Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03
I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!
just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09
loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.
Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06
Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.
Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04
I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.
Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05
Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

When listening to the Shaggs (the Wiggin sisters--Dorothy on lead guitar and vocals, Betty on rhythm guitar and vocals, Helen on drums), one needs to jettison conventional notions of song structure, what is "in tune" or not, even what constitutes suitable subject matter for a pop song ("My Pal Foot Foot," "Who Are Parents?"). Originally issued on a small, dodgy label in 1969, the guileless sounds of Philosophy cast a long shadow nonetheless; the group was one of Frank Zappa's favorites and their music inspired rock primitivists Beat Happening as well as sublime archivists NRBQ and Yo La Tengo. On Philosophy, the teenaged sisters' delirious, playfully constructed music has everything you least expect: loopy polyrhythms that follow no external law, off-kilter singing conducted in unison that sounds like the hit parade broadcast from Jupiter, and bizarre, elementary-school guitar playing. Best enjoyed in small doses, this enchanting, accidental music approximates the highly personal charms of so-called "outsider" visual art. To paraphrase a saccharine song of yore, the Shaggs' music is very beautiful--in its own way. --Mike McGonigal

Things I wonder.......2007-02-08
Cheers to the most discordant pop you'll ever listen to..."There are many things I wonder, There are many things I don't, It seems as though the things I wonder most, Are the things I never find out..." A group of sisters that performed for only several years, almost exclusively in the local town hall and/or nursing home! Their father used his savings to record their album, and 900 of the original 1000 copies disappeared with the producer. Sets the stage for a strange and melancholy journey into family dynamics...
My Mind Reels.......2007-01-27
the only way to describe this is the feeling you get after you just got hit in the head and you don't know what is going, the vast confusion perfectly descibes this. listen to a sample and everything you know about music and have learned in put in a garbage disposal and mixed up till you don't remember what music is for the time being. this is also probably the most surreal thing ive ever listened to also. its actually very creepy if you look at the right way. my feelings for this 'album' are somewhat confusing also, first i find it absurd and hilarious that some people think it is 'beautiful' and it goes to show that there is someone to defend everything, then on the other hand i feel like it takes a very very strange group to come up with this and i don't think ive ever heard anything quite like it. it's like their father played music all the time till they were 3, then locked them in a cave for about 14 years then stuck them in a recording studio and asked them to play from memory. its like that. my mind still feels likes its going to explode everytime i hear this because this is actual ANTI music, when asked to rate this i couldn't possibly. my real question is is how did these girls get to record this? how did someone press this to vinyl with a straight face? who heard this in the recording studio and though, OH YEAH this will be a a top ten hit. Then again this was the 60s, which brings me to another point, the only way you could of released this and the only way you could of listened and enjoyed this is through drug use.
I like it.......2007-01-23
An interesting album, though it's probably best in small doses. Certainly a one-of-a-kind thing. Although to some extent it does just sound like some kids banging out music, for brief moments everything comes together and it sounds catchy and oftentimes remarkably like music years ahead of it's time. At many moments the instrumental aspect sounds almost exactly like some basic form of punk music. Worth a listen.
It is truly bad.......2007-01-10
It is really painful to listen to, if you have any ear for music whatsoever. It's also interesting, it's hard to believe anyone could be this bad. I've only ever listened to it once, all the way through, and that was pretty difficult, but it has a place in my car, in case I'm falling asleep at the wheel and I don't have time to pull over for a nap. There's no way anyone could fall asleep to this, let's see, do I want to call it, music? No, it is not really music in any real sense, these are disconnected, disjointed, dysharmonious, dysrhythmic sounds made with musical instruments. I recommend this cd to 1) people who have any doubt that it was the worst rock n roll album ever, hearing is truly believing 2) bartenders and bouncers who have to clear out large groups of people, and have access to a powerful sound system 3) music teachers, instructors who need to demonstrate the importance of professional music lessons, 4) collectors of the bad, the tasteless, the defective, and 5) free jazz and postmodern symphonic music fans (see if they can tell the difference).
They SUCK!!.......2006-12-24
I just couldn't contain my laughter. My nephew and I were busting a gut when listening to My Pal Foot Foot.

never achieving any complex or intricate cohesion between multiple instrumental parts being played at the same time, so ultimately it's just dull, your focus is always directed to one primary rhythm or melody, the backing layers acting as mere window dressing. the polyrhythms they seem to be aspiring to never materialise.
Accessible Progressive music.......2006-11-22
A lot of ppl have been comparing this band to the Mars Volta, which I don't agree with. Nobody sounds like the Mars Volta. No, Brazil has their own sound. At the center of their sound is the piano. The band plays a progressive style of rock that accompanies melodies and at times, catchy songs. I would compare their style to 70's rock but with a modern twist. This stuff sounds very epic with production from Dave Fridman(Flaming Lips, Thursday). Just check out the track 2 "Crime". I was sold after that track alone.
Re-Loused in the Comatorium.......2006-10-06
Jonathon Newby must have a set of pitch pipes tuned to Cedric Bixler's vocal cords, because there are times that his singing inflection is a dead ringer for the current Mars Volta vocalist's style. "The Philosophy of Velocity" itself plays like a sequel to that band's 2003 release, "De-Loused in the Comatorium"--a punk's brisk run through poppy fields planted with lyrical razorwire. Although Newby's lyrics are considerably more "down-to-earth" when put up against contemporaries like the Mars Volta, it's the uniquely energized crunch of this album that should earn Brazil a spot in today's music scene beyond "that band that sounds like At The Drive-In with a piano."
Their "Philosophy" bumps shoulders with various facets of Omar and Cedric's bands, but at all the right moments: opener "Crime (And The Antique Solution)" busts out of the start-gate with a punishing-yet-trippy think-it's-a-guitar riff and a vocal inertia that should win over naysayers within a few bars. The music is complex, but with stronger reliance on polyrhythm rather than the inclusion of "strange" rock instrumentation.
"A Year In Heaven"'s grand chording on piano suggests epic jazz-blues at first, but delivers a soupy feast of guitar experimentation and self-harmonizing from Newby, still underscored by the same piano. The song later enters an acoustic finger-plucked passage supported with woebegone electric piano arpeggios, then revs back up for a grand exit. Then we go down "The Remarkable Cholmondeley Chute System" in just under 50 seconds, and come across "Breathe," a song which bears little resemblance to the Pink Floyd song of the same name, except perhaps in spirit. Among the most straightforward rockers on "Philosophy," "Breathe" still manages to sound like nothing else being produced today. Even the Mars Volta don't sound like this anymore.
Few modern artists possess the fearlessness required to repeat the experiments of yesteryear, and even fewer of them have the talents to come out of such re-experiments with something listenable in hand. Brazil have done it with their latest record. Even if it's only a trip down memory lane, "The Philosophy of Velocity" is a trip any fan of concept albums and madman experimentation can't afford to pass up.
amazing.......2006-10-05
it's so hard to find a song, and even more so an album, that is put together so well that it tells a rich and endearing story, with multiple facets that come at you from every angle. i've listened to this album straight through so many times, and every time i listen to it i hear something new and fascinating. conceptually from start to finish, it is inspiring and awesome. great producer, great mastering, great band. i always bitch about how music in general just ain't how it used to be (in reference to Queen, Rush, or any solid rock band in the 70s and 80s) and Brazil has tried and succeeded in making something real and beautiful again in music. http://www.braziltheband.com
Breathe in, Breathe out, your final mission.......2006-10-05
Brazil has been one of my favorite bands for a couple years now. A Hostage...
is a top 20 album for me; naturally I've been waiting for their next effort with great anticipation. Once again they do not dissapoint, fellow fans and I. It has many similarities to A Hostage, that makes them unique. It's a little more accessible than A Hostage, but it shows that their pop sensibilities excel the majority of music today. Breathe, Crime and Antique, and You never Know are my personal faves.

Vitas is Amazing.......2007-03-18
I can't say it any better than previous reviewers, so I will add only that this singer/actor/composer has totally blown me away with his talent. I have all his albums and can't stop listening. His style is ever changing and always fascinating! If you have not watched him perform, search for his videos on the internet. He is a joy to behold!
Brilliant!.......2006-12-13
Really good stuff. Vitas has a unique style and voice and it's great fun to listen to him playing and experimenting. He's a sopranist, so the first thing anyone notices is his incredible range and Opera #1 is a great showcase for it. But he's not a one-trick pony and on more traditional songs he knows when to sing it straight and when to let loose.
You can check out the tracks at his official site to get an idea. My personal favorites are Opera 1 and 2, Dreams and 7th Element but frankly there isn't a dud on the disk-although Prelude isn't really a song.
Philosophy of Miracle---Rebirth of Orpheus.......2006-01-12
The vocal genius, Vitas has swept the whole Russia with his breathtaking multi-octaves and dazzling performance. He was talent-searched in his 19 by the famous producer, Sergey Nikolaevich Pudovkin in an obscure small theatre in Odessa, Ukraine, thanks to an intersection of endowment and luck.
This album is the first showcase of the young singer's distinctive, heart-tugging voice developed far beyond physical limitations: perfectly desperate soprano notes of operatic arias highlighted in "Opera 1" and "Opera 2", incredible ventriloquist skill displayed in "Karlson" and "Old Gramophone", and "Prelude", which contains vivid imitation on "Flight of the Bumble Bee" by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, mystic takings of Middle East and Indian styled "The Seventh Element" and "The Birthday of My Death", as well as exquisite coloratura gymnastics in "Dreams" and "Soul".
Aside from his overwhelming capability over various types of music including pop, rap, Gothic rock and classic, Vitas takes full credit for composition work.
The singer's debut album is an experimental one with irresistible power, an album presenting Vitas overtaking control over music, a telling hint that Orpheus has returned. If you like edgy yet resonant music you MUST add this CD to your collection.

Damn good hip-hop from an emcee from... Connecticut!?!?!.......2007-06-29
Yeah. Ap holds it down with sick flow, tight wordplay, and great storytelling. Only wish I had heard his stuff on 88.9 when they were still playing good stuff over 4 years ago.
Luckily for me, I stumbled upon him through 7L & Esoteric this year who I remember being mentioned all the time but never heard them on 88.9.
Buy it.
asdf.......2007-05-07
i can't belive this has a 4 star average.. it should atleast have a 4.5... i'm giving it 5 stars to try to increase it, to try and get it to wat i believe it should be 4.5....
some sick beats and some more 'matured' apathy lyrics shows his storytelling ability and lyrics amazement (heck, he's almost as good as me... he hee)...
this is a great cd that any apathy of demigodz fan should have... bloody magnificent after a few listens, it might not be an immediate classic, but over time, you'll love it SOOOOO much like i do... it's bloody great...
it's like that new linkin park album minutes to midnight, not at all in substance, but that it shows a more mature side and shows an incredible amount of artistic integrity...
a great listen, if you like ANYTHING from dough rakers, demigodz, or AOTP, get this... you will NOT regret it... i certianly didn't, and i've never met anyone who did...!
Eastern Philosophy....AP's best work so far!!.......2007-01-19
I got wind of Apathy's skills afew years back on the 7l+Esoteric album "The Soul Purpose" and thought he was amazing so promptly went out and copped his "It's the Bootleg Muthafu*kas! Vol. 1". Its a monster album of about 60 tracks and freestyles that any hiphop fan needs in their collection. With the subject matter primarily battle raps I was wondering if he had any depth in his lyrical arsenal. If I had any doubts this album blew them away!! Everybody knows his concept behind it, that mid-90's east coast boom bap feel and the production is brilliantly done with that in mind. Chum the Skrilla Guerilla produces most of this and is on point every single time. With 2 or 3 other producers also helping out on afew tracks they all seem on the same wavelength and provide the perfect soundscapes for Apathy to rip on. From the opening 3 tracks "Eastern Philosophy", "1,000 Grams" and "All About Crime" to the red hot collabo "Can't Leave Rap Alone" (my favourite) he shines lyrically and the level of skill never drops for a second. The deeper, more complex side of this verbal giant unfolds beautifully on tracks like "One of Those Days" (hilarious, every man in a relationship will love it), "Chemical" (probably the most complex so far in his career), "Buck Stops Here" (taking about money in a way only he seems able to do) and "The Winter" (describing living in his hometown during the worst season of the year). It really is a tour-de-force for an m.c that many only suspected of being a battle rapper. Probably the underground hiphop album of '06.
Real.......2007-01-03
Not Apathy's best, I want to preface by saying that. But honestly there's some really dope tracks on this c.d. and the only problem I have with it is that many of the songs are more philosophical, hence the title, than most hip-hop songs. That sounds like a stupid observation, it just wasn't what I was used to from Ap. Anyway, the point is all his collabo's are dope as hell and the other tracks will definitely keep your mind working a little more than listening to Krunk Juice, which is why AotP and Demigodz are the dopest music out there right now. Overall, 4.5 stars, all other Ap stuff is 5.
Underground Classic.......2006-12-01
Understandably, many Apathy fans may be turned off by the fact that this is a mostly topical/conceptual album instead of the usual battle raps Ap writes, but I personally think it's better than his previous releases. Apathy is one of the best with punchlines but this album proves he can also hold his own with a topic whether it be about money ("Buck Stops Here"), drug addiction ("Chemical") or the coldest season ("Winter"). Apathy is one of the best rappers out right now, and this album is definitely his best work so far. Every song is tight, lyrically, and production-wise.
Worth buying...

Quintessential "Bill"........2005-10-20
One of the previous reviewers pointed out that this stuff can't compare with the comic genius of the 80's sitcom "My Two Dads." It's probably a goof review, but I SO hope it's not because Bill would certainly get a kick out of a response like that from the Joey Lawrence/Everybody Loves Raymond, side of our population.
If you're looking for a good sample of Bill Hicks comedy, this is a pretty good cd to start with. Some of his best subjects (although some of my favorites are noticably absent: Sharon Stones "talent", Jay Leno's satanic tryst, etc.) Be warned, if you are easily offended, better stick to Jeff Foxworthy, cause Bill pulls no punches, which is why I love him.
In my opinion this guy was not only funny as hell, but a true free-thinker and an exposer of hypocrisy. Something we need more of.
I only wish Bill had lived long enough to skewer "W" in his routine. I think the second Bush woulda truly inspired (sickened) Bill into some of his finest material yet.
RIP Bill.
greatest comedian that ever lived.......2005-10-13
bill hicks was the greatest comedian that ever has graced this earth he puts other comedians like dave chapelle, dane cook and all those other comedy central posers to shame. he made intelligent jokes he deosnt swear just so ppl will laugh like 4th graders when he says f***. He could relate to the audience in a way only he could do. anyone that listens to his stuff can laugh at it because anyone and everyone will get it. he covers everything like hotel rooms, hicks, politics, religion, drugs, pornography, Willie nelson, the military and drugs. No one is safe from his comedy, even i was offended almost by some of his stuff about the military cause i know ppl in the military but i still loved it. his stuff is intelligent he deosnt joke about when he was high he jokes about how the government is wrong about drugs and alcohol. he will make you think and everything you know will change. this should not be the only bill hicks cd you buy. rest in peace man i know your smoking it up in heaven with saint peter because hell is none-smoking
Comic Genius.......2005-08-02
Very unique and opinionated observational comedian who never sold out. Bravo!
Bill Hicks, (not for hicks)........2005-06-28
The more I listen to Bill, the more I realize he is a preacher as much as a comedian. This guy tells it only as he see's it, which is usually how it is. He's quite intelligent and informed, and he makes you think as much as he makes you laugh. Everything is covered on "Philosophy". Drugs, sex, politics, pop culture, evolution, religion, etc. Every curse word in the book is used, and it's all the better for it. As with all great comedians, it's not just what he says, but the delivery that makes this excellent. If you're looking for your first, or only Bill Hicks album, this is it.
"We are the Hooligians!".......2005-03-30
I just bought this CD yesterday. Funny. Some of it was a little much for me, but it had some really great moments. Particularly, "We are the Hooligians!" "what do you mean what am I reading FOR?" and "Pack and a half a day? Why don't you just put on a dress, too?" I've never heard a Bill Hick routine as a whole, but now that I've heard a little I do plan on getting the DVD! The compliation is done really well, too. The only reason I couldn't quite pull myself to give it the full five stars is that Bill only lived up to part of the hype. Yes, he was as funyn as I've heard, but I'd also heard that his veiwpoints were totally different from most comedians. Now, maybe it was different back then, but from what I can tell it's the usual left-wing Atheism that most of the media holds these days. I dunno.... That's not to say it didn't have it's moments. He was a really funny guy. And he's right, though. I've never met a Gideon.........

Judged against the exceptional standards of the group's own catalog, this album is not so good. The Buzzcocks, after all, invented and perfected a very smartass, insanely catchy ideal of poppy, ultra-energetic punk rock and half your favorite bands have stolen from them liberally. But judged against other reunion records, it's definitely a fun album, and is easily their best post-breakup album. Steve Shelley's infamous high-pitched vocals sound more like a strange old geezer than a hyperactive kid, but that should not come as much of a surprise. Not surprisingly, the lyrics range from society to love. The songs are mostly mid-tempo, pleasant punk rock. You could do a lot worse, but they could do a lot better. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
It started in 1976 and is still here - thirty years of sex, punk and some of the greatest pop music ever made. In 2006, as British punk rock reaches its official 30th birthday, few of its founding fathers will be around to celebrate. However, one band remains as resilient in 2006 as they were thirty years earlier. The band that brought punk out of London and into the sticks by inviting the Pistols to play their native Manchester twice during the summer of '76; released the first independent punk EP, thereby inspiring every label henceforth from Rough Trade to Factory, Postcard, Creation and beyond; and the band that has had a direct influence on bands such as REM, Orange Juice and The Smiths, making them a band whose cultural importance is too enormous to quantify properly
are still rocking 30 years later! This is a feat in itself considering their chequered history of run-ins and walk-outs. Flat-Pack Philosophy marks the fifth release from the Buzzcocks - Pete Shelley, Steve Diggle, Tony Barber, and Phillip Barker. In true punk fashion, Flat-Pack Philosophy packs 14 songs into 36 minutes and in places sounds like the best bits of every classic Buzzcocks single carefully welded together. It continues the great Buzzcocks tradition of romantic metaphors and of Diggle's implicit literary references, and will certainly continue the ongoing success of this band. With the release of Flat-Pack Philosophy, the Buzzcocks can officially declare themselves punk's strongest survivors, if not necessarily its sole survivor. In 2006, the band that started a thousand others is still making music in a different kitchen than anybody else.

Respectable reunion-era album.......2006-04-02
This sounds pretty much like the last one, the self-titled "Buzzcocks." It shares the ups and downs of the other records released by the 90s-00s Shelley/Diggle/Barker/Barber line-up. This band's sound can't be compared with the 70's original four; it's like 1972 Velvets vs. the 1966 Warhol-era line-up, or The Fall now vs. 1978! That is, similarities remain, the lead singer(s) are still identifiable and appealing, but also the production's shifted and the sound's more radio-friendly--to a degree among "cult" bands--where I place Buzzcocks proudly.
Since I was around as an older teen when the Buzzcocks made their splash, I admit that I will always hear their later albums as filtered through my 17-year-old ears that listened to the needle dropping down on "Another Kitchen." Giving this four stars is my ranking its consistency with other records from this second line-up, not comparing this to their other albums; on its own terms it holds up well against whatever's the young competition, but does not, honestly, stand out overwhelmingly to crush the opposition. Parts of it reminded me of The Undertones' "Get What You Need" reunion record: accomplished pop-punk by seasoned vets. It's a good, solid, but not jaw-dropping, record.
This preamble made, "Flat Pack" does have, as all the recent records do, some strong, punchy, dynamic songs--the best here is the opening title track. Shelley, as always, is in studio the more memorable vocalist and the clever lyricist. Diggle on record--in the original or the later band--suffers from being muffled on many of his tracks when he takes the mic. About three of his songs on FPP showcase his gruff, everyday bloke delivery of straightforward thoughts through simpler lyrics and more of a hard rock sound contrasting with Shelley's songs, which often display along with generally catchier poppish-punk riffs many hints of his solo albums' experimentation with found sounds, keyboards, and electronics. This much-needed fresh angle, highlighted on their overlooked album "Modern," is less prominent here, but does thicken the mix and provides a necessary density to counter Shelley's higher vocal trills and inimitably adenoidal phrasing.
The songs largely alternate, more or less, between the two vocalists. Barker's workmanlike drumming makes me miss Maher; it always meets the required beat, but lacks the original drummer's splash and insistent energy. Barber's bass, which in concert truly grabs the spotlight along with Diggle's vocals, on record does fine, but as with Diggle's singing, does not stand out on FPP above a serviceable support. The rhythm section does not leap out of the speakers on the Barber-produced discs. This is not meant to sound as harsh as it may seem; Diggle and Barber, from my observation, simply work better to project their strengths live rather than on record. Shelley, as I have explained, fills his songs with more filigree, and here Barber's production--he's also credited with arrangements, plays more to the quartet's unified energy.
It is promising to hear both singers on the last track, "Heaven & Hell", and I wish more of the band's songs would integrate both lead vocalists. Since the reunion band's albums have placed Diggle much more noticeably and given him many more songs than the original albums had featured, the back-and-forth shuffle of these album's tracks do make for a bit of unevenness. Perhaps future efforts will take more of a two-singer approach to more songs, rather than keeping the two singers and their contributions so separated. I predict that these songs will gain force in concert; 36 minutes and 14 songs does mean that at least listeners will not be bored!
Great hooks, crunch and vocals........2006-03-09
The Buzzcocks really have no right to be putting out albums as good as their last few at this point in their career, but I'm sure glad they do. I thought their last, self-titled album was an incredible and glorious punk rock album. This one isn't quite so good, but it's still head and shoulders above most punk bands half their age. I know of no other band that so perfectly balances the melodic and the bombastic. No, it's not "Singles Going Steady", but it's well worth the price.

Earth Shattering Bass.......2001-08-25
Well it's finally here, the long awaited Alpha & Omega release. First of all I'm always hungry for remixes, but lately I find that Alpha & Omega has a bit too much remixes of the same material. I thought this CD would have been all brand new material, instead it's 95% remixes, however I must admit that these are some of the most serious Bass Heavy, Earth Shattering Mixes that I've ever heard in a dub recording. The tracks are totally disguised in such a way that they sound rightiously fresh. My favorite track is Dub of Purpose which was remixed by "Another Sound System Experience" who totally reconstruct the rhythm to tear down the walls. It's only because I recognized Nishka's vocals I knew it was the remix of the song show me a purpose. I wish I could be there in England to hear the Mighty Jah Shaka lick these sound system burners in the dance. This CD is also much better than their last BSI offering "Mystical Things" If you are an Alpha & Omega fan or just love Dub, pick this up, play loud and feel the vibes of some of the finest british Dub N'Roots. Nuff Respect!
