Yagi Michiyo is renowned for her boundary-blurring use of the traditional koto, which when played conventionally can sound rich like a harp or folksy like a small, plucked lute. But the 13-string zither hasn't seen anything like Yagi Michiyo's attack, at least not on record. There's Elizabeth Falconer's Isshin Emerging, a collection of 20th-century koto works, and certainly other pioneers on the instrument out there. But Michiyo has an attack that would startle any listener, even when she's playing gently, as on "Remembrance," where the melody is carried by descending phrases, resonance, and bent strings. Her full range of execution becomes more apparent on the title piece, which is a thick rush of strums and picks whose twang can barely gather together with all the furious motion over the strings. If Asian zither or solo string music is your forte, this is something to spin when fresh attack and intensity are most necessary. --Andrew Bartlett

      5 out of 5 stars Koto Brilliance.......2006-02-19

This is very lyrical and passionate playing of the traditional Japanese intrument, but It's not traditional playing and she is obviously exploring the instrument and looking for ways to expound it's unique resonance. One look at the cover photo suggests to me that she has just finished playing a set and is exhausted from putting so much feeling into her playing. And another ***** to TZADIK for revealing this great music to a western listener!

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing Koto.......2004-03-28

In any language, the koto makes beautiful music. This is koto like no other-certainly not traditional, but altogether accessible. Her music isn't background, but deserves attention. Perhaps most amazing about her is the variety of sound she extracts from the koto; one wouldn't expect such a variety of sounds from a single instrument, especially if you're used to traditional koto music. Get this one if you like beautiful adventures in music.

5 out of 5 stars Twelve Kingdoms: Piano Memories.......2006-12-16

"Piano Memories" is one of several CD's containing music from or inspired by the remarkable anime fantasy series "Twelve Kingdoms." The hauntingly beautiful music for that series was composed by Kunihiko Ryo, and he is the composer and performer of the pieces on "Piano Memories." If you've seen any of the series (available on DVD), you'll know how strikingly lovely the music is. "Piano Memories" contains ten pieces; though some don't even remotely seem evocative of the "Twelve Kingdoms" score, they flow together with one another perfectly, and each is wonderful. This is one of those CD's that's a delight on first encounter and becomes more treasured with every replay. The talented Kunihiko Ryo stands up there with Laura Sullivan, Ann Sweeten, George Winston, and our other brilliant New Age keyboard masters. I also highly recommend "Twelve Kingdoms: Memories," which contains ten more pieces by Kunihiko Ryo. Neither of the two CD's is strictly a series soundtrack (what I'd hoped for on ordering the music), but between the two CD's, some of the actual score and all of the feeling of the series' music is presented, and augmented, and this is even better.
