The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise SheppardCustomer Reviews:

"She's Like So Whatever".......2007-07-15
I listened to a few tracks of this, and had fun watching the video for Girlfriend.
Wasn't Avril Lavigne supposedly "anti-Britney", and supposedly "like Sid Vicious for the new generation" - when apparently, she didn't even know at that time who Sid Vicious was? That quote (in a 2002 Seventeen interview) links her to Punk.
She is an utter disgrace to Punk. She denies having ever said she was punk, but originally, she did say she was a skater-punk. Punk isn't about being a stuck-up motherf*cking princess (in her own words, no?). Punk also isn't about backtracking what you say about yourself/your music. But okay, maybe it's better to focus "on the music" instead, and not whether it's punk, or pop, or rock, or etc.
Music is supposed to come from the heart.
I suspect Avril Lavigne would be a lot less popular, if she didn't have her make-up, straight-ironed hair, and now preppy-wh*rish clothes (I wonder what her next makeover will consist of) - in glossy magazines, airbrushed album covers, and music videos where she indulges in being a "bad girl" (causing "trouble" in malls), and now seemingly, a bimbo (tell me how the hiphop, or whatever, dance scene at the end of Girlfriend, isn't "bimbotic", and how that doesn't make her like any other Britney/PCD/Beyonce out there).
However, if you do like Britneys and Rihannas, then go ahead and support the modern "music" industry!
PS: I'd give this album MINUS 10 stars, if I could.

A dreadful piece of "bubblegum pop" crap........2007-08-03
This crap is worse than even her first album. I thought Avril's second was a very nice improvement and it showed that she had some talent. But THIS is just plain horrible. "Girlfriend"? Please. It's completely unappealing and I believe that the only reason anyone over the age of 11 would like it is because it's got a "beat" to it.
That beat from "Girlfriend" is pretty much the same exact thing, more or less, in every other damn song on the record.
I would not recommend this CD to anyone except young girls... like, in the "tween" age.

It grows on you.......2007-07-03
Originally I purchaed the censored version of this album, but realized I could not stand the censoring that was going on. The blanks in the singing just threw me off. Within two weeks of listening to the censored version, I ordered the uncensored one, and haven't gone back since.
All out fun power pop........2007-07-01
There are 4 or 5 tracks that could easily be singles on the CD and they probably will become just that. Her label will likely milk this for a few years.
Compared to her last two it's somewhat a mix of the styles. The more pop-oriented of her first and the harder-edged sounds of her second CD (which I didn't care much for).
It's kind of a nice mix. You don't get too much of either. :)
On the other hand, I much preferred her first CD so to me this is much like a return to that sound.
A few of the tracks are more "punk" than I like, but those same tracks will likely appeal to many of her fans.
If you like Avril, then you must buy this CD (however, you probably already have).

Self-professed skate punk Avril Lavigne sings that she'd "rather be anything but ordinary" on her debut. While the fact that she had a record deal by the age of 16 separates her from the pack, too often Let Go's lyrical shortcomings drag the teenager's musically impressive recording entrée into the realm of the typical. The catchy choruses of Go are substantial, though, thanks to Lavigne's riff-driven melodies and powerful vocals, which at times adopt the unorthodox intonation quirks of fellow Canadian Alanis Morrissette. The nuanced, dynamic "Losing Grip," "My World" (which perfectly captures the ennui of suburbia), and the buoyant power-pop blast "Sk8er Boi" are the collection's highlights. But Lavigne's honest yet awkward words weigh down the likes of "Mobile," "I'm with You," and "Naked." "Nobody's Fool," which displays her Pink-like take-me-as-I-am credo, hints that someday Lavigne's lyrics will match the strength of her music. --Annie ZaleskiCustomer Reviews:

With her breakthrough 2002 debut, Let Go, Avril Lavigne tried to market herself as the bona fide alternative to tarty teen queens, Britney and Christina. Her guitar-pop hits were irresistibly bratty but the whole "Complicated" teen pose was a little hard to swallow, especially since two songwriters called the Matrix--who had at least twenty years on the Canadian singer--fed her most of the material. Having had the chance to live a little, Lavigne returns to make good on her angsty image with Under My Skin, an album rippling with delightfully dour melodies and heartfelt lyrics about loneliness ("How Does It Feel") and fractured relationships ("Don't Tell Me"). Is it clichéd? Sure. Will it scare off her necktie and t-shirt wearing fans? Possibly. But there's nothing quite as satisfying as watching a teen-pop icon actually reveal her soul. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:
I really like this one.......2007-05-28
Fall to Pieces is a favorite of mine on this CD, and upbeat song. It also includes " My happy ending" with a different beginning- a different sound. I am not sure the album shows much growth from her last album but it was good too, and Avril is in pretty uncharted waters here anyways....as most of her counterparts are less rock, and more bubble gum. It's a CD you can listen to more than once over and find a new one you like. There are a few songs on here that are a little weak....but otherwise it's a good cd.

Avril Rocks It.......2007-03-10
The cd sounds wayy darker that the poppy lyrics and sounds of the first "Let Go."It has the radio explosion song "My Happy Ending."The song that all girls will love,"Don't Tell Me" is also included in this great cd.
Though many say she is goth at this point of her career, think.Loooking goth and being goth are NOT the same. Her lyrics and pure voice is what reallly counts. Not all these tags such as 'punk, goth, prep, and some more.'
The cd is great and filled with wayy more great songs then I have mentioned.Besides, the music rocks, the lyrics do,and her voice does too!
A popular chick singer who is actually a musician!.......2007-02-26
I have always thought it was ridiculus and quite stupid that artists like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson ever even became huge, pop- culture icon artists. Why do we fall in love with "artists" who aren't even musicians, or in Britney's case, can't even sing? (at least without a synthesizer) The pop-icon thing even sucks in good artists like Lindsay Lohan, who is quite a rockin' guitarist, and turns them into mediocre pop singers, making artists with a promising future like Lindsay into just one of the other zillion pop singers and groups.
It is also nice to see an artist like Avril who doesn't feel the need to make racy videos to sell her work. She simply lets the album speak for itself, which is good because "Under My Skin" is a truly great album.
Keep on rockin', Avril!
ps: By the way, if you like female singers who can play a mean guitar, check out Krystal Meyers. I know she's technically "christian" rock, but her stuff is easily as good as anything else out there, including Avril. Her song "Together" has been featured on the awesome NBC TV show "Heroes" and featured on the NBC website.
More "mature" then the "Let Go" CD.......2007-02-20

Returning to the Recital Hall: A Soiree.......2005-04-09
Here the program is devoted to the works of Claude Debussy, a composer for whom Upshaw has a particular penchant. Her voice is crystal clear, perfectly focused and yet not afraid to animate when the lyrics demand. She covers three cycles here: 'Ariettes oubliees' (for this listener the most successful on the album), 'Racueil Vasnier', and 'Cinq Poemes de Charles Baudelaire' (contrast these with the recently released Susan Graham version and see what interpretation is all about!).
The collaboration between Upshaw and James Levine is sensitive (if not always the pianism of others..). But the entire recital is uplifting and satisfying for the variation in the songs, recorded sound, the generosity of the disc, and most of all for the musical intelligence in which these songs are performed! Grady Harp, April 05
Pretty sound spoiled by a bad vocal habit.......2004-05-07
P.S. Since writing this review (quite some time ago), I was fortunate to hear a recording of Ms. Upshaw in a production at the Metropolitan Opera where she didn't do any of her annoying sliding at all - not once - (probably because it was music from a much earlier time) The difference was astounding. It was a glorious performance. It was hard to believe it was the same person. This, more than ever, confirms my opinion that she ruined this recording with a bad singing habit.
Excellent!.......2003-11-26

Love this album n the bonuses.......2005-10-10
I was thrilled to see her music videos on the 2nd Cd. They were done really well n the whole reason I bought this dualdisc. I haven't really gotten to take a look at all the extras but when I do, I'll be back to give an update!
Conclusion: Both CD's: addicting
Britney backlash as a result of this album's popularity: priceless!

Finally, a taste of something worth listening to!!!.......2005-06-14
Avril Lavigne expresses herself really well in this album. None of the songs sound the same, and her voice is so totally COOl! You wont regret getting this album coz it rocks and you should also get 'Let Go', her other album coz that also ROCKS! This is one singer im not dissapointed in..never will be. Its also really impressive that she writes all her songs on 'Let Go' and writes all her songs in 'Under My Skin' too. She's really creative and she's the BEST female singer ever!!!!
My favorites are: Who Knows, Nobody's Home, Take Me Away, Together, My Happy Ending, DOnt Tell Me, He Wasn't... in other words ALL OF THEM!!!!
Dual Disc Disaster?.......2005-06-11
Anyway, the Dual Disc was a pricey investment. The original copy of the album came out in June of 2004. I had already purchased it the day it arrived in stores. Of course, now in 2005, the Dual Disc formatted version comes out and I'm left to pay for a second copy of the exact same album. This was only because I was interested in the music videos and behind-the-scenes footage. As for the "high quality" sound, you can't tell the difference. I suppose you would be able to if it was say, an acoustic or opera performance. I thought that the original version was already produced in enhanced stereo anyway... I only wish that Dual Disc had been available last year. Nevertheless, it IS nice to have a back-up copy of the original. I also noticed some differences between the two versions. On the original, the album cover art is a clear, black/gray/white and a clear image. On the Dual Disc version, the album cover art is a more sepia/old-photograph style with a soft, blurred image. I'm not sure if this is coincidental, but maybe it will lead to something in the future.
All in all, the bonus videos and behind-the-scenes footage is a nice addition to an Avril fan's collection. It is well worth the extra $14.00 if you already have the original copy.
Always keep rockin' on...
Don't buy this CD!.......2005-05-08
