Product Description
The Portland Oregon music scene is alive and well. Very alive, very well! The Shins, Sleater Kinney, Helio Sequence, Decemberists, Sleater Kinney, The Dandy Warhols, The High Violets, The Thermals and Steven Malkumus. And now joining them is THE UPSIDEDOWN who just released their debut album TRUST ELECTRICITY on Reverb Records. The band had help in the studio from Dandy Warhol and Elliott Smith collaborator Tony Lash (ex-Heatmiser member) and it sounds absolutely brilliant. The band formed out of the ashes of seminal Portland shoegazer band The Bella Low and have been winning fans and influencing people ever since. They just finished up a full-on national tour and radio & press were faithful: The Willamette Week described The Upsidedown as: "dirty, glammed-up, drugged-down guitar rock with a dark heart. Their brand of ambient rock carries forth in a grand tradition: carefully constructed Dandies drone, pop hooks and devil-may-care-decadence." The Willamette Week know how to call it. KPSU described the band as "The best band that will come out of Portland in 2004!" With thumping, psychedelic, sexy and danceable beat driven songs like "Wake Up Drive Thru," "Blackeye Liner" and the Portland/George W. Bush riots inspired track "Pepper Spray," The Upsidedown are on a mission to bring some big bad dirty fun back into the world of independent music. They also successfully navigate territory formerly travelled by Love and Rockets and Echo & the Bunnymen, but with their own style, sound and attitude. And their cover version of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" is like no other. The band close off the album with their version, which is dripping in fuzz, swagger and sex. Prepare yourself to embrace The Upsidedown sound, which just recently hit shelves in North America.Customer Reviews:

The Derailers' problem: If you love a band that sounds as perfectly like Ray Price and Buck Owens as the Derailers do, then why not buy some vintage Price and Owens instead? Reverb Deluxe occasionally confronts this problem by including a few more influences than on previous releases: "California Angel" is Gram Parsons-style country rock; two other songs suggest the Nashville Sound. But even on these cuts, the Derailers are sowing a fairly narrow field--and with songwriting that doesn't live up to their heroes'. So the problem remains. The concluding, hidden, track, a Bakersfield-styled cover of "Raspberry Beret," is an entertaining novelty, but no solution. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

Great Twang, Great Songs.......2005-06-16
I bought this CD in 1999. It's 2005 now. And I still love this CD. This is one of those rare CD's where every track is catchy enough to grab your attention from the first listen. But there's so many little details & extra little touches - that the tracks still stand up to MANY repeated listens.
There are a few "heartache" numbers on this CD that I really love. (Can't Stop a Train, No One To Talk to But the Blues, Dull Edge of the Blade). But for the most part, this is an upbeat CD. It really puts me in a good mood, and makes me wanna dance!
If you ever get a chance to see these guys live - don't miss it. These guys obviously have a great time on stage, and you can't help but catch a little of that good vibe!
Some people would complain that these guys are re-hashing the Bakersfield sound. Like there's a problem with that? The Derailers pay homage to a great era of country music. And the songwriting is strong enough that they make a vintage style sound fresh.

Outstanding CD!.......2000-12-22
Let me explain where this review is coming from. I have very eclectic tastes. I listen to and enjoy just about every style of music from Mozart to Metallica, from Bluegrass to Blues. I don't care that much for most rap music, but hey...to each his own. Favorite bands would include U2, R.E.M., Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Black Crowes, Sixpence None the Richer, Dave Matthews, Rush, and so on. I have hundreds of CDs of all styles of music.
"The Space Around You" by Tugboat Annie is one of the top 5 or 10 best rock CDs I have. If you are a Tugboat Annie fan and you don't already have this CD, let me assure you that it is on a different level compared to their other releases. If you are not a Tugboat Annie fan, you need to listen to this CD. This is one of the few CDs that both my wife and I agree is great. In fact everyone I've shared it with has been very impressed.
I don't know how best to describe Tugboat Annie's sound because they have their own. The closest description I can think of is to compare them with some early R.E.M. such as that found on "Reckoning" only a little bit heavier.
To the songs:
STOP - This song kicks a** A great melodious-rock introduction to the CD. You WILL find yourself hitting repeat before you move on to track 2.
THE WISHING SONG - The fastest tempo song on the CD. Good driving to the beach to go surfing song. I defy you to listen without playing drums on your steering wheel.
TELL ME - Another strong melody. One of those songs that grows on you each time you listen.
LOVE - I love the first few bars of this one. Another one you have to hear to understand.
HELEN OF TROY - This song has taken the longest to grow on me, perhaps because I couldn't figure out the lyrics. Oh well, still better than 95% of what is on the radio today. One of the three mellowest songs on the CD.
EXPLANATIONS - The song I heard on the radio that made me say, "Who are these guys? I hafta have this CD!" Another great song!
MORE - I keep waiting for a weak song that I want to skip. Doesn't happen. Still going strong.
OFF THE GROUND - Mellow time.
AWAY - Second to last song, and I still haven't heard a clunker.
DON'T STOP HOLDING OUT YOUR HANDS - When this song started it reminded me immediately of what Pink Floyd might have sounded like if they weren't manic depressives. Cool song.
If you like straight ahead rock and roll, this is an album you need to buy. It gets better with each listen. Someone get these guys some publicity!! Saturday Night Live, Letterman, Leno, anybody!!

Great rock.......2004-03-31
The first track, Break of Day, will sound familiar to those who have heard the Wu before; it has that light, fun, ethereal sound that the Wu has captured over the years. SPMC and Make Believer, the album's second and third songs, are very catchy numbers with a great, classic rock sound. They have that 'hook' the Doobie Brothers and Bad Company used to reel us in many years ago. The disk's fourth track, Chateau in the Know, is, in my humble opinion, the weakest song on the disk... not because it is poorly written, but it just doesn't quite mesh as well or catch my liking as much. It is, however, the first song on the disk to incorporate the Wu "flatpicking" guitar work that they use on a regular basis. The next song, Flat Iron Suite, is a decent acoustic ballad. The album's sixth song is one of my favorite Wu songs, Dancing With Lula. It opens with a Dr John/Bernie Worrell style keyboard ditty that is excellent and is structured masterfully. Ben Stein would have trouble not getting excited about it. The same goes for the next track, Rhode Island Red--it grips you at the ear and drags you into the wonderful world of Wu. It has a down on the farm, get down and buck-dance bluegrass twist to it. The eighth track, Irregular Heartbeat, is another decent, ballad type song, but isn't the best that the Big Wu offes. Tequila, the ninth song, is yet another irresistable classic rock song, featuring driving guitar riffs and humorous lyrics about a girl that gets a little crazy when she hangs out with Jose Cuervo. I don't know what to say about the next song, Recipes. Lay off the peyote, fellas. Shoot the Moon, the eleventh track, is more similar to something off of 'Tracking Buffalo' or 'Folktales' in that it has typical Wu sound. It is great live and has proved to be one of my favorites. I can't give enough praise to the song Bird on a Wing. It should be the number one classic rock ballad ever (no, seriously folks). I could look you straight in the eye and tell you that they have taken the best elements from the best ballads of old and made a new one that blows everything else out of the water. Everything about it flows just like you want it to... it is textured so that it is somehow both delicate and consoling... it gives you chills. I'll stop there because you probably don't beleive me anyways, but you really should take my word on that one. Southern Energy, the albums closing track, is another great live song. It has a groovy latin vibe and a catchy chorus, although it somehow conjures up the scene from Christmas Vacation where Chevy Chase is day dreaming about his new pool (not a good or bad thing necessarily).
Overall, this is a great disk with few minuses. I'd especially recommend this to a classic rock fan who is trying or might be interested in the 'jam' scene. It's just so damn easy to like.

Product Description
Pop Matters Review The High Violets' sound can be easily linked to many of their predecessors, from the Sundays and Ride to My Bloody Valentine and the aforementioned Jesus and Mary Chain. Like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the High Violets do not try to hide their influences, but revel in them. Unlike the Gallagher brothers and their leit-motif of knocking down those who obviously made them what they are, The High Violets will gladly tell you whose path they are following. All of this would be a moot point if it weren't for the level of musical chops this band possesses. In many ways, this type of music gives rise to the musicians using their instruments to throw their particular colour on the mix, adding up to a glorious wall of sound. This includes the band's two singers, Kaitlyn ni Donovan and Clint Sargent. Each uses their voice as another instrument, whether it's ni Donovan's airy, helium-like vocals or Sargent's low tenor. Every song on 44 Down is a mid-tempo burner, kept interesting by the solid rhythm section of drummer Luke Strahota and bass player Allen Davis. Not only do they keep the tempo in check, but they add their own personalities to the mix through deceptively simple sounding patterns. When the songs go off into extended jams, Strahota and Davis keep things from going off the plot. The extended jams of songs like "Colors" -- and especially "Julia" -- are stunning and head-nod inducing, in keeping with the traditions of shoegazer music (a fitting term ascribed to the aforementioned influential groups). Long, majestic-sounding outros of pure riffing were a trademark of bands like My Bloody Valentine. But also like them, The High Violets' vocals are not always necessarily that clear, leaving the question mark of what a particular song is about, if anything. The vocals on 44 Down, especially those of ni Donovan, are almost unintelligible. The lyrics seem to be kept simple and repetitive, as the group understands that the overall sound is the thing, not the individual sound or instrument. It is the sound and form that are important, which give the music the ethereal feel they want. The sound of 44 Down may not be necessarily new, but it is made with passion by a group with obvious musical ability, and here, it is passion that counts. They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but The High Violets make this music their own. A song like the album's closer, "Wheel", could easily have been an outtake from The Jesus and Mary Chain's 1992 album Honey's Dead, but it still sounds fresh and interesting today. This is both a tribute to the original groups as well as to those carrying the torch. Given the hype for nostalgia these days, it might not be long before we look back at that period of the early 2000's when rock re-emerged from teen-pop hell, and, given the chance, The High Violets may themselves be inspiration to an upcoming band. At the very least, they should be noted for bringing back a kind of music that had all but disappeared for a period, and doing it well. Shoegazers, your time has come (again). 15 August 2002 Robert JamiesonCustomer Reviews:

Not The Version You're Looking For!!!!.......2006-07-10
A classic mix of nostalgic romance..................2002-03-23
The album begins with, "Sleepwalk" by Santos & Johnny. With the exception of (possibly) Percy Faith's, "Theme from a Summer Place", this is *undoubtedley* one of the most beautiful instrumentals from the rock n' roll era. You can't help but lose yourself in a sea of tranquility while listening to the dominant, yet relaxing steel guitar and the ever-so subtle backing. Definitely THE highlight of the album, and one you'll no doubt play the most. Ritchie Valens - a very talented young man who sadly died along with Buddy Holly in 1959 - appears with his classic, "Donna" - a track (allegedly) written for his then-girlfriend. If the story behind the song is indeed true, then there's no better way to express your feelings for the one you love than writing a song of this calibre.
"I'm You're Puppet" performed by James and Bobby Purify is a favourite on any 'oldies' radio station, but it just happens to be one of the weaker inclusions found on "Reverb Oldies". Doo-Wop features predominantly on the CD, and the choice cuts used rank amongst the best ever. "Duke Of Earl", "Sixteen Candles" and "My True Story" have all stood the test of time, but none are as beautiful or as thought-provoking as "Since I Don't Have You" sung to perfection by The Skyliners. If I had to list my all-time favourite top ten songs, this one - covered by such artists as diverse as Art Garfunkel and Guns N' Roses - would certainley appear in the upper echelons of that list.
Billy Stewart's, "Sitting In The Park" and The Shirelles', "Dedicated To The One I Love" are the original versions of two classic songs made popular in the late 60s (by Georgie Fame and The Mamas & Papas respectively) and "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me Of You)" has been covered several times by different artists since this Little Caesar original found on this CD. There's other fine songs too, and I must mention "When We Get Married" by The Dream Lovers, and "Dry Your Eyes" by Brenda and The Tabulati(?) - two groups I've never even heard of before, but these are two songs I love. There's also one or two pretty lame tracks but I never expected this to be the best album I've ever bought. Also, Aaron Neville's, "Tell It Like It Is", *may* be a classic song - and one I also like - but wasn't this recorded in the early 70s? If it was recorded earlier, it still seems too 'modern' for this collection of, let's say 'vintage oldies'. Rather an odd insertion I think.
There's countless albums like "Reverb Oldies" on the market - some, in all honesty, are even better. Still, if you want to experiment a little and discover what the 'true' meaning of a love song actually is, make this CD your next purchase...
