5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Chanson.......2007-04-15

This collection of Yiddish songs sung by Chava Alberstein is one of the finest in the Yiddish catalogue. Her richness and clarity will touch everyone, even those not familiar with Mama Loshen or those with a poor memory (even my mother with dementia lit up when she heard the singing!).

As others have commented it would have been nice to have translations or transliterations to sing along. Nonetheless, you will not be disappointed.

A GREAT complement to this CD is one from Theodore Bikel (Treasury of Yiddish Folk and Theatre Songs; Remastered on Rhino RHM 27827). Although originally recorded in the 1950s and 1960s, this remastered CD contains many of the selections of Alberstein as well as translations and transliterations. Their respective interpretation (and accompanyment) creates an incredible concert and joy to the ears! Purchase Both! and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars unmatched emotional power.......2004-10-29

chava albersteins shines in this remarkanle collection.this recording proves you don't have to understand the language to be moved by the delivery of the text.chava gets subtle yet powerful feeeling in every song.the voice is caressing, exhilirating, heavenly and earthbound all at once.a must have for any lover of world music or female vocalists in general.

5 out of 5 stars Songs of Laughter, Life, Love And A Voice Like Honey-Superb!.......2003-10-23

Chava Alberstein has a voice like honey, with an underlying smokiness that brings both traditional Yiddish songs and modern poems, newly set to music, to life. And the music on this spectacular CD will enrich your life, whether you understand Yiddish or have never heard it spoken before. The music is universal and the expression that Alberstein gives to the songs, old and new, will bridge the gap between the Yiddish culture and yours. Alberstein's voice is huge, and her tender and compassionate interpretations give added depth to the music.

The traditional "Oifen Pri'pe'tchik" is one of my favorites. My Nana used to sing it to me when I was a very little girl. Other old folk songs include: "A Keshenever" (The Song Of Kishinev), and "Oifn Veg Sh'tait a Boim," (On The Road There Is A Tree), is rousing klezmer sound at its best. "Tsigainer" (The Gypsy And His Fiddle) features wonderful gypsy violin music. And "Dona, Dona" is a lyrical folk song made popular by Joan Baez back in the 1960s. Modern interpretations include: "Avremi Marvikher," (Avremi the Con Man), by Mordechi Gebirtig, which was written before WWII, and is reminiscent of the pre-war cabaret sound. "Friling," (Spring) is a beautifully poignant song written by Shimke Katzerginsky in the Vilna Ghetto in 1943. "Unter Dy'ne Vy'se Shetern," (Under the White Stars), a prayer-lyric, was written by Israeli-Yiddish poet Abraham Sutsever, the bard of the Vilna Ghetto. And the stirring partisan song "Zog Nit Kein'mol" is an extraordinary addition to this compilation.

This is one of Ms. Alberstein's best CDs and one of my favorites. Sometimes the music will make you want to dance. Sometimes you will just want to listen. I promise you will always be moved by this very special sound.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-03-21

This is a beautiful album which I gave as a gift to my father; he loves it and plays it over and over again. For elderly Yiddish speakers, it can be a really moving experience; but even for those who are not so old (or do not speak the language) it is a powerful album of great beauty.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Unfamiliar Music.......2003-03-18

Chava Alberstein has a lovely, smoky voice. The songs on this cd are played and performed very well. Alberstein first became famous as a folk singer in the 1960s. She was born in Poland and immigrated to Israel as a young girl, so her folk and the folk music familiar to Americans is not exactly the same. The songs on this cd are traditional Yiddish songs from Central Europe - there is not a hint of Middle Eastern music. Strangely enough, the songs really sound like Berlin cabaret songs from the 1920s. I say strangely, because obviously the lyrics are far removed from that world. Many of the songs make reference to the Holocaust, though if you can't understand either Yiddish or German this will not be obvious.
I wish the lyrics had been included in the packaging - I can see why international labels selling world music don't bother including lyrics written in, say, Wolof or Swahili, but Yiddish is close enough to German to be understandable to a greater percentage of listeners. An explanation of each song's meaning is provided, however.
The songs come from a selection of her Israeli albums. The sound quality is acceptable, but some of the songs do sound a bit old.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful.......2007-06-26

While I do agree that the booklet which comes with this CD could be better (a whole paragraph seems to be missing after the description is cut off mid-sentence!), the music contained within is otherworldly in its beauty. If you like your choral music very simple and pure (accompanied by either only one understated instrument, or acapella) you'd find this very enjoyable. Lovely bright-toned tracks with a few hauntingly dissonant gems by Vasks thrown in will give you goosebumps.

    4 out of 5 stars Latvian Women's choir.......2005-10-05

listening to Dzintars is an interesting and surprising experience. i'm not too versed on chorale cd's; but this is one that demands your attention. the voices are absolutely gorgeous. so beautiful at times that it seems unearthly. i first heard this group of singers on a label sampler cassette tape many years ago. i had found the tape in a used bin for one dollar and i thought it would be fun to listen to some international music in my old car. well, Dzintars was the first performer on the tape. and it was the song "Blow, Wind, Blow" (the first track on this cd). when i first heard it, i almost had to pull my car off the road. it is such a blindingly beautiful sound that it sent chills throughout my entire body. i listened to that song about 10 times in a row and i could never get enough. the next day, i bought their full length release. this cd is a mixture of the women performing traditional Latvian songs and some more modern material. i think that the folk songs have a much stronger impact than the modern songs (which seem to have alot of strange avant-garde sounding shrill dissonance at times...which can be cool). but the beauty contained in songs like "The Sun Moves Quickly", "Where have You Been, Brother?", and "Blow, Wind, Blow" are worth the price of this cd alone.

2 out of 5 stars Beautifully sung but badly produced.......2004-01-12

I have nothing but praise for the performance of Dzintars, a Latvian women's chorus, but I am disappointed in how badly this project has been put together. First of all, it is unclear beforehand exactly what is on this CD. I was hoping for a program of traditional folk songs from this corner of the world (which has an amazing wealth of folk music). It turns out to be a mixture of traditional and modern, which is fine - but not what I really wanted. The titles are all given in English, but the chorus sings (thankfully) in Latvian. There is an acoompanying booklet, but it has little useful information and there are no texts and translations. What were the producers thinking??? A program of sung music in a foreign language MUST have texts and translations. The music is lovely, but who knows what they are singing about? The listener has no access to anything beyond pretty sounds. The producers of this CD, Rykodisc, deserve the blame for this botched release.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Gorgeous.......2003-03-12

I heard one of the tracks from this album on a sampler CD that I have since lost , and I was so completely enchanted I hunted down this CD. I wasn't disappointed. This is some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful choral music I have ever encountered-- and after six years it still hasn't gone stale on me. If you like choral music at all (maybe even if you don't), buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars I still love this cd!.......1999-07-21

I have had this album for a year now, and I am still just as amazed at it as I was when I peeled it out of its plastic wrap and set it in my cd player the first time. I can't put this music on and go wash dishes or sort laundry... I must sit and close my eyes and listen. It makes me want to go and buy a set of expensive headphones. This is a wonderful album, which I will force all of my friends to listen to, and which I strongly recommend to anyone who likes to listen to music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson

        Album Description

A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.

Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.

Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.

LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.

This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

        Album Description

The American Yiddish musical theater, a vibrant expression of the immigrant experience, became famous during its heyday in the 1920s-1940s. Combining the musical flavors of Viennese operetta, Tin Pan Alley, and eastern European nostalgia, these songs and duets are quintessential American popular music—with a Yiddish voice. Volume 1 spotlights the hit songs of Abe Ellstein, one of the genre's premier songwriters. New, historically accurate orchestrations re-create the unforgettable glory days of Yiddish radio and film, the uproarious vaudeville houses, and the thrill of a night at the theater on old New York's fabled "Second Avenue."

3 out of 5 stars Great collection, nice orchestrations.......2005-01-19

Great collection of yiddish musical theatre favorites. Unfortunately the singers were told to sing the songs in a supposedly "authentic" galician accent which in certain instances is completely incomprehensible to any yiddish speaker. The singers are quite good and the orchestrations are lush and well done.

5 out of 5 stars A Great New Addition to the Milken Archive!.......2004-03-10

This CD is perfect for fans of Yiddish folk music and newcomers to the genre alike. It is a great introduction to some of the treasures of the Yiddish stage. Especially worth noting are the four tracks sung by Elizabeth Shammash, whose rich Mezzo-Soprano voice brings a great sensitivity and tone to her pieces.

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, memorable!.......2006-05-29

I've had two copies of the LP of Theo Bikel's SONGS OF A RUSSIAN GYPSY lifted by "friends" possibly because it's not widely available. Just recently I found it was for a time available on CD. I see Amazon.com does not have it at this writing. Undeterred, I will look for it on line, it's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Good News! This Has Been Re-Issued.......2006-04-15

"Songs of a Russian Gypsy" along with "Songs of Russia old and New" has been re-issued again, this time by Collectors Choice Records (see my other review). I missed out on this re-issue, but moved quickly to get the new one on Collectors Choice. :)

5 out of 5 stars Just adding an amen.......2004-12-25

The other reviews have said it all. I've owned this on lp and cd for more than 40 years and it is still a favourite. I was going to buy it for a friend's birthday today and discovered it is out of stock and out of print. This is a real shame. I intend to write to whatever entity currently owns Electra records and I encourage others to do so too. This is an album that should be in print.

5 out of 5 stars There's so much more to Bikel than most people know........2003-04-15

Not only is Theodore Bikel an actor who just plain dominates any stage he's on -- (did you know he played the King in The King And I on broadway and there's a CD of that too!) but he spent his early youth learning folksongs of a couple dozen countries, mostly by ear. (see his autobiography which is also here on www.amazon.com)

He doesn't just sing, he performs the music -- and not just the music, but the whole cultural context behind the music as well -- in every single word.

I have this Russian Gypsy CD in my car, and I play it constantly. It is wonderful driving music on long, boring highways. I listen to this music while writing (I write novels and you can find them on www.amazon.com by searching on Jacqueline Lichtenberg) and I listen to this album while driving and gnawing on a plot problem.

This CD has inspiration woven into every track.

OK, I have Russian roots way back there, and maybe that's why the Russian Gypsy music resonates so with me. But that doesn't explain why I love every one of the songs recorded by Theo on all his albums. The connecting thread here is Theodore Bikel. Just grab anything by him you can find and you'll never regret it.

Search on Theodore Bikel using "all products" and you may have a surprise coming. He's the reader on a whole list of audiobooks. And they have VHS's of some of his movies.

His Yiddish Theater Songs album is also available from rhinohandmade.com and a group of his fans want the Rhino label to put out all the rest of Theo's albums. And be sure to visit bikel dot com!

            Live Long and Prosper,
            Jacqueline ...

5 out of 5 stars This is a real classic!.......2003-02-24

I own the LP of this recording, which I bought in the '50's or 60's. It is not only a faithful and pleasurable representation of a now lost Russian Gypsy music genre, but a historical masterpiece which should be reissued. Bikel's versatility and great talent is well displayed here.
