Jersey boy, sometime actor, longtime rapper Redman ends to a five-year album hiatus with Red Gone Wild. "Thee Album," as its subtitle suggests, slings all the comeback bravado it can. From the opening bump of "Fire," Redman rolls out his own red carpet, strutting the whole way. "Rite Now" swipes and recalls the thumping throwback funk Redman first exploited well with 1994's Muddy Waters, and "Freestyle Freestyle" adds a heavy shuffle to that. Throughout, Redman and a bevy of guests saunter through backing tracks built around Marvin Gaye, Millie Jackson, Curtis Mayfield, Rick James, and Bob Marley (the viscerally stupid and strangely arresting "Blow Treez"). In one of the album's wilder moments, "Sumtn 4 Urrbody," rappers Blam, Runt Dog, Ready Roc, Icadon, and Saukrates drop in to party for a verse each: suddenly, the line "Hair on my chest look like taco meat" never sounded so good. Lines that doggone dirty have stapled seams through the beats of every Redman record since 1994's Dare Iz A Darkside, at least. But Seattle producer Vitaman D cooks up the album's wildest cut, namely the abysmally thick pulse gunning beneath the ironic silliness of "Pimp Nutz." To his continuing credit, Redman's got no problem bringing more talented collaborators into the studio and letting them loose. After all, he himself was long ago gone wild. --Jason Kirk

This album reminded me of the Muddy Waters album. If you like that. then you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars (4.5 stars) Redman's Bak Inda Buildin!.......2007-06-26

It's been years since we had the pleasure of hearing a solo Redman joint...especially one that's worth listening to! The last good album was 1998's Doc's Da Name, although the dismal album Malpractice was released in 2000. But just listening to the intro track "Fire," it becomes clear that Red Gone Wild is the real deal. The album has the feel of a mixtape, but without the yelling deejays or the redundancy of tracks that serve no purpose. Even though "Bak Inda Buildin" clocks in under 3 minutes (just like "How U Like Dat" later in the album), it still delivers the energy we've been accustom to hearing from Redman and segues into the equally hyper "Put It Down" and "Gimmie One." "Sumtn 4 Urrbody" features virtual unknowns named Blam, Runt Dog, Ready Roc, Icadon, and Saukrates showcasing their best licks and it's amazing that the track still stands at less than 4 minutes. The Scott Storch produced "Freestyle Freestyle" is an enjoyable track with the feel of a true freestyle with its uncomplicated background and lyrical veracity. Veteran Def Squad members Erick Sermon and Keith Murray regroup for the convincing posse cut "Walk In Gutta" while R&B newcomer Melanie Rutherford [...] gives an impassioned hook for the indelible melody of "Wutchoogonnado." "Blow Treez" is a well-performed collabo that features partner-in-rhyme Method Man and Ready Roc. "Merry Jane" is a fun, entertaining tune that pairs Red with Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg. "Dis Is Brick City" and "Rite Now" both showcase classic Redman while "Hold Dis Blaow" rocks an infectious beat that makes it one of many standouts on the album. He closes with the recurring "Superman Lova" featuring Hurricane G and Melanie Rutherford (it's presented as two connected tracks with the same title) and the tenacious "Suicide" that's embodies all the intensity that Redman has been known to display from time to time. Red Gone Wild personifies a rapper whose talent far exceeds most others in the industry today. Redman's future as a rapper is proven with Red Gone Wild, and he'll never have to worry about losing his appeal if he keeps putting out albums like this.

5 out of 5 stars YEAH!.......2007-06-20

this album is SOLID from beginning to end, best Redman album since Muddy Waters.

5 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2007-05-30

I don't listen to rap music but I can't stop listening to this album. It's got like msg or crack or something in it to make you keep wanting more, listening to it over and over. From the beats through the vocal layering and party atmosphere to the incessantly repetitive lines on choruses prettymuch every song on it is better than any rap single released in the last couple years.

4 out of 5 stars GILLA HOUSE!!! .......2007-05-30

After making everybody wait quite a while, Redman is finally back and drops another solid album with "Red Gone Wild." Keeping it funky but not quite as grimy as his past releases, "Red Gone Wild" showcases Red's infantry of friends almost as much as Red himself. Most of the guest artists serve their purpose, however, and everything blends together rather seamlessly. Over and over again, Red and his crew chant "Gilla House!" over a plethora of prototypical Def Squad beats. When Red is at his best is when he spits the grime we've come to love from him, as on the intro track "Fire" which is one of the album's highlights.
Although "Red Gone Wild" suffers from the usual amount of filler most Redman albums have, it still holds its own as a solid "comeback" release from one of hip-hop's most consistent veterans.

    Product Description

It was a simple formula, bring together one of the East Coast's finest rappers with some of the most clever track masters in Hip Hop, then add in a stellar DJ, and the results are bound to be exciting. "Funky Technician" was just that, an excellent album of battle rap with Lord Finesse simultaneously claiming and proving his immense skills over a set of funky backing tracks that used the familiar James Brown blueprint, but delivered it with unobtrusive class and innumerable displays of deft turntable wizardry. DJ Premier, Diamond D, Showbiz, and DJ Mike Smooth himself all contribute classic tracks, meanwhile, Lord Finesse is dropping rhymes to rank with Rakim and Kane. For example, on "Just a Little Something" with a raft of prizewinning multi-syllables: "Now I'm the constabulary, great in vocabulary/I'm no joke, when up against any adversary." Finesse is fresh and imaginative on nearly every line, and invites A.G. (aka Andre the Giant) for a guest spot on "Back to Back Rhyming." There were a lot of great rap records coming out of New York around the turn of the decade, though, and Funky Technician" never got the attention it deserved. Now after being out of print for years, this masterpiece album is finally re-released in it s full glory and even includes the 12" version of "Baby, You Nasty" (produced by DJ Premier), never before available on CD. This is a must-have for any fan of classic golden-era Hip Hop.

Responsible for many influential sides, the Wild Pitch label was at the vanguard of the second-generation hip-hop indie labels. The label first made its reputation with sides by DJ Mark the 45 King and the Flavor Unit, including Latee's "This Cut's Got Flavor." By the '90s, they had moved on to representing left-of-center acts like Main Source, Lord Finesse, and O.C. Before selling the label in 1994, Wild Pitch had big hits from the Coup and Ultramagnetic MCs. Among the seminal sides included here are Ultra's "Raise It Up," Lord Finesse's "Funky Technician," Gang Starr's "Words I Manifest," O.C.'s indomitable anthem "Time's Up," and no less than four gems (including two rare ones) from the legendary Main Source. This is a truly fine overview of the late '80s and early '90s underground. --Jeff Chang

There's not a dud on this comp. You'll be amazed and entertained from start to finish. Anything less than 5 stars is underrrating this masterpiece collection of classic underground hip hop. I can't wait for the second volume.

3 out of 5 stars Old School, Underground, Classic.......2001-04-06

All in all, it's a mediocre disk, but it's got a few classics on it, that make it worth the few bucks. I mean, where else can you find Live At The Barbeque (Nas's first track) on CD? Huh? And tell me you don't remember when Lookin' At The Front Door use to be the joint (Woo-woo, woo-woo-woo, woo-wooooooo)! Who remembers Hush-Hush tip? N-Tyce? Pre-Venom days? And, yup, that was Method Man on the hook. Even the corny tracks like Blue Cheese, have a bit of nostalgia to them. I gave it 3 stars, because most of the songs are forgettable, but it does have those few jewels that make it a worthwile addition to your collection. Hell, if one of my boys in college hadn't got me for mine, I'd be listening to it right now!

      4 out of 5 stars classics.......2001-04-06

I'm not that down. But I can recognize classic hip hop and all these songs are and I'm enjoying it alot. "Looking at the front door" is a little played for me but it's still good. All these other songs are just aghh i don't know. This is the rap that an average rap fan doesn't hear alot of, but really wants to. I promise you. "Live at the BBQ" is great, Nas's debut on a record, and he rips it up. I think he was only 17 or so when he wrote those lyrics and not much older when it was done. "Court is now in session" is also, Biggie got his beat for "Friend of Mine" from this and oh these are classic songs. get it. There is Kool Keith before he was really annoying like he is now. You'll enjoy it i promise.

It may not be "real" or whatever to get a compilation like this but so what. great songs all on one CD... SOmething for everyone. it doesn't get 5 stars because that'd be weird to give a compilation 5 stars, but almost all these songs are definitely 5 stars and all the rest are 4.. get it get it get it

DuOud's Wild Serenade hammers home the fact that the oud is one of the most important instruments in the world. The word itself means "wood" and this pear-shaped, fretless, short-necked lute--the ancestor of the guitar--is what gives the music of the Middle East its characteristically plangent sound. But what DuOud do with the oud is altogether more interesting. For in this group, two North African lute players team up with a violinist, a cellist and a percussionist and plunder the gadgetry of the studio to create effects which are sometimes Spanish, sometimes North Indian and sometimes pure Paris disco. The 11 tracks on this CD are a superb showcase for what the oud can do when it's in the hands of masters like Smadj and Mehdi Haddab: they can make it sound like a lone voice in the desert, or like the central figure in a swirling studio mix, but their virtuosity is never swamped by electronic effects. The Congo meets Algiers meets Delhi meets Paris: don't try to pin anything down, just let their heady momentum carry you along. --Michael Church

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for their live performances.......2005-04-27

I went to the Viva La World concert in Central Park a couple years ago to see Natacha Atlas perform. Aside from her, I wasn't familiar with any of the other artists who performed. DuOud stood out to me- they have amazing sounds (mixing the more traditional sounds of the oud with electronic beats and sound effects). They really seemed to enjoy themselves on stage and playing their music. It's just two guys, their ouds, and a laptop with all the samples and background tracks in concert. I was very pleasantly surprised to find other exciting artists at this free concert in New York City. I don't actually have this album yet, but if you ever get a chance to see them live -- go!

Hypnotic, electronic loops in the background, beautifully placed/extremely well-played oud/violin/etc. on top... what more can you ask for? World peace maybe. But that's a bit of a stretch, innit. Heheheheh. Heh.

What you might call Middle Eastern Fusion. Or something. I don't know. It's bloody good, though.

"First impressions are everything," says multi talente Hip Hop artist and songwriter CONTAC. He should know. His much anticipated sophomore album "EEYEAYA," an independent project, is in the works as we speak.

Being that he was born on the east coast (Connecticut), raised in the Midwest (Minnesota), and dirty south rooted from Arkansas, his unique sound and lyrical weaponry is guaranteed to Blow-up. Most recently, CONTAC worked on collaboration with Atlanta's own Lil Jon & The Eastside Boys (BME/TVT Records). The song "Do Somthin" is a very crunk up-tempo song that is ready for action. Also he took a trip to California, linked up with Kurupt from Tha Dogg Pound on a song called "What's Pappin" that compliments the two MC's styles very well. CONTAC has proven that his appetite for the mic is always on starve mode. "To be or not to be."

Overall there is nothing missin from this album. The lyrical skills by all are dope and like I was sayin earlier the beats are our favorite they've ever done.

4 out of 5 stars Ultra Still Funky For The Ninety Three (4.5 Stars).......2006-08-14

Two albums under their belt, Ultramagnetic MC's drops their third album together called "The Four Horsemen". On many levels, this can be neck and neck when compared to their classic debut "Critical Beatdown", because they still keep things funky as usual. I haven't heard their second album "Funk Your Head Up" yet, so I really can't say if it's a step up from that album or a step down from that.

There are a few major changes on this album than their first. The obvious change is Ced Gee's voice. It's gotten way deeper than it was on "Critical Beatdown". At first I didn't even notice it was him rhyming until about half way into the album. It's not a bad thing, it actually sounds better. Second is Kool Keith and Ced Gee's rhyme style has changed. It is real hard to notice at first, but listening to this multipule times, you'll pick it up.

As for the songs themselves, they're near perfect. Kool Keith aims at other rappers who overuse old musical samples from legends saying "I don't need Zapp, I don't need Anthrax". Ced Gee would pull a sequel to Critical Beatdown with his song "Delta Force II" which I think is better than the first one. Keith and Ced would get togther to do some tracks on the album together. "The Saga Of Dandy, The Devil, & Day" is a dedication to the Negro Legue baseball. They also manage to keep things funky with the songs "Two Brothers With Checks" and "We Are The Horsemen" and the sex cut "Big Booty".

Most of the production is kept within the Ultramagnetic fam. Some of the tracks were produced by Godfather Don, who does the last verse on "Raise It Up". Moe Luv does a good job scratching in the samples in most songs, and he gets his own solo cut on "Adventures Of Herman's Lust". TR Love holds down the piano and the percussion which makes a nice addition towards the album.

The only small problem that I have is the Kool Keith song "One Two, One Two". I personally just wasn't feeling that one.

Overall, I enjoyed this album. Each member doesn't dissapoint on this album. Unfortunately, this was the last album that they made before the group split up, and all those basement mixtapes surfaced. Like I said before, I believe it's on the same level with "Critical Beatdown" but with a more '93 flavor. If you're a Kool Keith/Ultramagnetic fan, I recommend this one to you. Unfortunately this one is out of print (like everything made by Wild Pitch Records). I was able to find a copy for less than $10, good condition, but to some people, it's worth the search.

          Lyrics: A
          Production: A+
          Musical Vibes: A+
          Overall A

My favorite Tracks: Two Brothers With Checks (San Franscisco, Harvey), Raise It Up, Saga Of Dandy, The Devil, & Day, Ced Gee (Delta Force II), Don't Be Scared, Time To Catch A Body, Big Booty

5 out of 5 stars their best album to date.......2006-01-28

they defenitely stepped their game up on lyrics, production, and subject matters, like for example the song Saga Of Dandy The Devil, The Devil & Day, they talk about negro league baseball and thats very original cause nobody else rapped about that, very original, but to me the stand out tracks on this album to me are raise it up and see the man on the street just because those are my favorite songs, but the rest of the songs are good, its just those two that are the best songs on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Ultra always slammin.......2004-01-26

This album shows Ultra moving forward in time once again. Ced GEe Delta Force Two is just as funky as the first one. this whole album is a must have for the old school rapp.

5 out of 5 stars legends of hip hop.......2002-04-17

Ultra comes back after a lukewarm acceptance from fans from there "funk your head up" album.

On the production tip each track hits hard and funky in the pocket. No recycled break beats or loops on this album. All the grooves are funk chops, brought to you by Ced-Gee, T.R. and Dj moe Love.

on the lyrical tip Ultra is back on the space scientific abstract street flow!

Kool keith is once again innovating on rhyme schems like on "one two one two" where he says each word twice over a funky track.

Ced-Gee returns and gets "superbionic" on tunes like "we are the horseman" and "bring it down to earth" with an off beat flow that unicates every other syllable.

As a whole this album is a classic return to true hip hop with dope beats and boasting and bragging rhymes that every true mc fan loves to hear.

          Peace!

5 out of 5 stars Punk to Tuva...a leap of epic ...well...as big as the plains (maybe).......2005-07-26

I grew up listening to British and Australian garage and punk, amongst other `alternative' styles of music...and one day I heard a busker singing in a strange throaty whistle sound with background music. I remembered the term `Tuva' from his sign and pretty much moved on.

Years later I came across this album in a tiny independent music store in Melbourne (Incidentally where I used to purchase other styles of music) and the word `Tuva' resonated. I bought the CD. I listen to the picture generating tracks at least once a month and travel to the plains every single time.

No CD generates such an amazing visual experience in my experience (and I mean it). If you can find it...buy it, no matter what style of music you generally listen too.

            5 out of 5 stars Astounding!.......2004-06-25

I have to tell you, I bought this CD thinking it would just be some weird music, and it is weird. But it's SO much more than that. It's absolutely beautiful. It's astounding. I'm not an expert on throat singing, but from a listener's point of view it seems to be a way for a single voice to generate entire chords -- three or even four notes at a time. Whistling sounds, groaning sounds, all sorts of sounds you've never heard a human being make. But with a thousand years of tradition these weird raw materials have been turned into an incredible kind of music that sometimes sounds like the blues, sometimes a little like demented bluegrass, sometimes like folk opera, and sometimes like the singing of another species entirely. All of which would be amazing enough, but the most amazing part is how enjoyable it is to listen to. I bought this CD to weird-out my friends, but I find myself listening to it alone as I work, or just listening to it and doing nothing. It's mesmerizing. There's a nice fat little book with it that appears to be full of all sorts of interesting information about the Tuvan tradition, but to tell the truth I haven't read it. I'm too caught up in the music. Buy this CD and expand your horizons. You'll never listen to music the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars The best available intro to Tuvan music (if you can find it).......2002-06-12

I've got several CDs of Tuvan music, and this one is the best introduction for someone new to the subject. Tuva is a small region in Russian Asia, nestled in the mountains between Siberia and Mongolia. Herders who got bored spending their days in the countryside on horseback developed throat-singing, in which a singer can sing two notes at once, a low drone and a higher melody. The high part is produced from the overtones of the low note. The style began with a cappella singing, then was extended to include music on banjo- and violin-like instruments, with a rhythm like American cowboy music. This CD includes plenty of songs by Kongar-ool Ondar and Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, two of the first Tuvans to tour America. There are several examples of various styles of hoomei (the Tuvan word for throat-singing--the English spelling of this and ALL Tuvan words varies from album to album), including by an 11-year-old student of Ondar's. There are examples of modern variations on Tuvan music, including the title track from the "Fly, Fly My Sadness" collaboration album between Tuvan group Huun-Huur-Tu and the Bulgarian women's choir Angelite. And there is Paul Pena, the blind American blues singer (and writer of Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner") who learned throat-singing on his own and won an award at a Tuvan throat-singing festival, as chronicled in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Genghis Blues". (The CD suggests that it includes a live version of Pena's award-winning performance, but doesn't explain how he could be playing two guitars at once.) My only complaint with the CD is that there is too much of Mikhail Alperin's Tuvan-Russian hybrid projects (4 tracks), and not enough traditional Tuvan songs done with instruments, especially the banjo-like doshpuluur. A perfect Tuvan compilation would include the caravan-drivers' song ("Tying Siirtuktiilerining Iri") and "Ches Bulungum"; for those, look for the CD "Tuva: Voices from the Land of the Eagles".

What makes this CD a better choice than "Land of the Eagles" is the 64-page book on Tuva that is included in the "Deep in the Heart" package. It provides an introduction to Tuvan history and culture, important notes on cuisine (like a recipe for blood sausage, and how to prepare and serve the honored dish "Fat of Lamb's Tail"), and simple explanations of how to throat-sing. For example, to perform the whistling sound of the sygyt style of hoomei, put your mouth in the position to make the sound "ur" as in "urn", tighten your throat, and do a Kermit the Frog impersonation as you sing "ur-ee, ur-ee". Now go practice.

5 out of 5 stars Astound Yourself and Your Friends!.......2001-06-24

I first heard Tuva throatsinging while watching the documentary "Genghis Blues", the story of blues musician Paul Pena, who, incredibly, taught himself this complex singing style. He then traveled to Tuva to learn more about it in the land where it was born. I immediately fell in love with throatsinging and logged on to Amazon to see what cds were available. I wanted a comprehensive guide to the styles and variations of Tuva throatsinging. This cd is truly amazing and the book that comes with it is very helpful in laying down a basic understanding of the sound and its complexities. It takes you through each track explaining styles and instrumental accompaniments and variations. Lest you think this cd may be boring and pedantic, I hasten to add that my first response to the cd was one of sheer exhileration. There is a joy to the music that invokes riding fast in the wind, laughing with the freedom of movement. The spirit and humor of the Tuvan people come across in every track.

I LOVE THIS CD. My cat, on the other hand, fled to the back of a closet when he first heard Kargyraa.
