Jesse Malin segued from a decade as frontman for NYC's D Generation, a band whose glam-metal pose was as ironic as it was misunderstood, to this reincarnation as shrewd, stripped-down Gotham singer-songwriter. Comparisons to Bruce Springsteen have already been floated, but Malin's sensibilities here are as subtly shaded and introspective as the Boss's are broad and declamatory. Midwifed by producer/ex-Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams, Malin's affection for the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Steve Earle is obvious, but filtered through a savory, pop-conscious mélange of musical textures that evoke everything from Motown to Tex-Mex. Malin's lyrical sense is no less evocative, with simple lines conjuring up worlds of possibilities. It's a debut whose heartfelt country-by-way-of-Delancey-Street songs may bolster notions that irony is indeed dead in the post-9/11 world, but also one whose honesty of voice and purpose ensures the wake will be brief. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The Fine Art of Self-Destruction features 12 original songs written and sung by Malin (ex-D Generation). Ryan Adams (Whiskeytown) contributes guitar and vocals on almost every track and Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole, Smashing Pumpkins) contributes background vocals. The album was released on October 22 in the UK where is has already garnered critical acclaim in Q (4 *'s), NME, Mojo and Uncut (album of the month for November), among others. The London Saturday Times said, "(Ryan) has turned producer on a spectacular debut by his New York friend and neighbor, Jesse Malin. Adams reckons that Malin is a 'genius'. Adam Duritz of Counting Crows says that this is the best album he has heard all year. Believe the hype. Malin writes vivid songs with killer tunes and sings them with scary conviction. There is simply nothing more than you could demand from a great rock record. Buy it. 5 out of 5 *'s."

4 out of 5 stars Solid debut..........2007-02-14

he sounds more like Westerberg or Springsteen these days, which is a far cry from the Cheap Trick/Ramones D-Generation days - but the solid songwriting is still present and accounted for...

4 out of 5 stars Come On People.... .......2006-09-05

The reviews here are more about Ryan Adams than Jesse Malin. If you hate Ryan Adams, go trash his CD's on Amazon. (Or did you already do that?) This CD is great. His voice is amazing in a lonesome, cry-over-spilled-beer sort of way. How can any of you flatliners not love Queen of the Underworld or Almost Grown??????

4 out of 5 stars nothing like D Generation .......2004-09-06

Excellent debut CD that was produced and mixed by Ryan Adams who also adds guitar, keyboards and background vocals. Sounds a lot like a young Neil Young and nothing like D Generation except maybe in attitude. The single, "Queen of the Underworld" is the strongest and most memorable song on the album. Melissa Auf der Maur also adds some background vocals.

1 out of 5 stars ahhhhh.......2004-05-19

This record is as bad as anything Adams has ever done, so its fitting they work together. The talent and spirit of NYC is gone, so being held on a pedistale in NYC these days is by no means something to brag about. Stop milking your insignificant band that ended years ago.

The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson

    Album Description

A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.

Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.

Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.

LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.

This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

5 out of 5 stars Self Destruction Blues: Dead By Xmas.......2005-10-21

this is a collection of odds and ends to appease the record buying public while Hanoi Rocks started practising with their new drummer, Razzle (he of the infamous Vince Neil carcrash; which left Razzle dead). even though this is a batch of songs recorded at different times, it sounds surprisingly coherent and gels really well as a proper album. "Taxi Driver", "Beer and a Cigarette", and "Cafe Avenue" are all classic songs in their own right; but the one song that stands out (for more reasons than one) is the prickly glam stomp of "Dead By Xmas." one cannot help but get a little chill in the bones and think of the now-departed drummer as the haunting vocal refrain of this song closes out the album.

5 out of 5 stars Closer to The Cramps than to Cinderella.......2004-03-18

I just happened to be watching VH1 Classics and saw a Hanoi Rocks video the other day, a remake of CCR's "Up Around the Bend". I had heard of Hanoi Rocks, but basically because of the Vince Neil incident, and I hadn't heard thier music until just the other day. I picked up a copy of Self Destruction Blues in the used bin at a local record store. I was expecting just another hair band similiar to Cinderella or Poison, basically judging the band by the lipstick and hair on the disc's cover photo. WoW! Was I wrong! This album is a link between late 70's punk bands like The Nervous Eaters and the Hair bands of the 80's like Britny Fox. I loved the raw sound of the guitars and vocals. The songs are catchy without being mainstream at all. If you are a fan of bands like The Cramps, New York Dolls etc you have to pick this up. If you like the Hair Metal of the 80's you should also like this if nothing else just to hear the roots of bands like Guns n' Roses.

5 out of 5 stars Do whatever you have to do, but get a copy of this album........2003-11-23

This album shows that a group does its best work on the B-sides of its singles, because that is when they are not afraid to fool around and maybe fail.

Except that on this collection of B-sides and unreleased tracks, nothing fails. Every song is fresh and exciting.

When Hanoi Rocks was in existence I never paid them much mind. Recently I got this album and listened to it. The first listen I was playing it in the background and did not appreciate it.

Later on I listened seriously. Everything about this album is first-rate. Songs like "Self-Destruction Blues" are the best Blues Rock ever. The guitars, the harmonies even the little hooks in the melodies, everything. This band was a bunch of geniuses. In their own way they were as melodic as Burt Bacharach and as rocking as the Rolling Stones.

And to think they pulled it off in the era of the hair bands.

Do whatever you have to do, but get a copy of this album.

5 out of 5 stars THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!! EVER!!!!!.......2003-11-15

This CD means so much to me. I fist got the Uzi Suicide cassette version back in '95 (which I still have in mint condition, and that I will keep until the day I die... I AM SERIOUS!), and I got hooked for life...in 2002, I got the remastered, english version that I am reviewing here for a real low price, which, in addition to the music, includes a series of essays that are really insightful about the Rocks, Hanoi Rocks that is, my beloved Hanoi Rocks to be precise!

It is through those essays (all 5 remastered cd's include one: Saigon Shakes, Oriental Beat, Self Destruction Blues, Back to the Mystery City and All those wasted years)that i got to know that "Self Destruction Blues" was not,in fact, a "new" record at the time of its release, but rather a compilation of B-sides and unreleased songs from the first recording sessions the band made, recorded all over the place: Finland (where the band is originally from), England, etc. I would have never figured that one out if not for the included essay, because the quality of the songs, and the record as a whole would never hint that.

Even tought I love every single Hanoi Rocks song ever recorded (I actually wonder if there are any more unreleased songs... seems to be the case, since there is a boxed set prepared for release...), this record is just one of those few that, as far as i am concerned, is perfect. Not a weak link here, not a average song, all of them are top notch!! My absolute favorites are "Cafe Avenue", "I want you", "Kill city kills" (simply unbelievable!), "Self destruction blues", "Whisper in the Dark" (awesome!!!), "Taxi Driver"...well, I guess i am naming them all, am I not? Sorry, I can't help it...

If you think GN'R rule, you should give the Rocks a listen, so you can have a taste of the real thing...god only knows what could have been... but let's not get depressed, let's celebrate life, and as long as we have the music that Hanoi Rocks crafted, we will be safe from the hordes of boring, lackluster music... so go on, get a cold one, raise your glass to Razzle and enjoy...

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best New Bands to hit the Extreme Music Scene.......2005-03-13

This album has everything you would expect from a death/black metal band and then some. The vocals go from low death metal growls to insane high pitch screams and the guitar work compare to bands like old man's child, dimmu borgir, myrskog(Superior Massacre)some unforgettable solos that remind me of the late chuck schulinder. There are no so-so tracks, they are all great and different which can only be said for a handful of albums and this one is at the top of that list. so if you're looking for some extreme atmospheric death/black metal cd with a quality recording this is it.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS EXTREME METAL FOR THE FUTURE!!!.......2004-05-27

Whoa! What can I say about this album??? It seems that whatever I am going to say, it isn't going to describe how I really feel about this band and this album in particular. Words cannot describe this! I could use the words 'amazing' or 'brilliant' or 'masterpiece' but this album is beyond amazing, beyond brilliant and beyond a masterpiece. In fact it is all those words put together along with many other words like 'brutal', 'extreme', 'incredible', etc that describe how this album will make you feel!
I normally don't like to compare bands to other bands, but I will compare this band to some other greats just so I can prove to anyone that this is a band that will be HUGE! in the extreme metal scene in the near future. I would compare Crionics to later Behemoth, later Emperor, Zyklon and even Death, but the comparisons would not stop there as Crionics could be compared to just about any extreme metal band out there today. But Crionics are one of a kind! Believe me!
Waran's vocals are just awesome! he can growl like a death metaller and growl like a black metaller, he can also sing as well, suppose that is the only slight disappointment of this whole album, he only uses clean vocals on one track, if he used them on other tracks, I'd be listening to this cd every day for the rest of my life! But hey, who cares, this album is still just all the words I've already used to describe it at the top of this review. Waran's guitar work is also incredible as well, he will certainly be one of the great metal masterminds of the future!
Vac-V's synthetic backgrounds are absolutely amazing as well!, It gives this album so much atmosphere! I definetly put his work up there with Emperor, who I think were the most effective with the use of keyboards (always created great atmosphere and never over did it like some other bands who use keyboards).
To some up Marcotic's bass lines and Darkside's drumming...Awesome!, Amazing!, they sum up the band = four individuals who are going to be one of the biggest extreme metal bands in the future!
Through the years we have seen many countries produce great metal bands, Sweden, Norway, Finland being the most recent in my opinion. Well we have another country beginning a new list of great metal bands...Poland! So far there has been Behemoth, Decapitated, Vader, and now Crionics! Who knows what else is yet to come!
I predict that Crionics will be one of the biggest extreme metal bands in the coming years! It may be too early to predict this seeing this is only their first album, but once so you listen to this album, you will see what I mean. This is extreme metal for the future!

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation from an underrated band.......2006-04-23

Self-Destruction is a 1994 compilation on the Pacemaker lable that collects material from Moxy's first three albums. Moxy was a mid-70's hard rock band from Toronto with a slick, pre-hair metal sound similar to Angel, Starz, and countrymen Prism. Moxy never really caught on outside of Canada (and for some reason San Antonio, TX), but they are worth seeking out if you're a classic rock fan, and Self-Destruction is a good place to start. The last two tracks are from guitarist Buddy Caine's solo band.

The track listing is as follows:

Once again, the Rhymesayers label never fails to disappoint...Micronots frontman I Self Devine releases his debut solo album and to much respect from yours truly. I Self Devine brings his A-game to the table with an unmatched lyrical arsenal and backed by some of the best beats released in 2005 courtesy of Seattle's Jake One and Vitamin D as well as Atmosphere's Ant. With Atmosphere being my favorite hip hop duo, I have noticed that I have a strong love for Ant's production and his contributions to this release would be no different, Ant's production on "Get Cha Money On", "Feel My Pain", "All I Know", "Overthrow" and "Sunshine" are amongst my favorites on the album. But I am not going to take away from what Jake One and Vitamin D bring to this release. "Live In The Moment" and "Sex Sex Sex" also ranks in the top 5. I will admit that I was hesistant about buying this for a while because I wasnt sure if Devine would hold his own weight, but I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to get this and the guest appearances by Mazta I and Budah Tye will add to the enjoyment. Another treat is that about 20 seconds after the end of "Sunshine", there is a bonus hidden track. Underground fans will enjoy this release from the most successful underground label in hip hop.

      5 out of 5 stars excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-14

I THINK I SELF DEVINE IS BETTER SOLO. THE BEATS ARE BANGING TOO..

5 out of 5 stars I love it, great listen from start to finish........2005-08-23

I have been a Micranots fan for a while now and I dont know why they dont have any fans they are great hiphop. I buy every CD that has anything to do with the Micranots and they never dissapoint. Anyway this CD is a great listen, its a different sound than the Micranots but it has I Self Devine in it so you know it will be dope. When I went to see Atmosphere in NY the Micranots were there and they tore it up I Self freestyled incorperating words that the crowd gave him it was nice, not as good as the Oddjobs best live performance of the show but nice.

5 out of 5 stars different than micranots -- excellent, nonetheless.......2005-08-13

not as industrial sounding as the micranots....i self's flow's mellowed a bit - as listenable as ever....excellent beats....the guy's deep....the kind of album that should be huge, but people don't want to hear stuff that's smart....get this - you won't be disappointed...."go flow to flow to see the whole vision" (track 5)

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Best Hanoi Studio LP.......2005-02-25

ALthough, not technically a studio LP as we all know. It was a collection of left over tracks and b-sides first issued in Finland and eventually released all over the world via this LP. This is simply a rocking LP. I mean, look at the tracklisting:

      1. Love's an Injection - yeah baby!
      2. I Want You - and you will want this one too.
      3. Cafe Avenue - great. There is a remix on the boxset.
      4. Nothing New - This song is odd, but addictive.
      5. Kill City - the first Hanoi single actually.
      6. Self Destruction Blues - bluesy, harmonica stuff.
      7. Beer and a Cigarette - I don't want no love affair, i just love the clothes you wear...i got a deal...before i...
      8. Whispers in the Dark - synth rock - experimental. Nice.
      9. Taxi Driver - thee classic. Travis fave tune.
      10. Desperados - love the lyrics. Shoot the children???
      11. Problem Child - punk, punk and more.
      12. Dead by Xmas - eerily prophetic. Those lyrics are amazing..and bitter.

After Two Steps, this is the CD you need. Production is very good....grab any pressing, they're all good. The Japanese version is a little weak though. Uzi Suicide version is better.

5 out of 5 stars Before Hair Metal.......2004-02-23

Before hair metal there was a rock n roll beast that only ansewered to the name of HANOI ROCKS. From the simple truths of 'Love's An Injection', to the last words words of 'Dead By Xmas' (Christmas is forever)
There is not a flaw in this record. Granted Michael Monroe doesn't have the best voice but even still this record holds true that bad asses can wear makeup (unless you wanna be gay and go ahead and like poison)
Self Destruction Blues has possibly the best harmonic I've ever heard Michael do and everything done by Andy McCoy is awesome.
Buy this. This record is only outdone by All those wasted years, but not by much

5 out of 5 stars Before the LA Hair bands..........2002-12-04

There was the band they all tried to be, Hanoi Rocks.
This is one of Hanoi's best all around albums, from the melodic Cafe Avenue to the driving bluesy Taxi Driver, this is one album that you MUST have in your collection. Three of my favorite songs are on this album, Taxi Driver, Dead by Xmas, and the title cut, Self Destruction Blues, each showing off the band's strengths, without trying to hide their weaknesses behind over produced dubbed garbage (like the aforementioned hair bands).

This is glam at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Great album from Ryan Adams protegé.......2002-11-27

The former singer of D Genaration has traded his rock attitude for a acoustic guitar, and it wasn't a bad move. His first record, produced by friend Ryan Adams is just great. Starting the album with the lyrics "You say you want a revolution/ something you can touch" makes you stay with the stereo till the last tune. It's just powerful. It's a journey through lost love and self-pity. If you like the melancholia of Ryan Adams, Wilco or even David Gray this is the natural next step.

The bonus-track, rock version of "Brooklyn" is one of the best tracks on the album, I wouldn't have traded that for anything

5 out of 5 stars Shining Star Ablaze.......2002-11-17

In a world where music has basically taken a harsh turn for the worst here comes Jesse Malin with a great cd. He is not only a fabulous singer he is a great songwriter. His songs touch your soul & caress your heart. "Queen of the Underworld" & "Riding the Subway" rock you & then there is "Xmas" that is just so beautifully done. His songs have so much feeling & truth to them. His voice is like cuddling with your favourite velvet blanket on a cold winter night. I definitely recommend this cd for anyone who enjoys listening to great music.
