Considered by many to be the last great musical comedy, Gypsy tells the backstage tale of vaudeville entertainer turned stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and her overbearing mother, Rose. Stephen Sondheim's lyrics--composed in advance of Jule Styne's infectious music--provide a tight structure and natural language to the 1959 score, which produced more than its share of Broadway standards, including "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Small World," "Some People," "If Momma Was Married," "Together Wherever We Go," and the climactic "Rose's Turn." Although the role of Rose has seen subsequent memorable interpretations by Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and Bette Midler, the show was written for Ethel Merman, and she remains the definitive stage mother. For this 1999 release, the recording has been remastered with numerous short passages restored and four tracks added. Merman sings alternate lyrics to "Some People" and a medley of "Mr. Goldstone" and "Little Lamb," all with piano accompaniment. Two other tracks are songs cut in tryouts: "Momma's Talking Soft" (gently swung here by Laura Leslie) was a duet for June and Louise that provides some context to the later line "Momma's talking loud," while "Nice She Ain't" is crooned by Bernie Knee, who is infinitely more suave than Jack Klugman ever would have been. Expanded to 63 minutes, this essential cast recording is now even more essential. --David Horiuchi

Let Them Entertain You.......2007-01-27
Let me see you smile
I will do some kicks
I will do some tricks
(Mama Rose)
Sing out, Louise! Sing out!
I'll tell you a story
I'll dance when she's done
(Mama Rose)
You're behind, honey!
Catch up! Catch up!
By the time we're through entertaining you
You'll have a barrel of fun!
Gypsy remains one of the very finest musicals ever produced. With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim how could you go wrong? Well, they certainly didn't go wrong; and this original cast recording proves it.
I agree with people who believe that the overture for this musical is one of the finest ever written. It flows beautifully and seamlessly through portions of many of the musical arrangements for the songs in this musical. Impressive!
The musical score on this CD contains many songs that to this day remain instantly recognizable. "Let me Entertain You;" "Some People;" "Small World;" "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Together Wherever We Go" boast those catchy Jule Styne melodies and incredible lyrics that only Sondheim could have written.
"Let Me Entertain You" is the first song on this CD; and Ethel Merman as Mama Rose with Jacqueline Mayro as Baby June and Karen Moore as Baby Louise perform this flawlessly. The song flows so naturally that you completely believe that the two young girls are truly being coached by their domineering mother as they rehearse for a kiddie show in a vaudeville theater. Ethel Merman delivers "Some People" very convincingly; it is here that we see the first undeniable evidence that Merman was born to play Mama Rose. Merman belts out this song passionately as only she could; Merman blows the roof off the house.
Other great songs on this CD include the beautifully arranged "Small World" which is performed with great sensitivity by Ethel Merman as Jack Klugman joins in to make the song even more romantic; the moving "If Momma Was Married" by Sandra Church and Lane Bradbury as they deeply wish for a reprieve from their pushy stage mother; "Everything's Coming Up Roses" sung without a single superfluous note by Ethel Merman and "Together Wherever We Go" performed by Ethel Merman, Jack Klugman and Sandra Church.
Ethel Merman also delivers one especially powerful number at the end of the musical, "Rose's Turn." Merman's voice remains as strong, vibrant and passionate as ever as her character laments that things didn't turn out as happily as she had planned. The musical arrangement underscores Mama Rose's descent into a type of nervous breakdown as Mama Rose performs her swan song.
The CD continues with four bonus tracks that include entire numbers that originally wound up on the cutting room floor. These tracks add color to the original cast recording and enable the listener to hear even the slightest of differences editors made as they rushed to release the LP only one week after Gypsy opened at The Broadway Theater. Look for some interesting changes in "Some People;" "Mr. Goldstone/Little Lamb;" as well as two songs that were dropped from this production of Gypsy entitled "Mama's Talking Soft" and "Nice She Ain't." Excellent bonuses!
The sound quality is rather good although there were times when I could hear minor surface noise in the background. The liner notes offer black and white pictures from Gypsy and essays by Martin Gottfried and Tom Shepard. There are liner notes reprinted from the original LP jacket by George B. Dale, too.
Gypsy was produced several times more after this production closed. However, this is the definitive version because Ethel Merman carries the show with her zesty and powerful voice. Nobody could or ever will touch Ethel Merman as the quintessential Mama Rose.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of original cast recordings of great Broadway musicals; and of course Ethel Merman fans will thrill to these superlative numbers.
Enjoy!
Fabulous! Fabulous! Fabulous!.......2006-06-28
One of the all-time greats, but it needs a new Kleigl light.......2006-03-17
But I've discussed the property when I should be discussing the cast album. There's little to say. People who call this the greatest show ever are being silly. Perhaps it is as an integrated whole. There are better scores. Indeed Jule Styne wrote better tunes; go back to his work with Sammy Cahn, and go back especially to that Harry James-Kitty Kallen immortality "It's Been a Long Long Time." Go back to Blue Eyes's renditions. No, I would not want to say this is better than "Show Boat." But it's still darned good. (Of the newly-renovated album it goes without saying.) The problem is, it could be better; and with Ethel Merman eternally ringing in our ears we know how difficult that will ever be. But we can always...have a dream.
Amazing to Discover.......2006-02-01
Essential Ethel.......2005-08-14
The classic score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim is filled with memorable songs.
Best tracks include:
Some People
Small World
You'll Never Get Away From Me
All I Need Is The Girl
Everything's Coming Up Roses
Together Wherever We Go
Let Me Entertain You
Rose's Turn
Despite losing that seasons Best Musical Tony Award to "The Sound Of Music" & "Fiorello" (a tie), "Gypsy" remains a force on Broadway, revived three times since its original run, with Angela Landsbury, Tyne Daly & Bernadette Peters in the starring role. Each brought a different perspective to Rose, but the character will always belong to Ms. Merman!
A classic!

This soundtrack for the popular, goth-rooted, X-Box role-playing adventure is another powerful example of how artistically accomplished the video game industry has become. Indeed, its ambitious musical score frequently outshines many of its mega-budgeted Hollywood competitors. Oingo Boingo founder-turned-noted contemporary film scorer Danny Elfman anchors the album with an ominously heroic main theme worthy of one of his sweeping, big budget superhero sagas. But in providing the balance of the music, composer Russell Shaw doesn't so much follow Elfman's muscular symphonic lead as skillfully play off it. Shaw's impressive cues here manage to conjure an inviting aura of non-specific time and place, filling it with masterful orchestral and choral arrangements that evoke suspense, wonder, terror, and mischief with equal aplomb. His dark, Omen-invoking "Lychfield Cemetary" is particularly effective, as is the pizzicato string waltz of "Bowerstone." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Easily top 10 best game soundtracks ever........2007-06-08
The opening theme, composed by Danny Elfman (Edward Scissor Hands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride), really sets the tone for the game. Epic and exciting.
From there, Lionhead Studios own Russel Shaw composes the rest of this brilliant album. Playing off Elfman's theme here and there, but always giving you something original, fantastic in its own right.
From the carefree, almost fairytale-like "Summer Fields", to the chilling melody of "Darkwood", the variety is great. Even better is the performance of the Philharmonic London Orchestra...they do a wonderful job of bringing these pieces of music to life.
It's a shame more studios don't go to this level of quality when producing music.
Beautifully done.......2006-08-16
The rest of the tracks are excellent and blend nicely, while complimenting Elfman's work.
You would almost expect this to be a piece for a movie, it doesn't have the feeling of a game composition at all.

An excellent disc . . ........2007-04-05
What happens here, it seems to me, is that we've got two separate discs--a trio date and a quintet date, with four of each--where we'd be better served to have one or the other.
Me, I think I'd opt for a complete trio session. Which is odd for me, seeing as I generally favor an expanded musical palette, and I also regard Joe Ford (alto sax) as one of my favorite players.
However.
There seems such a remarkable, even unique, chemistry between leader Willis, Eddie Gomez, bass, and Billy Drummond, drums, that the quintet numbers, great as they are, almost come across as intrusions.
Still.
"Insidious Behavior," a quintet number, seems, perhaps, the most accomplished and engaging number on the disc.
OK, let's clear the air. What's going on here, I'm thinking, is myopic jazz thinking that can't seem to figure what the optimal approach ought to be for any given session. What ends up happening is a great but schizophrenic session--seamless integrality sacrificed for expedience: We can't make up our minds which is working better--trio or quintet--so let's feature both.
But, let's face it, that doesn't really work. So what we've got is a fish out of water: a great session that could've been even greater if someone had stepped in and said, look: this is what we're going to do, quintet or trio, it doesn't matter.
Nevertheless, this is absolutely fantastic jazz by wonderful musicians. If it isn't optimal, so what. What we've got here shines very brightly. But next time, let's make up our minds about what works best and avoid the awkwardness of competing formats.
Another fine outing from an underrated master........2007-03-31
Here Larry teams with master bassist Eddie Gomez and the outstanding but underrated Billy Drummond. This is one great rhythm section here. On 3 of the pieces he features longtime associate and TDWRs Joe Ford on sax and trombonist Steve Davis.
Joe has worked with Larry before and has that range of playing sensitively and with great power. Steve Davis has marvelous tone, a sense of swing and can out-and-out play!!!
I love this recording's version of 'Rhythm-A-Ning'. It's wide open and features the trio's strongest assets. Larry's solo is unique in it's approach. Complex, subtle, swinging, with a sense of space. Larry has this keen sense of placement. He knows exactly the best way to phrase things with a sense of implication. By that I mean is that he inserts a shading or a hue that cast things in a diffent light, at the risk of mixing my metaphors. Eddie Gomez has such a vivid imagination. He swings hard on this and when his moment comes he delivers a unique and interesting solo. Billy Drummond starts the piece out with a musical solo. Some times drummers come in full force, with in blaze of double and single stroke ferocity, that often times have nothing to do with melody or the piece to follow. Billy solo, introduces the piece perfectly. He then keeps thing swinging while encouraging the others with his drumming.
'Never Let Me Go' - is perfect example of Larry's ballad artistry. Like Ellington he always fine these voicings and spaces out the notes in a certain way that you don't hear other pianists do. This is a real highpoint on this recording.
'Nardis' - Larry has recorded this before and it's no less compelling here on this recording with this trio and their reading of it. Very, very good. The dynamics of this one is quite different from the previous version he recorded on "Let's Play" (an outstanding recording, one of his best). Here it Eddie's bass literally sings in unison with Larry's piano. The interplay is startling. This particular version is stark in it's beauty. Billy Drummond shows how sensitive he is to the subtle shifts and changes in this composition. His drumming on this should be shown as an example to all aspiring young drummers on how to play in a trio perfectly. Eddie takes a marvelous bass solo here. Very, very imaginative and during the solos on this piece, there is this interplay, this dialog that constantly going and evolving thought the piece and this recording.
'Who's Kidding Who' - Is another reinterpretation. This is one of my favorite pieces that Larry's performed in the past. A very touching ballad.
"Prayer for New Orleans" - is also a favorite. I love the horn unison passages. It's starts out with this bittersweet prayer of a horn passage and then promptly segues into a mid-tempo piece. Both Joe Ford and Steve Davis shine beautifully on this cut. It's one of those soulful pieces with that soulful Horace Silver thing going. Larry comes in after Joe Ford's solo in perfect contrast. Billy Drummond's drumming is superb here. Gives it exactly what it needs. He drives it along without overpowering the piece nor the other players.
I could go on and on breaking down the cuts but let me just say that this is recording worth getting. It's an outstanding line up, with a good selection of pieces, played to the utmost by a great group of musicians.
The trio pieces in this recording are so good that I can only hope that Larry will also choose to record one more session with just the trio.

Incredible!.......2002-03-14
that the "Other Side" could be topped! The cover soundtrack
"Ratty Shoes" starts off with newcomer Michael Boyce singing
lead vocals and will bring your heart right back to Ireland. From Paul Moore's "Jig Junk" to the insanely talented John McGroary ( and I truely meant that) on button acordian with "Clearmountain Aire" gets your feet in steppin gear! But you
have to see these guys "live", unbelievable energy is put out
for every show. Whether these guys are jumping and kicking to every tune their drummer Mike O'Callahan is beating his heart
out with those ever so RED sneakers! But this is truely heart at
work with lyrics by Blackthorn! Great work guys! Buy this CD and
listen to great lyrics performed by a band that has proven
themselves once again!

Blackthorn does it again ..........2001-12-27
From Moore's magical storytelling, to the Boyce Brothers' pop/country tunes, McGroary's reels, Seamus Kelleher's' electrifying guitar work and Mike O'Callaghan keeping the beat (and writing a new tune), this record does not have a single weak spot on it. Personally, I have always been a huge fan of Paul Moore's songwriting, but there are no slouches in this band.
Very highly recommended for fans of Celtic music, pop music and/or country music. And if you can, catch the boys live - it's something to see.

Album Description
One of America's most prolific and successful composers, Mrs H. H. A. ("Amy") Beach was one of the first women composers whose works were as highly regarded as those produced by men. Best known during her lifetime for her well-crafted songs and short piano pieces, she was also the first American woman to compose in the larger forms. Beach's 117 art songs span the whole of her compositional career. By incorporating musical ideas from many cultures and musical traditions within a late-Romantic framework, Beach's songs show her skillful craftsmanship and profound understanding of text.Customer Reviews:
