Fresh from their box-office triumphs on Close Encounters and the initial Star Wars chapters, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas used their combined studio clout to foster what must have seemed a long shot to some: a revival of the long-moribund action-adventure movie serials of their youth. The resulting exploits of Indiana Jones added another billion dollars or so to their coffers--and offered yet another opportunity for scoring legend John Williams to exercise his preternatural abilities to both inform the films with a nigh-perfect musical sensibility and play to the grandstands with rousing aplomb; "The Raiders March" quickly became one of cinema's most recognizable and enduring melodies. The three generous suites here (performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic under the baton of Nic Raine) re-create Williams's music with faithful energy, from the brass flourishes and Biblical mysteries of the first installment to the bright exuberance of Temple of Doom and the playful recapitulation of The Last Crusade. This 73-plus-minute collection also includes a bonus vocal performance of one of Temple of Doom's key motifs, Cole Porter's "Anything Goes." --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Good Try.......2007-06-10

This soundtrack was a good try because this is not the London Symphony Orchestra with John Williams conducting.
They have a little to much energy on the Raiders March (if you own the original soundtrack you'll know what I mean)
Still not bad.

4 out of 5 stars Actually pretty good. .......2006-04-30

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" I believe is one one of John Williams best scores. Unfortunately, it has been out of print for some time. This album contains excerpts from all three of the Indiana Jones films. They are not the original recordings but this is a good effort and actually is quite an enjoyable listen. I have gotten alot of enjoyment from this CD. If you enjoy the compositions of John Williams or are a fan of Indiana Jones as I am , I would recommend this very much.

1 out of 5 stars No John Williams mean STUPID MUSIC! .......2005-11-02

There is no way one can honestly call this Indiana Jones music with a clear conscience. The chords are off, and some of the songs are even missing NOTES! They slur when they aren't supposed to, they're giving John Williams THE GREAT a bad name! Indiana Jones movies are best ever in the entire world, and this "soundtrack" or "recording" or WHATEVER it's SUPPOSED TO BE, is dragging them through the mud! Horrible.

3 out of 5 stars Not a soundtrack!.......2005-08-04

Come on, Amazon, you list this under "Soundtracks" when it clearly is but a later rerecording of the original score. A rerecordings is not a sountrack! The average customer would think something you list inder "Soundtracks" would in fact be a soundtrack and would find out it actually is but a rerecording of the score only by going over the details of these reviews. It might be great music, but a rerecording is not a soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Well done of the Prague Philh. Orch.!.......2005-04-02

Since there is no album from John Williams himself who brings these great soundtracks of these 3 fantastic movies together, you may say that one is well done!
OK, it's not the Boston Pops Orchestra or the London Symphonic Orchestra, and OK, it's not the master himself who is conducting.
But Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do it very well! They have kept the spirit of the director and the soundtrack-composer. One little detail: the brass-section overdoes sometimes the rest of the instruments...
Conclusion: a must have CD, and the price is OK!

2 out of 5 stars Decent interpretation marred by terrible intonation.......2007-04-06

I had great difficulty restraining myself from turning this off when listening to it for the first time, because London does such a terrible job of being anywhere near in tune for much of it. Combined with many missed notes in the brass, messy passagework in the strings, and woodwind playing that seems intent on doing anything BUT creating any sort of phrase, it's doubtful this is worth even the small price Amazon has it listed for.

For a budget recording of this that's actually decent, I'd be much more inclined to buy Naxos' release of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine's version under Andrew Mogrelia.

5 out of 5 stars excellent choice for Romeo & Juliet.......2006-04-14

I am writing mainly in response to Sarman (Sweden). I own the fforte edition and have played this many years on several systems. On Onkyo DR-UN7 dvd receiver driving Epos 22's, the sound is excellent, as it was using Panasonic dvd player, NAD amplifier, and Epos 11's. Previn is one of best interpreters of Prokofiev--after all, he is a Russian born in Berlin. I don't know who could call either the playing or the re-mastering "dull". The natural alternative is Gergiev, re-issued on Philips great 50 recordings at medium price. That is also quite good. I would avoid the others.

5 out of 5 stars Proto Thrash - NWOBHM Shredders ! .......2006-12-29

The mighty Chateaux released 1 single and three LPs on the Ebony record label in the 1980's. The Band's only single and first LP Chained and Desperate featured soon to be well known Grim Reaper vocalist Steve Grimmet. There is speculation that Mr. Grimmet handled vocal duties on the band's Outstanding follow-up Fire Power. Mr. Grimmet has never confirmed or denied in any interview or periodical that I have read that he did in fact handle these duties. However one can speculate from the vocals themselves that Mr. Grimmet may have been the guy. One last note - the guitar work is outstanding. Tim Broughton smokes on all three efforts. I would love to hear other work by this man.

This compilation has every recorded song by Chateaux included in the collection. There is one single and three LP's worth of material. The material itself in simply outstanding at spots. This is well worth the money and well done. The information booklet is solid and gives decent band information. Five Star quality CD with every song by the band nicely done.

The breakdown of the material is as follows.

Tracks 1-10 are Chained and Desperate (4/5 stars) tracks with Steve Grimmet handling vocal duties. The standout tracks are the brilliant Chained and Desperate, Fight to the Last, Son of Seattle and Shine on Forever.

Tracks 11-18 are from the simply Killer Classic LP FIRE POWER (5/5 stars). This album was a change of direction for the band. They went to a straight ahead in your face proto-thrash sound. Two of the Tracks on this LP are simply must have for any metal fan. Run in The Night and White Steel are top notch NWOBHM shredding at it's penultimate best. Other strong tracks off this Classic are Eyes of Stone, Street Angel and V8 crash. There is no filler on this LP and this ranks as one of my absolute favorite works from the NWOBHM.

Tracks 19-27 are from Chateaux's third and final LP Highly Strung (3/5 stars). Highly Strung is a solid opus of tunes and featured the Classic Kerrang Charting hit "Chase the Sun." This has been disputed with me in the past and I have the Kerrang issue-nuff said. This LP is solid but is similar in all areas and does not have as strong a song writing as the previous LP Fire Power. Strong tracks include the previously mentioned Chase The Sun, the instrumental Phalanx, First Strike and One too Many

Well worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-09-28

I discovered Chateaux totally by accident in 1984. I was looking for something new and cool. I picked up "Fire Power" at my local import store because of the cool cover and because they had a french name. Growing up in Sherbrooke (Quebec), if we saw a metal band with a french name, we'd check it out. I fell in love with the songs "Eyes of Stone", "White Steel" and "V8 Crash". The song "Run in the Night" has some awesome guitar screaming in the intro. How does this guy make his guitar scream like that is beyond me! I was never able to find any of the other Chateaux releases on LP and kinda forgot about the band with the years.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago... I was feeling nostalgic and did a search on Encyclopedia Metallium for Chateaux. Lo and behold, I found that they had this anthology out. Looked it up here on Amazon and found it right away. This double CD is awesome if you're a fan of heavy 80s metal (like Accept, Dio, etc..., not talking about Poison or LA Guns here!). I'm so glad to have finally heard all their other releases. Awesome band that should really have made it big but for some reason, never did.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2004-05-11

VERY nice, al lot better than OST1. The highlights of the CD are Kumikyouko Chi no Ryu, Crystal, and Requiem. A good CD if you are a fan of the show, but I would even reccomend it to people who haven't seen the show.

5 out of 5 stars This cd is great.......2004-02-29

I love this cd and I play it often. The music is simply amazing.
The first soundtrack had mostly "fighting" songs, whereas this one has calmer songs and more songs with lyrics. This cd also has songs that were not played during the anime series, such as 'Strength' and 'Crystal' (which is sung by Kamui's Japanese voice actor). Also, 'Suite (Dragons of Earth)' is on this cd and I like it more than 'Suite (Dragons of Heaven)' on the first soundtrack. With 'Suite (Dragons of Heaven)', I think it was a generalization of the characters, and did not play a melody for every seperate one of them. 'Suite (Dragons of Earth)' has a melody for each of the Seven Angels in an 8 minute song.
'Last Battle' is a great song which was only played once in the series, and not even in it's entirety. I find that very unfortunate, but it's another reason to buy this.
Last but not least, 'Crystal', sung by Kenichi Suzumura, is the final song on this soundtrack. I really wish that this song was played at the end of the series, however, since it ends with a sense of finality and is sung from Kamui's point of view. Oh, well. ^_^
What don't I like about this cd?
I don't really think they needed to put eX Dream and Secret Sorrow's TV edits on this cd. Not a big deal, though.
This is my favorite anime soundtrack that I own, and hopefully it will be yours, too!

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2003-11-07

Album Description

Actor and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the world's best musicians. He creates music with a unique style that combines western, classical, symphonic composition, Japanese traditional sounds and experimental electronic music. Out of print for many years until now, the soundtrack also contains a vocal performance by David Sylvian, best remembered as leader of the popular U.K. rock band Japan.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Forbidden Colours.......2004-10-19

My college roommate bought this when it was released. I have always loved the Forbidden Colours version with David Sylvian's vocals. A real gem of a song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-05-20

This is the soundtrack to the 1983 feature film "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence". Sakamoto, who was in the now-legendary New Wave/synth group Yellow Magic Orchestra, composed and performed the entire evocative score. Addtionally, Sakamoto starred as a Japanese POW camp commandant, along with British POW's Tom Conti and David Bowie (as an Australian commando). The movie, while a disappointment at the box office, is quite an experience; a strange drama set in a Japanese-run POW camp in the Dutch East Indies in World War II, but worth watching. The ending is emotional; you may shed a few tears at the end!

As good as the film is, the soundtrack is stunning, especially the title track; it's haunting, mesmorizing, and powerful. (The only clunker is the David Sylvian vocal on the "reprise" at the end, which was not on the film's soundtrack.)

At the very least, get this brilliant soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Sylvian / Sakamoto collaboration.......2003-09-03

This CD disappeared for some time, I remember hunting for years to find it again. This re-release gives fans of the movie and the two artists another chance to listen to a fine Sakamoto piece. Sakamoto was in Yellow Magic orchestra, Sylvian in Japan and then on his own. The collaboration with Sylvian is one of many: Bamboo Music/Bamboo Houses and Sylvian's first 3 solo albums -- all amazing when Sakamoto adds his unique keyboard touches. "Forbidden Colors" stands away from the rest of the album, I think, a wonderful song, one of my favorites.

Buy the movie, it's still available, enjoy Bowie against Sakamoto and Tom Conti's fine performance. Then, you'll need this album.

5 out of 5 stars This is still No.1 in my list of favorite music.......2003-08-12

I watched the movie for the first time when I was 21.

I listened to the entire soundtrack for the first time when I was 18.

I have known the melody of the title theme....since I was in elementary school.

I always whistled this melody without knowing what the music was called or who it was by.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence was the soundtrack of my life.

PS.
I have recently noticed the track #2 on disc #2 of the compilation Clicks & Cuts 3 (on Mille Plateaux), by Antonelli Electr., starts with a melody that is very remniscent of one of the short tracks on Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. It made me really excited...

4 out of 5 stars dynamic,powerful.......2005-07-10

2 words two decribe this i sould say another underrated dutiot montreal performence, though i give it 4 stars mostly because of the sound witch is pretty good but nothing like some of there other ones.the performence excels on every level its way better then alot of other versions and better than tilson thomos somewhat overrated version,i wish dutiot played the entire ballet, dont pass this one up espesially if you are a prokoviev fan like me,the final number is beutifully played and famous dance of the knights is awsome and tybalts death too the playing is amazing

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?
