Amazon.com essential recording

This is the record that started the Hildegard craze back in 1982--and you need only listen to Emma Kirkby glide and soar through Columba aspexit (the opening hymn) to understand why. Gothic Voices performs the music very simply, either alternating soloists and unison choir over a drone or using a single unaccompanied voice. The singers render Hildegard's extravagant poetic imagery and melody not with the rhythmically fluid, ecstatic approach favored by Sequentia, but with equalist rhythm and a calm, meditative quality. Gothic Voices' straightforward approach is less likely to send you into a rapturous trance than is Sequentia's, but in the hands of such fine singers as Kirkby, Margaret Philpot, and Emily van Evera, Hildegard's extraordinary texts and melodies are captivating--and clear enough to linger in the memory as melodies rather than just sensations. This record is still Hyperion's bestselling title by far--try it and find out why. --Matthew Westphal

4 out of 5 stars Hyponotic music from an early great composer.......2007-03-10

The Abbess Hildegard of Bingen wrote hypnotic, haunting music a thousand years ago (she lived from 1098-1179). The notes from this CD state that: "This recording draws upon Hildegard's large collection of music and poetry. . .which she continued to enlarge and enrich throughout her life. It contains some of the finest songs ever written in the Middle Ages. . . . The songs are conceived on a large--sometimes a massive--scale; it is in superabundance that Hildegard found herself both as poetess and composer." Hers is a very different style of music from what we are used to today. And the voices of Emma Kirkby and "Gothic Voices" (a group) appear to capture the spirit and soul of this music well.

Kirkby has a crystalline clear and clean voice. In "Columba aspexit," Kirkby and supporting voices paint a musical tapestry that is hypnotic (a common phrase that can be used across the songs). In "Ave, generosa," Kirkby sings the hymn solo and without any instrumental backing. An enchanting piece. Three tenors from "A Gothic Voice" essay "O ignis spiritus." Their voices meld together well and their take on this has a spiritual element. A final example (no need to mention each of the cuts on the CD). . . . "O Jerusalem" features both Kirkby and some members of "A Gothic Voice." The voices play off one another well. Another nicely done work.

This is a good introduction to ancient but interesting music. Kirkby once again shows her skills off to good effect, with an assist from "A Gothic Voice."

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums of all time........2007-03-06

This is the best Hildegard von Bingen recording I have heard. It features the marvelous English soprano, Emma Kirkby.

This is an older recording. I first bought the album on vinyl. I bought it again on CD. Now it is in heavy rotation on my ipod. This is simply one of the best pieces of vocal music ever recorded, any age, any genre.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Luminous.......2006-11-27

Landmark recording of the early Kirkby glorying in this beautiful music. Ears that can do East and West may like to sample 'Shruti' by Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay - a similarly evocative and remarkable recording.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2006-11-15

This CD is a Masterpiece. I often play this before I go to sleep. If you want a CD that will totally relax you and clear your sole then you can't go past this great piece of work. The music and voices are Heavenly. I really admire Hildgard and her work. She was very ahead of her time. I very highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Short, but still the very best of Hildegard of Bingen. Buy It........2005-12-20

'A feather on the breath of God' is a performance of eight 'Sequences and Hymns' by Abbess Hildegard of Bingen' which has been lauded by Gramophone Magazine as a 'Best of' in the year it was released.

I have heard two other performances of Hildegard of Bingen compositions and to my amateur ear, these are the best. With soloist Emma Kirkby plus the instrumental backup, they are certainly more interesting than the a capella treatment by the Anononymous 4.

Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Emma .......2007-01-09

This is beautiful instramental orchestration direct from the movie soundtrack. Even if you didn't see the movie, you will enjoy this wonderful soothing listening music.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-06-17

I adore the film and could watch it over and over again and the soundtrack is every bit as perfect and charming as the film!

4 out of 5 stars The music is far superior to the movie..........2006-06-13

It seems worth noting that I really disliked the movie, "Emma." I consider it to be nothing more than a modern-day soap opera in fancy clothing with more intelligent dialogue. Other than the "badly done, Emma, badly done" scene, I have no interest in watching the film again.

The soundtrack is another story. The music, when thankfully removed from the tedious movie, is absolutely delightful. I enjoy listening to it with some regularity, as it provides for most pleasant background music when I'm working or reading. I'm not familiar enough with the history of the music to know if it appropriate for the period during which the movie takes place, but it stands on its own.

My only complaint about the soundtrack is its somewhat repetitive nature. It seems as if the composer ran out of original themes and chose to revisit the same ones over and over again. Thankfully, those themes are some of the most charming, so it is still pleasant to hear. Nonetheless, I would have liked less repetition.

In any case, this soundtrack far exceeds the mediocrity of the movie, and I enjoy listening to it frequently

5 out of 5 stars Emma.......2006-04-17

"Emma" is an extrodianary motion picture. I could watch it over and over again. My favorite tracks are probably "main Titles" "Proposal" and "End Credits." Ms Portman did an excellent job connecting the theme of the film to the music.

5 out of 5 stars Classic place in your soundtrack library.......2006-01-01

If you enjoy classical music soundtracks, purchase this cd. "Main Titles" and "The Dance" are really worth the purchase, as are the sweetly and humorously simple "Mrs. Elton's Visit" and "Sewing and Archery". Of course, "Westin's Christmas Party" now has a place in our Christmas collection.

I love the subtle humor of this film and the soundtrack played to this superbly....with violins and clarinets playing key roles in the production....Rachel Portman goes from symphonic to quartet sounds fluidly to fit with the storyline of each scene.

I buy soundtracks when I really love a movie and this one was not a disappointment. This music holds up independently from the film. So many soundtracks have a grandiose overture effect that is much too heavy to enjoy without the visuals of the film. They are much better fading in and out with the action. This soundtrack stands alone and is peaceful, sweet, light...tender.

Like I said, if you enjoy classical music soundtracks, add this to your library; you'll not be disappointed.

Album Description

Limited Edition UK-only pressing of the 2006 album from Emma Bunton (AKA Baby Spice) features three bonus tracks: 'Something Tells Me (Something's Gonna Happen', 'Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps' and Por Favour'. Life In Mono is Emma's most honest album to date, an intimate reflection of Emma's life and loves that reveal more than she was ever expecting. Musically it sounds like a rich pop album even at first listen, with rich orchestral backing, gorgeous harmonies and the sort of chorus' Burt Bacharach could be proud of. It moves from the stunningly tender 'All I Need To Know' to cheeky jazz of 'Undressing You' and the luscious Carpenters style of 'I'm Not Crying Over Yesterday's' . Above all it captures Emma's thoroughly modern take on elegant 60's Pop. Universal.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Good.......2007-07-25

I received this CD in the mail today and finished listening it. I had to write a reveiw of the album. This was definitely better than the last album she has put out. The stand-outs for this one are tracks 3,5,8,9. They display a quality that is playfully mature for Emma. Something we didn't see in the last go around. Her voice illicits a teasing temptation and at the same time an innocence that can only be displayed by the one who was known as Baby Spice. Yes, that image is somewhat following her, but in this album, if you didn't know her previous identity, you would never guess. She has left that identity behind in most ways, but lovingly brings it back in slight glimpses and only at times when she needs it for those certain moments in the songs. Over all, this is a wonderfull album and the bonus tracks are nothing to be ignored. They are as much a part of the ablum as all of the other songs. Downtown and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps are great and give an extra dimention to this CD. This is a great third outing for Emma and she really is getting comfortable with this new image she has forged for herself. Hope you enjoy this CD as much as I have. You'll see, it is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars WOW. This album is FAB baby........2007-06-30

I left this review for a few days so I could give it few listenings.
Free Me was a really great album, which I did not buy until March this year.
When I first listen to it I was blown away, I just did not expect this from Emma.
Now over to Life In Mono, First listening to It did not seem as good as Free Me.
But its a grower Emma has a sweet singing voice, which is pleasant to listen to. All the songs are good, still having the 60s bossa nova sound to most of them. Best tracks are. Life In Mono, Mischievous, He Loves Me Not, I Wasn't Looking, Take Me To Another Town, I'm Not Crying Over Yesterdays, All That You'll Be, and Something Tells Me.
All in all this is a solid album, and is as good as Free Me if not better.
well done Emma for a third fantastic album, and the best so far.
Rating Six stars, yes it really is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Another great release... destined to be ignored in the US.......2007-06-20

Emma has given us another really great 60's influenced pop album. Out of all the Spice Girls, who would have imagined that the one called "Baby Spice" would end up with the most accomplished pop career? She chose substance over commercialism and really hit a home run with pop fans. Why hasn't she been asked to sing the next 007 theme song? Or alteast be a Bond girl in the next film?
All 3 releases have been laid back, and thoroughly enjoyable. I'm happily looking forward to more of the same.

4 out of 5 stars Great follow up!!!.......2007-05-12

Former Spice Girl, Emma Bunton's new album Life in Mono is a great step forward. It follows the same vein as her last album and I would highly recommend it if you loved her first.

4 out of 5 stars Almost a Pop Masterpiece.......2007-04-26

Its really ironic that the most 'untalented' of the Spice Girls bunch would consistently provide us with such good material into the 2000s. Her last album "Free Me" was a classic that still finds plays on my Ipod.

1. If you love 1960s 'girl-group' melodies, you will love this.
2. If you like film-noir, and the soundtracks to the James Bond and Austin Powers series, you will love this.
3. If you like very poppy verse-chorus-verse, you will love this
4. If you're into Bossa Nova, Brazilian beach pop, and a little bit of reggae, you will adore this.

At its best, this sounds like a lost soundtrack to some 1960s French masterpiece by Truffaut. Very "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" but with a lot more zest and pep. You really have to get it and find out what I'm talking about.

The only downside is that the opening track is the weakest here, so many people may be put off. Do get this and discover a fabulous artist you may have neglected until now just because of her "Spice Girls" tag.

To sum up, Emma is a million times more accomplished and a real artist when compared to the remaining Spice Girls. This one album is better than all the others' solo releases combined. Seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Roger Clyne's master work.......2006-07-13

I am a long time Refreshments fan who lost track of what Roger and PH went on to do afterwards. I caught up with them about a year ago and have not been disappointed. The first few Peacemakers CDs have moments of brilliance with just as many misses, but these releases led me to believe they were working towards something great. Americano is it. Plain and simple. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-03-10

If you're like most of my friends, you'll instantly love about three of the songs on this CD. Give the whole CD a chance and you'll start to love the others as well.
Since FFB&B, the Refreshments have been a staple in my collection and Americano! just adds to it.
See these cats live if you ever get the chance. They put as much energy into their shows as they put into writing the songs.
You won't regret buying this CD. Just don't loan it out or you'll probably never get it back.

5 out of 5 stars Best album I've heard in years..........2005-11-29

I got this one on a bit of a lark, not knowing what to expect. My first impression was - this is good. And it's grown on me since then. It's in heavy use in the car over many other classic artists. About the only other artist that seriously competes for time right now is Stevie Ray Vaughan (not that I'm saying they're similar, but to give you an idea of some of my tastes, which are rather wide ranging).

The first 5 songs are as strong of an opening set as I've heard in a while, the last 3 songs (including the "hidden" song) are engrossing, and the whole album is a blast. The songwriting is mature beyond what you normally find praised nowadays in the mainstream. Roger just tells stories that suck you in and pull you to the end. I'm not disappointed, except in all of the other claptrap that passes for rock nowadays on the radio. The rock is refreshing and varied, not stagnant (all the same style). This album explores a lot of areas and leaves you wanting more.

I wish he and his band came to the east coast more, to possibly see them live. I'm sure I would not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've heard in a long time, and that's only half the live show........2005-09-25

This band is excellent on CD and twice that live. I've seen them live three times now and am more impressed every time around. The band has taken time after every live show to meet every fan in attendance (how often do you see THAT?) and give autographs and a bit of friendly conversation. If you want to hear what you've been missing in the mainstream, buy this one. You will not be disappointed.

And as always, credit where credit's due for getting out from under the RIAA thumb! If you want to hear great indie work, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Roots-rock at its best!.......2005-06-25

I have always been a Refreshments fan, but kind of dropped off when they split and it was a while before I realized Roger was still putting out great music.

I happened to be in Spokane on business this past fall, and saw that Roger and his Peacemakers were playing at the Big Easy. One of those better decisions in my life deciding to go. What a great show, and I hadn't heard a lot of his post-Refreshments stuff (although he played plenty of his Refreshments music) but all the songs were instantly likeable and good.

So I got Americano. Truly an excellent CD. Now I happen to favor his slower numbers-- "Switchblade," "Your Name on a Grain of Rice" and "Leave an Open Door" are my favorites, but the whole album is great for a rocking, rootsy listen. Roger's lyrical imagery has always brought me right to the dusty, hot but beautiful Southwest, and his storytelling and heartfelt musicianship are truly superb.

Roger Clyne does not compromise-- he writes and sings exactly what he wants to and what he is good at. It's too bad he has not garnered more credit and attention, although it makes it kind of nice since he plays at such small, intimate venues and you can actually meet him/buy his band a beer after the show.

I have introduced this album to about a half-a-dozen people so far, and they have all loved it. It is one of my favorites of last year, and if I ever get a chance to see him live again I will do it in a heartbeat.

4 out of 5 stars a great soprano voice.......2007-04-11

Emma Shapplin has such a beautiful voice. I left this cd in a hotel room along with the rest of my favorites, luckily they found it and mailed it back. I am very impressed with her vocal ability and the music is simply divine!

5 out of 5 stars Opratica Supreme.......2006-10-02

This is an amazing album, beautifully recorded. Its pop-ified classic Italian style mixed with the lyrics derived from "old Italian" and hints at classical melody make for a real delight. Extremely powerful vocals that pierce through the dark aesthetic like the beacon of a lighthouse through a dense fog at night. If you're a fan of Opratica, or a fan of Sara Brightman who wishes she would take her lyrics more seriously, you will love this album.
While many compare Emma Shapplin to Sara Brightman, there are some notable differences. First is the raw power of Emma's voice versus that of Sara. While Sara Brightman is an exceptionally talented artist, I would dread her performance without technical augmentation. Emma on the other hand avoids the elaborate digital editing processes to the degree often heard on Brightman albums. Accordingly, it is possible to observe minor performance irregularities. However, such nuanced "flaws" are inherent to all great vocalist, and constitute more of individual stylization than "flaw." The absence of such character in Brightmans recordings simply attests to the overuse of digital augmentation to produce artificially "perfect" recordings, in a fashion akin to air brushing a super model's picture. Played back on high end audio kit you can even here the occasional recoil of a pianos dampening pedal, something which would certainly be edited out of a Brightman recording. All these things attest to the raw and pure integrity of Emma's recording. Additionally, the lyrics, when translated, are much less insipid than the usual Brightman tune. Though Brightman had to marry Andrew Lloyd Webber to launch her career in full, I suspect Emma Shapplin's pure technical talent and more advanced aesthetic sensibility will assure her a successful cross-over career without any such convenient relationships.

The reasons to listen to this album...
Beautiful woman with beautiful voice sings beautiful songs. This album is one of high-class standards of crossover genre (well balanced elements of classical, pop, electronic, New Age and even Celtic music are fused into this new genre). One hit - "Le Notte Eterna" worth the whole album.
I can`t tell you that I`m listening to this CD every day, but when I`m in the mood to hear some calm, light and beautiful but not much serious music - I`m listening to this album.

If you like this style of music, try also CD by
Spanish singer-songwriter Nadia "This Is My Life".
She also plays electronic keyboards and her music is very beautiful - mix of romantic pop, new age electronic music with the touch of light classical sound.
CD by Nadia was released by label Neuronium.

5 out of 5 stars How Can You Down Emma Shapplin?.......2005-03-16

You can't. That's the honest truth. The music is sensationally beautiful and it is magnificent that her voice is so gorgeous. I cannot believe her talent! I enjoyed the CD very much so, and as a matter of fact, I thought it was so wonderful that I listened to it for a week in a row! I am very pleased with it. I would recommend this to ANYONE even if they're not an Opera Fan. I personally adore Opera and I think it takes extreme talent to sing like Emma Shapplin or Operatica. I recommend Operatica: Shine and Operatica "O" Vol. 1 to anyone who likes Emma Shapplin as well.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of the night.......2005-02-04

Emma Shapplin's voice one of the moest beautyful voices i have ever heard. So lyric, so dramatic, so emotional.
She is the best coloratura soprano i have ever heard.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful oratorios.......2005-09-28

I own the two oratorios separately. I bought first Messiah because I needed a reference recording for our choir performance on Christmas 2000, and my then choir director recommended the Tavener Choir and Players. I followed his suggestion and I must say that to this day I haven't regretted it. It's very balanced in tempi, never too quick neither too slow as other recordings I have heard like the Gardiner or Sawallisch ones. Every time we schedule Messiah for a concert I keep coming back to it to get into the proper mood for singing. The cast of singers is really excellent - there is a counter-tenor sharing the mezzo/alto role with a mezzo (which is quite unusual but refreshing anyway) as well as two soprans sharing role too, which usually other recordings don't have. But everyone of them is magnificent, though I tend to have a partiality towards the bass, David Thomas, specially regarding the arias "The trumpet shall sound" and "Why do the nations". Such a booming voice, and such a homogeneous sound in all of his fach.

Having such good opinion of the ensemble, I went for the Israel in Egypt, which was a discovery. Some of the singers are the same
as in the Messiah cast, and includes Anthony Rolfe Johnson and Nancy Argenta...which are an added plus. Unfortunately, there is no mezzo/alto in this recording but a counter-tenor...sigh... There are two soprans and two basses sharing roles as well. Tenor and alto are just one singer each. I have been said that it is quite rare to find a whole recording of this score, since its excerpts are usually used to "make up" for a complete recording together with other pieces by Handel. The work in itself is very much like Handel, full of sensitivity and the exact amount of sadness - "The ways of Zion do mourn" makes my hairs stand on end, thrills me so! - and weird humor, like when telling about the 7 plagues Yahwe send to Egypt in order to make the Pharaoh free the Israelites... "Their land brought forth frogs" starts with the violins sounding like leaping frogs! And I have named just a few of the pieces. It is really an adquisition worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful execution and extraordinary value.......2005-04-20

Andrew Parrott's recordings of Handel's "Messiah" and "Israel in Egypt" are reintroduced in this budget box that has so much going for it that no version extant can really compare in terms of musical value, execution of the score and dollar value. At a list price of $17 -- and usually available for less than that -- this four-disk set presents a tremendous value to lovers of this music.

Parrott's rendition of the less often recorded "Isreal in Egypt" Passover story is still considered by most critics to sit at or near the pinnacle with Gardiner's two versions. I have owned the second Gardiner recording along with those lead by Christophers, Cleobury and Preston and none exceeds the singing and musical performance of this one.

His "Messiah" is every bit its counterpart and ranks ahead of other versions I've owned in recent years including the beautifully sung but controversial recording of Marriner, Academy & Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields with Elly Ameling, Anna Reynolds, Philip Langridge, Gwynne Howell; the energetic period performance on DG with Pinnock leading the English Concert & Choir, Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook & John Tomlinson; and the noisy old version by Beecham that big band lovers still cling to.

Parrott's recordings include some of the best early music singers in Europe including the clarion voice of Emma Kirkby, Nancy Argenta, tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson and bass David Thomas. The inclusion of parts for countertenor James Bowman to sing bass arias in "Messiah" is more controversial but does little to diminish the positive overall effect.

What I enjoy most about these performances is that, even though they are period performances, Parrott romanticizes the music and allows his singers to use vibrato. A complete absence of rapid fire speeds in the two performances allows the music to bloom and breathe. Indeed, his "Hallelujah" chorus in "Messiah" in a massive performance more befitting the old days of 200 member choirs than the lean and mean approach by most pedantics!

Parrott's approach remians authentic by including the original score of "Israel in Egypt" including the first part "Lamentation of the Isrealties for the Death of Joseph". Listeners that, like me, do not particularly care for this section can skip ahead to track 14 of disk 3 and begin at the more conventional "Exodus" section. In either case the performance is a stunning winner.

It's not often I come across a CD where I don't find something objectionable but this set is about as good as it gets. The performances both rank in the top drawer of currently available CDs. While the recordings, made in 1989 and 1990, are not the quality of today's best digital remakes and may take a little treble taming at the beginning of "Isreal: Exodus", they are more than adequate.

The one noticeable downside is the lack of a vocal score and only skimpy notes given in a couple languages. Complete track listings are included, however, and the English is so good throughout this set that you won't need the score to understand what's going on, whether you're listening to it at home, at work or in the car.

With extremely lucid direction by Parrott and the engineers, matched with some of the best singing I've heard in these scores, this is a set you can listen to repeatedly. I can't imagine another set that is better than this one, especially for $17 or less.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money!.......2007-08-01

The CD arrived in the timely manner promised and in great condition.
I would highly recommend "A Girl Like Me" to Emma(baby spice)Bunton fans.
I enjoy listening to her sing.

4 out of 5 stars Emma is cute and can sing.......2007-03-09

Emma can sing. That's good. This is her first album. The second one is good too. I look forward to her third, currently only available as an import. They're not all hits, but they are catchy. Nothing annoying. At least half that I could see on a mix CD. (sorry I don't do mp3)

2 out of 5 stars not disappointed!.......2006-09-28

i had already read a lot of good reviews on emma bunton's "a girl like me" before i bought it and i have to say i was not disappointed. my favourites are what took you so long, what i am, sunshine on a rainy day, we're not gonna sleep tonight, a girl like me and take my breath away. this album's much better than her second, free me, and i recommend you get this album immediately!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent debut CD from Emma!.......2006-05-11

Emma Bunton's "A Girl Like Me" is a wonderful debut. It is filled with pop hooks and superb vocals. The first track, "What Took You So Long?" sets the mood for the entire song collection; it is simply a great pop song. "High on Love" has a wonderfully sweet melody. I agree with the reviewer who loves "Sunshine on a Rainy Day"--it is the best track on the CD. This was a great start; she followed this up with 2005's "Free Me," which I believe is the best solo Spice release yet.

5 out of 5 stars Takes my breath completely away.......2006-04-26

Emma Bunton shows why she's not an average Spice Girl in this debut album. True, the lyrics are a bit naive, and she's not as strong vocally as she would later be on the truly amazing "Free Me", but there are some songs here that are beyond extraordinary, which more than makes up for the forgettable ones.

1. What Took You So Long
10/10
This was a very good song for the first single. Upbeat, very catchy with a beautiful video, I would have picked this as one of the top songs of the early 2000's. It was perfectly done, and should have been a much bigger hit than it was.

2. Take My Breath Away
11/10
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever hear. I've yet to meet a person who does not fall in love with this song after one listen, and I agree. It's perfect for Emma. She's always been known as sweet, and this song is wonderfully sweet without being saccharine. If you can only hear one song from this album, hear this one.

3. A World Without You
9/10
At first I didn't like this song, and it goes on a tad bit longer than it should, but it grew on me quickly and is now one of my favourites. The lyrics are well-done and the feeling of the song never gets mixed up with anything else.

4. High On Love
10/10
Wonderful, and it's so sweet that it's dedicated to her mother.

5. A Girl Like Me
10/10
And this is where the coy Emma Bunton comes into play, something she's also known for. This song shocked people when it first came out, more for who was singing it than anything else, but anyone who know a little of Emma knows how mischievious she's said to be.

6. Spell It O.U.T.
10/10
My sister hates pop music, and even she loves this song. It has a less pop-y feel to it than some of the others and is extremely infectious. Just looking at the title got it stuck in my head. It's a really great, great song, another stand-out.

7. Sunshine On A Rainy Day
Infinity/10
My personal favourite, though that probably won't be echoed by everyone. I can't describe how much I love this song; it's basically my theme song. I absolutely adore it and always have. The gospel-y feel really adds a lot of dimension to this song, and the album would have a lot less depth without it. The message is wonderful and Emma's beautiful voice fits it all to a tee. Definitely listen to this song.

8. Been There, Done That
8/10
Emma really loved this song, but I think it's one of the more forgettable songs on the album. You may like it, you may not. It's filler, but it's cute of course, so it's worth a listen.

9. Better Be Careful
7/10
Ditto everything about "Been There, Done That", only not as much.

10. We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight
5/10
My least favourite song on this album. It just isn't as catchy as the rest, and the message is a little odd. It's trying a bit too hard and loses its flow in the end, but a lot of people love this song so I'll leave it up to you.

11. She Was A Friend Of Mine
10/10
Another song I really love, even if it is a bit naive. Cute, fun, a bit more sexy than what we're used to from Miss Bunton. It's a bit more mainstream pseudo-pop, and one you'll either adore or hate. I, for one, adore it.

12. What I Am
11/10
This song has the best music video I have ever seen. Seriously. And the song itself is adoreable. Her voice fits perfectly with the synth-pop and the lyrics are to-die-for. One of the best songs she's ever sung.

The album itself, I would give a 9/10. You should definitely buy this album, especially if you're a Spice Girls fan, or a fan of pop music in general. It's a wonderful album. If you're looking for a more mature sound, look at her sophomore album, Free Me, which is one of the best CDs I have ever heard, period.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2007-03-10

Emma Shapplin no doubt has a beautiful voice, but here's the "but". Her stab at combining pop and opera just doesn't cut it. I don't know if it's because her music selections were poor, I am no expert, I just am a HUGE fan of the pop/operatic genre. Her voice and the songs didn't really come together with that powerful dynamic combo that sends chills down the spine. I suggest Sarah Brightman who has pretty much dominated this genre, and also a less well known artist that I love named Laura Turner. I am always searching for new or obscure artists that perform in this category, and when I did discover Emma, I was disappointed. She was anticlimatic from what I was already listenning to. Try these artists instead and don't waste your money on Shapplin.

5 out of 5 stars good buy.......2007-01-18

her voice is a delight and the whole cd was a most pleasurable experience.

5 out of 5 stars All I can say..........2006-05-05

...is that this album is an exceptional work of art. Unlike even the original pop albums of my favorite male singer, Andrea Bocelli, Emma Shapplin's music tends to take a more 'mysterious' and more seriously original direction (not to say Bocelli is bad at all). Her voice is amazing, and fits perfectly into each song. My favorites so far from this album are 'Spente le Stelle' and 'Discovering Yourself,' one of three 'Movie and Radio Songs' thrown in for 'Carmine Meo's' 1999 re-issue but the whole disc is worth even one listen. Also recommended: 'Etterna' and 'Atylantos' (the true sequel to 'Carmine Meo,' available on the Amazon France website).

3 out of 5 stars Emma is NO Sarah!.......2005-09-14

Emma has an OK voice but it clearly needs to be polished up a bit before anyone can compare her to a true artist like Sarah Brightman. You people need to get your ears checked!
"Spente Le Stelle," in its club incarnation, is an amazing work of dance music art, which forgives Emma's untrained voice. It is truly a classic dance remix. That said, I look forward to her future efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Needs work.......2005-05-04

I have to say that I purchased this CD with the hopes of its being as great as the club mixes of Spente le Stelle I've heard. Emma, no doubt on her way to being one of the best pop sopranos, is still in need of polishing that powerful instrument she has. There are many segments in several of the songs that if you have an ear for pitch, just make you cringe. Even though the arrangements are wonderful, including the male Gregorian chant and the sweeping melodies that seem to take flight on their own, the CD could have waited for the right voice to give it the height it deserved. If we're lucky it will be remade and made even more a success.
