Falls Short Of The Glory.......2007-05-18
I must warn you up front: tracks 2,10,11,15,16,17 and 18 are ALTERNATE TAKES, not the masters you are probably use to. And it is NOT advertised on the package! So if you know these songs by heart, you will either be pleased to have them or very annoyed. Just to warn you.
The transfers are fine but the song selection is missing a bunch of songs that I would consider essential to a "Very Best" collection of Benny's RCA period. It is just not one without "Don't Be That Way", "Loch Lomond", "Goodnight My Love", "Goodbye", "Down South Camp Meeting", "Changes" and "Body & Soul". I would say go with "Pure Gold" or "Sing, Sing, Sing" instead.
Very Best of Benny Goodman........2007-05-08
To appreciate this one has to have danced to this orchectra. Been there and done that. Most talent heard in one group---ever. No omne has ever come cliose to Benny Goodman playing the clarinet.
The Very Best of Benny Goodman.......2007-04-11
I was a young teenager during Benny Goodman's era. My father loved the music and we listened to it frequently. What a great instrumentalist Mr. Goodman was! This is a terrific collection of his best songs.
The Very Best is a Great One!.......2007-03-22
The only band leader who can hold a candle to Glenn Miller!
The Best of Benny Goodman.......2007-02-22
I love the Big Band era and especially Benny Goodman. This is a good quality remastering of a variety of Goodman hits. I bought it for certain specific cuts I needed for a seminar I was giving, but it would be a good choice for someone just becoming acquainted with Benny Goodman.

A fun mix.......2007-06-22
Sad to see how the swing craze has died off, it produced some really great stuff.
This album is a nice mix of several more obscure swing bands, and the songs are a good range of styles and material. If you enjoy swing, this CD should be satisfying. I bought it on a whim and have enjoyed it. Some highlights to watch out for: "Ruby Mae" by Indigo Swing, where the talented musicians from that now-defunct band create the musical sound of riding the rails on a cross-country train, and "Tossin' and Turnin'" by the Cigar Store Indians, a rockabilly romp reminiscent of Brian Setzer when he was still with the Stray Cats.
Indigo Swing's stuff is still available too, and is great. Their latter two albums, "All Aboard" and "Red Light!" are well worth a listen--or several. Enjoy :)

The Best of the "Big Bands".......2005-03-27
first; I never thought I'd be reviewing anything but....I just had to comment about Elgart. Back in the late 50's, & early 60's, I toured with Ralph Marterie. He sent two bands on the road and I played 10 cities. We finished a job in Cincinnati's Moonlight Gardens and I stayed back to catch Elgart. WOW.....we couldn't compete. The arrangements, instrumentality, and Band presence could not be followed by the likes of us. I've been a fan ever since, and have worn out two C.D.'s. One question however, what did he (Les Elgart), have against piano players?
Smooth Perfection........2000-11-29
A must for anyone interested in "Big Band" perfection. My father introduced Les & Larry music to me 30 years ago. A moving reunion. A CD that brings back memories for many. Elgart "style" is a true original. Add this disc to your collection, you won't regret it. Smoooooth!
Les & Larry Elgart Swing the Big Band Hits in Style!.......2000-06-13
I enjoyed hearing the big band hits in "Elgart Style" on this excellently compiled CD! The Elgart brothers were unique in their sound and remain classic today. Buy this one, you won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
Simply the Best............2005-12-03
Unfortunately for Harry James, when great trumpeters are discussed among the less-informed, people always talk about Miles, Dizzy, Satchmo, Maynard, etc. (And well they should!) But unless you are a big-band afficiando or a trumpet player, Harry James doesn't come up on the short list. And it should. Harry is unjustly labeled as "schmaltzy" because he made a few bucks on his many hits for the record-buying public back in the 40's, but the truth is...Harry was a "Mutha"! No one...repeat....NO-ONE was as powerful, technically perfect, hard-swinging, and as versatile as Harry. Clark Terry even remarked that "Harry was a BITCH!" Miles loved Harry as well. Adolph Herseth confessed he was a big Harry James fan as a youth. So this collection should not be missed by anyone who digs big-band, or anyone considering what CD's to start their jazz collection. This CD will satisfy! BUT.....if you liked this, you will LOVE "Trumpet Blues- The Best of Harry James". There is a KILLER version of "James Session" that will nicely illustrate the power and technique of Harry James.
Harry's trumpet.......2005-09-29
Harry was one of the great trumpters. It was a pleasure to listen to his best works again
Big band era music.......2005-08-25
Harry James and his orchestra were among the best of the swing era, and this CD offers a truly wonderful sampling.
Beautiful sound quality!.......2003-12-25
Wow! Have I ever heard Harry's trupet blaring so gorgeously? The sound on this CD will astound you, especially everyone who has spent time listening to the James orchestra on vinyl. There are few pops, hisses or buzzes on this recording, it's clean throughout and a total joy.
So many "greatest hits" compilations miss the mark either in quality or song selection. But this disc lives up to its billing as the "Best" of the James orchestra. It contains one of the stellar and swingiest tunes of the Big Band era, "Ciribiribin," (though this version is inferior to the more famous "single" version). It's hard to listen to this song and not appreciate the brilliant arrangement and musicianship displayed here. Along with Goodman's "Sing, Sing Sing" and Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" this has got to be in the top ten of any Big Band all-time greatest list.
It's a pity that James has been somewhat forgotten today and shoved aside in preference of Benny, Glenn and Artie. Was his band as good as those giants? No, but this disc shows that his band could swing, had a phenomenal musician named Harry whose virtuosity remains amazing. This is a must have album for anyone serious about the Big Band era.
A Dozen Jewels from the Hi-Fi Remakes.......2001-08-18
This increasingly rare issue (pressed to CD in 1990) is comprised of 12 cuts that were enormous instrumental successes for James during the war years, and which Capitol decided to remake in high-fidelity sound. Harry's theme song, Ciribiribin, gets a slightly different treatment, while other tunes are merely augmented by way of the improved sound, including Carnival, the best arrangement Billy May ever wrote (and THAT is saying something). These 1955 sessions have subsequently been released in their entirety by Mosaic Records, in a box set with Gene Krupa's 1950s sessions. The personnel is impeccable as one would expect, including the greatest of all lead trumpeters Conrad Gozzo (who ironically was often compared to James). Love James but wince at those sappy vocals? Nary a songbird appears on this CD, so don't sweat it. (And incidentally, don't feel like too much of a whipper-snapper if you never cared for big band vocals. Many of the folks around during that time had a similar opinion, and the band leaders to a man generally despised singers except as juke-box money-makers .) The Big Band Era was at the end of its heyday by the time these recordings were made, but as you'll hear, Harry James still had something more to give.

Customer Reviews:
Get this with "The War Years".......2006-04-06
Both items-, "The Best of the Big Bands" and "The War Year" are remarkable. They contain some extraordinarily rare recordings by famous artists such as a young "Doris Day" singing "Sentimental Journey" "Bing Crosby" singing "Shoo Shoo Baby," the latter being a wonderful piece of live history, and "Cab Calloway's - Minnie The Moocher"
Many of the tracks were originally "V-Discs" and intended for eventual destruction. That is, each "V-Disc" was to entertain the troops (of the greatest generation) for an allotted time, and then each fragile disc was to be melted-down.
I think, one can't own one box set without the other - they ought to be bought together to get an all-inclusive experience of the era.
However, don't look for flawless Glenn Miller recordings - or any other Big Band for that matter - in these box sets. Every recording in these box sets are presented in their original format - and what could be better! Personally, I don't want any of these recordings so clean that they are deprived of their original charm. Digital remastering can be taken a bit too far sometimes.
I've had to borrow this set for a longtime from a dear friend, but now I'll have my own.
An excellent collaction from the big band era.......2005-10-08
I have to disagree with the previous reviewer. Great collection, yes, but NOT by Glenn Miller. Although there are some excellent Glenn Miller songs included, this collection has most of the Big Band theme songs played by the original artists, and a collection like this is hard to find. So if you have any interest in the music from this era, or want a bit of nostalgia, this is the set for you.
Great.......2000-11-25
This is another awsome set of tracks by Gleen Miller. I loved listening to him and his band play the original jazz master pieces. This is a great addition to anyone's collection of fabulous jazz C.D.'s

Good but not the best!.......2005-06-21
Nice compilation of swing.
First volume is presenting Glann Miller' hits. I didn't know that Pennsylvania 6-5000 and Chattanooga Choo Choo were recorded without vocals.
Second volume is presenting Benny the King Goodman. Mostly fifties material. I miss Sing Sing Sing and few others.
The third volume is a mixture of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Woody Hermann, Duke Ellington and Count Basie's live material. Sometimes a little too jazzy. Sound on whole compilation is great but this set doesn't include all the Best Of The Big Bands material.
Good, but not great!.......2001-07-17
I am an avid listener of big band music. I know what original recordings sound like, and these are NOT the original recordings. Although the music is still nice, and these were performed by good musicians, I can still hear and notice the obvious difference from the originals. It just doesn't have the smoothness and "swing & sway" associated with the "real thing." It's a decent collection, but I prefer original recordings, with the original sound.
Disappointed!.......2001-02-19
Being a fan of big bands, I looked forward to playing this CD set, especially the Glenn Miller portion. Unfortunately, I am familiar with Glenn Miller and these renditions were poor imitations. The notes on the box gave no hint as to who made the recordings. Other than a brief mention that the CDs were "made in Canada," I have no idea of the recording artists. But I strongly suspect that they are NOT original recordings, and NOT the latter day Glenn Miller band. This CD set is just okay. But, for a few dollars more I would prefer the "real thing." Color me "Disappointed!"
Great CD-set.......2001-02-17
This Box Set is a very valuable one (3 CDs for the price of 1 and what Cds!) and it contains some of the biggest moments in swing jazz, the genre I've just begun to explore. I think it is a very good starting point for all who aren't into the genre yet but want to know more about it. Before listening to this set I only knew "Take the A-Train", "Chu-Chu" and some standard classics but this opens the horizon and makes me want to know more about swing jazz.
A very great deal with a very great sound!.......2001-01-25
This box set seemed too good to be true. However, to my pleasure I found that this collection was in fact as awesome as it seems. With all of the classics from Count Basie (an awesome recording of Ain't Misbehavin') this set needs to be a part of any Jazzer's collection. The only flaw that I saw was that some of the recordings were not very high quality because they are so old; it only occurs with a couple of songs like In the Mood and Little Brown Jug. It makes up with it by having such incredible recordings of Mood Indigo and Bugle Time.

Wee Bonnie Baker Rules.......2003-11-15
This is another fine example of the CD's being released by Collector's Choice. They put together great compilations of artists that the other labels ignore. I love all the cuts on this disk. Wee Bonnie Baker has a great feel for the cute, slightly suggestive lyrics in songs like "If I could be the dummy on your knee" and "My resistance is low". Her innocent girlish voice works well with the upbeat tempo of the Orrin Tucker led band. If you like Big Band and Swing and are looking for a CD to brighten up a dreary day, give this a try. It's sure to bring a smile to your face.
I'm really glad I got this one!.......2003-01-26
This is one of our most often played swing-jazz records; we just don't get tired of it. The upbeat musicality of it gets everyone in listening range into the mood. Orrin's singing is suave and warm while Bonnie Baker's lyrics are playful and cute. It's interesting that Bonnie Baker of New Orleans was Louis Armstrong's recommendation to Orrin, and that is how she came to be with Orrin Tucker. The simple, easy music styling of this record is very pretty, and it really swings.

I'll Get By, Harry James.......2005-03-26
Harry James' band perhaps isn't remembered as well as Glenn Miller or Benny Goodman, but he was one of the Goodman sidemen who left to seek fame and fortune on his own. And he deserved every bit of it. With his trumpet playing and his marriage to Betty Grable, he had a lot going for him. This collection will appeal even to listeners who (while they may not have heard of Harry James) will say, "Hey, I've heard that number before." The sound quality is pretty good, mostly.
This collection is simply superb. Listen to "Trumpet Blues" for a 1942 killer-diller! "I'll Get By" offers a great vocal by the very young Dick Haymes with an instrumental break in between. "Sleepy Lagoon" is absolutely dreamy in it's introduction (a'la Debussy) and a classic performance by James and his golden trumpet. If you wish to dig deeper into James, try the eloquent "You Made Me Love You," his first really big hit; listen to "Cherry" (1942) "Autumn Serenade" (1945) and lastly "The Mole," his 1955 version; it's the supreme epitome & definition of swing and all it's glory; the radio program "The Swingin' Years" used it as their theme and it was my VERY favorite LONG before I heard the broadcasts!; it's truly a classic among classics. James was my second favorite Big Band (My #1 is Glenn Miller). His records with Helen Forrest and his best instrumentals are legendary and they really DO stand the test of time. Listen to Helen Forrest sing "I Remember You" and you'll agree! The other vocalists on here include Kitty Kallen and Betty Grable-James.
Harry James Best of Big Bands ck45341.......2002-02-08
Excellent music from the Cd, if you can stand the many skips and stops, for the first third of the entire CD. I tried to contact you for an exchange to a good Harry James Cd and at same time wanted to order another CD of Frankie Carle. What a frustration experience trying to contact you with the my requirements. If you are intersted tel me how to do this. Make it simple as I am have only a gradudate Industrial Engineer.
Boy, could this guy play a trumpet..........2002-01-08
One of my favorite musicians and for good reasons. Harry James probably had control over the trumpet better then anyone in his time! I would say the band he had in 1943 was the best. And the female singers were excellent also. Helen Forrest, Kitty Kallen and Betty Grable. Dick Haymes did the male singing. This album shows off the band and singers very well with songs like "I've heard that song before", " I cant begain to tell you," Ciribiribin" to name a few. I would say to anyone who liked the music of this era to buy this album. Dont think you could go wrong.

One of the best big bands of the '40s - a good collection........1999-07-31
Harry James' big band perhaps isn't remembered as well as the Miller, Goodman, Basie, or Ellington bands, but he was one of the Goodman sidemen - drummer Gene Krupa was another - who left to seek fame and fortune on their own. And he deserved every bit of it. His trumpet playing, his good looks, his marriage to Betty Grable - he had a lot going for him. This collection will appeal even to listeners who, while they may not have heard of Harry James, will say, "Hey, I've heard that number before." Included are several vocals by Helen Forrest and Kitty Kallen - and a Betty Grable number. The sound quality is pretty good, mostly.

Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra.......2007-05-07
Great muscic from a great era. My favorite is "I want to be happy cha cha". They don't make music like they useed to.
Incomplete and misleading.......2000-08-27
It's a misnomer to claim this record represents "The Best" of Tommy Dorsey. How can any collection that makes this claim omit "Opus number 1," arguably Dorsey's greatest hit? All of the songs here are ballads, there are no up-tempo or swing inclusions which is baffling. In addition, these are *not* the original recordings! Instead of playing the standard (and superior) 1930's version of I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, this album throws on a sub-standard 1951 version of the song. What a disappointment.
If you are sampling Dorsey records and you started off with this disc, you would get a completely erroneous impression of his body of work. Dorsey produced some fine ballads, but he was much more multi-faceted that than and could really swing. This record does not show that side of him, which is frustrating.
Tommy Dorsey made some brilliant music in the 30's and 40's but you won't find it here. This is an inferior compilation of schmaltzy ballads and later recordings which just don't capture Dorsey's magic.
Enjoyed it very much; just music, no vocal is what I like........1998-12-03
Big band music is one of my favorites. Thank you

The best Glenn Miller has EVER sounded.......2007-01-07
GLENN MILLER * THE BEST OF THE LOST RECORDINGS AND THE SECRET BROADCASTS has the finest sound quality of any 1940s performances that you will ever encounter. Surface noise and distortion seem non-existent on these sides-- subtle tonal shading on muted trumpets and the snarl of vibrant high-hats will delight you. Crisp, pounding brass is everywhere, delicate strings as well as all background instruments can clearly be heard.
Fourteen pages of extensive liner notes, band personnel and photos are provided. Many of Miller's biggest hits are here: "In The Mood," "Moonlight Serenade," "Little Brown Jug," "A String Of Pearls," "Tuxedo Junction" and "American Patrol." There's even a cover of a song from the brand new hit Broadway musical, "Oklahoma."
Get ready to enjoy Captain Glenn Miller and his two superbly swinging military big bands as you have never experienced them before. Highest recommendation.

The Best Sound of American Music.......2001-01-03
This was the best Glenn Miller CD I have ever listened to and I have all of them. It was a wonderful chance to hear these lost and precious recordings of an American war hero and musical prodigy. I teach band at an excellent high school that is the best in the state right now. We play all Glenn Miller and this CD has many songs I used that helped us to win state last year. It has so many technical as well as musical aspects that are not heard in any music today. I am amazed at the skill of not only Glenn Miller's conducting, but the band's skill. It's also great swing dancing music. You won't regret buying this CD, I guarantee it.
