Album Description

This first collaboration CD from acoustic guitarist Michael Mandrell and multi-instrumentalist Benjy Wertheimer is a mythic instrumental journey. I just heard portions from this CD on NPR's Echoes program on my way to work on a cold dreary Saturday morning and the music by these guys made my day - if you need something to lift your spirits, transport you to a place of peace and encourage you to appreciate the beauty around you, this is the prescription you need. Very highly recommended.

NOT a Tribute.......2002-10-19

This CD was a true disappointment. If you're a true Van fan, then this hill-billy version will not soothe the soul but will incense one's inner Irish - even if you're not Irish. This is not a tribute but an assault on his style and someone's way to make money on Van's coat tails. This CD is now with all the free AOL CD's I get in the mail . . . now does that sound like a tribute?

Brilliant.......2006-08-21

If you love Van Morrison's music, it will be impossible for you not to enjoy this CD.

Relax and enjoy.......2005-07-02

Being a hardcore Van's fan, I took it as a duty to buy this album. Not that I'm against this cross-over idea nor I dislike String Quartet music in general. Only when you like a musician so much, you're always a bit wary towards reinterpretation of his music. Of course many have covered Van's songs so far and some have done a pretty good job (Bobby McFerrin's Moondance being an apt example), but this is an altogether different affair. The result, if not extraordinary as one would hope, is highly listenable and consistent. It demonstrates that Van's forte is not only is other-worldy voice, but also all the other aspects of his music. When a song of any genre is "classically" treated, the result may be double-edged, embellish it on one side with clever orchestration but also ruthlessly reveal the compositional shortcomings. I'm therefore happy to note that Van's songs come out as good as possible after the "washing", at times attaining a true symphonic value and what is someway surprising is that the uptempo numbers work as good as the ballads which were easier targets and in some cases already included strings in the original arrangement. Good on whoever selected the tracks that managed to go a bit ahead of the first albums, including at least two tracks which are more recent and well-suited for teh project. Moondance (the album) gets the lion's share, personally I would have ravaged more Astral Weeks or Veedon Fleece, but I'm not complaining, I enjoyed the album pretty much and would recommend it to Van's lovers who also like instrumental music.

The singing is a high pitched screech and the music sounds like it was recorded on an 8 track in a garage. This is totally bogus!

This stuff is absolutely HILARIOUS!
Omg, where do I START?
First of all, it sounds like his drum machine is either 4,000 years old, or is built into one of those little casio keyboards that you buy at Costco. Seriously man, those are the WORST sounding FM drums I have heard since the first TIFFANY album in 1984.
I was originally intrigued by some of the atmospheres created by the 'horror' concepts until I read the lyrics. I will never forget how I just could not stop LAUGHING when I read the lyrics to 'Spider Inside the Closet':
Is he affraid of the dark?
Ha ha ha, we'll make him affraid
Is there a way out?
Ha ha ha, not in this closet
Should we let him go?
No! not in my lifetime

Not in my lifetime? This is supposed to be a horrifying conversation between the spider and the walls? NOT IN MY LIFETIME? I couldnt stop laughing. I thought I was going to piss myself.
As I read on, I found more and more examples of the incredible lyrical ineptitudes of Mr. Storm. His concepts are possibly interesting, but completely sophmoric. It is hard for me to assume his age due to his 'spooky' secret persona, but based on the quality of his lyrics I would have to say he is no more than a junior in high school.
The guitar work is fair, and lends itself to some of the better work of the genre. He is no slouch in terms of playing your basic predictable thrash riffs and he does have an affinity for playing disjunct solos that have some very interesting flavors to them. However, it is very hard to listen to on whole as it sounds as if the entire thing was recorded in his bedroom with an old 4 track tape recorder.
The vocals of Mr. Storm aren impossibly annoying. All of the melodies are sung in flasetto that gives the impression that he has not yet undergone puberty. The tiny 10 year olds voice makes it nearly impossible to discern any of the lyrics, and very much takes away from the attempt at atmosphere as opposed to embellishing it.
When I saw very badly designed rubber mask and the entire stage persona of Mr. Storm, I realized that this music would appeal to the same people that found something redeeming in the music and lyrics of early Venom. With ridiculous phrases and a pathetic attempt at being dark and scary, Mr. Storms music will appeal to thousands of the culturally retarded that would probably have thought that Freddy Vs. Jason was a good movie.
