Product Description

The Portland Oregon music scene is alive and well. Very alive, very well! The Shins, Sleater Kinney, Helio Sequence, Decemberists, Sleater Kinney, The Dandy Warhols, The High Violets, The Thermals and Steven Malkumus. And now joining them is THE UPSIDEDOWN who just released their debut album TRUST ELECTRICITY on Reverb Records. The band had help in the studio from Dandy Warhol and Elliott Smith collaborator Tony Lash (ex-Heatmiser member) and it sounds absolutely brilliant. The band formed out of the ashes of seminal Portland shoegazer band The Bella Low and have been winning fans and influencing people ever since. They just finished up a full-on national tour and radio & press were faithful: The Willamette Week described The Upsidedown as: "dirty, glammed-up, drugged-down guitar rock with a dark heart. Their brand of ambient rock carries forth in a grand tradition: carefully constructed Dandies drone, pop hooks and devil-may-care-decadence." The Willamette Week know how to call it. KPSU described the band as "The best band that will come out of Portland in 2004!" With thumping, psychedelic, sexy and danceable beat driven songs like "Wake Up Drive Thru," "Blackeye Liner" and the Portland/George W. Bush riots inspired track "Pepper Spray," The Upsidedown are on a mission to bring some big bad dirty fun back into the world of independent music. They also successfully navigate territory formerly travelled by Love and Rockets and Echo & the Bunnymen, but with their own style, sound and attitude. And their cover version of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" is like no other. The band close off the album with their version, which is dripping in fuzz, swagger and sex. Prepare yourself to embrace The Upsidedown sound, which just recently hit shelves in North America.

4 out of 5 stars Psychocandy Revisited.......2005-04-08

If you've spent a lot of time with Galaxie 500, Jesus & the Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, etc.-- you have very good taste. And so do the Upsidedown. I feel like I should control my enthusiasm for this record because it's not taking me anywhere new. But visiting familiar musical landscapes with people who can finesse the experience can be quite satisfying. This is a very nicely produced and executed psycho-pop garage trip. It's like a love letter to heroin art rock. Most fans of the genre will fall prey. Lush, trippy, catchy and pretty cool.

The Derailers' problem: If you love a band that sounds as perfectly like Ray Price and Buck Owens as the Derailers do, then why not buy some vintage Price and Owens instead? Reverb Deluxe occasionally confronts this problem by including a few more influences than on previous releases: "California Angel" is Gram Parsons-style country rock; two other songs suggest the Nashville Sound. But even on these cuts, the Derailers are sowing a fairly narrow field--and with songwriting that doesn't live up to their heroes'. So the problem remains. The concluding, hidden, track, a Bakersfield-styled cover of "Raspberry Beret," is an entertaining novelty, but no solution. --David Cantwell

Hard to say if this or "Jackpot" is the better album. You should just buy them both.

5 out of 5 stars Great Twang, Great Songs.......2005-06-16

Like one of the other reviewers said - this is like a greatest hits CD. There's 14 tracks, and 12 of them could be singles. (If you could actually find radio stations that play this sort of country). All the tracks have a few things in common - perfect, tight harmonies; great twangy guitar; great steel guitar. But each track has it's own personality.

I bought this CD in 1999. It's 2005 now. And I still love this CD. This is one of those rare CD's where every track is catchy enough to grab your attention from the first listen. But there's so many little details & extra little touches - that the tracks still stand up to MANY repeated listens.

There are a few "heartache" numbers on this CD that I really love. (Can't Stop a Train, No One To Talk to But the Blues, Dull Edge of the Blade). But for the most part, this is an upbeat CD. It really puts me in a good mood, and makes me wanna dance!

If you ever get a chance to see these guys live - don't miss it. These guys obviously have a great time on stage, and you can't help but catch a little of that good vibe!

Some people would complain that these guys are re-hashing the Bakersfield sound. Like there's a problem with that? The Derailers pay homage to a great era of country music. And the songwriting is strong enough that they make a vintage style sound fresh.

    5 out of 5 stars Reverb DeluxI.......2004-01-16

I like this type of honky-tonk/Bakersfield music. I became a real Buck Owens fan ten years after he dropped out of sight And when I hear this new, so called country music I feel lousy. Quite honestly, these new guys are great singers, terrific musicians all, but their music just don't get it. Long winded, rambling stories and tunes that are really not good to listen to. They are fantastic dancers, performers and such, but the music HAS NOT GOT IT, AND THAT GOES FOR THE WOMEN AS WELL. Old timers like Merle Haggard, Kitty Wells Buck Owens, Lorettta Lynn and Tammy Wynett were playing music that made me want to sing and play also. It makes me feel good in my heart. If I'm an old dinasaur, so be it. Modern country sucks. Don A.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Mix of Style and Attitude.......2003-09-08

This CD has something like the style of Buck Owens with the attitude of the Beatles. The result is a really fun collection that makes the steel and twang irresistable. Don't miss Raspbery Beret.

    5 out of 5 stars super good.......2002-10-28

punk twang? cow punk? country jam funk? It's great! Defies labels, reaches the heart and lives up the reputation of "alternative country" Especially good cuts: 'Can't Stop A Train' and an amazing rendition of Prince's 'Raspberry Beret'
[a 'hidden' track at the end]...I used to listen to 'country-rock' in the 70s...bemoaned the loss of it...but now these guys and others like 'em have brought it back-but even better

This whole album is awesome. Great tracks throughout! I simply can't believe that I had never heard these guys on the radio before. I heard about these guys from the "monster.com" commercial some years ago. Now I let all my friends borrow the cd now, and they love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Tugboat Annie Power Pop Makes You Want More.......2002-07-03

In 'The Space Around You', Tugboat Annie has assembled a wonderful power-pop jaunt which keeps you interested from beginning to end. Never straying too far from their basic guitar crunch and melody mix, the band zips through 10 solid tracks which had me smiling the whole way. It is fun music. Period. The writing is clean and creative, but keeps to simple relationship-based lyrics which paint with a broad brush that allows the listener to interpret as he will, or just simply listen and enjoy. While not breaking any new ground, the sound reflections of Oasis/Third Eye Blind/Weezer may be similar, but Tugboat Annie accomplishes what those bands couldn't - to keep me interested through every song and left me wanting MORE. PLEASE RECORD ANOTHER ALBUM SOON! (Kudos to Monster.Com commercial for not letting this album slip away unnoticed...)

    4 out of 5 stars Good tunes.......2001-07-12

This cd is quite good. There are several highlight tracks including my favorites Love, Explanations, and Don't Stop Holding Out Your Hands. The music is good and the listen is excellent all the way. Not quite worth the five star mark, but worth the money. If you like Tugboat Annie check out 6 going on 7.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD!.......2000-12-22

I will go out on a limb here and say right now that if this band will get some airplay and some publicity, they will be huge.

Let me explain where this review is coming from. I have very eclectic tastes. I listen to and enjoy just about every style of music from Mozart to Metallica, from Bluegrass to Blues. I don't care that much for most rap music, but hey...to each his own. Favorite bands would include U2, R.E.M., Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Black Crowes, Sixpence None the Richer, Dave Matthews, Rush, and so on. I have hundreds of CDs of all styles of music.

"The Space Around You" by Tugboat Annie is one of the top 5 or 10 best rock CDs I have. If you are a Tugboat Annie fan and you don't already have this CD, let me assure you that it is on a different level compared to their other releases. If you are not a Tugboat Annie fan, you need to listen to this CD. This is one of the few CDs that both my wife and I agree is great. In fact everyone I've shared it with has been very impressed.

I don't know how best to describe Tugboat Annie's sound because they have their own. The closest description I can think of is to compare them with some early R.E.M. such as that found on "Reckoning" only a little bit heavier.

    To the songs:

STOP - This song kicks a** A great melodious-rock introduction to the CD. You WILL find yourself hitting repeat before you move on to track 2.

THE WISHING SONG - The fastest tempo song on the CD. Good driving to the beach to go surfing song. I defy you to listen without playing drums on your steering wheel.

TELL ME - Another strong melody. One of those songs that grows on you each time you listen.

LOVE - I love the first few bars of this one. Another one you have to hear to understand.

HELEN OF TROY - This song has taken the longest to grow on me, perhaps because I couldn't figure out the lyrics. Oh well, still better than 95% of what is on the radio today. One of the three mellowest songs on the CD.

EXPLANATIONS - The song I heard on the radio that made me say, "Who are these guys? I hafta have this CD!" Another great song!

MORE - I keep waiting for a weak song that I want to skip. Doesn't happen. Still going strong.

OFF THE GROUND - Mellow time.

AWAY - Second to last song, and I still haven't heard a clunker.

DON'T STOP HOLDING OUT YOUR HANDS - When this song started it reminded me immediately of what Pink Floyd might have sounded like if they weren't manic depressives. Cool song.

If you like straight ahead rock and roll, this is an album you need to buy. It gets better with each listen. Someone get these guys some publicity!! Saturday Night Live, Letterman, Leno, anybody!!

5 out of 5 stars This Band Keeps Growing.......2000-06-10

This is another ten solid tracks from a band I first witnessed at a loft party in Buffalo during another lifetime. Good on first listen, but after the fourth spin all the hooks and nuances come through. If the last track "Dont Stop Holding Out" doesn't become a radio staple across the land then all station programmers should be marched into the Boston Harbor.

    4 out of 5 stars Great rock.......2004-03-31

Like classic rock? If you answered 'yes', the Wu won't hesitate to tell you that this album is right up your alley. It has a full, well (but not over) produced sound. Anyone familiar with the Big Wu knows that they get thrown into the 'jam band' catagory (one that spans jazz, rock, blues, and even some electronica and rap... any improvised music pretty much nowadays). Don't be quick to dismiss them for this fact--these are great tunes!

The first track, Break of Day, will sound familiar to those who have heard the Wu before; it has that light, fun, ethereal sound that the Wu has captured over the years. SPMC and Make Believer, the album's second and third songs, are very catchy numbers with a great, classic rock sound. They have that 'hook' the Doobie Brothers and Bad Company used to reel us in many years ago. The disk's fourth track, Chateau in the Know, is, in my humble opinion, the weakest song on the disk... not because it is poorly written, but it just doesn't quite mesh as well or catch my liking as much. It is, however, the first song on the disk to incorporate the Wu "flatpicking" guitar work that they use on a regular basis. The next song, Flat Iron Suite, is a decent acoustic ballad. The album's sixth song is one of my favorite Wu songs, Dancing With Lula. It opens with a Dr John/Bernie Worrell style keyboard ditty that is excellent and is structured masterfully. Ben Stein would have trouble not getting excited about it. The same goes for the next track, Rhode Island Red--it grips you at the ear and drags you into the wonderful world of Wu. It has a down on the farm, get down and buck-dance bluegrass twist to it. The eighth track, Irregular Heartbeat, is another decent, ballad type song, but isn't the best that the Big Wu offes. Tequila, the ninth song, is yet another irresistable classic rock song, featuring driving guitar riffs and humorous lyrics about a girl that gets a little crazy when she hangs out with Jose Cuervo. I don't know what to say about the next song, Recipes. Lay off the peyote, fellas. Shoot the Moon, the eleventh track, is more similar to something off of 'Tracking Buffalo' or 'Folktales' in that it has typical Wu sound. It is great live and has proved to be one of my favorites. I can't give enough praise to the song Bird on a Wing. It should be the number one classic rock ballad ever (no, seriously folks). I could look you straight in the eye and tell you that they have taken the best elements from the best ballads of old and made a new one that blows everything else out of the water. Everything about it flows just like you want it to... it is textured so that it is somehow both delicate and consoling... it gives you chills. I'll stop there because you probably don't beleive me anyways, but you really should take my word on that one. Southern Energy, the albums closing track, is another great live song. It has a groovy latin vibe and a catchy chorus, although it somehow conjures up the scene from Christmas Vacation where Chevy Chase is day dreaming about his new pool (not a good or bad thing necessarily).

Overall, this is a great disk with few minuses. I'd especially recommend this to a classic rock fan who is trying or might be interested in the 'jam' scene. It's just so damn easy to like.

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing CD.......2003-04-11

The Big Wu have taken a huge leap forward. Already a solid live act with some good studio releases under their belt. Spring Reverb establishes the band as one of the top songwriting groups of the "jam band" genre. I would go as far to say the Wu are primed to be one of the most essential bands on this decade. Add this CD to your collection.

    Product Description

Pop Matters Review The High Violets' sound can be easily linked to many of their predecessors, from the Sundays and Ride to My Bloody Valentine and the aforementioned Jesus and Mary Chain. Like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the High Violets do not try to hide their influences, but revel in them. Unlike the Gallagher brothers and their leit-motif of knocking down those who obviously made them what they are, The High Violets will gladly tell you whose path they are following. All of this would be a moot point if it weren't for the level of musical chops this band possesses. In many ways, this type of music gives rise to the musicians using their instruments to throw their particular colour on the mix, adding up to a glorious wall of sound. This includes the band's two singers, Kaitlyn ni Donovan and Clint Sargent. Each uses their voice as another instrument, whether it's ni Donovan's airy, helium-like vocals or Sargent's low tenor. Every song on 44 Down is a mid-tempo burner, kept interesting by the solid rhythm section of drummer Luke Strahota and bass player Allen Davis. Not only do they keep the tempo in check, but they add their own personalities to the mix through deceptively simple sounding patterns. When the songs go off into extended jams, Strahota and Davis keep things from going off the plot. The extended jams of songs like "Colors" -- and especially "Julia" -- are stunning and head-nod inducing, in keeping with the traditions of shoegazer music (a fitting term ascribed to the aforementioned influential groups). Long, majestic-sounding outros of pure riffing were a trademark of bands like My Bloody Valentine. But also like them, The High Violets' vocals are not always necessarily that clear, leaving the question mark of what a particular song is about, if anything. The vocals on 44 Down, especially those of ni Donovan, are almost unintelligible. The lyrics seem to be kept simple and repetitive, as the group understands that the overall sound is the thing, not the individual sound or instrument. It is the sound and form that are important, which give the music the ethereal feel they want. The sound of 44 Down may not be necessarily new, but it is made with passion by a group with obvious musical ability, and here, it is passion that counts. They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but The High Violets make this music their own. A song like the album's closer, "Wheel", could easily have been an outtake from The Jesus and Mary Chain's 1992 album Honey's Dead, but it still sounds fresh and interesting today. This is both a tribute to the original groups as well as to those carrying the torch. Given the hype for nostalgia these days, it might not be long before we look back at that period of the early 2000's when rock re-emerged from teen-pop hell, and, given the chance, The High Violets may themselves be inspiration to an upcoming band. At the very least, they should be noted for bringing back a kind of music that had all but disappeared for a period, and doing it well. Shoegazers, your time has come (again). — 15 August 2002 — Robert Jamieson

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2005-08-18

There's a lot of shoegazer music out there, but aside from the big names- MBV, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, much of it is in the form of inconsequential records from bands that seem to produce little more than dull knocks offs of their influences. The High Violets succeed brilliantly at taking their inspiration and forming it into waves of warm, fuzzy rock. Layered with breathy vocals and gorgeous harmonies, it comes together to create a fresh, sensual, and overlooked debut. 44 Down is a hidden gem, and an album that's probably a little too indie for its own good, in that is worthy of attention and would probably find a sizeable audience were it to get just a little exposure on the national circuit- after listening to this record, you'll be hard pressed to understand why you haven't seen them opening for a big band on a national tour or appearing on Conan O'Brien.

5 out of 5 stars OH MY STARS!.......2004-04-01

Wow, what a CD. These guys & gal are awesome! If you take a blender and add some Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, and a few magic mushrooms, blend it up really good and boom, you have the High Violets. What else can I say? Excellent for you spacedelic rockers!

1 out of 5 stars Not The Version You're Looking For!!!!.......2006-07-10

These are great oldies with the charm, grit and sonic inflection brought by the years old vintage analog recording equiptment. So why did the producers of this album see the need to destroy the integrity of these recordings by ADDING INSANE AMOUNTS OF REVERB that was not on the originals. Almost every of these songs I have on vinyl 45s AND cd compilation reissues. After two seconds of listening to this I can tell you these are absolutely RUN THROUGH A HEAVY REVERB EFFECT during the recording/remastering phase of this crappy cd. It's almost unlistenable and it's so over the top that it's laughable. To make Aaron Neville's late 1960's "Tell It Like It Is" with it's rather dry and tight horn and tremolo guitar section (a signature sound of Down South Muscle Shoals R&B at the time)sound as though it was being recorded in a mid 50's high school gymnasium was frickin nauseating. Double that for "Angel Baby" by Rosie and the Originals. This actually was recorded with NATURAL reverb in the early 1960's, so the need to even tamper with that one to make it sound dated is beyond my comprehension. The whole thing sounds like Phil Spector with a muffled bullhorn playing at the bottom of Grand Canyon. Why?WHYYYYY???????

5 out of 5 stars A classic mix of nostalgic romance..................2002-03-23

The one thing I find appealing about the golden rock n' roll era is the naivety and innocence displayed in the music. Whereas nowadays a 'love' song means nothing without reference towards sex, back in the 50s (and early 60s), just to sing a song about being in 'love' made a song so special. "Reverb Oldies" is a fantastic reminder of that period featuring some of the greatest love songs ever recorded. There's many well-known classics found here, plus a few not-so-familiar tracks. Still, if it's nostalgic romance you're after, this is a must-have CD.

The album begins with, "Sleepwalk" by Santos & Johnny. With the exception of (possibly) Percy Faith's, "Theme from a Summer Place", this is *undoubtedley* one of the most beautiful instrumentals from the rock n' roll era. You can't help but lose yourself in a sea of tranquility while listening to the dominant, yet relaxing steel guitar and the ever-so subtle backing. Definitely THE highlight of the album, and one you'll no doubt play the most. Ritchie Valens - a very talented young man who sadly died along with Buddy Holly in 1959 - appears with his classic, "Donna" - a track (allegedly) written for his then-girlfriend. If the story behind the song is indeed true, then there's no better way to express your feelings for the one you love than writing a song of this calibre.

"I'm You're Puppet" performed by James and Bobby Purify is a favourite on any 'oldies' radio station, but it just happens to be one of the weaker inclusions found on "Reverb Oldies". Doo-Wop features predominantly on the CD, and the choice cuts used rank amongst the best ever. "Duke Of Earl", "Sixteen Candles" and "My True Story" have all stood the test of time, but none are as beautiful or as thought-provoking as "Since I Don't Have You" sung to perfection by The Skyliners. If I had to list my all-time favourite top ten songs, this one - covered by such artists as diverse as Art Garfunkel and Guns N' Roses - would certainley appear in the upper echelons of that list.

Billy Stewart's, "Sitting In The Park" and The Shirelles', "Dedicated To The One I Love" are the original versions of two classic songs made popular in the late 60s (by Georgie Fame and The Mamas & Papas respectively) and "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me Of You)" has been covered several times by different artists since this Little Caesar original found on this CD. There's other fine songs too, and I must mention "When We Get Married" by The Dream Lovers, and "Dry Your Eyes" by Brenda and The Tabulati(?) - two groups I've never even heard of before, but these are two songs I love. There's also one or two pretty lame tracks but I never expected this to be the best album I've ever bought. Also, Aaron Neville's, "Tell It Like It Is", *may* be a classic song - and one I also like - but wasn't this recorded in the early 70s? If it was recorded earlier, it still seems too 'modern' for this collection of, let's say 'vintage oldies'. Rather an odd insertion I think.

There's countless albums like "Reverb Oldies" on the market - some, in all honesty, are even better. Still, if you want to experiment a little and discover what the 'true' meaning of a love song actually is, make this CD your next purchase...

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellant.......2005-07-03

"The Reverb" is an EP of the upcoming album "Armed to the Teeth." The five songs are written well and Tommy Walter, Sean Woolstenhulme, and Bryan Head play great together. I was a big fan of the first album "Humanistic" but "The Reverb" shows that the group has improved. You can tell a lot of work went into the music. "The Catalyst" and "Armed to the Teeth" are the songs that keep playing in my head.
I'm a fairly picky person when it comes to the music I buy but I don't hesitate to spend my money on good music and AP is a band that puts out good music. If you're the least bit curious about this band, buy "The Reverb" EP. It's under six bucks and it is well worth it.
