Since Craig Morgan continues to belabor the fact that he's just a regular guy, it should come as no surprise that his fourth album is nothing special. Morgan's voice is pretty ordinary, and the material leaves no country cliché unturned. If he is what he sings, Morgan is a small-town, tractor-driving, church-going, beer-drinking ("now and then"), family-loving, flag-waving, one-woman Southern man. He is, as he sings in "I Am," "just like you, baseball, and apple pie." He's also a guy whose conception of "Sweet Old Fashion Goodness" doesn't preclude an occasional "little bit of yeehaw in the hay," as he sings in the title track. Ballads bring out the best in Morgan, but he has to learn to distinguish between the disarmingly tender ("Tough") and the hokey ("The Ballad of Mr. Jenkins"). --Don McLeese

Album Description

Craig Morgan - Little Bit Of Life. When you look at the Country Music world it is made up of a lot of different types of people but there is no question that Craig Morgan is Country! Craig lives a country lifestyle, he is a dedicated family man with 4 children, a former Army Ranger and an avid outdoorsman. He drives Ford trucks has 4 dogs and his favorite album of all time is John Conlee's Greatest Hits. This new album reflects his passion for a country life. In concert and on his CD's Craig is able to express his emotions and reverence for that life and his fans love that about him. 2005 was a very busy year for Craig Morgan. The release of My Kind Of Livin' marked his 3rd album release. The 1st single from that album " "That's What I Love About Sunday" served notice to Country fans, radio and retail that this was the beginning of something very special. "Sunday" went on to the #1 position at radio and held that spot for 5 consecutive weeks and ended the year as the MOST PLAYED single of the year. The follow-up single "Redneck Yacht Club" continued that pattern and made its way to the #1 position as well. Craig Morgan was one of only 3 artists to have back to back #1 singles during the year and to top it all off Craig was nominated for an ACM award in the Top New Male Vocalist category. Not bad for a kid from Kingston Springs, TN.

5 out of 5 stars "Refreshing".......2007-06-23

This album is outstanding. With all of today's "pop" country, it is so nice to hear a country album that is truly country. This album is a must have for any country fan, as well as any casual fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer.......2007-05-13

I really like Craig Morgan's "Little Bit of Life." It is a wonderful album and I am looking forward to his concert at our fair in August.

3 out of 5 stars Nice country CD.......2007-04-01

I liked especially "Little Bit of Life" which to tell the truth, prompted me to buy since I had heard it over the radio and it kind of grew on me; the ballad "Tough" is excellent and I think that a lot of people will be able to relate to it. "I guess you had to be there" is a good fun song, that kind that ought to be played more over the radio, as well as "Nothin' goin' wrong around here". I am giving it 3 stars only because I would have liked more songs with some more "oomph" in them such as "Little bit of Life" in this CD, but if you are in doubt whether to buy, don't mind me, it's a good CD, go ahead and get it, you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-01-12

Who could not love the voice of this man!! I first heard Craig Morgan at a small venue concert where I had gone to see someone else. I had never even heard of him but when that voice came out...I knew I would never forget him! He is one of the best country singers today and really should get more credit.....I've never heard such a strong and perfect voice! His music is so down to earth and he reaches everyone in his writing...don't miss out on this one!!

5 out of 5 stars Jay & The Americans: COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER; THE BESTO OF JAY & THE AMERICANS.......2007-05-29

I have been in love with this wonderful band's mellow, yet moving sound since 1964, at least. Come A Little Bit Closer pulled me into their wonderous sound, but the song that digs deep into my soul is Cara Mia and of course, This Magic Moment, but my love doesn't stop there...Let's Lock The Door still moves me to dance and sing out. I could go on and on, but
I think that Jay and the Americans is one of the greatest bands, greatest sounds, that ever came out of my generations musical moments.

I'm not a groupy who can tell you their names, recognize their faces, but the distinctive voice of the singer who sings Cara Mia still rocks my world!

If you are a Jay & The Americans fan...this album brings together most of their finest songs, the best music to carry you back down memory lane, and help you remember how romantic and yet playful a male singing voice can be. The only thing I can think of that it is missing is the song, Look In My Eyes Maria...but it even has the old H.I.S. pants commercial on it! Quite a memorable album.

5 out of 5 stars Jay at his all time best........2007-01-10

If you want to relive your days in the 60' use this CD to bring back old memories of what you were up to then. Fantastic, even better than before enhanced by CD quality.

5 out of 5 stars Jay & The Americans CD.......2007-01-05

I loved it. This is something I have been looking for a long time. It is Great.

4 out of 5 stars ALL THE HITS & MORE.......2006-07-05

A DEFINITIVE COLLECTION FOR THE GROUP. SOME OF THE 'B" SONGS ARE
REMINDERS FOR THE NOTION THAT SUCH A SINGULAR VOICE AS JAYS CAN BE RIGHT ON WITH SOME MELODIES YET A BAD CHOICE WITH OTHERS..OVERALL A FINE COLLECTION.

5 out of 5 stars After Twenty + Years; I Finally found It !.......2005-10-09

I can't put into words on how fantastic I think several of these songs on this CD are but I'll try; so here goes !..........Jay And The Americans, was another very good 60s band that definitely left their mark in music history. To me; their vocal harmony's rank up there with the likes of, The Vogues, and, The Everly Brothers, and are one of the best in ANY era. As stated in some of the other reviews about this group; there were two different lead vocalists for the band (One replaced the other) but both are excellent. I owned several of, Jay And The American's, songs on Vinyl or Tape in the 60s & 70s but over time I wore them out so to attempt to remedy that problem I purchased a rare cassette of this Band in the 80s and I was very disappointed with it because in comparison to my previous compilations; the sound quality was terrible. For the longest time I was very tentative about purchasing another compilation by this Band even when I could find one ( which was hardly ever ) but the internet made it possible to find the quality I was looking for and roughly twenty years after purchasing that cassette I purchased this Disc from Amazon and; rest assured; the sound quality on this CD is AWESOME and the songs sound the way I remember them.
Most people my age will remember this great band and their material however if you like this style of music and decide to purchase this CD not being familiar with their songs; play either the lovely, Hushabye, or the beautiful classic, This Magic Moment, first;.....and I'll practically guarantee that you will fall in love with this CD very quickly and that is just the beginning. The beautiful tunes, Walkin' In The Rain, Crying, and, She Cried, are of equal brilliance along with, Come A Little Bit Closer, Cara Mia, and, Let's Lock The Door ( And Throw Away The Key ), and there is much more. I think this is one of the better CDs I own and I own plenty of them. If I had to sum up this collection in one word it would be.....Thrilling !
Final Note: I hope this review is helpful to you because it was the reviews here at Amazon that was very helpful to me and I have finally found the, Jay And The Americans, compilation I was looking for and I have to say that it's about time.... This Band ( And This CD ) are Phenomenal !

Art Brut's sophomore effort works the same ironic, are-they-joking vibe that made 2005's Bang Bang Rock & Roll such a hoot. Eddie Argos's lyrics still sound tossed off the top of his clever head, like he looked around the room and wrote what he saw on a dinner napkin. Whether he's choosing between kissing a girl and turning up the stereo ("Pump Up the Volume") or contemplating his own vanity on "Nag Nag Nag Nag" ("wet trousers in the washing machine/ but I'd rather be damp than seen in jeans"), the words are always the best part of the song. The music, meanwhile, is grand and silly, filled with brash Brit-pop tropes and chunky, Weezer-size guitar riffs.

But the band hasn't found a way around their central problem: The songs lack variety. It wasn't such an issue on their debut because the sample was so limited, but now we know too well what to expect. Their particular formula makes it tough; Argos's spoken, thickly accented delivery doesn't exactly have a vast range of expression, and their punk-influenced emphasis on simplicity limits what they can do dynamically. Only two records in and despite their catchy tunes and obvious talents, they're starting to sound tired. Can they find a way to be something more than just a particularly bright flash in the indie-pop music pan? It remains to be seen, but for now I'll enjoy It's a Bit Complicated's smarty-pants snark--for at least another week or so. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Much like the art movement of the same name, Art Brut are outsiderish, rebellious, punk before punk, and deliciously libertine. Their second full-length is poppier than the first (2004's "Brutlegs"), and with tracks titled "Pump Up The Volume" and "I Will Survive", expect it to be tongue-in-cheek and rancorously funny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars intelligent upbeat music.......2007-07-21

Art Brut's second album, It's A Bit Complicated, hit the streets June 26th. Judging from the five song EP, it won't disappoint the multitude of fans won over by their debut album, Bang Bang Rock & Roll. Known for his shrewd self awareness, front man Eddie Argos and his crew have done it again. Mixing talk/stylized vocals, smart verbosity and catchy melodies, Art Brut will satisfy your longing for intelligent upbeat music. It's A Bit Complicated is deceptively simplistic; its perfectly crisp songs are multi-layered concentrated pop energy.

The EP features "Pump up the Volume," where Argos asks, amidst clever background vocals and guitar riffs, if it is bad taste to stop making out in order to turn up a pop song. "Direct Hit" is a rowdy rock number that you wish the DJ would play instead of the multitude of bad danceable tracks. "Post Soothing Out" is more vulnerable about a failing relationship. It hinges on the wit that characterizes the band's lyrical approach when referencing John and Yoko and remarking that "every day is just like starting over." "Late Sunday" is instrumentally diverse with an appearance of horns and xylophone, displaying the range of Art Brut's creativity and are hopefully an indication of their future as a band. "Nag Nag Nag Nag" is a frenzied tale of "adolescent concerns" from the brooding teenage perspective that recalls youthful rebellion.

It's A Bit Complicated is Art Brut a bit more grown up, maintaining a mature perspective amid a swell of pop rock enthusiasm. These songs will inevitably infect your brain and you will find yourself singing them - with a British accent, of course.

5 out of 5 stars A simple formula (that works over and over).......2007-07-18

I can't really speak to the Franz comparison, but I can say that the Eddie's monologues seemed to have evolved a bit over the previous album and are undeniably relatable; especially to anyone struggling in a relationship (tracks, "Post Soothing Over" and "Jealous Guy" come to mind here). Eddie Argos is an "everyman" in the truest sense, and his lyrics exude an authenticity unsurpassed by any Brit-pop band in recent memory.

On the whole, there are some great riffs here too. Overall, this is one of the best albums of '07 and well worth your time - although a bit brief. If Art Brut continues to release albums keeping in form with the previous two, keep them coming.

2 out of 5 stars Not another one!.......2007-07-04

Hey, a new Franz Ferdinand album? Oh wait, it's Art Brut. Seriously, can it get any closer? I guarantee you play "Pump the Volume" to the average Franzie and he'll swear up and down that it's gotta be them. Even the voice sounds ridiculously alike. It may seem unfair to criticize Art Brut for sounding like Franz Ferdinand (and Bloc Party, for that matter) when Franz borrowed heavily from all sorts of other groups. But the UK is so full of these bands now that someone needs to stop them. Preferrably now because in about twenty minutes I'm going to be sick of all of it.

As the Art Wave continues to roll dominant over the post-punk/garage rock niche, Art Brut does what they gotta do even while they sound like a band just formed last Tuesday. They even have a 2004 single called "Formed a Band," like it was done on a whim based on the artsy post-punk that was on the sharp rise. That they would take the "too clever to be clever" modus operandi as far as this (and on the segments of Bang Bang Rock & Roll I've heard) is the very reason why they have no chance of surviving for much longer. I would mourn them if I would actually miss them. Meat is meat, but well-done ain't rare. It's a Bit Complicated is medium most of the way through, though they find some bloody goodness on parts of "St. Pauli" and "Late Sunday Evening." Even "I Will Survive" manages a rolling beat that chugs along nicely beneath the sharp blasts. Too bad a lot of the rest is stringy and grey.

"Pump Up the Volume" has the same sort of snarky humor that Elvis Costello displayed with his similarly titled "Pump It Up"; but the latter made you act against the instincts of the lyrics and, well...pump it...up? "Volume" floats by with the urgency of drying paint. It's punchy, the almost-bored enthusiasm is marked off, and the rhythm is clearly defined. But Franz should be able to do it better...damn it, I did it again. It's unfair really. If Art Brut came first, I might say similar things about the others. Except that Franz does it better, with more style, and their, ahem, art is more brutish. This is just the slick knockoff. Luckily, I'm not disgusted by it, just disinterested. It zips by with neither imprint nor identity. No one can actually hate this stuff, but it's time to move on to something else at this point. After all of these bands, the next Franz record is going to automatically sound like crap.

Best cuts: "St. Pauli," "Late Sunday Evening," "Post Soothing Out," "I Will Survive," "Blame It on the Trains"

4 out of 5 stars It's a bit too complicated.......2007-06-26

Art Brut are just so darn lovable. Any band that rejoices at their own existance has gotta be special.

That fact is reinforced in their second album "It's A Bit Complicated," which is crammed with more of their exuberant art-punk-poppery. It doesn't stray far from their first album's mold, but them it doesn't really need to -- their energetic, quirky little songs are more than enough fun.

After a bunch of "woo hoo hoo hoos" and a little tap on the bass, the opening song unfurls into a sprightly, punky little rock song. "We've taken our clothes off, in the wrong order/And you're leaving your shoes to make you look taller," Eddie Argos muses, contemplating the perils of teen nookie. "I know I shouldn't/And it's possibly wrong/To break from your kiss/To turn up a pop song..."

Having roped you in with the catchy stuff, Art Brut turns their attention to fast-paced rockers like "Direct Hit" ("Move around like your shoes don't fit!", which are equal parts indie-rock and catchy danceable stuff -- some builds perpetually up to a peak, some bounces all over, and some rushes forward in tight, high-octane blurs.

It winds right down to the brilliant last few songs -- "Nag Nag Nag" is an ideal blend of indie-rock grittiness and dancy exuberance, and "Jealous Guy" sounds like an amped-up version of a classic Britpop song. The album ends, but it doesn't slow at all.

Perhaps the most appealing thing about Art Brut is that they always sound just serious enough to make brilliant music, but not so serious that they don't sound like they're having huge quantities of fun. "It's A Bit Complicated" doesn't change much, but it does continue doing what they do best, with a bit of new polish.

The music basically rides on a wave of blazing bass guitar and nimble electric guitar riffs, tightly wound together into fast-moving melodies. They can make it cycle, blaze, buzz, smash and blast in brief spurts (look at "Late Sunday Evening"). And Mikey B produces some nice drums to ground the rapid-fire guitars, although he's a bit drowned out in some songs.

Argos tends to speak rather than really sing, in his warm, rough voice. For most artists, this would sound like a guy covering an inability to sing, but with Argos it just sounds conversational and quirky ("Sorry if my accent's flawed/I learnt my German from a 7 inch record").

And the songs he sings are full of witty lines and laddish woes -- "I Will Survive" is basically an ode to slob dorm living, and "Jealous Guy" is the lament of a guy feeling threatened by his ex-girlfriend's exes, and her lack of intimacy with him ("You're asleep, I wish I was too/But I can't because I've got something to prove/I tried to wake you with a really loud cough/I accidentally set your alarm clock off...")

"It's a Bit Complicated" doesn't really expand Art Brut's sound, but it's more lovable laddish indie-rock from a band that is almost too endearing. Definitely worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars THE FUNNIEST AND BEST CD EVER.......2007-04-10

Stephen Lynch is the most HILARIOUS guy ever. I laughed so hard I almost peed. This CD is a little controversial- with songs about dating a dead girl, homosexuality, and gerbil sex.
However- it is all AWESOME.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Bit Special.......2006-11-03

This is one you love to listen to and then loan to a friend, put it away for a while, listen to it again, loan to another friend etc.,etc.,......
Crude but funny. Where IS Stephen these days?

3 out of 5 stars Very Funny & Dark Humor!.......2006-08-17

Stephen Lynch is a songwriter and comedic singer who usually performs just with his guitar; a coworker reommended him to me, because I have a warped sense of humor. His songwriting, Musicianship, and epecially his voice are first rate, which makes the contrast with what he's singing about all the more arresting (grin). It's as if your brain is going "How can this angelic voice be singing about this stuff?", like Love Songs for Fallen Priests, or Hermaphroditic Girlfriends (just for Starters.. lol). While listening to his songs, I was struck by the thought that his material is very much like what I might expect from Gahan Wilson or Charles Adams (see), if they had done comedy songs.
That being said, I do feel I need to temper my praise with what I perceive is the album's one shortcoming - it is done as a studio album, and not recorded in front of a crowd. This is not a slam on this album, but more an observation of Comedy Albums in general. I have always found that Comedy Albums that are live, be they Standup or Musical Comedy, do better, and the humor seems a lot more apparent when there are other people laughing along with you.
This is a good early introduction to Stephen Lynch, who I eagerly look forward to both hearing more of, and hopefully seeing. I would however reommend "Superhero", his later album, as a first offering, as it's done in front of an audience, and I think it's a better album.

5 out of 5 stars unbelievably wrong and funny at the same time.......2006-08-11

i really can't get enough of stephen lynch. all of his songs, unfortunately, make you want to sing along. just hope you're not around certain people during certain songs, or you might get rocks thrown at you, but around friends it great!!! the lyrics are catchy and, if you get nothing else from this cd (which is impossible), at least you'll have a way to make people give you weird looks (like if you walk down the street singing about having one ball or your girlfriend that's a guy, that's a girl...that's a guy...). anyway, if you're cool, you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Jazz at it's finest... simply a perfect recording! .......2007-02-05

This is one of those to-good-to-be-true recordings that you will never get tired of listening to. Ben Webster and Oscar Peterson are just amazing together! Really folks, it doesn't get any better than this. A soft, seductive, and serene collection of ballads that will keep your feet tapping and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. I had this one on really loud one hot summer day and at least four of my neighbors came by inquiring about what I was playing. They all made a point to tell me later that they purchased the CD and thanked me over and over again. This is a perfect recording through and through! Out of the just over 400 jazz albums (CDs) I own, this one is definitely in my top 20, maybe in my top ten. Brown (bass) and Thigpen (drums) are, as always, brilliant! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! However, if you only enjoy it half as much, then it still will be worth purchasing it. This is what jazz is all about!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful sounds of jazz.......2006-12-08

Yes, when I hear Webster blow his horn I'm smitten by the sheer beauty of his sound; the way he carresses his mouthpeace and blows his horn somehow produces warm and complex tone, capable of extremely wide range of emotion, impressive in all registers, but always beautiful (without even a hint of schmaltz or kitsch...).

In upper register he sometimes sounds sensitive like a violin, without pathetic quality (jazz) violinists can have in their upper register playing, in lower register my whole body reverberates with his power. And for all this to take place it is not even necessary that he is caught at the peak of his form or in the right company!

Well, at this album he is right there at his peak and, in the company of
impressive range and dinamism of Oscar Peterson and his trusted gang (Ray Brown /b/ and Ed Thigpen /dm/), the things could hardly go wrong.
I'm particularly pleased with "When Your Lover has Gone", which is a great and logical material for such a group of great musicians, but it is interesting to compare Webster's treatment of children song Bye Bye Blackbird, famous in jazz circles for Miles Davis' definitive treatment. Also; pay attention to the "In the Wee, Small Hours of the Morning"...

Although Ben is a star of this occasion and Oscar his trusted sidekick, other two musicians also get their licks and kicks, proving, yet again, how mainstream jazz can be a very powerfull mode of artistic expression.

A great CD!

5 out of 5 stars RELAXED PERFECTION (THEY MADE IT LOOK EASY).......2006-04-02

When your lover has gone is NOT taken too slow--it's tempo is flawless, just like the rest of the album. In fact, I still get goosebumps when I hear Old Ben's mournful cry pierce the quiet of the evening on that gem (this CD is ideal for nocturnal listening, whether you're nursing a drink or romancing that special someone). Jazz should not be judged by the tempo at which it is played. After three or more decades in the business, these guys knew at what tempo to play a song.

4 out of 5 stars Great, fits into whatever you're doing.......2006-03-20

I heard samples of him on the preview section. It was right up my alley in terms of the jazz I like. (I hate fusion.) This blends in with anything you're doing from holding your wife to doing dishes. It's on my Ipod and in heavy rotation in the house.

What sounds like an early-model Casio playing "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" quickly gives way to a classic Perez Prado riff. On top of it all, Lou Bega--born in Germany to a Ugandan father and Italian mother--hoarsely exhorts the floor to "Mambo No. 5." A runaway hit in more than a dozen countries, it's an agreeable trifle, if ultimately not as charming as "Macarena" proved to be a few summers back. Throughout this cash-in album, Bega comes off like a cross between a less clever Tone-Loc and a less inspired Buster Poindexter. If there's a great Europop-Cuban fusion in the making, its standard-bearers will have to come up with more durable trashy fun than this. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for one or two spins.......2007-05-11

This is actually a fairly decent album compared to some the other stuff out there, on the air. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the necessary lasting power to make it much more than a cleaver, one man show, studio designed, self absorbed, novelty CD. His self adoring, ego-manic lyrics get old real fast even if some of them are no worse than another popular novelty song from some years back. Remember "Don't Worry, Be Happy"? Additionally, his lyrical content does nothing to give women the honor and respect they deserve. In fact, his lyrics and whole attitude of the album is very degrading toward women.

Mambo #5 is just another one of those catchy songs that you'll remember for years just like we still remember "Achy Breaky Heart", "Tip-Toe Through The Tulips" by Tiny Tim, the old lady, Mrs. Miller, whose fame was in her whistling of songs and Napoleon XIV with "They're Com'n To Take Me Away, Ha Ha".

Just because we remember certain songs doesn't necessarily make them great. Lou Bega had a catchy stinger and he got all of the mileage out of it in one release. Which may be a blessing in disguise! Oddly enough, I still enjoy this CD every so often for the melodies and rhythms. Then again, I also have the remastered album containing Napoleon XIV's only -dare I say- Top 40 HIT. And remember... Don't Worry, Be Happy!

5 out of 5 stars Mambo Some More.......2007-03-19

This CD is very fun and exciting. The music envokes fun, movement and laughs. What a feel good way to get into Mambo.

4 out of 5 stars Good album.......2006-08-24

I used to line dance to "I Got A Girl" and I always liked " Mambo No. 5" and Lou also does a good song towards the end with a salsa beat to it. A very unique album.

2 out of 5 stars good for kids, I guess.......2006-07-20

The music is way too "synthy" for me. In many cases the "band" sounds like a synthesizer and a drum box. Many of the lyrics are inane. Lou's voice seems ok. My 8 year old likes it a lot.

The songs have a certain pop catchiness to them, but there just isn't much depth there. I have a hard time believing that this is the king of mambo. I certeinly wish that I was as studly as he is.

1 out of 5 stars As bad as the warnings in other reviews.......2006-04-05

Mambo #5 caught my ear when listening to the car radio. It is the only passable song on the CD. I couldn't even listen all the way through the others. Just awful. I paid one cent plus shipping for it used and still feel ripped off by Mr. Bega.

4 out of 5 stars True to the word 'virtuoso'.......2007-03-17

Joe Pass's album was so liked when it came out he went on to record a bunch of sequels. So how does 52 minutes of solo guitar stand up? Joe Pass tackles a program of standards - only "Blues for Alican" is an original. The standards he plays includes some warhorses -- "Night And Day", "Stella By Starlight", "Cherokee", "Have You Met Miss Jones?", and "'Round Midnight". The solo guitar version is sufficiently different enough from, say, Sonny Rollins' "Night And Day", you certainly won't be bored with having another version. The playing itself is a marvel. Pass swings through each song, his notes and clean and perfect, and since he's playing by himself, the differences between solos and verse/choruses are constantly blurred. The main reason I give the CD 4 stars instead of 5 is that the songs themselves blur together a little. "How High The Moon" and "Have You Met Miss Jones?" stand out the most to me, I'm sure everyone has different favorites. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A classic. That's all........2006-11-14

You'll be hypnotized by Pass. Nothing but his genius on solo, hollow-body guitar, transforming jazz standards. When this came out in the 70s, it was unusual. Then, everybody started with solo records. Pass was the first, and it stands the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Real Solo Guitar by the Master.......2006-09-16

Some reviewers apparently don't like unaccompanied guitar. However, to compare this to unaccompanied Miles on trumpet, or unaccompanied Sonny Rollins is a false analogy. No horn can play more than one note at a time, no chords, no bass lines. Only a guitar or a keyboard (or vibes) can do that. It's fair enough to say you don't like the sound of solo guitar. Not everyone likes harpsichord, or sackbut,or theorbo. However, if you do like guitar music this recording is the bible on how to play it "solo". Classical guitar is a different animal. Joe Pass played barely-amplified archtop jazz guitar, and no guitarist I've heard in my life played the "whole guitar" like him, not George VanEps, not Wes Montgomery. What I think is most stunning about his playing is the continous flow of ideas, weaving in and out of chords, single lines, bass, melody, rhythm. As some have pointed out, he had great respect for the melody and overall structure of the American Standard Tunes he played. Even though his substitutions and altered bebop-ish lines were breathtaking, you could still recognize the flow of the tune. There was plenty of speed and chops, but that's not what has moved me since I first heard him 30 years ago. You could tell his playing was largely improvised and every chorus had something new. I heard him play the same tunes many times, live and recorded, and each interpretation was different. He was playing at the speed of thought. More than anyone I've ever heard he sounded as if he could almost instantly transmit a creative idea from his "inner ear" to his fingers. It sounded like it was as easy as breathing. It sounded spectacular. He was the most natural guitarist I've ever heard.

3 out of 5 stars Even a Great Guitarist Needs Some Help on Occasion.......2006-08-18

I am a guitar player. I love to listen to guitar music. However, as you'll read in another of my reviews, I don't inherently love instrumental jazz to begin with.

I thought these standards, while played with great technical virtuosity, would have been more interesting had Pass added some "color" to the tunes by alternating some solos with other instruments such as a piano and sax. Even though I'm a guitar player, I find songs done with a single tonal coloration and singular style to be boring. Imagine Miles Davis doing So What all the way through with only his trumpet...

If you are a devoted jazz lover and/or a devoted lover of instrumental guitar, add a couple of stars. My guitarist friend loves him, but I can pass on Pass.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Virtuoso!.......2006-03-25

Joe Pass' virtuosism as a jazz guitar player far exceeds any expectations you could have. A real guitar virtuoso. The remastering of this classical recording has achieved a real improvement in the sound and it is a pleasure to listen to it. A must-have for any jazz fan or guitar player.

Of course, we couldn't expect time to freeze its relentless path and forever preserve the Welsh sensation Charlotte Church in a chrysalis of precocious youth. And yet, at 15 and now taking bolder steps into expanding her repertory on Enchantment, the soprano remains a marvel of a prodigy. Here, she scours a wider range of sources than on her previous albums. Church moves with breathtaking ease from classic Broadway (West Side Story, Show Boat, South Pacific) to traditional Celtic, film ballads, and even a couple of high-operatic numbers. Church's straightforward approach to the melody of "La Habanera" may not exactly be what Bizet had in mind for his Carmen, but fans will get double pleasure out of the singer's exquisite duet with herself on the haunting "Flower Duet" from Delibes's Lakmé. What's more, there's a greater freedom of expression and sense of how to shape a phrase in many of these tracks--notice how much there is to savor, for instance, in "The Water Is Wide" and "Carrickfergus." It all adds up to a widely varied course, demonstrating the continued growth of a singularly gifted young artist. --Sarah Chin

1 out of 5 stars Bleck!.......2007-05-30

Charlotte has a producing voice, not quite mature, but it's bearable. I don't really appreciate opera unless your name is Sarah Brightman, Hayley Westenra or Holly Stell. Carrickfergus and Somewhere are decent for her voice, but "The Prayer" and "The Water is Wide" is very damaging to my ears due to the fact, her Italian sucks, her range is not wide enough in "Water".

4 out of 5 stars Voice of an Angel!!.......2007-02-05

I enjoy listening to this cd by Charlotte Church! She has such a lovely voice. I especially love listening to Habañera and The Flower Duet as both are sung beautifully by Ms. Church!!

5 out of 5 stars fun cd.......2006-12-29

I love this cd and have had it quite a while. I was just enjoying it again today and thought I'd write a review because I do enjoy it so much. It's just a fun, enjoyable album. Pretty orchestration, a lovely voice, nice to sing along with. Especially at the top of my lungs in the car (alone when no one can hear me!)
I really don't know why one would NOT enjoy this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Good? Yes. Great? No. Over-rated? HECK YES!.......2006-12-15

I bought this CD when I was still in high school, singing soprano I & II in choir. It's not bad but she does much better than even some older kids attempting soprano. I think due to the popularity she gained this poor girl has endured much harsh criticism. True, we can't cut her slack JUST because she is a little girl but on the other hand for someone to sing opera at that age her work IS superb. Whether she's a prodigy or victim of over-ambitious parents & media, she deserves credit where it's due. At least she DID break out as some-what of a mainstream artist & exposed this type of music to those who stereotyped it as fat ladies w/powder-white make-up belting out notes that would shatter glass. Some say the same for Josh Groban who broke into the scene as a mainstream tenor/baritone vocalist. As far as skills & talent, he not the greatest either but many people adore his music. The same credit should go to Charlotte Church.

As far as feedback on the quality...
It's VERY hard to believe the deliverance of her performance. A 15-year-old (even younger on her debut cd) singing songs about love & being able to see the world seems silly. Cracking voice? Yeah, you can really tell she had a difficult time hitting the high note in The Laughing Song because it got all air-y. Honestly, some trained sopranos over-shoot their high notes too & get extremely SHARP so I didn't mind her air-i-ness. I think she did a great job on The Flower Duet though. It still has the same relaxing quality as some other versions I've heard from various movie soundtracks. But compare this to the likes of professionals - real professionals - she's merely tolerable. Try Sarah Brightman if you want to listen to some nice musical sopranos. She even has some pretty remakes of modern songs.

4 out of 5 stars Enchantment Indeed!.......2006-08-20

This CD is simply amazing! However, I am sick and tired of people pressuring her to be someone that she's not! Trying to fit into today's popular music scene, Charlotte has turned to pop, and her career isn't flying well because of it! Her voice is simply amazing for opera, and I will not hear another insulting word about her!

Anyways, the CD is genius! Tonight from "West Side Story" is beautifully sung. Carrickfergus, Habanera, and Bali Ha'i are sung with a hypnotizing beauty. Papa, Can you Hear Me and The Flower Duet are amazing as well!

However, on The Flower Duet, Church's vocals seem strained a bit. The Little Horses is a decent piece, a remake of the standard English folk song. I prefer it straight instead of a varied beat, so that Church's voice could soar on and on.

From my First Moment is a fairly nice song, but The Water is Wide is simply amazing! Her vocals are soaring and mezmerizing!

Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man is NOT the song for her, because she puts a weird accent on the song, like she's trying to sound like a hoodlum! The Laughing Song is something that SHOULD NOT be tried by children, because the vocals are so strained! If I Loved You is a simple yet wonderful piece!

A Bit of Earth and Somewhere are both beautiful pieces, with excellent work from the orchestra.

Overall, this CD is very beautiful! BUY IT!

Album Description

'Whisperings' is a 'best of' collection of fan favorites from David Nevue's first four albums, 'The Vigil,' 'The Last Waking Moment,' 'While the Trees Sleep' and 'The Tower.'

An Excerpt from the Linear Notes...

"With a piano style somewhere between Chopin and George Winston, David Nevue brings melody and heart back to instrumental music. His neoclassical piano stylings reflect his wide musical influences - Clannad, Chopin, Pink Floyd, Rachmaninoff, Renaissance, George Winston and Rush. David's music also reflects his love of literature, quoting numerous influences from C.S. Lewis to The Bible.

David's artistry is demonstrated not only in his music, but in his thematic approach to each album. Rather than creating collections of unrelated compositions, David treats each individual work as but one chapter in a much bigger story that stirs the imagination and carries the listener to a gratifying conclusion."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Whisperings the Best.......2007-02-05

I stumbled onto David Nevue's piano work while surfing the web. This CD is a compilation of (I presume) some of the best compositions from his other CDs. Whisperings is absolutely stunning and outstanding. Unlike a lot of New Age music where you hear it once and then you move on, David's original works tend to stay with you. The melodies are really quite intricate and his playing is superb. I guess the finest compliment I could offer up for this CD is that my 16 year old daughter (who can switch between rock stations on my car radio faster than a speeding bullet) mentioned to me the other day "Hey Dad, this music is really, really nice to listen to!" Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Simply said - Excellent.......2005-10-03

I need not say anymore as the previous few reviews have done justice to it. Simply put, this is an excellent Piano player, composer. His songs are deeply touching and moving. I enjoy listening to it whenever i feel the need to relax. It is highly recommended by me.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-06-17

"Whisperings" is a "best of" collection of fifteen piano solos from David Nevue's first four albums (1985-2000) and two previously unreleased pieces. Nevue's playing and composing styles are pensive and deeply personal, but communicate clearly to the listener in a gentle musical language. Often thoughtful and introspective, Nevue's work tends to be positive without being sugary, and reflects the strength as well as the surrender of profound faith. Nevue occasionally polls his listeners from his website about what their favorite pieces are, and such a poll was done to help in the selection of which pieces to include in this collection (similar polls are done from time to time to help decide which pieces to release in sheet music form). The four albums that are represented are "The Tower" (1992), "While the Trees Sleep" (1995), "The Last Waking Moment" (1997), and "The Vigil" (2000). Although the pieces are not in chronological order, it is very interesting to hear how this artist has developed over the years. Most of the selections are original compositions, but a few are arrangements; those are "A Turn to Grace," which evolves into a lovely setting of "Amazing Grace," "I Wonder As I Wander" by John Jacob Niles, and the classic hymn "Be Thou My Vision." A few of my own favorites are "No More Tears," "The Vigil," "Psalm 77," "Ascending With Angels," and "The Night Season." If you are new to David Nevue's work, this is an outstanding introduction. If you have his previously released albums, this is a really nice "cream of the crop" collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Kept Secret.......2003-04-29

I ran across David Nevue by accident while surfing the net late one evening. After listening to his free mp3 downloads, I purchased all of his CD's. This particular CD is a compilation of his greatest hits. I recommend this CD for your collection. You will not be disappointed. It is outstanding! The music is excellent. David Nevue is the best kept secret in contemporary piano music today. Buy the CD and you'll see what I mean!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-04-28

I've been enjoying David Nevue's music for years. I'm thrilled to see that he's now showing up on Billboard's chart.

Amazon.com essential recording

The Band that Fogerty Built was truly an American phenomenon during their relatively short recording career. Each of their albums, beginning with 1969's Bayou Country, was a Top 40 hit-making machine. Willy & the Poor Boys produced two smashes--"Down on the Corner" (which is about the fictional street group that gave the album its title) and "Fortunate Son," Fogerty's most ferocious political rant. Each CCR LP was a concept collection of sorts, and this one was a tribute to the South, featuring two traditional standards popularized by Leadbelly as well as two instrumentals that made you swear CCR were from New Orleans rather than Oakland, California. --Bill Holdship

Willy And The Poor Boys(1969). Creedence Clearwater Revival's Fourth Album.

Much like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival was capable of shelling out an album every few months and enjoying immense commercial and critical success. With three multi-platinum albums behind them, Creedence Clearwater Revival released 'Willy And The Poor Boys'. In late 1969, 'Willy And The Poor Boys' hit #1 on the Albums Chart and the resulting singles, "Fortunate Son" and "Down On The Corner" became huge hits for the band. As always, CCR's careful blend of Blues, Folk, Country, 50's Rock, and Classic Rock helped the band became sensations in all kinds of music, and led by Fogerty's gravelly anti-pop vocals and wailing guitar, it's no surprise the band has gone down as legends. So, is 'Willy And The Poor Boys' another solid release from Creedence Clearwater Revival, or a career misstep? Read on to find out!

Track Ratings-

Down On The Corner- A big hit, "Down On The Corner" is a fun rocker that blends a catchy bassline with a Country/Rock beat. It's unlikely you won't be humming this to yourself!

It Came Out Of The Sky- You'd think this is Elvis or Buddy Holly, but you'd be wrong. CCR takes a stab at 50's rock, and with Fogerty's energetic guitar riff and humorous lyrics, you can't help but like it!

Cotton Fields- It's hard to believe these guys were from California! CCR blends an interesting mix of Country, Folk, and down-home Southern Rock to create a catchy little number.

Poorboy Shuffle- A harmonica instrumental. While it may just be filler, at least it's interesting.

Feelin' Blue- Much like a song you'd come to expect from B.B. King or Eric Clapton, CCR dishes out a bluesy rocker, and with Fogerty's addictive guitar melody and vocals, it's no surprise this is another winner. "Feelin' Blu-who-who-blue"!

Fortuneate Son- A direct protest against the Vietnam War, "Fortunate Son" spoke to millions after it became a huge hit. CCR adds a shaper edge to the song, and Fogerty's angry vocals remind me of heavier acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd or pre-Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac. It's no wonder this song became a huge hit....it rules!

Don't Look Now- Much like Bob Dylan, CCR blends Folk and Rock on "Don't Look Now", although it seems a little generic along with the other tracks. Not bad, just average.

The Midnight Special- Much slower and considerably quiter than most of CCR's music, "The Midnight Special" is still an energetic Blues-Rock song fulled to the brim with catchy vocals and guitarwork. A good song, just a little slower than most of CCR's stuff, although I wouldn't call this a "ballad".

Side O' The Road- A guitar driven, Fogerty produced instrumental. Need I say more? Fogerty shows why he's one of the 60's best guitarist, ranking right up there with Clapton and Hendrix. In case you didn't know, Creedence Clearwater Revival does have a few Progressive Rock songs on each album, and these last two songs fit the bill.

Effigy- 'Willy And The Poor Boy's longest track, "Effigy" is almost twice as long as every track. Much like the Doors or Iron Butterfly, "Effigy" is a casual mix of Psychadelic Folk Rock, mixed with Progressive elements and excellent musicianship. Fogerty + guitar = bliss!

Overall, 'Willy And The Poor Boys' is another winner from Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of the few bands from the Late 60's-Early 70's that I actually enjoy! Blending the catchy pop hooks of the Beatles and the instrumental talent of Cream, not to mention various influences from 50's Rock and Progressive Rock, CCR never fails to deliver! If you won't good, clean, fun, addictive, and enjoyable classic rock, look no further!

Killer Kuts- "Down On The Corner", "Fortunate Son", "Side O' The Road", and "Effigy".

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO FANS OF CLASSIC ROCK, BLUES, FOLK, AND CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL! THESE GUYS RULE, YOU HAVE TO CHECK THEM OUT!

5 out of 5 stars One of CCR's Most Musically, Lyrically Varied Albums.......2004-04-29

By the time they released "Willy and the Poor Boys" in November 1969, Creedence Clearwater Revival were one of America's top attractions, and one of the most unlikely. By soldiering against the grain of late-60s psychedelia and drug-induced poetry sung by drugged out hippies, CCR (along with The Band) possessed a sound that was original and in stark contrast to the psychedelic revolution, but somehow fate gave them success and made them one of the most popular voices of that generation. This, CCR's fourth album, embodies the magic that made them both popular and artistically dignified at the same time, but it is also an easy contender for the group's most varied release (competing with "Pendulum" for that title).
John Fogerty's songs were as good as ever, and here they advanced forward just a bit in a mix of Southern creoles that seemed to come straight from a laid-back bayou somewhere in Louisiana (though Creedence actually hailed from California), but now CCR appeared to be addressing a generation. The group keeps their down home roots in tact with the undisputed classic `Down on the Corner' which pays homage to music and good times, with Fogerty's references to the individual members of CCR, using the nicknames "Rooster," "Poorboy" and "Blinky." Two left-center (for 1969) selections `Poorboy Shuffle' and `Side O' the Road' add to this feeling, not to mention flawless blues covers `Cotton Fields' and `The Midnight Special,' but Fogerty had deeper things in mind; the group rips through `It Came Out of the Sky,' a rollicking fictional spoof on the mayhem of politics, with references to a mindless Hollywood, a story-hungry media, and Ronald Reagan (or "Ronnie the Popular" as he is called here). But `Don't Look Now (It Ain't You Or Me)' is much more serious, a poetic and frank series of questions posed to a generation, with Fogerty asking "Who'll make the promise that you don't have to keep?" and sadly concluding "It ain't you or me." The album's most famous song, `Fortunate Son' is a testament to the band's unlikely rise to acclaim; it's ironic that one of the best attacks on the draft did not come from a group of hippies, but from a band that embraced an image of blue-collar bayou boys. The album's closer, the unjustly overlooked `Effigy' rings doom and despair, a portrait of the turmoil in America in the 60s, but can apply even to today's dire outlook.
When their previous album "Green River" established them as a successful singles act, critics probably thought there was no way Creedence could top it; but to their pleasant surprise, "Willy and the Poor Boys" took care of that job, but it would surely not be the end; the next year's "Cosmo's Factory" would be even more successful, proving a band could go against the grain and keep themselves creative and original.

5 out of 5 stars Meet Willy And His Poorboys!.......2002-06-11

By this time(1969-70), Creedence Clearwater Revival, under the leadership of John Fogerty was nigh on unbeatable in the singles charts(and their albums were pretty darn good, too). WILLY AND THE POORBOYS is an album based around the concept of a street corner band led by Willy (John Fogerty?). Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug 'Cosmo' Clifford, naturally, portray the Poor Boys.

DOWN ON THE CORNER - An introduction to Willy And the Poorboys. Down home funkiness by a band that strangely had never been down south.Great harmonies on the chorus.

IT CAME OUT OF THE SKY - A humorus rocker of a something falling out of the sky, landing on a good'ol boy's farm and the American public's knee jerk reactions to it. Love the line, "And Ronnie the popular said it was a Communist plot"!

COTTON FIELDS - Country rock version of the Leadbelly folk standard. This version walks all over the Beach Boys' attempt at it around the same time.

POORBOY SHUFFLE - Willy and crew having a washboard jam session.Makes you think it is a real band on the corner playing for pennies and dimes.

FEELIN' BLUE - Rock blues number with a swampy kick. Bass is low and muttering, courtesy of Stu Cook.

FORTUNATE SON - Raging anti war stormer about how the wealthy seemed to be contributing less to the Vietnam war effort than the poor, in men and money. You can feel the scorn and fury directed at the 'fat cats'in Fogerty's voice. Still packs a punch over thirty years later.

DON'T LOOK NOW - Pure country ditty basically stating, "If you want something done,do it yourself; 'cause no one else is gonna do it".

THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - Another Leadbelly tune that Fogerty makes all his own. This is down south folk rock with a swamp rock twist and the harmonies are spellbinding.Good to sing along to.

SIDE O' THE ROAD - Blues shuffle jam session that shows the band's chops off to great effect.

EFFIGY - This could be about the Vietnam war and the power of the protest movement: "Silent majority weren't keepin' quiet anymore!" Whatever the case, this is a powerful way to end a powerful album. A must for your collection!
