5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous voice, beautiful record.......2007-07-09

What a wonderful album! The songs are superb, and Nancy's voice is as good as it gets here. Her ability to express the lyric, and set a mood is top notch. The title song is pure bliss-a Broadway style, soaring show-stopper that has a heartfelt lyric and near-perfect vocal. I'm a big fan of Nancy's emotional, tender approach, and the control she uses over that big voice, making it sweet and small in all the right places. My great regret is that I never got to see her perform live. During her busy years, 1985-94 I myself was a full-time working singer (professional name Lynn Randall), and I was in Atlantic City at the same time as she was several times-singing 6 days a week left no time to catch her act-what a shame for me. I sing "Listen To My Heart" myself, and tell Nancy's story when I do.

5 out of 5 stars 'Listen To My Heart; and 'What's Good About Goodbye'.......2007-05-06

If you have not heard the voice of Nancy LaMott, you really must treat yourself to one of her six CDs. She died in 1995 at the age of 43 and for a number of years her recordings were out of print and were not available.. However, there is a dealer in California who is a genius at finding really hard to find music and he managed to get five of her CDs and one tape for me . Since at last they are available (thanks to years of effort by those who worked with her)I was able to get the one I had on tape and 'Listen To My Heart' for a friend.
Her story is not as sad as it sounds as she accomplished more toward her life long dream in those 43 years than you could imagine. Go on line and read about her amazing life. And then buy some of her music and know how good life can be.

4 out of 5 stars one great, others good.......2006-11-10

One great song, some other pretty good songs. Who knows what she might have done had she not died just as she was breaking out??

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2006-11-10

nancy lamott had the voice of an angel which is captured so beautifully in this cd- the entire cd is magnificent- listen to my heart, the title track,is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and nancy does it more than justice- i simply love this cd and play it all the time

5 out of 5 stars Discovering Nancy.......2006-03-26

Today Nancy LaMott was a passenger in my car singing to me as I drove on the New York parkways for an hour. A delightful way via this CD to really "listen to her heart" as it touched mine. Very few of us who love pop songs of yesterday knew Nancy. I discovered her from the broadcasts of Jonathan Schwartz, who played her records often on his weekend radio shows. He claims, and I agree, that she is one of the very best songstresses of the 20th Century. What a pity she died so tragically (but heroically) while yet so young.

5 out of 5 stars The right singer for the right music.......2002-12-21

I love music like this that straddles the border between classical and pop or jazz. I had never heard of Valerie Errante before, but she has a perfect voice both for the more classical pieces at the beginning of the CD and the jazzier pieces at the end. She is one of those rare singers (Dawn Upshaw is another) who seems equally comfortable with both styles. If you don't already own a recording of "Blackberry Winter," it's one of those rare songs which can genuinely be said to be worth the price of the entire CD. Wilder reminds me in some ways of another composer who deserves a wider hearing--Ricky Ian Gordon. Hopefully this CD will help bring this composer the attention he deserves.

Wonderful voice makes this a fun CD to listen to on any occaision. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2003-04-15

Laurie's amazing talent truly shines thru on this albumn. Although hard to find it is well worth it. You can't help but get goosebumps when you listen to the albumn. It's also great to have a recording of her "I Dreamed A Dream" and her "Memory" is probably the closest recording to her live version, you can truly feel the heavens open up when she sings "Touch me...". I fell in love with this albumn the first time I heard it and I know that you will too. My favorites include the title song and "I'll Be Here With You". This albumn is a true testiment to a wonderful person and an amazing talent.

This collection of American songs spanning 150 years shows Deborah Voigt, one of the world's leading sopranos, in a new light. She successfully achieves the transition from the larger-than-life operatic stage to the intimate world of song, especially in the more outgoing, dramatic pieces. Voigt enters into each composer's style with complete empathy. Charles Ives was an irrepressible maverick and a stylistic chameleon. Voigt captures the songs' hymn-like simplicity and irreverent rambunctiousness, though her voice is a bit too heavy for them. Leonard Bernstein's jazzy irony also needs more lightness, but the slow love songs are done beautifully. Voigt really comes into her own in Charles Griffes's lush impressionism, evoking the sultriness of Cleopatra and the rhythms of a Spanish dance, and Amy Beach's unabashed effusive romanticism. Composer Ben Moore is a child of our own time, born in 1960. He moves between many styles with natural ease. Set to great English and American poetry, some of his songs were written for Voigt, and she sings them to perfection. The splendid pianist Brian Zeger provides both leadership and support. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mixed results.......2006-02-22

This is an interesting collection of American songs, but I don't feel that Ms Voigt sold these selections to me. She still sounds like an opera singer trying to squeeze a very powerful and large voice into smaller setting for these songs, with mixed success. She is much, much better than many of her fellow sopranos that tried such repertoire, but I feel that she only gets it right in Amy Beach and Griffes songs. And even there, she does not have a sound that would make every song recital fan happy.
And what's with the title of this album? I think she is a classy artist and deserves better than such silly title, her label probably came up with that.
Nice try overall, but I hope Ms Voigt will do more Strauss and Wagner from now on, not more songs like these.

2 out of 5 stars Like driving a Ferrari in a school zone........2006-02-02

Like a lot of big operatic voices, Voigt is hard to capture on CD; her recordings of Wagner and Strauss excerpts are good, but they can't convey the experience of hearing her live in an opera house. And singing with only piano accompaniment, as here, she simply can't use most of the power in her voice. As sensitive as her performances are I can't help feeling that she's having to hold back. For American song sung with more delicacy and grace I would suggest Barbara Bonney or Dawn Upshaw (I can't agree with previous reviewers' suggestion of Cheryl Studer's Barber, though Hampson is wonderful on that set).

4 out of 5 stars Stellar Soprano Applies Her Considerable Talent to a Lightning-Quick, All-American Repertoire.......2005-11-08

It's a shame that soprano Deborah Voigt hit her greatest notoriety last year for being fired by the Royal Opera House for being too fat for the title role of "Ariadne aux Naxos" by Richard Strauss. She subsequently lost eighty pounds but luckily none of her vocal prowess as can be heard to great effect on this intriguing collection of American songs, 25 in all and averaging a little over two minutes each. It would have seemed like a mismatch to apply her powerful voice - famous for her big Wagnerian roles - to sometimes delicate tunes. Voigt, however, confounds expectations with a surprisingly nuanced performance that showcases her interpretative skills on a diverse set of musical styles.

Similar to what countertenor David Daniels did with his 2003 disc with guitarist Craig Ogden, "A Quiet Thing", Voigt and pianist Brian Zeger have created a wide-ranging lyrical repertoire that encompasses significant vocal demands while remaining intimate in setting. In fact, both Daniels and Voigt cover Leonard Bernstein's anti-war lullaby, "So Pretty", with haunting aplomb. She also manages to dance effectively over the "Da-ga-da-ga-dums" of Bernstein's challenging "Piccola serenata". Voigt does wonders with the opening Charles Ives selections by not overplaying the innate sentiment of the tunes, in particular, soaring with the highly dramatic "The Children's Hour" by Longfellow and even covering the churchy warhorse, "At the River", with conviction.

There are eight highly individualistic songs by Ben Moore that stretch Voigt with bountiful results. The standouts of the Moore set are the English sea chantey-like "The Ivy-Wife" by Thomas Hardy, the lushly romantic "I Am in Need of Music" by Elizabeth Bishop; the sweeping "Darkling, I Listen" by John Keats; and the discordant waltz, "Bright Cap and Streamers", by James Joyce. For me, the highpoints of the recording are the last two sets by Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Amy Beach, both of whom tap impressively into Voigt's natural theatricality proven especially by her performances of Griffes's lush "Cleopatra to the Asp" and Bishop's rolling "I Send My Heart Up to Thee".

The one shortcoming of the recording overall is that the briefness of the songs does not really capitalize on Voigt's impressive dramatic capabilities in showcasing changes in characters she would have been allowed in her opera roles. For all the limitations it represents, this is a genuine recital album, and truly transcendent moments are fleeting at best especially given the variety of moods that need to be expressed in lightning-flash strokes. However, taken for the genre it represents, this is a stellar recording to appreciate a singer who is able to do more than Wagner and lose weight.

1 out of 5 stars May have a heart but what good is it if the artistic results are a void?.......2005-10-31

The header says it all. Thumbs down all the way. Get instead the Samuel Barber double set with Cheryl Studer and Thomas Hampson if you wish to experience true heartrending Americana. As another reviewer put it, you get no gimmicks and no camp from these two distinguished artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great new context for Voigt.......2005-09-30

It is great to hear Voigt in an American lieder recital. She is a top vocalist in her vocal prime. I think this is a lovely disc, and it really takes off especially with the songs of Ben Moore who has written many works just for Voigt. She tones down the volume of her sound and reins in the dramatic aspect of her soprano to give these songs a proper context and remains in service of them throughout the recital. Give this one a try! EMI - Release her Marshallin from Der Rosenkavalier, I think it would be wonderful. I know she just took on that role this summer.

The composers Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu might not be the names that first spring to mind when love songs are mentioned, yet this fascinating collection gives us a taste of what delights we have been missing. They range from seven Moravian folk songs, collected by Janácek at the turn of the century, to songs written by Martinu in the U.S. in 1942. There's also early Martinu--including songs he collected in Slovakia in 1920--plus the world-premiere recording of Songs for a Friend of My Country, a cycle he wrote in France in 1940 on his way to America. All of these songs are of interest in giving us another aspect of each composer's work; most have much more to offer. Many are achingly lovely, especially those by Dvorák--including his Op. 2, a reworking of four songs from a cycle he had written almost 20 years earlier, and Love Songs, a revision of eight songs from the same cycle. "Good night, my darling," from his 1886 cycle In Folk Tone, is worth the price of this CD alone. Czech mezzo Magdalena Kozená, who put together the program, sings with pure, attractive tone. Graham Johnson is her excellent accompanist. --Richard Fawkes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars On the Subject of Intelligent and Sensitive Recitals.......2005-05-19

Combing the recorded literature to find CDs that showcase singers who not only own brilliant vocal gifts but who also possess the intelligence to program recordings of lesser known works in a sequence that makes for intelligent recitals, it is becoming more obvious that there are many singers who opt for purity of purpose rather than 'salesmanship' of careers in the PR arena. Magdalena Kozená is one of these gifted singers whose intelligence and sensitivity match her physical and vocal beauty.

LOVE SONGS is a tastefully selected panorama of lesser-known songs by Kozená's fellow countrymen (Czech) Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu. And while many of the Dvorák and Janácek songs have been occasionally heard in recitals, the Martinu "Songs for a Friend of My Country", an exquisitely beautiful work written in 1940, here receives its World Premiere recording. Kozená's voice is in prime condition for these songs and she is ably accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson. The special flavor of these Slavic emotions and songs has rarely been so well captured.

But over and above the beauty of Kozená's performance of these neglected masterpieces shines the glow of her sensitive programming. Recordings such as these are rare and should be included in the libraries of those who appreciate the lieder genre. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2004-03-25

This is a beautifully performed selection of Czech lieder. Kozena has a lovely voice and sings with precision and nicely modulated emotion. The accompanying pianist, Graham Johnston, is excellent. Despite the title, not all these songs are love or romantic songs but all are well worth hearing. The selection of songs is excellent. Different listeners will prefer different songs. For me, the highlight of this recording are the rarely heard Martinu songs, many of which exhibit the lyrical aspect of his compositional style. Recommended strongly.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Disc.......2002-01-06

This is simply a magnificent recording. I like it better every time I put it on. The voice is fresh, supple, and expressive. I even find myself trying to learn some of the Czech words (from the translation in the booklet) they sound so nice. Both Kozena and the brilliant piano contributions by Graham Johnson are faithfully caught on the recording. There is enough variety and contrast that one doesn't tire in the least (over the generous 67 minutes of playing time) of hearing these playful, sometimes poignant, songs. One of the best discs, in terms of programming, performance, and sound quality, of the past couple of years.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning burst onto the world stage.......2001-12-17

Magdalena Kozena is suddenly known around the world, thanks to this stunning disc of 42 lieder from her Czech homeland. Most of the songs are short - some come in under a minute, the longest 3-4 minutes. Each is a little gem and many have never been recorded before.

Kozena's voice is sheer delight. She does have resonances in her voice which are reminiscent of her compatriot, Lucia Popp, but is certainly a mezzo - although she has chosen her repertoire well so we hear no strain at the top. Her low resonances are delightful and consistent with her head voice. To compare Kozena's voice to that of the late diva (Popp), it is more pure, more consistent in tone from top to bottom, and doesn't have so much of the `squeezey' quality which Popp used to great effect in evincing the passion of her characters. Kozena can empty her voice of vibrato or let it out rich and full, and uses all her vocal resources to great effect in contrasting the individual songs. She has astoundingly mature lieder-singer's technique for such a young singer.

This recording rightly won a Gramophone award this year. Kozena deserves all the accolades she receives for this - doubtless all listeners will develop their own favourites from these delightful miniatures.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful songs, and a singer with great potential.......2000-10-08

What a wonderful, carefully thought out CD! Kozena obviously revels in these rarely performed songs by Dvorak, Martinu, and Janacek, and Johnson accompanies with his usual ease and sensitivity. What a pity the piano is balanced distantly -- we hear little of Johnson's variety of touch and dynamics. As for Kozena, she is obviously an intelligent musician with a voice of great potential. It is qutie beautiful as it is, yet the colour is still rather pale. Yes, there is something of the late Lucia Popp's timbre, yet it has little of Popp's depth and range of colour. BBC Legends released a CD of Popp a year ago which includes three Dvorak songs also sung by Kozena. The differences are quite marked -- while Kozena's timbre and interpretation suggests a dreamy yet earnest youth, Popp brings out an autumnal glow and a sharp pain that pierces at least this listener's heart. Kozena has started a wonderful career. Only time will tell how her voice will develop. I do hope it goes in the direction of Popp's unique lyric timbre. No one could ever equal Popp (perhaps it's obvious by now that Popp is my favorite singer of all time), but perhaps Kozena will become something of Popp's heir, while still being her own person. I hope so. But her musicality is not in question. Let's keep our ears open!

1 out of 5 stars One track was enough for me!.......2007-07-18

This CD gets played fairly often on my Broadway Internet radio connection. The one track they play ad nauseum is: Help Is on the Way. After hearing this track probably more than 75(!) times, I have to say I am not interested in listening to the rest of this CD, or that particular track probably ever again! I even mute the sound when it comes on again. The singing is literally bombastically overblown and out of tune throughout. The piano accompaniment sounds tinny and echoy, apparently from the live venue in which it was recorded. No matter, the piano part gets nearly completely obliterated under the heavy, obnoxious, self-absorbed, individual voices which have so much distasteful vibrato it's unreal! I know it's cabaret-ish, and off-Broadway-ish, but I still expect quality for those genres! Blend is so important in choral singing, and when you're a so-so diva in a sea of other egotistical divas, it's very noticeable. The high soprano on "Help ..." (whoever she is) REALLY grates on my ears like a meat grinder, and the male performers are not much better, poking through the texture to get themselves out there in front of the other singers, no, I mean hackers! There is no dynamic contrast whatsoever, just loud, louder, loudest all the way to the end. I can't believe the audience raved at the end of that track! We must not be on the same planet as listeners! As for the song itself, nothing new or exciting there either. This type of songwriting has been overdone to the hilt (YAWN!). As an avid B'way and cabaret collector, I highly do NOT recommend this CD. You will probably be disappointed as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great music sung by a great cast .......2005-03-11

I have been playing this cd non stop for the past few days. I was fortunate to see the show before it closed, and I am grateful they recorded a cast album.

David Friedman's lyrics are heartwarming and inciteful. Any one who has ever listened to the late, great Nancy LaMott knows this; she gave life to so many of his songs.

Highlights for me on this cd include: I'm Not My Mother, If I Were Pretty, You're There, and I suppose so many more. The cast is wonderful with my two favorites being Alix Kory and Joe Cassidy. There are some great comedic songs along with heart tugging ballads. If you like David Friedman's music, you will love this cd.

And for those who don't know Nancy LaMott's work, run, don't walk to Amazon or any other place to order her cds. After an eight year legal battle, her cds are once again available to the public. She was one of the most natural singers, with a sincerity and vocal clarity and focus that was truly a gift from God. It's fortunate for us that before she died at 43, she left us with a legacy as she did.

This double cd is worth every penny. It includes pictures of the show and also the lyrics to the songs. A wonderfully produced cast album for any David Friedman fan.

Back in the mid to late 80's there was some really good music, that was circulating in the clubs that radio was not playing. This cd was one of them, even though most people remember Gerry Woo as a winner on Star Search, this cd proves he could hold his own on the dance floor. The remixes alone make it worth a listen. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of BoA's best albums.......2006-12-26

This is one of BoA's best albums yet. I like nearly every song in this album. It's fun, it's catchy, but it also has the mellow music if you're looking for something softer. My favorites from this CD are Listen to My Heart, Don't Start Now, Kimochi wa Tsutawaru, Dreams Come True, Amazing Kiss, and ID Peace B.

    4 out of 5 stars boa*chan fan ^_^.......2005-07-26

What can I say? This is an awesome album that BOA has done and I absolutely love it!! The tracks are as followed:

    1. Listen to My Heart-This is probably one of my favorite songs on this album because it has such a great energetic beat to it that makes you just wanna dance! The rhythm is very good and I've seen her music video for this song on her BOA Best of Soul and it's really good!! It's one of those songs that you won't get bored of even if you listen to it over and over again!

    2. Power-This song starts off weird with this weird dude singing (is he singing?)and although it's not a favorite song of mine, I still think it's great. BOA has a whole new attitude in this song than her other songs and that's what makes it good. The beat is catchy and overall, this song is something that you won't hear BOA sing everyday!!

    3. Every Heart-Minna no Kimochi-OMG!! This song is so beautiful!! It's kind of slow, but that's why I like it!! BOA's voice is so pretty in this song. Its tune and beat is just so well put in and in my opinion, it'll relax you! You can just space out with this song playing and like the first track; you can listen to it over and over again!

    4. Don't Start Now-I like how this song first starts; it's an energetic beat that'll make you want to listen further and further until the song is done. BOA's voice in this song is catchy and fast which is why I like it a lot. I highly recommend this song for you all because it's really good!

    5. Kimochiwa Tsutawaru-This song is soooo cool! The beginning is absolutely catchy and the lyrics are awesome!! The beat is really great in this one and it takes you further and further! I never get tired of listening to this song and her music video for this song is super!! The chorus gets your attention and keeps it too so I really think you should listen to this song.

    6. Share Your Heart (With Me)-Well, this song starts off kind of slow, but nonetheless has a good tune to it. I don't listen to it a lot, but when I do, it's very good. The lyrics are beautiful and BOA's voice is very good in this song.

    7. Dreams Come True-I love this song!! The beginning starts off on a weird kind of tone, but gets really energetic and it just makes you want to get up and dance! It'll keep you occupied for awhile and the beat goes from energetic to semi-calm and then back to energetic. I highly recommend you listen to this song!

    8. Amazing Kiss-A good song that I like to listen to and her music video for this is very good; if you buy BOA Best of Soul, watch this music video! The tune and beat will quickly grab your attention and BOA's voice sounds somewhat younger but I like it that way. Sometime through the song, it gets really energetic, and that's the part of the song that I really liked!

    9. Happiness-I don't really listen to this song a lot. It starts off slow and then gets really energetic and that's the part that I like! I'm not going to write a lot for this song because it's not exactly a favorite of mine, but nevertheless a good song to listen to!

    10. ID; PeaceB-you gotta love this song!! This is BOA's debut song on her first single and I absolutely love it!! The beginning is all funky which makes you want to listen to it over and over again. The tune will really charge you up to go and dance and speaking of dancing, her music video is very good for this song!! Anways...you'll love this song!

    11. Nobody But You-umm...I don't exactly listen to this song a whole lot, but it's good. BOA's voice in this song has attitude and that's what makes it good! Well, not much to say except to just listen and love it!

    12. Nothing's Gonna Change-Compared to all the other songs on this album, the beat and tone is a whole new thing. It has a kind of sad tone to it and that's why I like it so much. You can listen to it over and over again and you'll never get tired of it!
    13. Listen to My Heart (Hex Hector Main Mix: English Version)-Bonus Track-Oooh!! I love this song a whole lot because BOA starts off mysterious and cool!! Her English in this song is very good. It's soo catchy and you'll want to listen to it again and again and again!! The tune in my point of view is very good!! A definite good song!

    14. The Meaning of Peace-Another good song of BOA's. In fact, this is one of the first songs that I listened that BOA sang. I had no clue who she was and this song sort of introduced me to her! Kind of weird, but I really like this a lot and it has some bits and pieces of English lyrics in there which is really good!

So, I hope you enjoy this album because I really did! The running time of this album is 1:01:37 or 1 hour, 1 minute and 37 seconds. I don't know if this review was helpful or not, but I hope it was!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Strong!.......2004-12-19

BoA has a wondderful voice! It's strong and the words flow with a passion and she gives life to them. She can sing in more than one language as well and ,unlike some other artists, she sound great in all languages. Her meaning isn't lost in the translation.

My friend burned me some of the songs from this cd for me
    (1. Listen To My Heart, 3. Every Heart, 8.Amazing Kiss)and they were wonderful! So I checked around with some of my firends to see if any of them had this cd. I was lucky and one of my friends had the cd so I was able to burn it instead of paying 45$. This is a great cd and despite the costs, I would have bought this cd anyways if one of my friends hadn't burned it for me.

    5 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-04-09

this album has my two favorite BoA songs; Amazing kiss, which is is a fabulous upbeat pop song that i can't get enough of; and Every Heart, which as some of you may know is the second ending theme to InuYasha. also dreams come true is pretty good. BoA is quickly becoming my favorite artist. and since it's not listed here yet, the album includes:
    1.LISTEN TO MY HEART
    2.POWER
    3.Every Heart
    4.Don't start now
5.title was in kanji, possibly translates to "feelings are sent" I'm no good at this
    6.Share Your Heart (with me)
    7.Dreams come true
    8.Amazing Kiss
    9.happiness
    10.ID;Peace B
    11.Nobody But You
    12.Nothing's gonna change
13.LISTEN TO MY HEART (Hex Hector Remix) / Bonus Track
14.The Meaning of Peace / Bonus Track

    4 out of 5 stars A good collection.......2007-05-14

Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.

5 out of 5 stars A Musician of Great Dignity and Style.......2005-07-27

Sir Thomas Allen is one of the enduring baritones who has been able to move throughout the operatic repertoire and the recital stage with intelligence, informed characterization, and immaculate musicianship. To have a recording of some of the roles he has inhabited at this point in his career is a gift (this CD was recorded in 2003). To have the added challenge of retaining the stature of the roles while sung in English translations at the request of Chandos is a credit to his abilities and communicative powers.

English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!

For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05

5 out of 5 stars Passed the "Opera in English" test with flying colors........2005-07-04

For me, the test here was Figaro's Cavatina, from Rossini's Barber of Seville - sung in English, as is this entire compilation of 14 operatic favorites, sung by baritone Sir Thomas Allen. Could he pull it off? Could Chandos pull it off? The answer is an unequivocal, unqualified yes! The secret in singing classics in English, that were written and scored in another language, is in three things: pacing, vocal agility and appreciation for "fit", and what greater test for tongue and timing than Figaro? When you listen to this one song, you will understand why Chandos and its benefactor, Sir Peter Moores have such a passion for their Opera in English series. Sir Allen's voice is a matured unmistakably settled baritone voice that contains a lifetime's worth of understanding of the music and words he imparts through his magnificent delivery. For example, when he sings, Tchaikovsky's "You have my love and devotion" from The Queen of Spades, he delivers a smooth and deeply emotional rendition that lacks nothing in translation. Wagner's "Turning my gaze upon this proud assembly", from Tannhäuser is another example of how fine, full orchestration behind a seasoned voice that waxes eloquent with every phrase, can create a mood of relaxed familiarity with word and music, that may be lacking when sung in another tongue. Great Operatic Arias, serves up a smorgasbord of tunes that are familiar, made more so by the care and attention given to creating a place for the Opera in English series in every home library. The mood here is romantic, relaxed and with few exceptions consistent throughout. If you haven't heard Opera in English, this might be a good way to start, given the fact that the listener gets to sample how different composers might sound in other than German, Italian or French. You might be surprised to discover that when done with care, as is obviously the case here, the sound is about as good as it gets. As an added bonus, the booklet that comes with the CD is full of pictures, libretto in English, and biography that gives us a good insight into history of the singer and his identifying rolls.
