5 out of 5 stars From a music lover, not a critic.......2007-04-10

Many of these performances are new to me. That is the beauty of being 59 years old and still learning. My knowledge of classical music is based on what moves me. While others talk about all the other versions and other conductors, I just want to let other people know that these recordings give me great pleasure. While some may find Michel Beroff to be less than adequate, I enjoy his renditions of the piano concertos. I have heard other renditions and find that they all have their places. These concertos move me a great deal. That is my only criteria.

5 out of 5 stars Masur - Champion of Liszt.......2003-12-19

Before he became the embattled leader of the New York Philharmonic, Kurt Masur made a name for himself by making brilliant recordings with the Gewandhaus-Orchester Leipzig, these Liszt Orchestral Works foremost among them. It is delightful to have these recordings in print again, and for them all to be collected on seven discs in an inch-thick paper box set is even better. Masur's performances of the "Tone Poems" in particular rank among the best of all-time, along with Haitink and Golovanov in my opinion (see my review of the latter on his "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" title). Also included in this set are the works for Piano and Orchestra, and while Michel Beroff's renditions don't quite measure up to my favorite accounts by Arrau, Cliburn, Janis, Katchen, Richter or Zimerman, they are certainly first-rate. Oddly, my only complaint is that EMI seems to have taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" box are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting............2006-01-27

I got this as a Christmas present because I have been interested in Goebel's recordings for a while. Frankly, I had never even heard of these chamber pieces before. Yes, I was aware of other flute quartets, but not these. I searched and searched and could not find any other recordings of these, thus not being able to compare this with anything. All I can really say is that these are different than your "average baroque concerto." You don't often hear baroque chamber music played often, and on period intruments at that. Each part is very exposed, which alows the listener to really piece together the songs like a jigsaw puzzle andreally get into them and enjoy them that much more. I think the scoring is very well done on Teleman's part - I wouldn't expect anything like this out of Vivaldi or Handel, who though I admre, don't think they had the brains to come up with something like this.

One more thing which is just awesome, is the energy and intensity throughout this disc. The various players never lose focus, it seems. All of the tracks are exciting and I love them all.

This is a very different recording, but it definitely belongs in everyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have! Absolutely jaw-dropping.......2005-10-03

I quickly became a fan of Reinhard Goebel and his Musica Antique Koln emsemble when I purchased the Sinfonia Spirituosa String Concertos and have been itching to obtain another equally exciting, exhilerating and gorgeous piece of work ever since. This latest recording fits the bill perfectly. (Well, actually, it far surpasses the spirituosa string concerto disk -and that's no easy feat.) NOBODY plays Telemann like this group. I would rate this recording 10 stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling repertoire performed with dazzling virtuosity.......2005-07-04

Here is a case of expectations richly rewarded. Telemann's flute quartets are vibrant and tuneful, at times making great demands on the soloists. The Musica Antiqua Koln are in all ways up to the challenge, delivering a musical bouquet that is at various turns elegant, soothing, and exciting.

Baroque music -- "exciting"? Yes, quite! As an example, have a listen to the final movement of the A minor quartet (track 18). The runs and bouncing tunes jumping from oboe to recorder to violin should have you smiling by the halfway point. Which is not to say that this music is all about Allegro and Vivace -- there are Adagio and Largo movements as well, which the soloists similarly relish by settling comfortably into their serenity and repose. This is music that is surely as rewarding for the players as it is for the listener.

There is a variety of color in the selections and sequencing that keeps the ear from tiring, and recorded sound quality is first-rate. The sonority of the authentic instruments is not in any way distracting, in fact the tone and expression are easily on a level with any modern-instrument ensemble.

If you are a fan of effervescent baroque then you will certainly want this in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Reihard Goebel, the glory of Koln.......2005-07-03

If there is a group of specialists on early chamber music
that is then with no doubt Reinhard Goebel and his
Musica Antiqua Koln. Herr Goebel is an authority on
early chamber music performance, this is his 8th recording of music of Georg Philipp Telemann(1681-1767) Herr Goebel
has been devoting recordings of the works since 1979; thus making Telemann a favorite composer of this early music group.
Herr Goebel and his musicians are well at home with this repertoire. The works in this recording are of the Flotenquartette (Flute Quartets) by Telemann. The Flutes used here are two very popular during the baroque periods the "transverse" or "German" Flute and the "French Flute" or Recorder. This recording is truly a great recording, and the sound is so clear that it sounds like you're there with them in the recording studio...Great historic music at a very competitive price....Goebel, Telemann and Musica Antiqua, the million dollar team of early music......

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Feast fron Fabio.......2007-03-27

This is a reissue of 5 of the many recordings made by Fabio Biondi for Opus 111 in the 1990s, they are still in their original packaging in a cardboard slip cover but at a bargain basement price. As Europa Galante directed by Fabio Biondi are, in my opinion, the best interpreters of the Italian Baroque we can take it as read that the performances on all 5 discs are first rate, and the sound quality on all 5 discs is excellent, too. Writing a full review of all 5 discs is too large a task, as is reading 5 reviews in one go, so I will try to briefly inform the reader about the music on each of the CDs, roughly in the order of dates of composition.
The first CD is titled " Invenzioni Stravaganze", which really does not need translation, covers the period of Italian music in the early-mid 17th century, up to the time of Corelli. This is the period in which the violin, which started as a new instrument, became the most important. Compositions from eight composers are offered, the earliest work from 1613 and the latest 1674. While most of the names were vaguely familiar, I knew little about them or their works before I acquired these CDs. I particularly enjoyed the compositions of Uccelli, Mazzerferetta and Falconio, For these recordings Europa Galante uses 2 violins, viola, cello, theorbo and harpsichord; I also liked the way the theorbo was used as a constant but discrete companion of the harpsichord.
I enjoyed this CD, which I probably would not have bought if it had not been in this discount reissue, and warmly recommend it to anyone interested in the baroque who would like to hear what it sounded like before Corelli.

The second CD is devoted to the works of Francesco Geminiani, 1687-1762, a pupil and disciple of Corelli, who went to London in 1714 where he could make a comfortable living as a free lance composer and violinist. The program opens with the last concerto of his opus 1, which is a transcription of Corelli's opus 5 violin sonatas, the very well known variations on the old tune " La Follia", madness. The remainder of the program is the six concerti grossi of his opus 3, published in 1732. The concertino is 2 violins, viola and cello, accompanied by/opposed by 3 first and 3 second violins, viola, cello, bass, harpsichord and/or chamber organ. These are tuneful and cheerful, and beautifully played, in fact the six excellent concerti, particularly no 1, are to me, highlights of the baroque.

The third CD contains some of the works of Petro Antonio Locatelli, 1685-1768. In his early years he was chiefly known as a great violinist, in his later years, after he moved to Amsterdam, he concentrated on composition. The works on this CD are four of the twelve concerti grossi of his opus 1, published in 1721 but written some years earlier, a sinfonia 'for the funeral of his lady which took place in Rome', and a concerto from opus 7, 'Ariadne's Lament'. The forces used to play this music are the same as those for Geminiani above. I find the choice of the funeral and the lament rather puzzling; they are little known and seldom recorded. There is a lot of Locatelli from which to choose, and I would have preferred a concerto from his famous opus 3, 'L'Arte del Violino'.

Giuseppe Tartini, 1692-1770, is the composer on our next disc, he was known as a virtuoso performer, a great techer and as a prolific composer for the violin, with 135 violin concertos and about 200 violin sonatas to his name. Like Geminiani and Locatelli he was a great admirer of Corelli, although he quickly adopted the Vivaldi three movement model. In my opinion his early works sound more Vivaldian than Corellian, but as he matured he found a voice that was very much his own. On this CD we have 5 sonatas for violin and basso continuo, here cello, harpsicord and theorbo, two from opus 1, there is doubt as to when they were written, possibly 1728, one from opus 2, published in 1743, but probably written much earlier, and two named sonatas, probably later works. The late works, concertos and sonatas, belong in the very late Baroque; they could be referred as Classical. These sonatas are very well played by Fabio and friends.

The last of the 5 CDs takes us well into the Classical period with the cello quintets of Luigi Boccherini, 1743-1805. The cello quintet (2 violins, viola and 2 cellos) was Boccherini's creation, and he wrote 113 of them when employed in the court at Madrid, and beautiful music it is, stately, melodic and quietly joyful. Europa Galante, now a cello quintet, plays them very well too, but somehow not quite as well as more recent recordings, e.g. those of the Vanbrugh quartet with the extra cello played by Richard Lester. I noticed that Biondi was a very young man when this was recorded, 1992, busy establishing himself as a master of the Italian Baroque, and that his later recording of Boccherini cello quintets has been highly praised.

In summary this bargain re-release of Fabio Biondi's earlier recordings on Opus 111 is wonderful value for money and well worth 5 stars. It would be great to see more of these early CDs re-released, as they are now hard to come by

5 out of 5 stars great value on five of biondi's excellent recordings!.......2005-02-11

This box includes five individual discs. Four of the five discs are devoted to individual composers: Boccherini's quintets, Geminani's concerti grossi op.3, Locatelli's concerti grossi op.1, and Tartini's violin sonata's. The fifth disc is of mixed Italian composers. Excellent recordings and performances. The individual discs list for $17.95 each, so this box is an excellent value too!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pieces, beautifully done, more complete renditions.......2005-12-12

This album contains four very fine Telemann compositions which are beautifully performed. They are more complete than some other CDs. The title "Viola Concerto" is given here in 4 movements 13:49 minutes. In "The Sensuous Baroque" (B0000058FG) only the 1st two are provided for 6:29 minutes--though the 1st movement is longer than in the "Viola Concerto" CD. Similarly in "The Best of Telemann" CD, only the 1st two movements are provided totalling 6:36 minutes. Similarly, this CD contains Overture in C major with 10 movements, suite in G major with 8, and overture in D major with 7. Total time is a pretty generous 66:28. Overall the music is very enjoyable and versatile. The accompanying brochure includes a short biography of Telemann by Nicholas Anderson. He notes that the Viola Concerto was one of the 1st to feature the viola--which Telemann gives "true solo status." I found the CD mostly joyful & uplifting, making it one of my favorites. The pieces display great instrumentation & orchestration with a variety of instruments--flutes, recorders, oboes, strings, continuo, etc. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Telemann Collection.......2003-07-22

This collection of Telemann Concertos and Overtures is an excellent purchase for someone who loves baroque music and is interested in discovering this composer. Conductor Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields turn in first rate performances of these compositions. More serious collectors will be a bit annoyed at this title though. These four offerings are obviously from a variety of sessions, so why doesn't London/Decca reissue more of this material as "Double Decker" CDs instead of giving us bits and pieces on this "Jubilee" compilation. Reuniting the original sessions would be an altogether more welcome release than this title, which while well played, suffers from an overall lack of cohesion.

Isaac Stern is, arguably, the best interpreter of classical music there is. His fleshy vibrato and excellent phrasing incorporates his feeling into this set. The Brahms is superb as Stern expresses love, grief, confusion, depression, and eventually redemption throughout the CD. His duo with Eugen Istomin of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas are the best in my library. Same with the Schubert with Daniel Barenboim as his accompanist. Bartok could have been brushed up upon. The intonation was just a tad off. The Franck CD is superb. The Bartok is THE main source for this piece because of Stern's collaboration with the actual composer. All in all, this set ends Stern's legacy with his favorite encores; the best played upon them all.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful.......2006-06-13

Telemann's "Quixote" is as bright and delightful a suite as I've ever heard. I'm giddy and can not recommend this particular CD sufficiently.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Delightful Telemann.......2003-09-10

Telemann, four years Bach's elder and outliving him by almost twenty years, enjoyed a renown during his lifetime that Bach never did. He was a church musician--he wrote far more cantatas than Bach--but he was also a man of the theater and an astute businessman in Hamburg where he lived most of his adult life. And on this disc we have some of his most delightful secular music.

The 'Don Quixote' suite celebrates Cervantes' novel in which 'life is a dream, and even dreams are dreams.' We have sections from the book illustrated with pointed tone-painting, e.g. Quixote's sighs after the 'lovely Dulcinea' or the somewhat lame trotting of Quixote's broken-down 'steed,' Rosinante. This is a late piece and shows a good deal of French influence, as do the two other suites included here, each opening with a French 'ouverture' with typical dotted rhythms.

The other two suites are the 'Ouverture in d minor' consisting of mostly French dances (but including a not-very-English-sounding hornpipe) and the E Flat Suite, subtitled 'La Lyra.' The word 'lyra' refers to the third movement which imitates, by means of droning fifths, the hurdy-gurdy, once known as the 'lyra mendicorum' ('beggar's lyre').

I tend to prefer baroque orchestral music played on modern instruments but with some modicum of baroque performance practice. The playing by the conductorless modern-instrument group, the Northern Chamber Orchestra, is exemplary. These Manchester musicians play with impeccable ensemble, an apt lightness of tone and striking rhythmic alertness. The recorded sound is remarkably lifelike. All in all, this is a wonderful issue. There's lots more secular Telemann to be recorded--he was an indefatigable worker--and one can hope that this group records more of it.

      Recommended.

The noted music critic, conductor, and author Donald Francis Tovey described Liszt's Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne (What You Hear on the Mountaintop) as a series of "introductions to introductions," and truth to tell, it does go on. But then again, all of Liszt's symphonic poems are experiments of one sort or another. He invented the form, and although he may not have gotten every one of them absolutely right (meaning there are dull spots here and there), there are more than enough interesting moments to keep your ears occupied. Just make sure that you take them one at a time, and don't use them as background music. What Liszt does with the tunes is more important than the tunes themselves, so you must pay close attention. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A great deal on some good music!.......2007-05-18

This is a very nice Liszt set, with performances by the reliably fine London Symphony Orchestra. I ordered the disc set from Chimera Books and Music on 5/7/07 and received it 5/10/07. Fast, accurate service, a good product and a remarkably low price ... what more could one ask?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but pales in comparison with Mazur.......2004-09-07

I enjoyed these poems but the "authenticity" was lacking in my opinion. Liszt is one of those composers beloved by the public but scorned bt the "experts" - another case of being so smart you don't know anything. The Symphonic Poems are one of those ultra-Romantic creations that seemed to spring fully-grown from the pen. Each one is related to a story or mood, although with the level of knowledge from today's education few would recognize let alone understand the connection.

How many people could even tell you who Prometheus or Goethe or Schiller was much less how the piece related to them? Les Prelude was good (not great) as was Orpheus. Mazeppa, the most dramatic of the set, came off sultry rather than scintillating.

Then again, I am comparing everything to the incredible recording by Kurt Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Those two sets are the apex of Liszt recordings (MHS only).

      4 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2002-03-04

While the recordings on this CD are nothing to complain about, the quality on several of the songs is slightly staticky, and sounds mildly muffled (not as much ambience and echoing as needed to make these songs have full effect, especially on Mazeppa). Unless you really want the Symphonic Poem No. 1, you'd do better to stick with other recordings. The first of the poems is very hard to find and this is the reason I bought this CD. Unfortunately, it falls under the staticky song category.

5 out of 5 stars See for yourself.......2000-01-06

Liszt is one of the most underestimated composers of all time, but I'm sure that anyone who listens carefully to recordings like this can change his mind. The only problem I see in understanding this pieces is that their richness (in all senses) make it necessary to listen to them again in order to understand them more deeply. Yet I can say that the exact same thing is true with Beethoven, Bach, Mahler, and all the other hyper-estimated composers. Looking closer, the problem must be that this pieces are almost never played, so it's difficult to know them before you buy a record like this. I say, don't let yourself go with the general prejudice against the Lisztian inovations : the two recordings by Haitink and the other two by Kurt Masur with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester are a necessity to every curious listener. Each poem is a masterpiece, and you'll hear the orchestra sound like you have never imagined.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2005-03-31

The Bach concerto for two violins in D minor may be one of the finest recordings of this piece ever made. The Vivaldi concerto for two violins in D minor is a wonderful compliment to it, and equally adept. Both are published here for the first time.

According to Leon Pommers, Morini (nee Morgenstern) regarded her Stradivarius "as a human being able to adapt itself to whomever played it." The violin, stolen shortly before her death and lost to this day, comes alive here for all those wise enough to want to hear it.

Morini's sound is sweet, passionate, and beyond compare.
