Customer Reviews:
Misrepresentation of Jacob.......2006-02-11
There are about 5 CDs available which are re-issues of the great Brazilian Choro mandolinist Jacob do Bandolim. However this CD called Great Jewish Music: Jacob do Bandolim I feel is a total misrepresentation because there is only one track of him playing and the other tracks are by some rock and roll musicians that have nothing to do with anything, though they are claiming to be performing arrangements of his original pieces. If you are a fan of Jacob do Bandolim, do not buy this CD, because it will be a Great Disappointment instead.

ok, so Do Bandolim was a famous Brazillian composer of Choro. Zorn's label Tzadik has been putting out these tribute albums to great Jewish composers like Gainsbourg, Bacharach, and Marc Bolan... did you know they were Jewish? i didn't... does it matter? not really... they have all been eclectic and entertaining albums... now come the 2 new entries in the series: this one and another dude from Israel, Sascha Argon. these 2 records are not as adventurous as the first 3, but they are still solidly performed and are good starting points if you are not familiar with either Do Bandolim or Argon, (which i will be so presumptuous to guess, you are not), probably more so than the sometimes crazy and unconventional interpretations that the more 'rock ' oriented first three entries in the Great Jewish Music series were. I'm just listening to the Do Bandolim album for the first time and it's some pleasant listening.
