5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wee Bit O'Heaven.......2007-07-26

I have been looking for John McCormack on CD for years. I was thrilled when I found this and other CDs on Amazon. I have an LP that I bought decades ago and I have almost worn it out. The CD quality music is so much better!

5 out of 5 stars Legendary selections by a legendary voice.......2004-03-24

With special emphasis on the variety presented in this collection, this album has a broadness of scope that will appeal to anyone who appreciates the magic of the human voice.
McCormack was perhaps the most popular entertainer in the world during his career, comparable with the superstars of today, only richer in the currency of his day.
Though purists may have criticized his shift to the popular venue as opportunism, and perhaps desertion of his training in the classical tradtions, he was simply presenting what people wanted to hear. Whether he set a pattern of career management followed by modern entertainers or was simply happiest when the accolades flowed over him matters not. The talent and richness are his legacy to us.
His range and vocal dexterity are well illustrated and represented by this larger than usual collection, and anyone with a particular favorite tune in his rather loose genre will likely find it here.
After a journey through this collection, listeners may well gain another special melody or two for addition to their personal list of "best ever" songs and singers.
Although it may be considered a bit foolish, some will choose this album for only one or two tracks. Some call that trait wasteful, but when a jewel of performance is played again and again, the teardrop may fall once more, and the heart will thrill yet again.
This album will please many musical palates, even those who claim no special fondness for "Irish Tenors."

5 out of 5 stars Mountain High with Elena Skye.......2005-07-06

Is Elena Skye channeling the legendary, and unjustifiably obscure, Ola Belle Reed? Apparently, though not necessarily. The first time I heard Elena Skye and the Demolition String Band sing and play these tunes I was actually 'high on a mountain' in Greensboro Bend, Vermont. Elena and the band were performing at an outdoor concert on a perfectly blue-skied July day. The site overlooks a broad green valley high in the hills near a small village in northeastern Vermont. Talk about atmosphere and background for this authentic mountain music from the rural, remote corners of Appalachia (by way of Hoboken, New Jersey I gather). Elena's voice was pure and true, plaintive and evocative as Ola Belle herself might have been. (Hard to say since almost none of Reed's material is currently available on cd. A pity that. But if Skye doesn't capture the spirit and authenticity of the originals it can't be done.) To call this a tribute album rather understates Skye's interpretation of Reed's songs; Skye manages to be both fresh and traditional. This music is accessible without being reduced to a slick pop pablum. Reverent is the best way to describe the approach here. Skye's expert mandolin playing accents and colors nearly every number. And her voice is as high and lonesome as they come, sweet as water from a high mountain stream and pretty as a wildwood flower. You don't need to be a fan of bluegrass, 'old time' music, or even 'Brother Where Art Thou' to enjoy the perfect artistry of this recording. Skye's style is as genuine and engaging as anything Lucinda Williams has managed. She has received not even a fraction of the recognition she deserves.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-01-20

I wanted to like this and the instruments are mostly good, but the singer doesn't have a feel for traditional or country music singing, and she sounds flat to me. I wish I could hear the same material by someone with a better range and expressiveness and who can really use her voice, like Patty Loveless or even better Gillian Welch. I think her songs deserve better treatment, but it was a nice thought. Maybe someone will run with this idea and make it into the tribute it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars There aren't enough stars in the sky(e)! .......2004-07-21

Last year at IBMA's World Of Bluegrass event in Louisville I stumbled across a jam session in which Elena Skye and her musical co-conspirator Boo Reiners were playing. When I first got there, I didn't think anything special was going on. Just another all-night jam in a smoky suite, right? But after I'd been there a while, I noticed that Elena and Boo, founding members of The Demolition String Band, were pulling the most amazing material out of their collective musical hat. People kept coming to the door, drawn by the sound of those great tunes, rendered in that astonishing voice.

Elena is a tiny vocalist with a huge voice that she controls expertly. One minute it's tender as a lover's smile, the next minute bold as a lover's demand. And Boo is one of those multi-instrumentalist genius fellows who can play anything with strings. The songs they played that night were all tunes they'd recently recorded for an extraordinary CD.

With "Where The Wild, Wild Flowers Grow," their loving tribute to the music of the late Ola Belle Reed, Elena and Boo have made an important contribution to the preservation of some of the strongest, twangiest music ever written by a daughter of Appalachia. Until Rounder reissues some of the old Ola Belle material, and/or a cool tribute album, this album might be considered the best resource for those who want to learn some of the more obscure tunes in Reed's catalogue. Yes, "High On A Mountain" is here, but also "Only The Leading Role," "My Epitaph," "Undone In Sorrow," and "Springtime Of Life." All powerful tunes, delivered powerfully. Elena invested so much of herself to pull the Ola Belle project together, and her commitment to these songs has finally paid off. If you like great songwriting, get this record. If you like great female vocalists, get this record! If you dig Ralph Stanley, Hazel Dickens, Del McCoury--get this record. What a fine time you'll have, with this raw, honest, hauntingly beautiful music.

"Grow Wild" is a thoughtful and compelling recording that will lift your spirit and remind you of how personally rewarding it can be to listen to music.

The album has a consistent theme and delivery system throughout, as if it were one song in many parts. The singer, Nahoo, guides you through a non-religious but very earthy spiritual journey of cultures. Each song is enjoyable the very first time you hear it, but each additional listening opens up a world of new sounds and musical conncections. It is always a wonderful experience to listen to this CD.

The AO vision is that through the eyes of children and the power of cultures coming together, the world is a more meaningful place. AO will prove this in 2008 when it is featured at the Olympics in Beijing.

this song is so great, it has an amazing and beautiful video to go along with it as well, kylie sounds beautiful, even more so than usual, she should do more soft songs, but theres a problem with this song,NickCave, ive never heard of this guy but his voice is to deep and monotone, i just hte it, sorry to any nick cave fans but thats how i feel, this song and video would be perfect without him, in the video though, thier perfromances are fanastic and moving, i just hate his voice, otherwise, its fine, i suppose his voice isnt to bad, its not like he has no singing talent, i just dont prefer him, but for those who do, i have to say this is a must buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars kylie is #1.......2002-08-11

Well Kylie just keeps getting better. She is easily the best Australian singer out there. This single proves that she is just as talented as she is pretty. The vocals are amazing and the beat is very good. This is definately a song for everyone including those who don't particularly like this talented singer. Keep it up Kylie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty girls make graves........2002-07-17

"Where The Wild Roses Grow" made Nick Cave an international star, largely due to the overwhelming popularity of Kylie Minogue. This single was his highest-selling recording to date because of this; her fans as well as his rushed out to purchase it. It's a great song with a wonderful video (available on The Bad Seeds' videos compilation). But the best part about this single is the B-side, "The Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltraine." It is one of my favorite Nick Cave songs (and that says a lot, considering his prolific output). "The Willow Garden", with vocals by pianist Conway Savage is also a nice touch to this trio of songs.

          Product Description

This second album from the Taos-bred, Albuquerque-based trio is a winner in every respect. "Where The Wild Things Grow" highlights the Muttz' wide-ranging musical styles, which contain heavy doses of reggae-influenced rock a la The Police, and a good smattering of psychedelic rock that conjures up visions of Cream. There is a high level of musical craftsmanship here. Chris Dracup delivers crisp, clean, and often lightning-fast guitar work. An outstanding rhythmic backbone is provided by Gail Boles on bass and Hunter Berner on drums. To top it off, these guys can carry a tune, surrounding it in layered melodies and harmonies that give the music a larger and richer sound than would be expected from this three-piece instrumentation. The lyrics to the 11 songs on the album are intelligent and represent only a portion of the band's list of 60 original compositions. The songs tell a story, relate a sentiment, or deliver a message. For example, "Wrong Train", the lead cut, is an angst-filled adventure for someone who realizes too late that he missed a sign and now "rides on the wrong train in the middle of the night." This, of course, is an apt metaphor for the way many people live their lives. The title cut, "Where The Wild Things Grow"' is laced with psychedelic guitar and jungle sounds that carry the listener through "the shadowland where the wild things grow, it's a savage land deep beneath my soul." "Western Man" is a humorous look at the macho cowboy type; "What Is Love Here For?" takes a stand against war and hypocrisy; "Walkin' a Straight Line" concerns the aimless wanderings of someone in search of affection; and "Lonely One" is a pep talk for some unfortunate soul who has insulated himself in a cold and friendless private world. 11 Songs + 2 Bonus Live Tracks

          5 out of 5 stars Muttz Rocked.......2006-10-27

I saw these guys at a bar called the Fat Chance in Albuquerque a few times and everytime it was a packed house. I still don't know why they broke up. Their music was a unique blend of reggae, blues and Rolling Stones inspired licks. The CD seems to be mixed by some one who was in love with the guitar player and heavily subdued the bass lines and drumming in favor of the guitar, however, the music speaks for itself and I highly recommend the album for listening, but as I understand it, the Muttz have not received any compensation for any of the sales of this CD online. The producer apparently has stolen all of the masters and continues to release the music for his own personal gain. The band has not received a pennny. It is rumored a New Mexico diablo will abscond his soul on a winter's new moon. However, last I heard, Chris Dracup had been cutting more music on his own label. I will be looking for it.
