Music of Indonesia, Vol. 17: Kalimantan: Dayak Ritual and Festival Music

Dramatic works for vocal ensembles and gong orchestras are the focus of number 17 in Smithsonian Folkways' huge and comprehensive series on the music of Indonesia. This CD focuses on the music of the Dayek people, and to a lesser extent the Meleyu, both of Borneo. It features seven distinctly different types of music from this third largest of the world's islands. They range from works that will be familiar to those who know Indonesia via gamelan but also delve into more unexpected territory. Large vocal ensembles sing in unison, some all female, some mixed gender. There are a number of tracks that show the different types of metal gong ensembles. Most interesting of the set are pieces performed by a bamboo senggayung ensemble. Seven pairs of bamboo tubes are held by seven players, one in each hand, and struck against each other to create an interlocking melody. The sound is surprising, rich in rhythm and melody, extremely structured and precise. Technically excellent recordings are accompanied by detailed historical and musical notes by Philip Yampolsky. --Louis Gibson

Product Description
Our second album on Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) presents music from seven Dayak groups, three (out of four) provinces, and a variety of genres and ensembles. Many selections are devoted to the gong ensembles of Kalimantan, which are unlike either the large gamelon of Java and Bali or the interlocking gong ensembles of the southeastern region. Contrasting styles of choral singing are heard, as well as four rhythmically bewildering pieces for an ensemble of bamboo tubes struck together. The album closes with an unusual twenty-three minute overview of the music from a three-day curing ritual among the Ot Danum of the Melawi River region in West Kalimantan.
