This CD, recorded live at the Bank of Brazil Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro in 1990, captures the creator of the bossa nova, composer-pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), in tribute to his beloved collaborator, poet-lyricist Vinicius de Moraes. He's backed by three-fourths of the Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum (Jobim's son and guitarist Paulo Jobim and husband and wife Paula and Jacques Morelenbaum on vocals and cello) with flutist Danilo Caymmi, son of the Bahian legend Dori Caymmi. In this drumless chamber setting, Jobim's French impressionist influences shine through, from well-known hits "Ela e Carioca," "Insensatez," and "Garota de Ipanema" to the elegant "Valse de Eurydice" from the film Black Orpheus. Rare de Moraes standards like "Voce e Eu" and "Samba do Carioca"--both cowritten by Carlos Lyra--are rendered with a touch of jazz and the feeling of longing referred to as saudade in Portuguese. Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.

How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?

Love and desire.

Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.

Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music.

Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.

I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.

I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.

Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!

Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

Awesome fitting tribute to Brazil's melody maestro.......2005-11-07

This fabulous concert comprises Brazilian melodies, both traditional and those composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with the ample talents of Paulo Jobim, Mario Adnet, and many top Brazilian arrangers and musicians. I was lucky enough to witness a live rehearsal of this concert last spring in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Very impressive! Lush melodies, orchestral arrangements of depth and complexity, the vocal majesty of Milton Nascimento and many others; all of the above add up to a very satisfying musical experience to anyone who loves the rich tasty delight that is Brazilian music.

Tom Jobim Canta Vinicius Ao Vivo.......2000-09-23

The recent release by the Jobim family of this Tom Jobim live concert recorded some 10 years ago in the honour of the Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moreas is a true "must have" for all those who have come to admire the work of Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moreas. For those who are only vaguely familiar with this work, I would argue that this is the occassion to get acquainted better (be prepared though...it'll also get under your skin !) Tom Jobim, together with members of the Banda Nova, at his best ! The album contains the very highlights of the so productive partnership between the former diplomat turned poet Vinicius de Moreas and the giant of Brazilian music. Performed are -obviously- the famous Garota de Ipanema, but also the Carta ao Tom (including the amusing reply message indicating that no more view from the window of the appartment at Rua nascimento Silva 107 in Rio -where most of the songwriting took place- at the Corcovado exists), the Sonata de Adeus and many more comparable jewels. The recording quality is outstanding and the emotional atmosphere of the concert (recorded at the Canecao in Rio de Janeiro) comes across very well. I can only hope that the Jobim family will release more of this kind of material in the near future.

Just Perfect!.......2004-10-12

This CD raises the expectation to be a fine representative of contemporary Brazilian music, given the high quality ingredients: Míucha, Bebel Gilberto (daughter), Chico Buarque (brother), all music and lyrics by The Poet: Vinicius de Morães. And Toquinho, Zeca Pagodinho, Daniel Jobim, and Yamandú.

Listening to it even more than satisfies this expection. Frankly, it is a perfectly produced and appealing CD, that avoids to offer 'clichés'. The songs are a perfect choice, showing the best of Vinicius's contemplative, intense love song lyrics: Tomara, Saudades do Brasil em Portugal, Medo de Amar, Canção de Nós Dois, Cem Por Cento, and others.

The absolute smasher on this one is Teleco Teco, a duet with Zeca Pagodinho, king of samba pagode. It starts with a choo-choo train type of riff by the copper section, which would make any big band leader instantaneously jealous, acccompanied by guitar and percussion. The subtle and perfectly piano, playing Count Basie's play-as-few-notes-as-you-can style gives a beautifl contrast. Courtesy of Cristovão Bastos.
And then there's the contrast between Miúcha and Zeca. Miúcha's warm, smooth voice, calm and controlled, contrasting with Zeca's playful and a bit naughty style. The band maintaining the contrast between up-tempo playing instruments, and the bass and piano that keep maintain their calmness and keep it all together. Apart from the vocals and instrumental performance, this piece is a masterpiece and example of perfect production

The production is perfect, and creating a relaxed ambiance throughout the CD, the band playing introvertedly but perfectly timed and balanced, putting the vocalists in the spotlights. With room for stunning instrumental solos, such as Jessé Sadock's flügelhorn solo in Saudades do Brasil em Portugal. And furthermore a spanish-classical guitar piece by Yamandú ( Valsa de Eurídice), lush and sensual tenor sax in Cem Por Cento.
Another aspect that was smartly done, is combining Brazilian soul (vocalists, band, The Poet, arrangements, production) with a jazz club ambiance: informal but impressive and attracting attention.

And finally there's the CD cover, showing Míucha on Rio de Janeiro's beaches, with the Sugar Loaf and Cristo Redentor in the background. Even if this is a bit stereotype, they perfectly promote what it is: an export product. But a high quality and appealing one for that matter. The perfect souvenir to matar saudades' for who got enchanted by the city and the country. And that's why I last minute-grabbed it in the airport. No regrets, of course.

Hard to find as original record and released now on cd.
The most important thing is the good digital sound without
any strange sound manipulation of the original tapes.
The digipack includes a 10-page booklet with three pictures.
Only the layout of the original gatefoldcover is missing in this
edition. On his last record for Festival Baden arranged and
accompanied his own compositions. He played and sang
his songs with a remarkable voice and relaxed mood.
All the songs are standards nowadays. The record
"Maria D'Apparecida chante Baden Powell" is similar to this project.
