensieve, I could, and still can, find it on that album.

Naturally I was excited about A Weekend In The City before I ever heard it, and upon hearing it I wasn't sure what to think. The first six of the album's eleven songs grew on me immensely, while the second half of the album blurred together without any of the songs making an impression on me. Upon revisiting them, I realized that the immediately listenable songs didn't necessarily have longterm playability; conversely, the five final songs reflect just as much, if not more care than the other tracks -unfortunately, when listened to consecutively, they do tend to sound similar. Listen to them separately, and they really do shine: particularly, 'I Still Remember' and 'Sunday' didn't really grab me when I first heard them, but now rank among my favorites by the band.

All in all, AWITC is a slower album to enjoy than its predecessor, with more of a focus on setting soundscapes than writing hooks for catchy choruses. If you enjoyed the more contemplative parts of Silent Alarm, you'll love A Weekend in the City. Otherwise, expect to spend more time becoming acquainted with the work here.

Is It So Wrong to Crave Recognition?.......2007-06-16

I saw this band on Late Night with Conan O'Brian and I was very impressed with their live performance of "The Prayer." The singer was Black, but his style was somewhere between, Robert Smith, of The Cure, and Feli Kuti, the Nigerian singer and Afrobeat band leader. Turns out the band was fronted by Nigerian-born singer Kele Okereke. The rest of the band looked like a lot of post-punk limey slackers, and by gum, they were exactly that.

From London and South East United Kingdom, this latest deconstruction and reassembly of the modern sound is astounding, indeed. "The Prayer" sounds like some kind of Gregorian chant, or possibly the throat singing of Tibetian monks. The ominous hum builds and is joined by the coolest guitar riff since Satisfaction, a crisp Telecaster riff, at once primative and modern. When Kele Orereke begins to sing, a similar mixture of modern and primative ensues, as electric guitars, bass, and drums, fraternize with an African chant. Lots of shifting tempos, noise and melody, melody OF noise, dance tempos, irresistable beats.

I found their page on MySpace and watched the video for "The Prayer" and some other songs. "The Prayer" video is very good, and it just shows some modern urban kids out for a night on the town, trying to find a cool club in which to dance. Kele is a face in the crowd, lost in the shuffle, but he knows if they would only give him a chance, they would see that he is really a unique phenomenon, worthy of their attention and patience. The lyrics are really very powerful.

Another video shows the band playing on a train, and is like one long pan from car to car of a moving train. Some kind of special effects technique was involved, because it seems like the eye of the camera dollys through the entire train, from engine to caboose, and the band and Kele keep popping up on every car.

Other videos show band members as animated cartoon characters. Shades of Scoobey Doo, or at least The Gorillaz.

I have just discovered this band, but from what I have seen so far, I am very impressed, and will pursue hearing more of their excellent music. A good place to start is on their MySpace page, and if you are intrigued like I was, you can get this album, A Weekend in the City, or else try their first album, Silent Alarm.

Here for the Party is a great debut album from Gretchen Wilson. It probably grates on the nerves of country purists, but whatever, I like it a lot. It is brash and rowdy quite often, with attitude, but not so as to be off-putting. Gretchen bills this as reveling in the kind of trashy side, and lives up to the billing. Her voice is perfect for what this album purports to be. Teh album starts very strong with 4 excellent songs:

When I Think About Cheatin' - good, reflective slower tune. Gretchen can
put real feeling into a ballad tune

The album gets kind of slower in teh middle. Then it gets faster with "When it Rains," which is a good honkytonk tune. The album closes with "Pocahontas" which is a good tune saluting her home town.

I don't listen to country very often, but Gretchen Wilson speaks to the country girl in me, and I love it. It takes me back to my childhood, and all of the wonderful people that I grew up with in the Midwest that cultured folk would call rednecks. I've got to say that Victoria's Secret buying high class broads are dull. The whole CD takes me back and her voice is beautiful too.

Some 70 years after being written, Joseph Moncure March's 1928 Jazz-Age poem, The Wild Party, proved it still knew how to inspire: a pair of musicals dedicated to the sultry tale of excess were produced virtually concurrently. Too bad good parties, like good jokes, are often hard to recount. While the Tony-nominated, star-studded, and short-lived Wild Party by Michael John LaChiusa embraced the dark side of the Prohibition-era fête, this off-Broadway production by Andrew Lippa tries too hard to have a good time. March's poem is a seething, seedy work filled with internal struggle, but on this disc we never sense that underbelly. It's not until Taye Diggs, as Black, sings the touching "Poor Child" that we sense any tenderness at all in this morality play. For lighthearted good times, Julia Murney as Queenie and Brian d'Arcy James as her abusive lover Burrs do the job. On the fun, upbeat numbers ("What a Party," "Raise the Roof") this cast shines. But, despite its fascinating premise--a life-changing, epic event in the lives of a bunch of Prohibition-era misfits--this musical somehow still suffers from shallowness. --Jason Verlinde

Amazing. Show-Stopping.......2007-07-10

I'm an admitted musical-theatre geek. But I like knowing about the "underground" shows.. the ones that never QUITE made it. This came to me from a friend who was running a basement theatre at a college, and I forgot his mentioning it for close to a year. When it finally came back to me, I bought it.. and was AH-MAZED. There are simply not words for this music, and the talent brought the show is phenomenal. I strongly recommend taking a chance on this one.. if you sing, there's something for every range; if you dance, there's TONS of great, high-energy dance numbers; and if you love theatre, this is as good as it gets.

I bought this album because I am a fan of Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs, and may I just say that it blew me away! Some of the songs are so beautiful, with amazing harmonies. Others have you wanting to jump up and celebrate like the characters. My favorite songs include: Look at me Now, Poor Child (really beautiful), Life of the Party, Let Me Drown and How Did We Come to This?. If you are considering purchasing this I uge you do so, you won't be disappointed.

NEEDS to be in any Broadway lover's collection..........2006-10-06

I was hesitant to buy this album because I was told it was a bit raunchy and not well done. I'm still kicking myself for not buying it sooner.

Lippa's "The Wild Party" has quickly risen to my top five favorite shows. The score is outstanding (who CARES if it doesn't consistently fit the time period), the lyrics are entertaining, and the cast...oh, the cast. I admit I bought it for the Idina Menzel factor, but after listening through it, Idina takes a backseat to the outstanding vocal performance of Julia Murney.

Julia Murney, as others have said, is a POWERHOUSE. Not just in the heavy-hitting songs like "Raise the Roof", but in every song she sings. It's dumbfounding. Since then I've seen her perform live, and I must say that the woman is a superb actress- you can tell even by her singing.

It is unfortunate that this show released the same year as LaChuisa's "The Wild Party" on Broadway, but that doesn't mean it's lower caliber by any scale. In fact, I prefer this show. The reviewer who compared Sondheim to Lachuisa and Larson to Lippa was on the right track. Though I would suggest that if you like "Chicago" or "Wicked" at all, you'll probably like this version. It is a lot more fun and the songs are top-notch.

All I can say is BUY THIS ALBUM. I can't imagine anyone regretting it.

If you scored three or more A's, you will be happier with the Lippa version of this show, as it is a typical book musical in the modernist vein, with an emphasis on musical numbers that function like set-pieces rather than plot points.

If you scored three or more B's, you will be happier with the LaChiusa version of the show, as its score is more stylistically appropriate for the time period. It also develops its characters through music rather than through the script, with an ironic post-modern approach to the subject matter that doesn't attempt to dispell the moral ambiguity of its characters.

I am a musical theatre addict and am always on the lookout for exciting, little known shows. And let me tell you, musical theatre fan or not, this music is infectious. The music is so upbeat and the singers so powerful that you will want to listen to this CD on repeat. I rarely buy CDs anymore... in fact, this is the first CD I've bought in about 3 years. I was not disappointed. The Wild Party music is addictive and it amazes me that this show was never on broadway, based on the music alone and the apparent talent of the cast.

When you've got it, you've got it! And it just shows that it doesn't matter how old you are as a performer - Bassey has got IT to burn. Dame Shirley Bassey is back better than ever with an album that would give any of the one-hit "Lohan/Hilton/Spears" wonders more than a run for their money. Shirley's version of Pink's "Get The Party Started" is almost a Bond Theme for the new millennium! This septuagenarian diva has a Top 10 UK album and deservedly so. BETTER THAN I THOUGHT.......2007-07-15

When I first learned that Shirley was releasing yet another remix album, I was disappointed, as I was hoping for an album of all new material. But I was pleasantly surprised. The entire album is very enjoyable, and the two new songs, Get The Party Started and The Living Tree, is some of her best work. At 70, her voice is still amazing and a joy to listen to. I would have rated this album 5 stars if it contained all new material. To this day, Dame Shirley Bassey rocks my world!!!!

Just in time for sultry weather festivities, the trusty world music compilation label Putumayo has put together yet another dynamite party album. From the opening 1-2-3/1-2 clavé of Raúl' Paz' "Mua Mua Mua", which is soon overwhelmed by electronica only to re-emerge at will, the beats are as relentless as they are caressing. The set covers a lot of ground geographically, as Puerto Rican salsa, Mexican and Colombia cumbia and Cuban rumba have long since become international preoccupations, performed by local practitioners in every corner of the globe. Africando, with its blend of West African salseros and New York-based Latin all-stars, and Riccardo Lemvo's suave rumba Congolaise via LA, have repatriated rhythms that came from Africa in the first place. Belgium is an unlikely pit-stop, but Gabriël Rios' Santeria-infused "Bones Bugalu" has plenty of authenticity plus panache to spare. The grooves just keep coming, so put on those dancing shoes, snag an ice-cold forty-ouncer of malt liquor from the corner bodega and swing the night away! Album Description

¡Baila!.is a global Latin party featuring salsa, cumbia, and meringue mixed with contemporary dance beats and rhythms. The party starts in the streets of Havana before hitting the road. Raul Paz kicks it off with "Mua Mua Mua," seamlessly blending the deep grooves of his native Cuba with the contemporary stylings he's picked up since relocating to France. Back in Cuba NG La Banda offer "La Cachimba" their mission statement announcing the virtues of a new musical style that's sure to make you dance. Next the party travels to Colombia, where the collective known as La-33 is revitalizing salsa by reconnecting it to the genre's golden era of the 1960s and 70s. Not to be outdone, however, New York delivers a rhythm-driven one-two punch with The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Yerba Buena contributing the best of the old school and the new. On the West Coast, Argentinean ex-pats Los Pinguos and Congo native Ricardo Lemvo integrate various Latin elements that keep the party people on their feet.

The next stop on the party express is Belgium, where Gabriel Rios landed after leaving his native Puerto. Experimenting with a variety of influences while maintaining his deep Latin roots has made this unique musician an unlikely pop star in his adopted home. Next we travel to Stockholm, Sweden, where the high-powered ensemble Calle Real is bringing a thaw to their native city. The Africando All Stars and Brooklyn Funk Essentials round out this collection, proving once and for all that the party is right here.

A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to United for Colombia in support of their efforts to help children who are victims of landmines in Colombia.

Perfect from start to finish!.......2007-05-31

An absolutely irresistable collection of dance salsa! The first two cuts are absolutely spectacular. Everything else is nearly as strong. There is not a throw-away on this CD. I took a Cuban Salsa dance lesson recently, and the instructor played "Mua Mua Mua" 3 or 4 times every lesson for 7 lessons, and the class never tired of it, we just loved the song more each time! The entire CD stands up well to repeated listening. It has a nice variety, with a couple tracks having a reggaeton sound, and a couple cumbias, while sticking closer to true cuban salsa rather that the Americanized club sound. Mostly though the sound is pure and true Salsa. If that is what you are looking for, this is a must have disc!

Love Putumayo music.......2007-01-05

This is one of my favorite Putumayo cds, although I love them all. It is fun, energetic and makes my 19 month old son show us his moves! A must for music lovers.

New Style Salsa and Latin Flavors.......2006-08-28

Putumayo always puts out a quality product, and this disc is no exception. The collection of salsa and latin rhythyms is a collection spanning several countries, but all of the tracks are lively upbeat and fun. several of the tracks include electronic elements, such as electric drumbeats and samples. This allows the listeners to see what is being done with a now classic genre to revitalize it. this new generation of Salseros breathes new life into a now-classic music style.
I would recomend this for any casual listener interested in hearing some modern style salsa music. fun to dance to and upbeat and cheery.

TRULY A SENSATIONAL PIECE!.......2006-05-24

This music makes you want to get up and dance! The first few tracks are the best, but the whole CD is very good. I could not stop listening to son fro by africando and many more. Hide this CD because once you pop it in, your friends will never want to give it back to you. After owning gypsy caravan, afro-latino, afro latin party, salsa around the world, cuba and many more i have come to say that this is one of the best putumayo we have seen up to date. Also check out putumayo colombia-It is sure to get you dancing like you have never danced before!
