By the time Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic made the recordings featured here, they had been together for more than a decade. There is a lustiness and power to the playing throughout the orchestra. From the lilt and swagger of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 to the sensuous humor of Grieg's Norwegian Dance--made memorable for oboist Ralph Gomberg's solo playing--Bernstein brought out the best from this strong and virtuosic orchestra. Here, Sibelius's Valse Triste is all grace and elegance. The Swan of Tuonela is superb for it's dreamlike pacing and the marvelous English horn playing. Finlandia makes a perfect finale. All this music is evocative and it remains in motion every moment, however subtly. --Gwendolyn Freed

4 out of 5 stars The Grieg is ordinary, but the Sibelius items are unforgettable.......2007-02-20

Bernstein was a great and devoted Sibelian, on a par with Karajan and Beecham among international maestros. I don't think the reviewers below have much of an idea how exquisite this Swan of Tuonela is, played with total freedom and naturalness; the English horn soloist plays with moving expressivity. Even better is Finlandia, so often a throw away but here performed as if the entire nation of Finland were listening. It's a huge, bravura performance that brings out the brash side of the NY Phil. Bernstein's Valse triste, however, lacks mystery and rpoceeds a bit flat-footedly.

You can find the Finlandia and Swan in other pairings, which might be just as well since Bernstein's Peer Gynt Suite #1 is just a run-through, despite a rousing In the Hall of the Mountain King. It's not in as good sound as the Sibelius items, either.

4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-01-17

Why did they have to add Sibelius compositions to this CD? How about more
Grieg??? I like the 20 bit sound on these Bernstein Century CDs. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Turn it up!.......2006-02-16

This is a great CD but I can't hear it unless I turn it way WAY up on my car CD or portable CD player. I'm not sure why. I wanted to hear Morning Mood on my morning commute but can't seem to get it loud enough.

3 out of 5 stars Rather Bland for my taste....................2005-01-22

If you enjoy these works of Grieg and Sibelius you might find it helpful to know that the Karajan recording is much better than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein adds flavor, not power, proves even better.......2001-05-20

We've all heard Grieg's classic Morning or In the Hall of the Mountain King time and again. Bernstein, however, does an incredible job at making the music come alive. Although it does like power at times, I think Bernstein added much more emotion, clearly evident in Ase's Death and Sibelius' Finlandia. And although the recording was made in th 40s, the older recording technique adds a unique flavor, especially to the violins, which seem to scream in Peer Gynt. Although these pieces are by no means masterpieces of human expression, Bernstein has done an incredible job, and I find myself listening to these short little tunes over and over.

5 out of 5 stars For old progressive freaks.......2006-03-18

This record is one of the most beautiful productions of italian progressive rock. A lot of talen on the musicians and so much inocence when "playing" with alternatives.

4 out of 5 stars Classical themes, thunderous rock, and a few weak pop tunes........2006-01-29

This CD compilation repackages Concerto Grosso No. 1 (1971) with Concerto Grosso No. 2 (1976). As far as re-releases go, it is not spectacular, but is pretty darn cheap.

CONCERTO GROSSO NO. 1 *****

The incredible Concerto Grosso No. 1 (albeit of poor recording quality) opens with the sound of an orchestra warming up, which tapers off with the sound of an irritated conductor rapping his baton on the stand. The next thing that is heard is a wonderful violin solo, which then launches (unexpectedly I might add) into a thunderous assault of drums, bass, heavily distorted guitar and horribly "overblown" flute (a la Ian Anderson). Ah, but it is pure prog bliss! Concerto Grosso No. 1 was written by Luis Enrique Bacalov and is divided into four movements including:

1. Allegro 2'15" (quick, lively) - this is the section of thunderous drums/bass/guitar mentioned above;

2. Adagio-Shadows 4'50" (slow) - this movement is beautiful, haunting and features some excellent vocalists that sing the line "to die, to sleep, perchance to dream" from Shakespeare's Hamlet (in English). This is one of the more moving moments in progressive rock;

3. Cadenza - Andante con moto 4'10" (a Cadenza is an ornamental passage introduced near the end of a song/solo, while Andante con moto means moving easily, with agitation) - the "agitation" here is provided by an absolutely brilliant and highly virtuosic violin solo. The haunting themes from Movement 2 are reintroduced with some falsetto vocals; and

4. Shadows (Jimmy Hendrix) 5'30" - this section opens with some very stately and "churchy" sounding Hammond organ, themes from Movement 2 are reiterated, which then give way to a roaring section that features wild and ear-splitting Jimi Hendrixian guitar playing and a ripping, Jethro Tull-like flute solo.

The album closes with a 20'30" raucous, bluesy/hard rock jam session entitled Nella sala vuota, improvvisazioni dei New Trolls that features some great Hammond organ work, great vocal sections, and good performances by everybody in the band, although the seven minute drum solo really got on my last nerve.

CONCERTO GROSSO No. 2 ***

While the Concerto Grosso No. 2 itself is excellent, it does not possess the reckless abandon of Concerto Grosso No. 1, although the recording quality is much better and analog synthesizers are used. Unfortunately, the album as a whole is really is not all that great and it is not the Concerto that is the problem - what drags this album down are the remaining tracks, which are simply poorly written/executed pop tunes. Although the last track is proggy, it is again, not very well written.

All in all I would say that this "two-fer" is a pretty good deal, and if you don't mind the weaker material on Concerto Grosso No. 2, should provide a good deal of listening enjoyment. Besides, it is an easy way to get two New Trolls recordings cheaply.

4 out of 5 stars the most eclectic prog band?.......2003-10-24

This 2-in-1 CD is good value for those who like rock music fused with classical treatments. The original Concerto Grosso (tracks 1-5) is the better work, albeit with a slightly raw and rockier edge. The orchestrations on the first three songs, arranged by Luis Baclava, have their moments, particularly some fine violin playing.

The lyric underlying the Concerto is taken from Shakespeare's Hamlet, and this theme runs through the first side: seemingly as an ode for the recently departed Jimi Hendrix (it was recorded in 1971). The rock basis of the work takes over in track 4, with a classy blues guitar combining with aggressively played flute, harking back to the kinds of sounds Hendrix made on Electric Ladyland.

The last track, side two of the original disc, is a rock improvisation, at times referencing Jethro Tull's track "Living in the past" and later on organ and rhythm-guitar driven early Santana, and it includes a quite superb drum solo.

The second Concerto Grosso (tracks 6-13) is far more eclectic, and to my taste not nearly as convincing. The first three tracks contain classical orchestration, like the first album, and most successful are the two lyrical movements, Andante and Moderato. Truly haunting and beautiful. The production values are much better generally, the musicianship good, but after the initial movements the quality of the music slides and loses any sense of being conceptually related to the initial idea.

Some of the remaining tunes on what was the second side of this lp originally hark back to an earlier pop era, while others borrow from Elton John, PFM (good!), Queen and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and there is even an R&B/soul track. The band members seem to have a restlessness and curiosity about all styles of music that is reflected in the recordings sandwiched between the original release dates of these two, 1971 and 1976.

One needs to examine those lps closely to get the full range of the New Trolls' varied musical expression, hinted at here. There were also projects revolving around the two principal members, De Scalzi (keyboards, flute, guitars)in NT Atomic System and Di Palo (guitar)with Ibis.

In combination, excerpts of both Concerto Grosso albums are really good and some of the tunes quite haunting. For me, the first album is more successful and indicates the quality that emerged in the subsequent double album with all English lyrics, Searching for a Land (1972), which is full of great songs and amazing musical highlights.

4 out of 5 stars Two Great Recordings on One CD.......2002-04-11

A very early Italian progressive recording is represented by "Concerto Grosso No. 1", which occupies the first half of this CD. Excellent, crisp recording with heavy classical overtones sounds as fresh today as it must have then. Worth the price of the disc by itself. "Concerto Grosso No. 2", from a few years later, is great, also. Boy, there are parts of it that really remind me of elements of "Tormato" by Yes, so if you like that album you will probably like this. Vocals in both Italian and English.

4 out of 5 stars Five stars for Concerto Grosso #1, three stars for #2.......2001-12-02

Concerto Grosso Per 1 (1971) is a truly excellent example of rock mixed with classical, many thanks to strings conducted by Argentinian-born Luis Enriquez Bacalov (he later did the strings to Osanna's Milano Calibro 9 and of RDM's Contaminazione and it's English-language counterpart, Contamination). What this album has in common with the Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed, Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth and King Arthur, and Procol Harum's Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is this happens to be another one of those rock albums that uses a symphony orchestra. While Wakeman's style seemed to be more of a Hollywood-film style, and the Moody Blues' was more of a 19th century style, the orchestral style of Concerto Grosso Per 1 is more of a Baroque, 18th century style. It's kind of like Bach or Mozart meets Jethro Tull and Jimi Hendrix. Themes often get repeated as well. There's also a lengthy jam that gets really killer with the Hammond organ and Farfisa electric piano, although there's a drum solo that's about three times longer than In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida that might bore some of you (not me though). Concerto Grosso Nr. 2 (1976) is not quite as good. To me I find this rather messy, because the band seemed to be under a severe identity crisis. There are some nice progressive rock numbers here (much more refined and sophisticated than what's on #1), but there are some rather pop-oriented numbers, and even a cover of an R&B song, "Let It Be Me", which is not particularly progressive in this version. "Vent'Anni" sounds exactly like an Italian version of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, one of the vocalists went as far as sounding just like Stephen Stills! I can't help but be reminded a little of "Country Girl" off Déjà Vu. Concerto Grosso Nr. 2 isn't a total disaster, and I have grown to like the album more, but the first Concerto Grosso is much better. But at least Fonit Cetra had the sense to cram both Concerto Grossos on to one CD, so you really get your money's worth. So if you like Italian prog, give this disc a spin.

5 out of 5 stars Lo mejor de lo mejor de New Trolls.......2006-12-13
