Beverly Sills hardly needs an introduction. She sang on the radio as a child and on the operatic stage as a teenager; her meteoric international career was launched by appearances in several virtually unknown bel canto operas at the New York City Opera. This compilation of arias and ensembles from some of her signature roles, recorded in the 1970s, with splendid partners like Nicolai Gedda, Alfredo Kraus, and Sherrill Milnes, displays her unique vocal and dramatic artistry at its peak. Her voice, effortlessly produced over an enormous range, is bright, pure, infinitely variable in color, inflection and intensity. Her intonation is impeccable even in huge leaps, and her breath is endless. The coloratura roulades are like strings of perfect, luminous pearls, clearly articulated in seamless legato. But this stunning technique (whose only flaw is a sometimes wide, wobbly vibrato) is never used for show; every note has life and expression, serving the music and the dramatic situation. Indeed, her characters are flesh-and-blood human beings, whose thoughts, emotions and interactions, from inwardness to ecstasy, from lamentation to overflowing joy, she projects with riveting concentration. Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville is a charming, mischievous minx who succumbs to delighted tenderness; Pamira's great scene from his Siege of Corinth shows clearly why her Metropolitan Opera debut in that role was a sensation. In Verdi's Rigoletto, Gilda's hopeful innocence turns into hopeless despair: she dies, palpably, on a floating, celestial pianissimo. In his La traviata, Violetta's initial cool, hesitant restraint gradually melts as she opens herself (and her voice) to Alfredo's ardor and the bliss of love. The vocal balance in their final duet is uncanny; its tremulous tenderness in the shadow of death breaks the heart, as does her duet with Germont. Massenet's Thais is sensuous; Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Lehár's The Merry Widow provide comic relief. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Here's what the fuss was all about!.......2007-07-17

It would have been even better if they had included at least one Cleopatra aria and something from Baby Doe, but it doesn't really matter, because this collection will allow younger listeners especially to hear what the fuss was all about! There are moments listening to Sills, especially from Traviata or Manon, that are so beautifully sung and so genuine that they are heartbreaking. I feel so fortunate to have heard her Queen of the Night, Manon, Violetta, and Baby Doe. She was so generous as a performer and as a humanitarian, and she really brought opera into the American mainstream.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills - The Best.......2007-04-01

What a voice. No coloratura can compare, and she makes it seem so easy.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills' highs are breathtaking!.......2006-09-18

Adio del Passato is incredible! Beverly's high, floating coloratura is no less than ethereal which takes you to another world. Her voice has given me so much joy that it is hard to say one recording is better than another because I love her Mozart album equally with her Bellini/Donizetti. It is so wonderful to have these recordings captured on CD! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars THE 2005 OPERA CD OF THE YEAR.......2006-08-19

THIS CD WAS THE BEST OPERA CD ISSUED LAST YEAR, AND HAS CAUGHT THE WORLD'S EAR IN NO TIME. I WAS BUSY WRITING IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, WHILE THE STATEOWNED FM RADIOSTATION, DEDICATED TO CULTURE, WAS SOFTLY PLAYING OPERA ARIAS IN THE BACKGROUND. SUDDENLY I HEARD THE MOST FANTASTIC RENDERING OF "SEMPRE LIBERA" FROM "LA TRAVIATA". I GOT UP, SAT BY THE RADIO AND WAITED TO KNOW WHO WAS SINGING... THEN GOT BACK TO THE COMPUTER TO ORDER THIS CD FROM AMAZON! INCREDIBLE: ONLY 17 BUCKS FOR THIS, WHILE QUITE A BIT OF TRASH IS SOLD FOR 30.40 AND MORE...
A LADY FRIEND ONCE TOLD ME SHE COULD NOT LISTEN TO THE DUET IN "MADAMA BUTTERFLY" WITH MIRELLA FRENI AND LUCIANO PAVAROTTI (RECORDED IN 1974, BY VON KARAJAN) WITHOUT CRYING. WELL, YOU CANNOT LISTEN TO SILLS IN "LA TRAVIATA" DRY-EYED, NO MATTER WHO THE TENOR IS. SHE PROJECTS THE SAME DRAMATIC FEELING OF "LA DIVINA" CALLAS WITHOUT THOSE SHRIEKED HIGHNOTES; SHE OFFERS THE SAME COLORATURA VOCAL GYMNASTICS AS "LA STUPENDA" SUTHERLAND BUT WITH WARMTH... WHEN BEVERLY SANG, AS IN EVERYTHING ELSE SHE DID, SHE ALWAYS GAVE HER UTMOST. SHE WAS "LA GENEROSA" TO BE SURE.
DON'T JUST SIT THERE READING WHAT OTHERS THINK.
ORDER THIS CD NOW AND MARVEL AT HOW THIS GREAT AMERICAN LADY, IN SO MANY OTHER WAYS, ALSO COULD SING!

5 out of 5 stars EMI Does It Again: Beverly Sills - A Tribute.......2005-07-22

EMI's "Very Best Of" series are perfect introductions to operatic singers of the 20th century. Once you hear these artist tribute albums (much like The Singers series) you will get hooked on the singer and seek out their full-length studio recordings. Beverly Sills was the first truly famous American opera star. One may argue that she was not, that she was merely a continued tradition of American divas such as Mary Garden and Lily Pons and which still continues today with Renee Fleming, Elizabeth Futral and Susan Graham. Beverly was raised in New York City, which is still her home, and which is the home of the New York City Opera and the Met, opera houses which rocketed her to fame. Her first success (not featured in this recording...UH WHY ?) was Cleopatra of Handel's Julius Caesar, a performance she sang opposite the illustrious baritone Norman Treigle. Those performances were legendary because coincidentally at the same time the Met was opening its new theatre and season with what became a disastrous Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra starring Leontyne Price in an overblown, big-budget, epic fiasco. The great roles that followed the 1965 Cleopatra were Manon, Queen Elizabeth I in Roberto Deveraux, Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena in the Donizetti Tudor Queen operas, Pamira in The Siege of Corinth (which were Sill's La Scala and belated Met debut. None of the Queens are featured in this recording, though its supposedly the Very Best Of. An aria from Rossini's Siege of Corinth is featured here however. What we are treated to however are fine lyric roles- Beverly Sills shone brightly and acted convincingly as Gilda in Rigoletto (the final scene is featured here) as Violetta in La Traviata, Thais, The Merry Widow (the beautiful Vilja is featured here)and the ingenue role of Norina in Don Pasquale is also showcased here. To each of these roles, Beverly Sills delivered an authenticity and dramatic interpretation, not ot mention beautiful, sweet tone. I love her pianissimos, her high notes, her chest register. It was the voice of Beverly Sills who first hooked me into opera. For a recording that should showcase her best work, Manon is not featured nor any of her prized French heroines- Marie in The Daughter of the Regiment and the heroines in Tales of Hoffman. Also not in here is the role that was her first success- the Broadway opera Ballad of Baby Doe. Even as such, the arias here are gorgeous. The Barber of Seville is in here and as Rosina she is playful and charming. Sills was a modern singer, with a voice that was beautiful but willing to sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic content. When Sills was once asked what she thought of the supposed rivalry with Joan Sutherland (which was never real and only gossip from partisan fans) Beverly said something to this effect -Joan and I are apples and oranges in our take on opera, we are Picasso and Monet. She would do anything for the effect of beauty and tone, I'd sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic text. Even as such, I see no ugliness to any of the roles here. All of them are beautiful to hear, full of rich floating celestial tones. It would have been nice to hear the roles that did call for Sills to step up the tense drama - Norma, will her recording ever be reissued by EMI ? Also, few people know that Beverly Sills sung role most would consider dangerous for her voice (though she sang them long before her career even took off)- Aida and Carmen!!

4 out of 5 stars Themeless Opera.......2006-10-19

As far as I know this work of 1843 is the last major opera buffa to be composed unless the definition of the genre is expanded to include works like Verdi's Falstaff. Although the recording booklet states that Don Pasquale is Donizetti's "undoubted comic masterpiece," I prefer L'Elisir D'Amore (1832), a less formulaic work labeled a "melodrama." There is nothing wrong with formulaic art as long as the formula means something. Paisiello's opera buffa Astrologi Immaginari (1779) satirizes dilettante pretensions to being a "philosopher" and thus disposes of a vestige of Renaissance culture that was fading away after 1740. Paisiello's opera makes good sense and is perfectly matched by the music. I find it more difficult to assign meaning to Don Pasquale; and the opera may well appeal to audiences interested in themeless "mere entertainment." The work synthesizes Rossini's approach to instrumental music with Bellini's style of flowing bel canto arias. The appeal of bel canto might be described as a physical sensation. All art depends on sensation. But opera consists of drama, and themeless drama makes no sense. The recording booklet reports that at Paris, "The critics found the subject somewhat threadbare." Themeless work could not compete, for example, with the striking historical settings of Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots and Le Prophete or even with Bellini's Norma and I Puritani. The contrast between these operas and Don Pasquale is analogous to the one between the rich historical settings of Sir Walter Scott's novels and the uncolored, if intelligently worked out settings of Jane Austen. In appreciating Don Pasquale, one must develop a taste for Plain Jane and set aside "Robert the Devil." As Dr. Malatesta sings in Act I, Scene 5, "You have to play the simpleton." Ironically Donizetti based his most popular opera Lucia di Lammermoor on a Scott novel.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the others - buy this one!.......2003-10-02

I originally purchased the RCA Red Seal recording of this opera with Bruson-Mei-Lopardo-Allen never having heard the work before. While the Red Seal recording certainly did not sound bad, I couldn't help but think that, as the heroine, Mei missed a lot of opportunities to hit those incredible highs that Donizetti is so famous for. Since I wasn't familiar with the work, I only assumed that she opted to go an octave lower than Donizetti had originally intended for the part. Well, sure enough I finally saw the opera performed live in San Jose and was blown away by all the highs that the soprano hit throughout the show. I immediately purchased this recording to see if the Norina in this particular performance (Barbara Hendricks) offered a more gutsy performance and boy does she ever! Mei's voice on the Red Seal recording is undeniably beautiful, but Hendricks simply blows her out of the water with all of her vocal fireworks in this recording. The orchestras and male performers are equally good in both, but if you love the sound of a bel canto soprano hitting an incredible high note, then forget about the RCA recording and go for this one instead.

5 out of 5 stars A Funny side we dont hear often.......2005-11-07

Callas is so associated with her roles of tragic women such as Norma, Lucia ,Violeta and Tosca that her talent for other roles are overshadowed. The La Divina is so versatile and talented that people almost forget that she is equally good in tragic and light comedy roles. The light and comic side of Callas is not often revealed. This recording proves that the charming and witty music that suites the character of Fiorilla is suited for the great talent of Maria Callas .The other performers in this recording did a superb job in their performances. Selim is a charm, Nicolai Gedda shows youth, and Stabile creates an impression in his role as Prosdocimo. Overall this is the Best Il turco in Italia among the three versions I have heard. So for Callas fans who want to hear the other side of Callas purchase this recording its worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and surprising Callas.......2005-08-13

I have been looking for this CD for a long time. I had an old set in tape format. When EMI first remastered this performance in CD, it was very expensive for me at the time. This performance goes in and out of production, I guess it does not sell well, which it is a shame, because these are superb performances from all the principals and supporting cast.

This recording is a joy to listen to. Who knew that all these singers known for their powerful dramatic performances in heavy hitters such as Bellini's "Norma" could be such great comedians. Their performances are a feast for the ears.

My most favorite scene is from Disc 1 tracks 18 to 21. It is hilarious to hear Callas singing the crafty Fiorilla, playing the "offended" wife to her husband's attempts to rein in her roving eye!. When she sings "No mia vita...mio tesoro" (No my darling... my treasure) with such fake sticky-honeyed-tongue,you can HEAR her fake tears. Callas subtly overplays her singing from such roles as Elvira and Medea in this very small scene alone. She does it with such mastery, you can hear the musical threads of Elvira from "Qui la voce" in Fiorilla's "voi crudele!... mi fatte oltraggio! mi offendete!" (you cruel one!, you humilliate me!, you offend me!) in such pitiable tones that her husband bids good-bye to his courage after listening to such demonstrations of wounded dignity and pride.

She sings her fake tears in such a way, that, for a moment you feel sorry for this wronged woman! then, through a subtle change in the shading of the notes, you realize, she's faking them! thorough the music, you can picture Fiorilla, looking thorough her fingers at her husband, pouring it on, laying it on thick, watching the effect her "tears" are having on the poor chap.

When he kneels at her feet defeated, begging forgiveness, she rounds on him with such a Medea-esque fury in "ed ossate minnaciarmi! maltratarmi, spaventarmi! (and you dare to threaten me, mistreat me, scare me!) that the unhappy, innocent, unsuspecting, antler-addled man has no idea how he lost the argument!!. When Fiorilla knows she's won, you can hear again on her music, how blythely, happily and carefree, she goes out enjoying her power. I replay this scene over and over. And along with her husband, I am caught unaware and became dumbstruck by her tears and her fury.

My other favorite scene is on track 28, when Fiorilla and Zaida have a fight. The have such a row, you cannot help but to picture these two women in an Italian open-air market, among the produce and fish stalls with those typical italian gestures, being dragged away from each other by their embarrased lovers hurling abuse at each other trying to have the last word.

If you want a more musical critique regarding this opera, John Ardoin's "The Callas Legacy" book is a superb source explaining Callas' musical genius. Ardoin will give you greater details on the music execution of the entire cast and interesting tidbits on one of the cast members, Aureliano Pertile.

The booklet that accompanies this set is very informative and in various languages. I love this set and hope that whoever listens to it will enjoy as much as I do. I wonder how Cecilia Bartoli's Turco would measure against Callas'. Although I love and admire Cecilia's ability to sing bel canto roles and her deft handling of Rossini's music, but, I'm afraid I know and love Callas's singing skills even more.

5 out of 5 stars So funny.......2004-06-13

This is proof that those who say that Callas couldn't sing happy or funny parts. Her Fiorilla is deliciously funny. Absolutely exquisite, a must!

5 out of 5 stars Deliciously funny!.......2004-01-28

I saw her live in this role... She was the funniest Fiorilla ever! An enchanting must for every operalover!

3 out of 5 stars Only for Callas lovers.......2001-06-15

Yes, this recording is only for Callas lovers, because she do so well her part in this ultra-cut recording. Rossi-Lemeni doesn't reach the power of Ramey, but Stabile print his personal and arcaic way of singing and doing comedy. But for Rossini lovers, this recording seems a "demo" or "sample" one, because there are parts in pieces or complete pieces which has been cut (it must be because there was not a critic edition of this opera). I'm disapointed of Rossini when I listened Il Turco (i didnt never heard this opera) but when i heard the Marriner and Chailly recording, I disapointed from Gavazzeni and La Scala. If this was recorded in the critical and complete edition, it was the definitive recording (the same appreciation applies for the Puritani, Barbiere, Sonnambula, Lucia, Norma, etc)

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16

The artistry of Rita Streich presented in this multi-disc set represents an art that in all likelihood would not return: the Viennese school of coloratura and lyrical singing.
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.

5 out of 5 stars This is it -- the best condensed collection!.......2006-12-14

If you don't want to go through the painstaking process of collecting all 45 volumes of the older Philips Complete Mozart Edition, which could end up costing close to $2,000 by the time you have the entire collection, you should eye this condensed set. Granted, it doesn't have ALL the works of Mozart (hence, its title!) so, for the Mozart completist or fanatic, this boxed set will only leave one salivating for more. I am fortunate enough to own both the whole collection and the 'Best of' set and sometimes this 'Best of' set satifies me for a quick fix. The performers of the Philips Complete Mozart Edition are first class and, many would consider, THE world's most acclaimed Mozartian conductors and performers. To me, there is no one who can capture the spirit of Mozart's pieces as well as Sir Neville Marriner and the ASMF. Perhaps with today's technology, some pieces could be better digitally remastered but, quite frankly, I do not hear any hissing sound from these recordings (some from the 1980's), even after being downloaded into my iPod. Don't waste your time and money chasing other Mozart collections because, to date, I have not come across any others that quite compare to the Philips Complete Mozart Edition. Even the 'Best of' set merits more than 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars The definitive collection--worth the effort........2002-10-13

I'm fascinated with this collection; the selection of performances is superb and you always an authoritative interpretation for each piece. The selection of material is very well balanced. This collection is all the Mozart I'll need for the next decade. It is a good buy if you have only two or three Mozart albums in your CD collection and are intending to deepen your knowledge of this greatest of composers.

A couple of drawbacks in the collection are its lack of decent accompaining literature (you only get the CD's succint liner notes in four languages) and an occasional selection with poor sound quality or hiss from an old recording. The average quality of the remasterizations, though, is very good. You should probably get a nice book on Mozart to read while listening.

Importers beware! this product could produce massive import duties. Check before ordering.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2000-04-14

This is a high quality set, well worth the money. It is an investment in beautiful music for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Go no further than this loving compilation.......2000-02-24

I have many editions in the Philips Complete Mozart Edition ("one-stop shopping" is my middle name) and I recommend them thoroughly and emphatically. Life is too short not to listen to Mozart each and every day of your life. Thanks to those at Philips who put this monster together; we really appreciate it. So does Wolfie. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart Goo.......1999-12-20

This is the most extensive collection of Mozart that you can buy all in one set. Over 48 hours of nothing but Mozart! Need I say more? Its a little pricey, but well worth the cash.

Few singers received the adulation accorded Lucrezia Bori, whose glorious soprano finally gets its recorded due in these miraculous transfers by Ward Marston, which convey the body and warmth slighted in her previous incarnations on LP and CD. Bori's light, lyric voice was used with intelligence and pathos, making her one of the greatest Puccini singers, a wonderful Traviata, a spirited Carmen, and a masterful advocate of Spanish song, all virtues in evidence here. Most treasurable are the duets with partners like John McCormack, Tito Schipa, and Beniamino Gigli in concerted pieces like the Rigoletto "Quartet." Her "O Parigi" duet with McCormack is priceless. Even her Mozart arias, however unstylish they may seem these days, get to the heart of the music. --Dan Davis
