5 out of 5 stars Enraptured and inspired recordings!.......2006-09-08

This set of Beethoven' s piano trios has overly been one of the most famed in the late sixties. The inspired and magnificent musical chemistry among these three soloists was of first-rate class. On one hand you should be aware the fabulous rapport between Mrs. Dupre and his husband Mr. Barenboim in the set of cello sonatas; on the other hand Pinchas Zukerman and Barenboim recorded too some Beethoven 's violin sonatas; so it's not easy to understand the positive vibes.

It should be underlined we are talking interpretative freshness, and that youthful breadth among this ensemble that hardly, adding all his ages, would be under the 100 years. If you are seeking for definitive versions, go for the set of Kempff, Szerying and Fournier, but this is a very wise option.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure!!!.......2006-05-03

It would take a long, long time to write all that could be written about this historic CD. Here, you have three of the best musicians ever in their respective fields playing some of Beethoven's very best music. I now have a large classical music collection. This CD is one of the gemstones of my collection. I love it. Reference grade.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best.......2007-01-10

My husband and I have loved the Beaux Arts Trio for many years and were very happy to find the edition of the Beethoven piano trios. The interpretations are superb, the playing is masterful and flawless. As long as the pianist Menahem Pressler will remain with the Trio, we will always try to hear them in concerts or on CD. We own most of their recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven shines.......2006-09-24

When one thinks of Beethoven, one often imagines the grand symphonic sound. This collection of piani trios, however, is a feather in the wind. They are beautiful and warm. There is room to breathe as one basks in the sheer genius of this composer's gift of melody and composition.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and eternally listenable.......2006-04-11

I decided one day to look into string chamber music, and lucked out completely by getting this five-disk series.

I was not familiar with these pieces and am still amazed that such sounds were ever created or could be conceived of.

I particularly love the third CD in this production.

I would love to put the first few chords on Trio 7 on my cell phone, it would be so superior to everybody else's little ditties that we all suffer through!

I have listened to this CD for a couple years now and do not tire of it.

Ben

4 out of 5 stars Trios and music education.......2006-02-26

I have become interested in trios since we had a visit this year of a wonderful trio that played Haydn, Brahms, and Schubert. I realized here was a whole area I had missed. Since then I have been making up for it. I am learning much about various composers I already thought I understood fairly well. What has been most surprising is the function of music in the home -- the market these pieces were primarily written for. With that in mind, it is certainly interesting to imagine what a home must have been like in the evening with some friends playing these pieces. They must have been fairly accomplished or these would not have gone very well. They are challenging. What does that say about the way people thought? How did music influence their imaginations and their reasoning? (The Mozart Effect). I find that even though I enjoy these what makes them worth having and listening to is this bit of cultural imagining I add to listening to them. That said, I have not figured out yet if I have a favorite. I know the Schubert was the favorite of the cellist that recently visited and he explained why. But that was from the point of view of a person playing. Otherwise, I wonder if these are more like baseball. They can be really boring if you are not in the game.

3 out of 5 stars Caution On This Set.......2006-02-21

The piano is not balanced with the violin and cello, it drowns them out. The violin at times is quite muted and the cello is often indistinct. Listen to the samples critically before buying. I found the same problem on another Philips set of Haydn Piano Trios.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2007-05-26

A bit of a mixed bag. The symphonies are superb. This is one of the great symphony cycles. The piano sonatas are good, very good (analog) sound. The quartets are well recorded indeed, but there are better cycles out there. The rest is OK, and the sound is genrally good.

3 out of 5 stars Look at the List of Performers First.......2006-11-17

If you want most of Beethoven sitting on one bookshelf, this is a great bargain (especially if you shop for it on amazon.de). But few if any of the performances represent the pinnacles of interpretation that most listeners demand when Beethoven is the composer. The symphonies for instance: can Blomstedt be compared to Furtwangler or (if you lean toward historically informed instrumentation) Gardiner? Most amazingly, the artists who perform the quartets -- the heart of Beethoven's music -- are not even named in the listing.
On the other hand: Vivaldi: The Masterworks is a collection including the very best interpreters, such as Fabio Biondi! Bach Edition (complete Bach) is a fabulous selection of recordings made over 20 years, and almost the same praise can be given the Complete Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars this "masterworks" series is available much more cheaply from Amazon France.......2006-05-28

there are several sets in this series and it's much cheaper to buy these from Amazon France.

included are bach, beethoven, vivaldi, brahms, dvorak, schubert, handel, hayden, and mendelssohn.

they're even cheaper than the list price once u go through the checkout (VAT is removed for overseas (out-of-france) purchases).

**also, the 'complete works of mozart' set is much cheaper there (or at Amazon Germany), too. the 'complete works of bach' is due out later this year.

3 out of 5 stars You heard guy below: Beethoven needs the royality checks! .......2006-04-07

There is quality beyond the Austrian green cardboard (which is lovely to look at, to say the least). In fact, the performance of the symphonies (Dresden Staatskapelle and Herbert Blomstedt) is alone worth the price. The Staatskapelle is a solid group, and Blomstedt, although less wellknown, holds his own. It should be mentioned that Blomstedt recorded many of the most celebrated 20th composition CDs on the market, and definitely knows his stuff. Peter Wohlert recorded mostly for compiliation lables, but to be selected by the Berlin Phil shows that he is a formdiable conductor in rank as well.

Should you buy this collection then? Given the fact that each CD cost $1.75, there is definitely the bargin factor. However, Beethoven's music desveres the top interpreters and musicians of our time - and this applies for all of his music, not just the symphonic. If you are into bargins, then proceed to buy this collection. However, if you save up a bit more, you can buy Karajan's 1963 Beethovens symphonies along with Kempff's 1956 sonata cycles for just a bit more than 70 bucks. Shop around for the string quartets, and the complete overtures should range anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks depending on the conductor/ensemble.

Overall, this is certainly an exceptional bargin. However, quality matter more than money. Besides, chicks dig people with sophisticated tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Buy my box Set!.......2006-03-21

Awesome deal, 40 CD box set of me, Beethoven! There are 3 principle reasons you should buy this box set:

This box is QUALITY my friend, made of the finest, Austrian cardboard with a lovely green finish, it is made to last! You can just set it on your dresser and whenever you need a Beethoven fix you can just pull a CD out. But don't you hate getting your CDs out of order so you can't find what the hell you're looking for?! Not with this set! They are well organized into symphonies, concerti, sonatas and such, so you can find EXACTLY what your looking for, and they have big numbers on them so you can put them right back where they belong.

And the music! Need we go into this, composed through the inspiration of God himself and penned by the greatest composer who ever walked the streets of Vienna, me, Beethoven! Top notch, all done by top performers and recorded at high, clear, digital quality, stick one in your stereo and rock out man! All of my great and mighty works are here, absolutely sublime!

Lastly, you'll be supporting me, I need those royalty checks to keep rolling in!

Buy it if you love me or just buy it if you want people to think that you're sophisticated (the chicks also dig it, I should know: Antonie Brentano, giggity!), you can't go wrong!

Album Description

This recording of music by Tasmanian-born Peter Sculthorpe contains works that are related to the unique social climate and physical characteristics of the Pacific region. Earth Cry for didgeridoo and orchestra is a straightforward and melodious work whose four parts comprise quick, ritualistic music framed by slower music of a supplicatory nature and an extended coda. The Piano Concerto, written within the European concert tradition, is in one continuous movement, consisting of five sections with musical ideas from the ancient court music of Japan and the Balinese gamelan. From Oceania is composed in what is known as Sculthorpe's Sun Music style, in which the orchestra is treated like a giant percussion instrument.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Cool.......2006-07-02

Listening to Sculthorpe's music is quite an experience. It's as if the music takes you to another part of the world. The sonorites are unlike anything I've heard in anyone else's work. Sculthorpe's compositions are truly unique. The music is primal, flowing, intense, mysterious and intriguing. It's as if the music evokes some kind of call to the naturalistic side of mankind. This recording has several great pieces on it that are unlike any other music I've ever heard.

The disc opens with Earth Cry, a dialogue between a digeridoo soloist and a full orchestra. It is somewhat reminicient of a tribal dance. The music depicts a cry of nature. It's wild, even somewhat animalistic. The orchestra screams with bombastic, dissonant chords, and the digeridoo imitates the sounds of many wild animals. Earth Cry is a very intense experience.

Following Earth Cry, we have Memento Mori. Sculthorpe makes use of the low strings with this piece. There is a lot of mystery in the opening passages, but soon we encounter flowing music. There are some beautiful melodies played by the strings. The piece slowly picks up in tension and volume. The lush chords wash over the listener. The multiple textures throughout the orchestra are countless. The piece just unfolds. It doesn't exactly build or anything. That's the beauty of it. It just happens.

Sculthorpe's epic piano concerto is unlike any other piano concerto I've ever heard. The music is very mysterious and looming, foreshadowing the chaos and rampage that follow. The harmonic sounds in the piece are quite unusual, but accesable. It's a constant shift between the dualities of dissonance and consonance. What I like most about Sculthorpe's piano concerto is that it's not as much about the technical virtuosity of the solo, but that the soloist and the orchestra work together to paint an incredible picture. Sometimes, the soloist acts as a tinkling acompaniment to another orchestral instrument with a whining melody. The concerto is performed in one massive movement and there is plenty of room for artistic flair from the soloist. The piece builds to a resonant climax and sends the listener into Nirvana.

Following the piano concerto is "From Oceania." This piece tends to make very good use of the sections of the orchestra that fade into the woodwork much of the time. Sculthorpe features the Low Brass and Percussion sections to create a piece of exciting rhythms and incredible tension. Sculthorpe grabs other instruments to make many interesting sounds like screaming high violins and strident pitch-bending reeds. This piece is probably the most abstract of all the pieces on this album, so traditionalists beware.

The disc closes with "Kakadu," a piece that opens with an exciting rhythmic pulse but later falls in to holes of vast, empty space in the orchestra. The piece alternates between the harsh, tense sonorites and victorious, celebratory passages. There is also a beautiful and tremendously exposed oboe solo, not to mention a chorus of bird calls from the high strings.

Sculthorpe's music is especially unique. I'm not sure that I have used adequate words to describe it here. The only way you can know for sure how this music will affect you is to experience it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Maestro.......2007-01-03

I consider myself fortunate to have found this gem. I have always admired Casals not only for his extraordinary musicianship but also for his political courage. The story of Prades is heart warming and the music is a rare treasure. If you are a Casals fan, you might also want to hear Casals conducting Beethoven's 7th Symphony...a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this any more..........2006-11-28

The quality of the MUSIC here is remarkable. Many of the world's elite classical artists of the post-World War II generation are here - and the result is magic! A few of the highlights for me are the Mozart Piano Quartet No. 2 (disc 1), Beethoven Cello Sonata in A Major (disc 10), Mozart Oboe Quartet (disc 7), and many more...

You might wonder, however, how these live 50's recordings compare to recordings made in the digital era? Well... in a word, very good, very good indeed considering. Occasionally there is audience coughing (primarily just during the breaks between sections) - after all this was recorded live and you can also sometimes hear music pages turning on the stage if you listen closely. However, the sound is about as full range as you could ask for and the hiss and noise levels are very acceptable and not ever intrusive - I did note that the string instruments generally sound very good while the piano does not always fair quite as well, sometimes sounding slightly boxy - the piano is just far more difficult to record in any live setting because it is more dependent upon the room acoustics. Still, overall, the restoration is very good and trust me, you will become engaged in the MUSIC very quickly and forget all about any limitations of the recordings.

To summarize, as other reviewers have also noted, the sound quality, while not perfect by digital standards, is indeed very good - the important thing is to be assured that sound quality considerations never get in the way of the fantastic, wonderful performances. They really don't make music like this anymore.... well maybe they do sometimes, but not on thirteen discs in a row! Of course, I'm now going to purchase the second box set.

5 out of 5 stars Treasure!.......2003-06-19

When I first heard this set, I thought to myself: now I know how Howard Carter felt when he looked for the first time into Tutankhamen's newly-excavated tomb. Maybe you know the story: As his colleagues broke the seal on the long-undiscovered tomb's final door, Carter peered into a completely dark treasure room, illuminated fitfully by the beam of his flashlight. Someone asked, "What do you see?" and he answered, "Wonderful things!" Well, this set of Casals & Friends performances from early 1950s Prades Festivals also offers an unbelievable wealth of long-unheard, wonderful things. It is impossible to overpraise this production, or find the words to adequately thank Music and Arts for issuing such extravagance in these days of penny-pinching from what we used to call the major record companies. Thirteen (!) CDs of live performances, most featuring Pablo Casals working with front-rank collaborators, and all worth hearing many times over. Highlights? Casals, Rudolf Serkin, Alfred Cortot and Eugene Istomin survey all the Beethoven cello sonatas; Casals and Menuhin treat us to all the Brahms trios; the great, lamented William Kapell plays glorious Mozart and Beethoven with a young Arthur Grumiaux; the Vegh Quartet offer marvelous Schumann ..... and many, many more. Yes, you learn that even Willy Kapell could smudge a note now and then when performing 'live.' But, overall, the mistakes are few, and the musical insights so numerous as to defy listing. Note that these performances are completely different from those other, "official" live Prades recordings issued by Sony/Columbia/CBS over the past 30 years, so if you own the Sony CDs (and you should!), rest assured that while there is some overlap of repertory, you will not be duplicating performances. (On the other hand, 9 of the 13 discs were previously issued a few years back by Music and Arts.) Sound quality is mono and variable, but never less than completely acceptable. In fact, the sound quality (as realized by ace M&A engineer Maggi Payne) is surprisingly good considering that many of the performances apparently originated in the naves of ancient stone churches, not exactly a recording engineer's dream soundstage! Packaging is spartan, but well-designed and attractive: paper envelopes contain the CDs which are held together in a space-efficient soft box. Full liner notes helpfully discuss the origins of the Prades Festivals, and provide a limited discussion of participating artists other than Casals. (The fabulous Kapell performances -- of music he recorded nowhere else -- represent the pianist's only appearance at Prades, just a month or two before his tragic death in a plane crash.) Final word: In this set you get some of the greatest performing artists of all time playing some of the greatest chamber music ever written ..... and for an unbelievably low price. Unless you are completely averse to live music-making or have no tolerance at all for fallible sound, you need to own and hear these discs, over and over again!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Trio in the 20th Century.......2000-06-19

You would never disappointed by this acclaimed trio of pianist Eugene Istomin, violinist Isaac Stern and cellist Leonard Rose. This 4-CD set, recorded during the prime of the musicians, is such a historical record on Beethoven's compositions. Stern's violin is energestic and sharp as a knife, while Rose's cello wraps the pieces up with a sweet but powerful way. Well, Istomin's piano is somewhat lack of charisma, however, his sound is not buried under his great partners' performances. Especially, the Trio, Op. 1, No.3, on the second disc, is a superb combination of the three. It is sad that the trio ended by the death of Leonard Rose in the 1980s. It could have been delightful if we were able to see the three musicians' performances today.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Beaux Arts Trio At The Height Of Its Artistry.......2001-11-11

Simply the finest recordings I have heard of Beethoven's piano trios. The chemistry amongst cellist Bernard Greenhouse, pianist Menachem Pressler and violinist Isidore Cohen is the finest I've heard from any trio. These performances are replete with ample warmth and grace. Although these aren't state of the art recordings from Philips, the sound quality is excellent, even from the late 1970's analogue recordings that comprise part of this set. Anyone looking for a first rate collection of Beethoven's piano trios will not be disappointed with this splendid set.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars for Beaux Arts Trio.........2000-06-13

The Beaux Arts Trio continues to be one of the best chamber music groups around. I have several recordings from them, this is my favorite. I have to say that this set may have been my most worthwhile music investment. I urge anyone who enjoys Beethoven and The Beaux Arts Trio to purchase this cd set, it is worth its weight in gold!
