Amazon.com essential recording

These excerpts from 1937 performances at Covent Garden have long been available in one form or another, but never in such impactful sound. No, it's not stereo and it still sports odd balances and thin string sound. But the voices come through clearly and it doesn't take much mental adjustment to become absorbed by performances of overwhelming power and intensity. The Flagstad-Melchior combination was untouchable in Wagner, and Furtwängler was perhaps the greatest of all Wagner conductors. All are captured here in their prime, galvanized by a live audience to deliver singing and conducting of unsurpassable beauty and understanding. No Wagnerian or lover of great singing can afford to miss this. --Dan Davis

4 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2003-09-01

This is a selection from a 1937 performance of the Ring. Furtwngler is my all time favorite conductor of Wagner and he lives up to his reputation. The singing is also excellent, only marred by old recording equipment that does not adequately capture the wonderful performance. Any Wagner lover will enjoy these CDs, despite the less than good reproduction of the 1937 sound (which is why I gave it only 4 stars).
Since writing this review a couple years ago, I must say that this is a CD that I listen to repeatedly. It has become one of my favorites in my Wagner collection.

5 out of 5 stars Flagstad's Brunnhilde at her best.......2002-02-28

You have never heard a more exciting performance of neither the third act of Walkure or of Gotterdammerung. I only wish there was a complete recording of those glorious days of Wagner music. Flagstad's Brunnhilde has always been the grandest in opera history, and these performances are no exception. Her tonal splendour, her power and magnetism has never been more evident on record than here. Her seasons in London in the 30's was probably even finer than those at the Met. Her partners there seemed to bring out the best in her. Furtwangler, Beecham, Reiner, Melchior, Janssen, Bockelmann. This with her stunning performance of Tristan und Isolde the same year with Beecham must be considered some of the very best singing she has done. The nobel performance of her Walkure's Brunnhilde, the emotional rollercoaster ride of Brunnhilde of Gotterdammerung is so expertly acted out in Flagstad's singing. Flagstad's magnificent performance somewhat overshadows her great partners. Rudolf Bockelmann's Wotan is nothing short of brilliant, along with Melchior's heroic Siegfried, Kerstin Thorborg's desperate Waltraute and Ludwig Weber's great evil Hagen. This is a performance to treasure for all Wagner fans who look for the greatest Wagner singing of the century. I would recommend this along with the excerpts of Frida Leider's Gotterdammerung performance the previous year with Beecham, Melchior, Thorborg and Janssen released by Preiser.

5 out of 5 stars Flagstad and Furtwaengler in the Ring.......1998-11-10

This is a stunning album. The sound is pretty good--for 1930s sound midway between the celebrated Beecham/Reiner Tristan and the Lehmann/Melchior/Walter Act I of Die Walkuere (which is as good as imaginable for that era). The singing, especially by Flagstad, is off-the-scale wonderful. One could claim that this is her very best Immolation Scene, and her great melodic line about 30 minutes before the end of Die Walkuere is spine-tingling. Bockelmann's Wotan is as good as the best, and Melchior is inimitably himself. The conducting is perhaps more tightly organized than in Furtwaengler's later versions. Beautiful little details in the orchestra pop out, even with the fair-to-middling sound.

If you are just starting out to explore Wagner's Ring, this is probably not the album to start with. Get one of the super recordings (either of the whole thing or separate operas), such as Solti or Karajan. Those provide a text. Then get the Bruno Walter Walkuere Act I--it's the best example of Wagner's ability to write a tightly knit hour of music and of theater--no wasted motion or notes--and there is no performance like that one. Then begin to explore marvellous byways such as the present album.

5 out of 5 stars Furtwaengler and Flagstad at La Scala.......2004-01-19

This is a live recording of Wilhelm Furtwaengler conducting at La Scala in the early 1950s. The house band is not up to the standards of Bayreuth or Berlin but serves well enough.

With one exception, the cast is serviceable -- and probably better than anything likely to be assembled today. The Siegfried, Max Lorenz, is adequate (no small praise) but not especially memorable. The exception, of course, is the great Kirsten Flagstad, who here sings wonderfully well.

The sound of the 1950s live mono recording is is about what you might expect. If mere reproduction is the most important thing for you, go elsewhere. If a brilliant conductor and a unique artist in one of her signature roles interests you, give this a try.

Furtwaengler and Flagstad = five stars.

2 out of 5 stars This "Götterdämmerung" is a mess........2001-02-10

I came to this recording with certain expectations, and none of them were met. (1) SOUND QUALITY: Given that this is an Opera D'Oro release of a live performance, I expected the sound quality to be less than optimal. (Some of their recordings are OK sound-wise, such as their "Don Carlo" from the Vienna State Opera.) But the sound here is mediocre at best, and in some places (like the first several seconds of the prelude), it is just plain awful. The sound quality of the 1951 Bayreuth "Parsifal" is better than this. I think I heard the prompter a few times, but I'm not sure. Plus the audience noise can be quite distracting at times; at least a couple of people in attendance had really nasty coughs. (2) SINGING: I love Ludwig Weber's Gurnemanz on the aforementioned "Parsifal," but I'm not sure he has the kind of bite necessary for Hagen. I had never heard Max Lorenz before, but his Siegfried is lazy and sloppy. Alois Pernerstorfer makes an interesting Alberich; he sounds more like a lyric baritone than the kind of sinister voice one would expect in this role, like Hermann Uhde or Ekkehard Wlaschiha. (3) ORCHESTRAL PLAYING: The playing is pretty sloppy, too, and this is not just a function of the sound quality. In La Scala's defense, the Bayreuth orchestra a year later didn't sound any better. (4) CONDUCTING: I don't quite get the fuss about Furtwängler being the greatest Wagner conductor ever. There's certainly no evidence of that in this recording. (Furtwängler fans, don't flame me. I'm not interested.) BOTTOM LINE: If you're only going to get one recording of this opera, spend three times as much and get the Levine, Karajan, Barenboim, or Solti. This is for historical interest only.

5 out of 5 stars They get better with every album..........2006-05-11

Die ?rzte are up there among my favorite bands. At first it was simply because they were performing in German and I enjoyed their sound more than other German bands (like Rammstein or Die Toten Hosen that seemed to take themselves too seriously), but the more I learn about them and the more of their music that I hear, the more I realize what a great band they are--regardless of what language they sing in. "Fun-Punk" really is the best way to describe their music. So often their lyrics are complete nonsense, but it's clear to see that they still love what they're doing--playing good, fun music. That's why they're still at it after 20+ years and especially since Rod took over as bassist, they just keep getting better and better.

Although Ger?usch has as many silly songs as ever (Pro-Zombie, Piercing, Der Tag, Unrockbar, etc.) Die ?rzte have been working in more politics over the years. Whether you speak German or not, the music to songs like "Deine Schuld" (my personal favorite) is bound to get you moving--and if you understand what they're saying, even better. All the greats put out a double album, and after all the years, Die ?rzte are a band to pull it off. I love all the songs on this cd. They're fun, upbeat and have a great sound. Plus, die ?rzte are just a great band worth supporting--they do it cuz they love it. They certainly make a nice return, but they're not in it for the profits. They avoid the burn-protection, trusting that if they put a good enough product out there, you'll want to buy it, and they don't seem too burnt out if you do burn it...It is a great cd and worth the purchase. (and if you get a chance to see the video for "Die kl?gsten M?nner der Welt," don't pass it up--awesome!)

I agree with the specifics of the previous viewer. In my opinion, in the recorded history Wagnerian performances the 30's and 40's were THE GREATEST.
Melchior- greatest heldentor who ever recorded.
    Thorborg- magnificent mezzo
Ebe Stgnani- listen to her Brangane
List, Schorr, Hoffman and Kipnis- peerless lower male voices.
Here is a buffet of great ladies-
Kirsten Flagstad, Helen Traubel, Marjorie Lawrence, Lotte Lehmann,
Florence Austral, Frieda Leider, Astrid Varnay, Dame Eva Turner and Florence Easton

The 50's 60's etc are poor stepchildren compared to these giants

5 out of 5 stars The greatest singers and a great conductor.......2005-08-23

Wagner performances don't get much better than this - unless it were a recording of the whole opera with the same forces. Many people in these columns talk about the golden days of Bayreuth in the 50s. Others even speak highly of more recent performances. But this line-up gets the mouth watering just at the thought of it - and it was available at Covent Garden, too. Those pre-war days were undoubtedly the time to be alive for a Wagnerian

Here you have the greatest of all Siegfrieds and Brunnhildes in Leider and Melchior - the oath-taking in Act 2 is just white hot. Add to that a superbly black Hagen in Emanuel List, Kerstin Thorborg's wonderfully sung and vivid story-telling as Waltraute as well as Herbert Janssen's movingly flawed and ultimately broken Gunther. As if that weren't enough, there's a real taste of Beecham conducting Wagner in an opera that suited him better than Tristan.

Unless you're not prepared to settle for less than modern stereo sound or you're a purist who insists on completeness, try this disc. It's wall-to-wall edge-of-the-seat stuff from beginning to end.
