Despite their close working relationship on a number of landmark albums, arranger-bandleader Nelson Riddle rarely appeared onstage with Frank Sinatra. This disc captures one of those concerts, a legendary Seattle show with a set list drawn mainly from the string of classic LPs the singer was in the midst of making. In fine voice and emotional shading from "I Won't Dance" to "One for My Baby," Sinatra gives a dynamic, magnetic performance that makes one wish for a time machine. Far more rewarding than DCC's recent refurbishing of a Sinatra-Martin-Davis club gig on The Summit: In Concert, Sinatra '57 is a must. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Sinatra at his absolute Best!.......2007-04-28

For a number of years my friend and I have been doing a "Rat Pack" tribute in our band duo. As a Rat Pack fanatic, I've listened to many hours of Sinatra, Sammy, Deano, Bennett, et al, but as others have said of this recording, it clearly is GOLD! The band is very snappy and you can feel their cocky self-assured power in their music. Nelson Riddle is at his top form and the band and Sinatra perform perfectly as a single, silky, joined spirit. Sinatra's voice was strong, muscular, and expressive. At times he was powerful, and at other times, like when he sang "One for my Baby" he nearly whispered his lines to his 'bartender' of a lost love, and you could hear a pin drop in that auditorium.

And the auditorium--Perfect ambiance! The artists who remastered this gem perfectly captured the reverb and crispness of the performance. This is as near to heaven a professional singer could ask for.

I can't even imagine what it would have been like back in '57 when those lucky souls attended the concert. But then, again, music was excellent everywhere. Food was good in the restaurants for bargain prices, and guys and dolls dressed up. Guys in suits and dolls in dresses and heels and smelled NICE! How I wish that was true today.

Sinatra ruled the airwaves in 57 and his class was only magnified by his easy, self-assured humor and jokes he made on stage, some at his own expense. "Some guys got so drunk they kept stepping on my fingers!"

Expensive or not I'm getting this CD. You will not find a finer live concert for any price. If you are so lucky to have a chance to buy it, snag it while you can. Some day the price won't matter and you'll have a recording you'll treasure the rest of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Good - despite Sinatra's cold.......2005-03-01

This is the best of the Sinatra live albums I have. Nelson Riddle didn't tour with Sinatra much, because he was usually too busy with studio work; this Seattle date is one of the few instances in which he did and in which it was recorded.

This album excels despite, oddly, Sinatra's voice. In 1957 it hadn't started to slide yet, but on this particular date he was a bit hoarse. As he tells the crowd, he'd been partying pretty hard in general and specifically the night before. (Something having to do with Crown Royal whiskey. "We snared a batch of that stuff last night.") He fails to make a high note the first time it comes around in "My Funny Valentine" - "stay, little valentine, stay ..." - but makes it on the second try. His voice in general warms as the evening develops. This performance nicely captures his showmanship at the height of his career - his timing, his rapport with the crowd and with his band and a fair cross-section of some of his classic songs. Here is one of his, or anyone's, best renditions of "Just One of Those Things", with all the affection and bittersweetness of an ending fling coming through. The medley of quiet songs leading off the second half of it is fine. I don't know why this CD was released with a 24-karat gold recording, which makes it a lot more expensive; but if you're serious about Sinatra, you want to own this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Sinatra CD in My Collection.......2003-12-20

I must say that this by far is the best Sinatra CD in my collection. I must have 10-12 Sinatra CDs and several vinal records. The sound is clear, the conversation crisp, the music wonderful. Personally, I could have done without the 24 Karat Gold nonsense and paid about $15-20 for the CD, but the music is great. My only complaint is that the interior case was completely shattered upon delivery. I had only listened to half the disc when I wrote this review, and if that other half is horrible, I'll still be happy I bought the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Sinatra's "Missing" Masterpiece--Remastered.......2003-12-04

This fine CD of Sinatra's celebrated Seattle, Washington concert on June 9, 1957 is a reissue of a limited edition Jazz Hour CD briefly released in 1995, and sadly now long out of print. It is pricey, but well worth the money. The performance itself--featuring impeccable vocals, superb arrangements, and crisp playing from Capitol Record's top studio musicians, who were enlisted for the tour, is a highlight of Sinatra's career. The advantage of this newer release over the 1995 version is that the sound quality, which was always remarkable for its era, is now absolutely stunning. Ever a completist, I own them both--and I would wholeheartedly recommend either one. Since this gold CD is also a limited edition and has already been available for a couple of years, I'd suggest that you pick it up before it becomes as rare as its predecessor. Whether you are a Sinatra fanatic or a casual fan, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A great concert expertly remastered by Steve Hoffman.......2003-06-16

Here's the "skinny" on this disc: The concert is great. Sinatra's voice is wonderful and his attitude is playful. The sound quality of this disc is excellent, remastering engineer Steve Hoffman giving this a very warm and liquid quality, in part by using vacuum tubes in the mastering process. Highly recommended and one of the few DCC gold discs that can still be found readily at a reasonable price.

Drunken, tacky, and undoubtedly a piece of history, The Summit: In Concert captures a 1962 Chicago supper-club show by the three biggest names in the Rat Pack. The apparently unedited tape clocks in at more than 78 minutes, with plenty of the trio's banter preserved--for better or worse. (Sinatra: "Shut up, Sam, and sit in the back of the bus!" Davis: "Jewish people don't sit in the back of the bus!" Sinatra: "Jewish people own the bus!") There's some fine singing, of course; though Sinatra seems to be going through the motions during most of his solo miniset, his "When Your Lover Has Gone" is a highlight, as is Davis's "Out of this World." More an intriguing document than an entertaining repeat listen--thanks in part to the anarchic interruptions of many of the second half's songs--Summit is for those who already own the guys' truly worthy recordings. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Wish I was there...............2002-07-10

A must for any rat pack fan. Just wish I was there to see it live. It seems like a time we'll never see again. Too Bad. Worth a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible collection........2001-12-05

Firstly unless I'm mistaken (which of course has
never happened before ;) ) this title is also
the live at the villa in chicago 1962 two disc
collection.

This collection made me a fan of Sammy Davis Jr.
I have been a longtime Sinatra fan and knew Sammy
could dance and sing but until hearing this I
never realized just how talented the man was.
Sammy really is the star of the show on these discs.
Frank, of course, is Frank and Dean was his usual suave
self..but Sammy was the star with his wonderful singing
voice and impressions. By all means stop everything and
get this set, it's more than worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Summit:In Concert(Live)-Sinatra/Martin/Davis.......2001-12-01

This is a must have for any die hard fans of the Rat Pack--particularly those of us who weren't fortunate enough to be around during their glory years. As Dino said "if you want singing by an album", but if you want to experience the swagger and charisma that was the rat pack at the height of their powers buy The Summit:In Concert. There's some quality vocalizing from all three--but what predominates is the silly, self-amused shtick for which these guys were known.Turn the lights down, mix a martini, and go back to a time when men were men, and these guys ruled!

5 out of 5 stars Martini Party In A Box.......2001-03-30

Invite your friends over, drink some martinis, and push play. The best party album I have ever heard. Play it over and over again - no one ever gets tired of listening to it. Now, how'd all these people getin-t-my room *hic*

5 out of 5 stars Fun was had by all.......2001-03-21

This is about the most fun you can have listening to a CD. This is not just a collection of songs. The entire show is captured, clowning around and all, to give you the feeling that you are sitting in the wings at this 1962 concert. Some of the reviews suggest that the second half of the CD, with the songs interrupted by jokes and often left unfinished, detracts from the album as a whole...don't listen to them! It adds to the feeling of being part of the fun happening on stage. This is one to listen to again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Ciccolini Knows Satie.......2004-06-02

Aldo Ciccolini is arguably the greatest interpreter of Erik Satie, and he can also be credited with rescuing the minimalist from certain obscurity with the recordings he made of the composer's music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. For years I have enjoyed selections of those performances and I figured it was time to upgrade to a more complete set. As a result, I recently got this title. Unfortunately, this 5CD box set from EMI Classics collects Ciccolini's digital remakes of Satie's Piano Works, and not the original recordings of which I had grown so fond. (I have since discovered that a French Import of the complete original recordings is available.) The overall difference is minimal (yes, pun intended!) but I have to give the nod to the analog performances because of a slightly warmer, brighter sound. Also with a first time recording, there is an intangible element in the charting of new territory that I feel is never quite recaptured when revisited. With that being said, for the pieces requiring two pianists, the digital accounts are superior. While Ciccolini overdubbed himself originally, here he partners with Gabriel Tacchino to greater effect. In all, this is an excellent set by an unparalled master of Satie's music, but if I had to it over again I would have chosen the first incarnation.

5 out of 5 stars Fennell's masterpieces extend beyond Tokyo.......2004-08-05

Fennell has produced the most extraordinary recordings with the Tokyo Kosei winds and this cd is no exception. I purchased this cd to get a wider view of his conducting brilliance. Every song is played with perfection (besides a few trumpet blips on A Chorus Line Medley). If you have never heard Carmen Dragon's version of America the Beautiful you must. Having played it several times it is a wonderfully composed piece. The Dallas brass ring triumphant throughout this cd. And the woodwinds are exceptional. This is a great value and you must purchase it if you are a fan of wind ensemble music. The disc is full of energetic pieces typical of Fennell's music selections.

5 out of 5 stars Fennell Finds Gold on the Beach.......2000-07-02

This 1994 recording of Frederick Fennell and the Dallas Wind Symphony is nothing short of outstanding. It combines Broadway and classical pieces with a wide variety of just plain entertaining fare. Beguine for Band highlights the mellow sounds of woodwinds sprinkled with the excitement of brass and percussion. The Chorus Line medley is Broadway all the way. Numerous seldom heard but utterly enjoyable pieces round out the album. It is sure to delight anyone who has played in a high school or college band. But its entertainment value is not limited to those folks. It's a good choice for everyone who wants to add fun to their music listening.

In 1947, the American Heritage Foundation arranged for the original Declaration of Independence and other historic national documents to tour the country on a red, white, and blues Freedom Train. Paul Robeson recorded a poem Langston Hughes wrote about the train that is presented here along with a 1957 concert Robeson, accompanied by pianist Alan Booth, gave over transatlantic cable for the South Wales Miners. Robeson, who spoke 20 languages, sings one song in Welsh. A highlight is the Welsh Treorchy Male Voice Choir serenading Robeson with "We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside." There is some static on the recording, but not enough to obscure Robeson's magnificent performance. --Stanley Booth

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Privilege to own this rare recording!.......2001-08-06

I call this an extraordinary privilege because it's an artifact of a man who fought for freedom with the fervor of Martin Luther King, Jr, but without his fame. This is a recording of a Paul Robeson concert which should have been performed in Wales. However, although Paul Robeson was a U.S. citizen, he had his passport denied for 8 years because of his civil rights actions. Robeson never allowed the voice of freedom to be stilled. The concert went on over the newly installed transatlantic phone cable! The recording begins most appropriately with Paul Robeson performing the poem by Langston Hughes, "Freedom Train", with strength and truth that led Paul Robeson in becoming a giant in human rights. This recording clarifies that emotions were high on both sides of the Atlantic! The voices of Robeson's baritone and the Welsh men's choir, fantastic! Eyes surely were streaming with tears at the conclusion of this 1957 concert in both New York and Porthcrawl, Wales, just as mine overflowed when Robeson offers his Thanks to the Welsh people and promises to see them soon, The choir, across the ocean, adds their promise of invitation with "We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside". Words from this reviewer are nothing. You must become a listener yourself. That's the only way to have this extraordinary privilege!

5 out of 5 stars A Chance to Eavesdrop on an Extraordinary Occasion.......1998-08-11

I was in Junior High when this incredible concert occurred, and I remember hearing about it without understanding all the whys and wherefores. What a powerful experience it was to listen to this for the first time.

For those who aren't familiar with the history, the well-written program notes tell the story of Paul Robeson and how he was blacklisted in the US, had a career in Britain where he met up with and made a film about the South Wales coal miners, and how the State Department froze his passport and wouldn't let him leave the country for a number of years, not even to perform at this singing festival in Wales.

The trans-Atlantic phone cable was new on the scene, so the festival organizers arranged for Paul Robeson to "appear" by telephone. The CD includes the introduction by the organizer, selections by Paul Robeson, and selections by a Welsh choir, singing for him. In the final selection, the audience of 5,000 people in Wales sings, "We'! ll Keep A Welcome in the Valleys" - a very poignant selection under the circumstances.

The recording of the concert was made on the Welsh side, with Mr. Robeson's voice coming through the phone wire, so the quality of the recording may not satisfy some listeners. Still, the power of Mr. Robeson's voice comes across loud and clear, as does the emotion of the occasion.

This is a must for Welsh-Americans and African-Americans, as well as anyone who wants to see what the US government was capable of doing to its citizens back in the Cold War days.

3 out of 5 stars Precursor of "Muzak".......2006-03-11

Erik Satie cultivated his fame as an obscure pianist within the smokey cabernet-cafes high on the hill of Montmartre - a trendy, artist haunt in the shadow of Sacre Coere cathdrel overlooking 19th-century Paris. His novel music, isolated lifestyle and unusual fashion (always a dark velvet suit and derby) were eccentric yet endeared him to - not only to the poets, writers and artists of Montmartre - but to the Parisian musical elite. Another oddity of Satie was his contentment - and sometimes insistance - that his music be relegated to the background as to not interfere with patron's festivities. Where Beethoven or Wagner would have cringed to have their compositions played as "musical wallpaper" (or featured on a "Relaxation" recording like this), Erik Satie would likely have been pleased. In this respect, his music was perhaps the precursor of modern "Muzak" heard by many an elevator user.

Over three-forths of Satie's compositions are for solo piano. Often he gave these pieces strange titles and programmic references - such as his most famous work, Gymnopedies, which is related to some ancient festival honoring Apollo. In fact, this gentle, melodic piece so charmed Debussy that he composed an orchestral version of it, emphasising its dreamy qualities. However, on this CD, this famous piece is heard four times in different variations, which presents a great risk of trivialization and weariness. That is one downfall of this collection.

Satie's music indeed does fit well with the "Relaxation" theme with its simple, slower-paced, child-like innocent melodies bathed in rich, yet austere harmonies. In this respect Satie's music is often downgraded by music critics as "lightweight compositions from a French eccentric." They have their point. But, the weary looking for some "nice music" will often find Satie's works a balm - free of pretention, complication and attitude. Yet, it was this simplicity and minimalistic approach that earned Satie the title, "The Precursor" as his textures and forms foreshadowed the minimalist music of John Cage and the Surrealism/Dada movements in art.

Like any, Satie's music is not for everyone. At times the repeated-note simplicity can be downright boring; other pieces can remind one of a player piano at the cabernet. Yet, many pieces have great charm and appeal once you get past their simplicity. So, overall, this CD is a decent sampling of Satie's music for piano - solo or with one or two other instruments - recorded in good sound quality. Also, there are few if any loud outbursts for those wanting to nod off in their relaxation. But, the overplayed Gymnopedies pieces are unfortunate - typical when the public gets hold of a popular piece and plays it to death.

2 out of 5 stars complete but lacking.......2005-06-14

While I am a fan of Thibaudet in general, he just seems lost here. Satie is deceptively difficult to judge as a performer, the music is at times mercurial or static, profound or frivolous, or all of the above. Yet one hardly needs to underline the oddness, it's perfectly revealed if you play it straight.
While some misread notes suggest he may not really know these pieces, Thibaudet manages to project something less than a competent sight reading. In such an endeavor he would certainly get the right feel occasionally by accident. Instead, he regularly puts the wrong foot forward, with odd accents and effects getting in the way, perhaps trying too hard to add spin to music whose mysteries refuse to unfold under such duress.
I would recommend collecting a number of different performers: Reinbert DeLeeuw, Pascal Roge, Anne Queffelec, JoAnna MacGregor and Michel Legrand have all made worthy contributions to the recent discography and their combined recordings would make a pretty-near complete survey.

3 out of 5 stars good for completists, but..........2004-05-18

I jumped at the chance to buy this set; a new digital recording of Satie's complete solo piano music. I had admired Jean-Yves Thibaudet in the past and had seen him perform Messiaen's "Turangalila Symphony"; a great performance. However, after listening to this set for three straight months, I'm rather frustrated with it, mostly on aesthetic grounds, since I can't deny Thibaudet's talents; I just disagree with some of his interpretations.

To start, most of the shorter, "lite" pieces are performed very well on disc 4. Even the most popular, (Gymnopedies, Gnossiennes) are excellent. I am also thankful I now have performances of "Uspud" and many of Satie's conservatory assignments, played expertly and with good humor. For these, the set is worth having.

But now, the bad news. As I have complained about in the past with Thibaudet's Ravel discs, I'm frankly rather put-off by his inexplicable, pointless staccato in many of the pieces. "Petite Overture a la Danser" is one of my favorite Satie miniatures, and here Thibaudet botches it by playing it way too fast with no pedal. It sounds like a joke, and I think he totally misses the point of the piece. In the "Nazareen" preludes, he adds his own extreme dynamics which are not indicated in the original scores, and the effect seems like a cheap attempt to add "spice" to what are supposed to be meditative sound constructions, based on poetry forms rather than classical forms.

"Prelude to the Heroic Gate of Heaven" is taken far too slow, and Thibaudet completely cuts out the "Curtain" coda in the original Salabert edition for no apparent reason; he seems determined to give the piece a more "proper" ending, and for this listener, it's a terrible, narcissistic, and disrespectful miscalculation.

I will keep this set since it is a complete document, flawed though it may be. But I still must insist that the best living interpreter of Satie's piano music is the ever-underrated Reinbert DeLeeuw, who is completely in-tune with Satie's sly magic. His tempos may be slow, his dynamics few, but that's the whole point; this is highly personal music, and DeLeeuw has an aesthetic I can personally agree with. For an audible explanation of what I'm talking about, compare the performances of "Petite Overture a la Danser" by DeLeeuw and Thibaudet, and you'll see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, its worth five discs.......2003-12-17

Each disc averages about 75 minutes of music. Over six hours of Satie? Definitely yes. If you have an affinity for Satie's classic pieces you should not pass up this set. There are so many standout pieces in so many wonderful styles you can only leave this set with wonder. And Thibaudet seems made for this music. The best interpreter of Satie that I've heard. His technique is amazing with such a range of subtle fingering tempo and dynamics. Its as though I've heard some of these for the first time with new shocks of emotion I hadn't experienced before. Not to be missed.
