I like this CD. It kind of has a "new age" sound to it. She reminds me of Enya.

Belgian singer Maurane has always flirted with Jazz and world music, mixing it up with what you can call classic French pop. Her deep, silky voice fits that genre very well. She admits than more C.Dion alikes were trying to outsing Celine, less she was showing off her own voice to take a more melodic, emotion driven path. On her latest release, she pointed out towards light world music arrangements, which desappointed French critics, who could not find any radio hit on the album, even not the song written by Francis Cabrel ("Qui à part nous?"). The fact is, as Maurane reckons, she was not trying to sell but to record something she was proud of, and she reached her goal. This will take you by the hand on a quiet journey between emotions ("L'homme qui m'a le plus manqué", dedicated to her late father), reflections on the world wherabouts ("Bleue", "Il neige des e-mails") and humour ("Jean Philibert" dedicated to... her cat). For those learning French, she has a clear, understandlable voice, and her lyrics are often poetic. She is a confident yet unpretentious singer. Maurane could have become an international star, she decided to remain in her kitchen making music with a group of friends while taking care of the kid. She remained in Brussels where she feels at home instead of heading Paris, and her simplicity, sense of humour (that she shows even more on stage) and talent were enough to get her a place in the big parisian league. Discover her you will not regret it.

Who put this together?.......2004-03-19

This is not NOT the best of Jose Carreras. Jose Carreras's best singing was of Verdi in the mid-70's. That is represented by only one track on the Cd, Ah, La Materna Mano... which is excellent.
First comes the tracks from Aida. Since when was Jose Carreras considered a difinitive Radames? Perhaps the fact that Jose Carreras never sang Celese Aida in concert might give us a clue as to why it shouldnt be here. He only ever sang it in the 2 productions of Aida that he sang in (79,80)and he recieved poor and mixed reviews for both. Point blank his voice isn't heavy enough.. and it shows. The tracks are not bad, but they are not "Very Best" or even close.
Then Palliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana. Carreras never sang Rusticana onstage! And in these tracks he forces tragically. The Palliaccio non son is one long shout.
The second Cd has some weird choices. Don Carlos is okay... but just okay nothing special. The La Fleur is not from his Karajan recording in 82 but from an obscure 85 recording where he forces and blasts the top b flat at the end. They then have him singing Salut, from an opera he never sung at a time in his carrer where he could barely sing a high C (and it shows.) All of the proceeding tracks are recoreded in '85 only 2 years before his complete vocal break down and bout with leukemia. he does not sound at his "VeryBest" just, "sort of okey." if you want his very best check out The Golden Years or The Great Carreras or many other Cd's that are more favorably put together.

A major disappointment........1999-11-10

I bought this recording based on the musical selections (some of my favorites) and the reputation of Gardiner. I am sorry to say that I was sorely disappointed. The recording lacked the clarity one would expect from a CD. The choral singing lacked the dynamic sensitivity I would have expected and the diction was very poor, particularly the German.

HER BEST ALL AROUND CD.......2001-04-21

Although she had made a few records before,MAURANE really established her reputation by appearing in a version of STARMANIA,the most famous FRENCH musical.Since then, she has earned quite a reputation as a live singer.This cd is really a portrait of her;IL NEIGE DES E-MAILS is of course about the joy of emailing throughout the world;JEAN-PHILLIBERT is actually her cat;L'HOMME QUI M'A LE PLUS MANQUÉ is her father.Excellent production and a good choice of writers and composers have managed to make this her best album to date.Be warned however ,that MAURANE really comes alive when she sings live.She is some kind of a girl as would say her colleagues ,who knows she can reach the highest peak of a mountain.Thank GOD there are artists like MAURANE.

if you likes others maurane album, be sure that you will appreciate this one. Particullary, "Il neige des e-mails", who talk about email chatting, "Jean-Phillibert" a lovely vocal song about a cat, and "l'homme qui m'a le plus manqué", "La chqnson de la pluie", "Pour les maes, pour les hommes", "Qui a part nous"... I'm sure that the CD will be a great success.

This recording by a high quality boys and men choir is one of the best available, and closer to Tchaikovsky's intentions than most. Tchaikovsky wrote the Liturgy to be performed in the Russian Orthodox churches, which would not include women in their choirs.

Most choirs do not have the boys available to sing this difficult work, so they use women. In most cases this is a disaster as the women are allowed to use their full voices and they overwhelm the piece, blowing the men out and introducing a tamber that Tchaikovsky never intended. This is especially problematic in the upper registers.

Here we have the rare pleasure of well trained boy singers instead, and the difference is obvious and welcome. Aside from the occasional small problems of a smeared consonant from inexact rhythm, the singers and the conductor give a very good, sensitive, emotionally committed, and artistic interpretation of Tchaikovsky's work.

The only notable issue is the lack of Deacon and Celebrant parts, which would have been sung if the piece were performed as a true Liturgy in an Orthodox Church.

My other favourite recording of this piece, which I sang on, is by the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York. While women replace the boys, a big emphasis was placed on singing as much like boys as possible for women with some success. While boys would have still been an improvement, the piece remains well within the spirit and intentions of Tchaikovsky. As the recording includes the Deacon and Celebrant, as well as the traditional first antiphon which would have been sung in any religious performance of the Liturgy, it is in some ways more true to Tchaikovsky's intent.

I think that both recordings deserve to be heard, far more than the score available with women blasting away operatic high notes.
