5 out of 5 stars Remarkable and gorgeous.......2007-03-24

A celebratory triumph of a poet, songwriter, and performer who embodied a love of life, good company, melody, and the beauty of women and words. Bethania's voice is as remarkable as Vinicius's twin talents for poetry and the pleasures of love. This album somehow manages to out-ballad her great career of balladeering, AND have more energy and pleasure in the "up" sambas as well. Superb and varied arrangement throughout, among the best in modern MPB.

I could listen to Mulher, Sempre Mulher and Tarde em Itapua all afternoon. Actually, I have!

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful homage........2006-11-14

One of Brazil's greatest voices tackles the back catalogue of one of its greatest songwriters.

Maria Bethânia has carved out a distinctive place for herself amongst the pantheon of Brazilian greats of the last half century.
Her love for the dramatic, the theatrical and the unashamedly romantic has earned her a place in the hearts of a devoted fan-base and today, 40 years after her debut show in Rio set her on the path to stardom, she is still one of the biggest names in Brazilian music.

It is also 40 years since she first met the legendary poet, lyricist and co-founder of the bossa nova movement Vinícius de Moraes, an early supporter with whom she went on to forge an enduring friendship.
To celebrate this double anniversary, Bethânia has produced "Que Falta Você Me Faz" ( this is the original title of the album), a homage to Vinícius that draws on material from across his luminous career, including his near-mythical collaborations with Tom Jobim and Baden Powell.

Typically, Bethânia has sought out material with a dramatic edge. Her selections range from the smooth, confident samba of `Lamento no Morro' to the introspective `O Astronauta'. Her smoky, controlled delivery is complemented perfectly by an expansive musical setting based around sensitive arrangements of piano, guitar and percussion. Unfortunately, the glossy, overwrought strings that Bethânia too often relies upon to provide the emotional punch are also present on many of the tracks, needlessly distracting from the otherwise subtle performances.

"Que Falta..." is at its best on songs such as "Modinha" and the closing "Nature Boy" (with brother Caetano Veloso) when the backing is kept simple, allowing the quality of the songwriting and Bethânia's remarkable voice to shine.
At moments of undeniable beauty such as these, the set borders on perfection.

3 out of 5 stars Quite average.......2007-06-27

It's not a bad quality CD but the music is variable and different. Even though I like most types of music, I think the composition is just average.

5 out of 5 stars A world rhapsody.......2006-12-28

This is suberbly enhanced performance CD that captures Yo-Yo Ma and friends at their musical heights. The accompanying musicians, the Assasds, Paquito you-know-who, Kathyrn Stott and others add beautiful textures to the compositions of Piazzolla and Jobim to create a Latin influenced classical painting. This is music to play, go about your business at home and enjoy the different influences coming together. The sadness and happiness blend to reveal the emotions of life. Favorite songs include D'Rivera's "Afro" that sneaks up on you like breaking dawn to reveal the sunshine and life anew. Also Piazzolla's "Tango Suite" is a frenzied Yo-Yo Ma performance with suttle breaks on cello giving way to the Assadd's beautiful quite work on guitars to spike and peak your interest numerous times. This is good background music but it grabs your attention and makes you listen carefully so it can turn on you and be very demanding. Good for those quite times of work or reading.

5 out of 5 stars All that a performance can be........2006-02-11

Keep in mind that The studio version of this performance is nothing short of brilliant. The material includes pieces from the likes of Astor Piazzolla, Jobim and Paquito D'Rivera. Then you come to discover that there is a live concert version (and Dvd) of the disc. There is nothing like having your cake and your ice cream in the same bowl. Well that is what the release of this disc is, Cake and Ice cream with the cherry on the top.

Peace:

3 out of 5 stars Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05

I bought the disk after hearing about the colaboration on NPR. The songs and performances are impecable, the variety is satisfying and fun. My only complaint is that the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired. Several times the recording level is not balanced between the instruments so that when listening to YoYo Ma playing, when joined by the saxaphone, it comes in too loud and ruins the mood.

I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.

5 out of 5 stars a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22

Yo Yo Ma and his fellow musicians make beautiful music in this mellow adaptation of melodies that have their origin in Latin America.
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.

Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.

This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.
2. "Brasileirinho", by Waldir Azevedo, featuring Paquito D'Rivera, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
It also includes a very short interview with Yo Yo Ma.

A Brazilian expatriate living in Brooklyn, former rock star and hit songwriter Vinicius Cantuária recorded six records in his native land prior to teaming up with producer Arto Lindsay and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto for his first American album. Cantuária always claims that moving to New York actually made him become more Brazilian. Indeed, the deep and understated Sol na Cara ("The Sun on Your Face") consists mostly of subtle bossa nova melodies (often cowritten with Caetano Veloso, Sakamoto, and others) set to the undulating folk rhythms of northern Brazil. While Cantuária's lyrics, soft voice, and nylon-stringed acoustic-guitar playing signify unabashed romanticism (even when he's singing about his favorite soccer players), Sakamoto's atmospheric keyboards lend an air of almost otherworldly cosmopolitanism to a 1996 album that seems to have aged like a fine wine. --Richard Gehr

5 out of 5 stars another great release from Vinicius!.......2003-10-10

Great album! Different than "Vinicus" but almost equal in the quality of the material offered. Strong songs with hooks and pleasantries all over the place. Romantic - highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars His Best Release.......2002-08-15

I agree with the reviewer that said that this is Vinicius Cantuaria's best US release. I first really got into him with the Brasil 2Mil compilation piece (first track here) and it was togetherness ever since. I first picked up his latest realease, Vinicius, followed by Tocuma, and oddly, I found the quality better as I went back in time to his earlier releases until I picked this one up.

His sound is very dark and soulful, this is an acoustic album. His style tends to use sound effects in the background, but there is a charm to his style that makes him very easy to listen to. A smooth voice and a nice message. He is a poet. This particular release has the translations in the cover sheet which also is a nice touch to those that cannot speak portuguese. Good touch IMO.

I'd pick this one up - definitely before the later two. And if you like this, pick up some of Joao Gilberto's acoustic releases - namely Voz e Viola.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, happy, charming, wistful, modern.......2001-12-01

Like Joao Gilberto's or Antonio Carlos Jobim's godchild, Vinicius wooes us with neo-Bossa Nova sounds: sweet and sublime and so joyful and wistful.

His later material (Tucuma, for example) is more "neo", but these songs reflects the older bossa nova sweet cadence.

I especially liked Samba da Estrela, but all are great.

      5 out of 5 stars Salve O Vinicius..............2001-07-03

Although he has recorded MANY lps in Brasil this was the first US release cd from the New York based self described practicioner of Nova Bossa Nova, Vinicius Cantuaria. It is the absolute BEST of his 3 USA releases to date!(The other 2 are superb also) There is not a bad track on the entire cd, not ONE musical gesture wasted. Vinicius' vocals are in the "classis bossa style", but the arrangements are more "contemporary", Vinicius has progressed in his niche much as Tom Jobim continued to grow and expand HIS vocabulary.(Check out Urubu & Matita Pere to see what I mean). Subsequent Vinicius cds and his STRONG presence on a cd from percussionist Mauro Refosco show even more of the new cultural cannibalism , incorporating members of the New York new music underground, jazz "rebels" like Bill Frisell, and rock icons David Byrne & Laurie Anderson. AMAZON has provided listening of this cd, but PERSONALLY, I think they "missed" some of the cd's FINEST TRACKS! "Samba de Estrela" celebrates Vinicius' love for his favorite futebol club,(risos!!!!!), "O grande Lance......" is a BEAUTIFUL ballad, and Corre Campo is a glorious tribute to the Bumba-Meu -Boi. Thanks goodness the David Byrne , the English , and Japonese musics fans (among others) have shown such interest in the GREAT , almost forgotten Musicos Brasileiros,as Vinicius, Marcos Valle, Tom Ze, Itamar Assumpcao and of course, Victor Assis Brasil and HERMETO PASCOAL --I have been able to replace some old scratched lps , and NEW RECORDINGS from these musicians have been released thanks to the new interest in their artistry!... (O Itamar"s 2 cd set, "Bicho das Sete Cabecas" is a MUST for fans of Tom Ze or Arrigo!! All 3 Vinicius Cantuaria cds flow naturally from one to another, so I will implore you check out all 3 in this one review-- GOOD LISTENING!

5 out of 5 stars It is brazilian music at its best........1998-07-16

This is a complete treat to the ear, from the first to the last song--one of those rare CD's that you can buy not just for one or two songs. Some of the tracks are co-authored with Caetano Veloso and they are excellent samples of good bossa-nova. Cantuaria also introduced some popular themes that are delightful. The CD booklet includes translations that make English listeners to enjoy--though limited as it can be through a translation--the poetry of the original lyrics.

Brazilian star Vinicius Cantuária moved to New York in the '90s and has been keeping company with avant-popsters and jazzers such as Arto Lindsay and Bill Frisell, both present here. Tucumã is rivetingly beautiful from the first play, keeping its bossa nova rhythms light on their feet while sprinkling offbeat, Tusk-like touches through the mix. Even more than Cantuária's previous Sol na Cara, this is a keeper. --Rickey Wright

        Amazon.com

Bossa nova has a deceptively easy-on-the-ear feel. The harmonic twists and turns, the compact rhythmic variations, the tricky melodies all seem smoothed out by the whispering of the words, the soft touch. In moving beyond bossa nova, singer, guitarist, percussionist, and songwriter Vinicius Cantuária takes a similar strategy. Working with an impressive group of guests, including Laurie Anderson, Bill Frisell, Arto Lindsay, Sean Lennon, Nana Vasconcelos--the list is long--Cantuária offers music that reveals itself bit by bit, in the details. His opening "Amor Brasileiro," a bossa nova, includes a quirky guitar and a Milesian trumpet; "Maravilhar" suggests a sly tribute to Getz/Gilberto. Every piece has a peculiar twist, and the overall effect is at once familiar and fresh: the urgency of "Sanfona"; the slightly sinister, obsessive "Retirante"; the slightly off-kilter "Aviso do Navegante." The music is easy on the ear, all right, but you will want to take a closer listen--it is worthy. --Fernando Gonzalez

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Melancholic and more Traditional.......2004-10-08

Vinicius Cantuaria is an artist with a stunning resume. Born in Manaus, the style of his music tends to connect different states of Brazil with a sound that will paint a picture of nature in your mind. He's worked with talented musicians from all over; Ryiuchi Sakamoto, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, Bill Frissell, Jaques Morelenbaum and many many others. From this list you can imagine that Vinicius is of a more classical and musically rich sound and "Tucuma" to me is a good example of this.

The feel of the cd is very acoustic with a few sound effects at different times and slight electronic dashes in select tracks. But to stress it, this is a very acoustic album wit ha traditional feel. It starts out with Amor Brasileiro, a track with no real bass at all. Just his haunting yet easy voice over the guitars. Maravilhar is a track that has a nice samba beat in the background - very very romantic. Sanfona kicks it up a little bit, but then it's sraight into acoustic bliss with Aracaju. "Pra Gil" - the music is like the moment just before the sun melts into the landscape. But the lyrics... tell a different tale. This is a cd that reminds me of the fall, the leaves changing and countryside roads along the coast.

This is NOT an album that will inspire you to jump out of bed and run a few sprints. But I do like this album - maybe not as much as "Vinicius" which came afterwards, but maybe as much as "Sol Na Cara". The music is great and the songs are very rich and I'd recommend it to anyone that's already a fan of his work, or looking for something more relaxed. And if you dig this, you'd probably like music by Celso Fonseca. Vinicius Cantuaria has a few more releases out too - one new one titled "Horse & Fish" and a live performance. Only a few days ago he performed live in NYC and before that Washington DC but I think he's now in Europe.

3 out of 5 stars Get the album "Vinicius" and leave this one alone........2003-10-10

This album is okay, but not near the achievement of the follow up "Vinicius." "Sol Na Cara" the album preceeding this one is pretty good too. I had the pleasure of witness Mr. Cantuaria live in NYC's Tonic bar not too long ago and it was an amazing set. Apparently there is a new live double CD out now (2003) but it's difficult to find.

4 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Brazilian music; the REAL DEAL.......2001-08-19

Get this! Very little chance of anyone who's not tone-deaf being disappointed by this disc! I found the CD of "Tucuma' Used and bought it immediately after I downloaded "Agua Rasa," (from Cantauria's most recent album), which is the single most poetic and beautiful song they have for free-download at Amazon.

The first tune on "Tucuma": "Amor Brasileiro," is in the same vein and maybe even better than "Agua Rasa"; too bad you can't hear a sample here. It's one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard but it's more than just simple 'romance,' this guy has a poet's sensibility that pushes his tunes far above anyone else. He's in a class of his own like Gilberto and Jobim but his musicianship and sound concept is more influenced by modern pop and experimental sounds than straight Jazz (he even has a wonderfully eccentric tribute instrumental written for Ryuichi Sakamoto). And he's totally into his own thing, and sometimes even progressive enough to be in avant-garde territory as in the tune "Retirante" featuring a guest appearence by Laurie Anderson. Also: surprise of surprises, Sean Lennon, the son of the ultra-famous you know who and who, plays bass guitar on some of these tunes alongside New York jazz scene heavyweights. The great guitarist Bill Frisell makes an invaluable contribution to the sound and some tunes also add great eccentric understated string arrangments that never ever get in the way of the heart and soul of Canuaria's art but add sophistication and spice. Believe me, no one hates string sections more than me when they're not done right, and all the arrangements here are damn near perfect. In fact, my least favorite tune is the one that sounds the most like Getz/Gilberto and has a sax solo on it: "Maravilhar". There might have been some pressure to write at least one sort of 'familiar' tune like this, I don't know, but everything else is rooted in Bossa yet quite fresh and anti-rehash.

All in all, 8 out of 11 tunes on this album I never program around them and the other 3 I sometimes put in as a variation which is to say, it merits a high recommendation indeed!

P.S. If you like this album, check out "na rua, na chuva, na fazenda..." by Hyldon which is not just a classic of 1970s Brazilian music, unknown in the USA, but one of the greatest soul albums ever made, on a par with anything by Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye or Bill Withers.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Bossa with shades of Zen.......2001-02-14

As a long time fan of Jobim's music and Joao Gilberto's muted guitar chords/off-beat vocals , I am delighted to see that their ground-breaking idiom, after almost 40 years, still lends itself to fresher sounds. Cantuaria has a rounded, earthly voice in contrast to fragile tone of Gilberto. But the comparison must end there : he does sing effortlessly and meditatively. The real beauty of this album is in the sparse/modern instrumentation. Check out Nana Vasconcelos with his haunting berimbau in Joia, a clever song about happiness. Enjoy these minimalist and tasteful song collection in an age of excess productions.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxed Depth, Mature Musicianship.......1999-12-01

This album was announced as "new Bossa Nova" - which turns out to be something like "Bossa Nova Nova", hm, well... in Germany, there used to be a jazz festival called "Post This, Neo That". So much for this.
Tucuma is another example for the strong capability of some contemporary Brazilian musicians to link their tradition directly with oversears and directly with the future (Like Lenine, Caetano, Daude). It's amazing: There's the relaxed voice and acoustic guitar playing of Vinicius Cantuaria, his rich compositions, then there's Bill Frisell and some other New Yorkers bringing in their interpretation of Brazil, and then there is an additional layer of sample/loop/sound-design behind everything - and it works. You will enjoy this album over and over again, there's a richness of detail that invites closer listening and never fails to reveal some further beauty.
