Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-06-08

Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Match.......2007-03-16

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-28

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

4 out of 5 stars A good musical.......2006-07-20

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

Look forward to spotting the band's new album, Horror Show, in European stores on June 25th and in US shops on June 26th. Horror Show is a concept album based on many infamous monsters. Drawing from legend, literature, film, and perhaps even real life. A cover of Iron Maiden's Transylvania was recorded as well, which will be included on a limited edition first pressing of the album on a bonus disc that also contains an exclusive interview with Jon Schaffer and a cover of Iron Maiden's Transylvania! The team of Travis Smith and Danny Miki once again created the artwork for the album which turned out amazing! 2001 release.

5 out of 5 stars Metal and Monsters.......2007-05-15

>Now, I've heard it said many a time that horror movies and heavy metal go together like sin and Satan. I mean it makes sense right? Heavy metal is sometimes very haunting, mostly dark, and shrouded in mysticism and folklore. Horror books (and movies as well) also portray scenes of extreme intensity and darkness, full of suspense and sometimes disturbing depictions. In fact, someone once said that "if heavy metal were to be classified according to motion picture, if would be in the horror section." So it's about time a band created a concept album solely about, you guessed it, classic horror stories. Included are the classic tales of Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Werewolf (among others), which talk of the evil and destructive means of these famous villains, but also the passion and beauty that goes along with them as well. Also, Iced Earth keeps the cheese at a safe distance, and approaches these subjects with seriousness and maturity, not going overboard MOST of the time. Besides the horrific images that Jon Schaffer and Barlow write and sing about respectively, they delve into the passion and emotion that are present in "Phantom Opera Ghost" and "Dracula", while, again, not sounding ridiculously embarrassing.

The musicianship is, to put it in words, exceptional and top-notch. Schaffer rips out crunchy and powerful riffs, that leave you sweating and out of breath, but also, delicately produces melodic and soul-searching acoustic passages (on tracks like "Ghost of Freedom", "Dracula", and "Phantom Opera Ghost") that leave you...well... breathless as well. Matt couldn't be better, and being his last studio release with the band, he really "goes out on a good note." His maniacal screams give you chills up your spine, while his emotional side challenges the listener to sing along and attempt to hit those high notes in tune with his iron pipes. The rhythm section sounds more than solid as well, keeping complex time with the immortal Schaffer, and generating memorable pieces, such as the opening bass part on "Damien" or the intricate and creative drum intro on "Wolf". Everything from the mandatory guitar to the occasional flute fits right in with the powerful music giving the listener ample satisfaction.

"Wolf" opens up on a great note, dropping the listener into talented drums and duel guitar leads, when...suddenly... Barlow screams like a madman, while Jon tears out some heavy artillery. The chorus is especially good, as it contains some insane double-bass{ing} as well as a sing-along vocal part. Matt describes the man turning into a wolf, the temptation and rage that goes along with that, and everything else implied perfectly. Very cool opener. "Damien" (which is one of my favorite IE songs ever) then creeps up, opening with a sweet bass line and some really moving "choir" effects, saying Set! Domino! Set! Very haunting intro, that gets even better when Jon dishes out a chilling acoustic passage, then...BAM! Heavy riffage bursts through the speakers accompanying Barlow's menacing vocals, creating images of evil and sadness all around. The chorus is, too put it simply, AMAZING and always continues to leave me awestruck. Again, Christy rides the double-bass like nobody's business while Matt reaches into his soul and conjures up some memorable vocals. The interlude is also note-worthy and very enjoyable. Flawless to put it simply.

"Jack" is next, which tells the tale of the infamous Jack the Ripper and all he was known for. Without getting too graphic, Barlow puts himself in Jack's shoes, relating his life and adventures throughout his abominable reign. Fast-as-hell (probably the fastest on the album), with an especially notable bass part and Matt's malignant vocals give a dark atmosphere to the song. Also great, is after the interlude, Matt really delivers a haunting scream and very powerful verse. Another gem to enjoy. "Ghost of Freedom" showcases Shaffer and Barlow in their emotional side. It's mostly just an acoustic ballad that never gains momentum until the wicked solo. Very moving, and a nice contrast to the heavy hitters that surround it. While not my favorite IE song, it really adds a lot to the album and must not be overlooked.

"Im-Ho-Tep" naturally and not-surprisingly opens with an Egyptian-like riff that builds into a very driving and heavy riff from Jon. Barlow really sounds good on this one, hitting those high notes perfectly and with ease. It sounds like, during the verses, Matt sang one way, then overlain it with another vocal part. Very cool and noodly solo as well. Another acoustic passage opens "Jeckyl and Hyde", but not for long, because it soon turns into a heavy powerhouse. The chorus isn't that memorable, but still good. A mandolin is used during the interlude which adds some "class" to the song. Really cool time-change too at about 2:35 or so.

"Dragon's Child" opens with a haunting intro with some hushed vocals as well. Soon, Jon once again delivers a driving riff and Matt really sings his heart out. Very good song that will definitely fill an empty void. "Transylvania" is my personal favorite Maiden instrumental and I was glad that Iced Earth did a cover. Better production, a faster pace, and new musicians is all that's really new about this classic. Up the irons! "Frankenstein" is one of those songs that you know right away is gonna be something special. Heavy, opening riff that turns into a galloping verse complementing Barlow's intimidating voice. The chorus is easily one of the best off the album and very catchy. Great listen.

"Dracula" opens with a very soft acoustic intro with some over-the-top sappies from Matt. A tad too passionate but fear not, because after a bit your ears are filled with Matt's soaring voice and Jon's fast hands. To be honest, what starts off as one of the lightest off the album turns into the heaviest. Great stuff. "Phantom Opera Ghost" is also something very, very special. The intro is very entertaining and easy to hum to. Then after a bit Jon's guitar shreds itself some heavy riffs. A chick is brought in to do the female part of the story, and while I usually don't approve, it's acceptable with Iced Earth. No, really it's quite good and not awkward in the least bit. Matt is in his BEST performance here, sounding so much like the Phantom (from what I've seen in the movie), it's scary. The insanely fast acoustic part after the interlude seems impossible. Great closure to this masterpiece.

All in all, you need this album. It's so solid, and very memorable, it can get no lower than a 4.5 star. If you like classic horror movies (like myself) this album will interest you. But then, if you despise horror movies, but love epic and progressive metal that is ever so thrashy, then you won't be disappointed. Easily a top 10-15 NM classic, Horror Show puts on more than merely a "show".

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressed.......2007-01-19

I don't want to bore people with a long elegant review full of analogies so instead, I'll just say that I found this by accident and have been hooked ever since. Very intelligent and memorable in it's delivery along with excellent drumming and guitar work with outstanding vocals.

5 out of 5 stars a Horror Show indeed.......2007-01-08

This is heavy metal at its finest. Great musicianship. It's a concept album based on monsters from dark and old horror movies. The best songs:
Wolf: A great way to start the album, great guitar intro, and chorus
Damien: an epic talking about the antichrist, it starts dark and mysterious, and then gets slow and heavy
Dracula: this song starts very slow and soft and then Barlow screams of blood and vampires while the band picks up the tempo
The Phantom Opera Ghost: a song about the famous play, this song is a great duet with the phantom talking to his love Christine

Overall, a great album

5 out of 5 stars Phantasmagorically Great Fun!.......2006-08-29

This is the first album I've ever listened to, much less owned, by Iced Earth. I was definitely not disappointed. Standout tracks include The Phantom Opera Ghost, Dracula, Jack, and Jeckyll and Hyde--but really, every song is a buffet of awesomeness. It's too bad Matt Barlow left after this album. I can't imagine anybody else doing lead vocals.

If you like your face, you probably shouldn't listen to this CD, as the sheer thrashing greatness will cause said face to explode.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-26

Despite having a larger fan base in Europe than in the United States, Florida headbangers Iced Earth have blessed fans of classic heavy metal with a theme album about monsters! Iced Earth have been around since the early 1990's, but the group became well known in the metal scene almost 10 years later with the release of Something Wicked This Way Comes. The next studio album, sadly the last to feature lead vocalist Matt Barlow, is 2001's Horrow Show.

The albums starts strongly with 'Wolf,' a fast paced onslaught that should have the listener in awe after one song. Damien, an epic song about the infamous son of Satan, is possibly one of the best songs featured. I am a Christian, but I listen to the lyrics in the context of the background on Damien, who is portrayed from The Oman. Other monster's tales included are Dracula, Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper, and the dreaded Phantom Opera Ghoast, which is my favorite song featured on this release. The song 'Ghost of Freedom' is a ballad about the fight to ensure freedom for an entire nation. Schaffer is very patriotic and has a passion for history.

A lot of fans that I know classify Iced Earth's music as a cross between old Metallica and Iron Maiden, with some hints of Judas Priest, Kiss and Morbid Angel. Iced Earth have a very balanced style of music and these guys will definately make your neck sore with their releases. Matt Barlow left fans a wonderful legacy of work with his last full-time performance with vocals. Horrow Show is one of Iced Earth's finest moments, along with Burnt Offerings and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Iced Earth does not disappoint fans with the evil, dark, but fun release, Horror Show.

4 out of 5 stars stunning studio album in creamy stereo.......2004-08-05

This studio album of Weill and Gershwin's LADY IN THE DARK features the lovely Rise Stevens making the role of Liza Elliott her own, with Adolph Green in the role that made Danny Kaye a star in the original production.

This sumptuous reissue on the Columbia 'Masterworks Heritage' label presents the recording in creamy stereo, with the orchestra under the baton of Lehman Engel. Rise Stevens is perhaps the best singer to have played Liza on any recording of LADY IN THE DARK. The trained opera singer lets her hair down for the manic "Saga of Jenny", and yields glowing versions of "My Ship" and "One Life to Live". Also featured among the cast are John Reardon and Stephanie Augustine.

My only qualm about the release is the horrid packaging. The disc is enclosed in a cardboard sleeve at the back of a booklet-style slipcase, leaving the CD vulnerable to scratches and dust (I remedied the problem by putting the CD in a separate plastic jewel case and filing it on the shelf next to the empty booklet case). However this should not deter collectors and musical theatre fans from seeking out this lovely recording.

5 out of 5 stars STELLAR STAR!.......2003-01-03

MISS STEVENS shinesas Liza Eliot in this perfect recording of "Lady in the Dark". [For the first time - with repect to the other artists - the lyrics are pristine!] THE recording? IF you own a 'surround system' - this one IS flawless - just a perfect balance of voice and instrument. [A great restoration job - if only they could do the same to the Lawrence version....]

FOR the collector - get all three recordings currently available - the 1997 London version is the most complete, the Gertrude Lawrence? It's more of a Star Vehicle for Miss Lawrence - lots of dialogue - with really only the two "Liza' numbers - "Saga of Jenmny" and "My Ship" intact - but also well worth the journey.

AS A BONUS - Miss Stevens recording contains the Danny Kaye contribution missing from the Gertrude Lawrence recording - plus his versions of "My Ship" and "The Saga of Jenny".

4 out of 5 stars There IS a more complete recording. . ........2000-12-06

This recording is terrific, but for a more complete recording with much better quality, look for the Original Cast Recording from the Royal National Theatre Production. It's got all the bridging music which is phenomenal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......1999-04-15

Until the definitive full version of the score comes out--with all the bridging material and orchestral interludes--this is probably the most complete of one of the greatest and most charming classic Broadway scores (and probably Ira Gershwin's masterpiece). Rise Stevens was born to play the part, and though at times she gets a bit excessive (especially in the dialogue) her voice is beautiful and confident (a high point is her counterpointing the chorus during "The Best Years of His Life"), and iat times really soars, as in "This is new." Adolph Green is hilarious--it's a great tragedy he never got to play this role on Broadway.

4 out of 5 stars A fun, if abbreviated, recording.......1999-04-02

A nifty performance of one of Broadway's classic scores. The biggest problem is that just about everything is slightly abridged (mostly verses, connecting material, dialogue underscoring and choral repeats--although if I'm reading the vocal score right, most of this would still be interesting to listen to); still, a reasonably good taste of the whole thing. The liner notes also don't really give a story synopsis, so if you aren't familiar with the plot, seek out a summary so you aren't completely confused by what is going on. Rise Stevens' acting is pretty mannered, and she goes over the top vocally every now and then; she seems to be shouting, not singing at the end of "Jenny." Adolph Green is hysterically funny and acquits himself supremely well in "Tchaikovsky." How you'll enjoy the appendix of Danny Kaye's recordings depends on how much you like Danny Kaye--enough said.

This really is a remarkable collection, and anyone even remotely interested in opera is bound to be vastly entertained by it. Almost everything and everyone is here, albeit in small doses: Tebaldi, Pavarotti (a lot), Bjoerling, Bartoli, Sutherland, Solti, Karajan, Troyanos, Gheorghiu, Nucci; the composers are Puccini, Verdi, Bizet, and all the other usual suspects. There are plenty of fine compilation sets on the market, and this is one of the best. One can only hope that it whets listeners' appetites for whole operas. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Always makes me happy.......2007-04-07

I just bought my second copy of this excellent CD because I literally wore the first one out. No matter how I feel before I play this music, I feel joy whenever I listen to it. Highly recommended to beginners and the more experienced opera listeners as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Opera Collection To Own.......2002-01-22

For novices, and beginners who are having their first sample of the fine art of opera, this collection is a must have. In what are the most beloved and well-known operatic pieces, "celebrity" opera stars Placido Domingo, Kiri Te Kenawa, Cecilia Bartoli, Andrea Bocelli, Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavoratti, provide a rich and colorful collection. Among the beautiful soprano arias you will find "Un Bel Di" from Madama Butterfly, "Voi Che Sapete" from Nozze Di Figaro and "Habenera" from Carmen great tenor arias such as the Flower Song from Carmen, Figaro's Aria from Barber of Seville. You will be enchanted with the fine ensembles from La Traviata (the waltz-like Brindisi) the Flower Duet from Lakme, the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore and the very rarely heard O Silver Moon from Dvorak's Rusalka, sung beautifully by Renee Fleming. This cd is a must have for opera and non-opera fans alike. Five star buy. Highlights include the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore with its powerful chorus, Va Pensiero from Nabucco with its message of hope and sung beautifully by the John Aldis Choir, and the lovely "Barcarolle" from the Tales of Hoffman. A beautiful tenor aria rarely performed also is "Mattinata" sung gorgeously by Bocelli. A five star buy. Opera has never sounded more attractive than it does in this high-quality cd.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff!.......2001-04-19

this is a great CD. I got it as a birthday present from someone who knows how much I love opera. Lots of great selections here, sung by great singers. i want to be an opera singer! i lost it in Mexico and now I am buying another one online!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic collection.......2001-03-01

No question - this is an execellent collection of recordings! Rarely does one see this degree of variety and balance in the selection of composers, operas, conductors, and performers in a 2 CD set. If forced to be overly critical, though, I would make 3 points based on my personal preferences: First, I agree with those who feel Pavarotti is featured too often. Personally, I would rather have more Carreras (he appears only once - Donna non vidi mai from Manon Lescaut). Second, while there are some outstanding duets (like the pavarotti/sutherland brindisi from Traviata) and choruses (e.g., soldier's chorus from faust), there are too few ensembles. The Bella Figlia quartet from Rigoletto or the Mia Madre quintet from Figaro would have been excellent additions. Finally, there just ain't enough Wagner (is there ever?). We get only the bridal chorus from Lohengrin and the Ride of the Valkyries. The Meistersinger prize song or the pilgrim's chorus from Tannhauser would both have helped round out the set.

However, to make these additions without adding another CD, some of what's already there would have to go. And what's there now is so glorious, so representative of the great operatic works and (relatively recent) interpretations, I'd hate to see something else get left out.

5 out of 5 stars Love this!.......2000-10-21

I enjoy opera and classical music quite a bit, without being a big opera buff. The selections for this CD are great -- some of my all-time favorites, and some pieces from operasI'd never heard before. I've been enjoying this from the moment I got it. This would make a great gift for someonoe like me.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-03-04

We were quite disappointed with this collection. Although the mix of music is good, the sound quality on several of the recordings was unacceptable and the volume fluctuates. For instance, "Carmina Burana" was either deafening or completely inaudible.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Potpourri.......2000-11-06

This album has some fabulous music on it, all by first-rate peformers. There isn't a disappointing cut on it, and it would be particularly a great gift for a person just embarking on an exploration of classical music in all its glory. It leaves the listener wanting to buy in their entirety all of the works included on the CD, and I don't think that you can ask for much more than that from a compilation. I'm ready for Volume II!

5 out of 5 stars If you could only afford one CD get this one........1998-11-29

All of the pieces are true classics, and there is a varied selection. Most of the pieces are familar works, and the essence of the collection is far above your typical collection of classical hits. If you had to buy this same collection independently it would cost you a fortune. Save yourself the money, and trust that this CD contains all of the finest selections you will ever need to start off your basic collection.

4 out of 5 stars Fine work - reminds me of early Chicago and Colosseum.......2004-01-16

I love rock bands with a horn section. So far I'm aware of four bands satisfying this criterion: Chicago (Live at Carnegie Hall), Colosseum (Live and Valentyne Suite), Rare Earth (e.g.
the fabulous 20 minute Get ready), and the Going's Easy.
This record is rough but beautiful, no overrepeating of motives, many sudden mood swings, and the singer has a very expressive voice that switches from gentle to angry instanteneously. There is hardly a weak moment on this album (I also recommend their debut Horizons). The frantic Borderline is as good as the beautiful ballad Love Magnet; though at a first listening the latter probably appeals more. It's a pity that this band only produced two albums.

5 out of 5 stars greatest show on earth ,one of the greatest cd's on earth.......2000-03-14

the six tracks on this cd are among the best tracks you will hear on one cd.The musical abilities of the band come to the fore on every track on this cd.one of the best british rock cd's to come out in the late sixty's early seventies.Do yourself a big favour and get this cd.

Wow--I really like this CD! The Boston Brass is so tight--it's unbelievable. Each member of the ensemble is extremely talented...there's no room for technical and musical insuperiority here. They play with such vitality, it is really fun to listen to!
