Rosanna Tavares and Zelia Fonseca, who hail from Brazil's Minas Gerais district, have been performing their delicate blend of Brazilian music since they were 14 and have toured Europe for years. Recorded in Germany in 1996, with guest artists like violinist Martin Schnabel; Eberhard Hahn on flute, clarinet, and sax; and Dino Saluzzi on bandoneon, Passagem showcases their very particular fusions of folk, pop, and jazz elements meshed with a wide range of Brazilian musical elements and instrumentations. Rosanna is the voice of the duo, offering a Ricky Lee Jones tonality and sensibility over Zelia's guitar- and viola-led orchestrations, which are intelligent and airy, yet dynamic. Percussionist Angela Frontera contributes greatly to the richness and variety of the overall sound, which, although it is light and breezy, has great musicality and an integrity that invites repeat listening. --Derek Rath

It's an incredible CD; Brazilian music of its best quality. Amazon should offer the second one, which is also a gem. The new CD (1999) is called COISARIO and is excellent. Check it out!

Inventive music, no viola.......1999-10-15

I agree with the amazon.com review above, but should mention one error: there's no viola on the CD. In Brazilian Portugese, "violao" means acoustic guitar and "guitarra" means electric guitar. I don't know if that will trouble many listeners, though, given the clever mix of jazz and MPB on this CD. Two talented performers.

Astor Piazolla, Tuck and Patti, rolled into 1.......1999-05-28

Wow! The Passagem is a gem. I first heard it on GoGaGa Brand Radio. I'm a huge Astor Piazzola fan. And Tuck & Patti I've also enjoyed. Check this one out. I hope it stays available more readily.
