5 out of 5 stars A rarity..........2004-05-08

This one is a rarity in today's music world... a blues album that is diverse, creative, completely true to the music & is loaded with smokin' guitar work that somehow escapes the cliches. If you want the next Stevie Ray you are in the wrong place, but this one has feel to spare, even when reworking classic blues tunes. I sure dig it...

4 out of 5 stars A New Voice for Old Music.......2004-04-07

I hadn't listened to James Blood Ulmer's music in a while, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I was used to his freer, jazzier recordings such as Tales of Captain Black and No Wave. I was very pleasantly surprised by No Escape. This is Chicago blues at its finest, without the requisite B.B. King-style solos. Instead, Ulmer and his band bring their own voices to the music, without fundamentally changing the structure of the blues style. It shows that a creative artist can continue to be creative even with an old format.

5 out of 5 stars Cosmic Roadhouse Blues.......2003-11-17

This is far and away James Blood Ulmer's best blues record to date, and it only further solidifies his 21st century re-invention as one of the blues most authentic voices. He's joined by a stellar cast of New York City players, including Vernon Reid, Charlie Burnham, David Barnes and Olu Dara. The first thing that comes to my mind is that this is what the band would sound like at a cosmic roadhouse (and you know there is such a thing). Saddled-up and belly to the bar on a Friday night would be Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Jerry Garcia, Sun Ra, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Robert Johnson, Ernest Hemmingway, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Rosetta Tharpe...and they'd all be hollerin', shouting out amens, tipping big and diggin' Ulmer's blues. Check out Jimmy Reed's "Goin' To New York," interpreted in 2003 jug band style or how about "Bright Lights, Big City," as a 'round midnight blues complete with a tap dancer and Olu Dara blowing that slow drawl Mississippi trumpet. You can envision the smoke hanging heavy in the air. Ulmer's own tunes "Are You Glad To Be In America" and "Satisfy" are brilliant, performed completely solo. Put these next to any other classic acoustic blues and tell me his approach isn't as authentic in its singular identity. What I'm trying to say is that he doesn't sound like Leadbelly, Son House or Lightnin' Hopkins, but he sounds like James Blood Ulmer. His sound is as pure and completely unique as any of the masters. It wasn't influenced by any of the aformentioned because Blood is one of those aformentioned. From the same land, the same headspace, the same values, the same struggle, but on his own individual journey and path. Other tunes like "Come On," "You Know, I Know" and "The Hustle Is On," swing in a loose, heady rockin' style that will get the room jumping. The two highlights that make this disc an absolutely essential recording for 2003 are "Ghetto Child" and "Trouble In Mind." Any description would fall short from doing them justice. All I'll say is buy the disc and dig for yourself. That there is the real deal. As deep, as soulful and as blue as the blues get! No Escape From the Blues for sure...

Vernon Reid's bid to turn Ulmer into the ranking 21st-century bluesman phase two... New York. .. Reid's banjo cakewalking away with "Goin' to New York".... the tap solo and Olu Dara cameo that break up the famed "Bright Lights, Big City," ...Jimmy Reed songs. Ulmer solos.

Album Description

The Commercial Appeal - March 29, 2003 FOUR STARS Not too many people can produce a record a decade and get away with it. Memphis singer-songwriter and folk-blues authority Sid Selvidge can. While his is not a prolific catalog, each of Selvidge's five studio albums has been worth the wait, especially his latest, "A Little Bit of Rain." His last record, 1993's "Twice Told Tales," was part of the Nonesuch American Explorer Series (which also put out an eponymous 1991 album by Charlie Feathers). Whereas on the last one you got such Selvidge signature covers as Pearlee and Keep It Clean (not to mention his wonderful rendition of Tell Me Why You Like Roosevelt), this go-round features such cool interpolations as the soulful Bluff City stamp given to Big Bill Broonzy's Long Tall Mama and the Jimmie Rodgers chestnut Hobo Bill, which finds Selvidge in fine yodeling form. Only Selvidge's Mud Boy & the Neutrons compeer Jim Dick inson could have produced this one, and the musical kinship is so apparent and strikingly simpatico, this album no doubt will be viewed as Selvidge's best to date. Arrangements are their own thing of beauty as well. An extended family of session players includes Selvidge's guitar monster of a son Steve Selvidge, that other guitar monster Luther Dickinson, Paul Taylor on drums, bassist Sam Shoup, Jim Spake and Scott Thompson on horns, Neutrons member Jimmy Crosthwait rubbing the washboard, singers Brenda Patterson, Susan Marshall and Reba Russell, and Jim Dickinson holding down an arsenal of keyboards. Songs come alive as a result, notably Eddie Hinton's Every Natural Thing and the twin balladic highlights, Do I Ever Cross Your Mind? and John Hiatt's The River. Selvidge goes it alone on several tunes, including the stark Bascom Lunsford number Swannanoa Tunnel (also done in recent years by Martin Simpson) and a sweetly dark take on Long Black Veil. Selvidge has never sung better. His vulnerable tenor voice - which breaks into falsetto at the most pained, exposed moments - sings with an unadorned dignity throughout. And he rolls the credits, as the liner notes suggest, with an original waltz, Arkansas Girl, a 9/11-inspired song that finds hope where it begins - at home.

- Bill Ellis

5 out of 5 stars Do I Ever Cross Your Mind - Fantastic!.......2007-01-16

You have to have a heart of stone to not get misty listening to Do I Ever Cross Your Mind and not think of a lost love. Only Ray Charles' version comes close.

5 out of 5 stars musical art of the highest order.......2003-06-11

What a gorgeous record. I first heard of Sid Selvidge some years ago, in passing but always flattering mentions in a book by the late Robert Palmer. Until a few days ago, however, I'd never actually heard him. Selvidge, I learn, is one of those hidden treasures, a guy whose gift is sure and true but too smart to force its attention on you. When you hear him, you need to -- and you will want to -- sit down and afford him the courtesy of deep listening.

A creature of the folk and blues revival, he also has an ear for rootsy r&b and a feeling for the subtleties of older, purer country. Whatever he's doing, it is distinctly his own, melded into a seamless musical vision. He goes inside a song and burrows to its core. It can't be easy, but Selvidge is too good to make it sound like work.

His version of "Hobo Bill" carries only occasional, incidental references to the immortal Jimmie Rodgers original. Bascom Lamar Lunsford's recording of the traditional "Swannanoa Tunnel" is a classic, but Selvidge's reimagining is sheer cold, lonesome wind. Only Fred Neil could have topped this, though the CD's title tune, a Neil composition (from his first solo album, the influential 1965 Elektra release), amply demonstrates that Selvidge can hold his own against the folk masters. He manages to transform the grossly over-covered "Long Black Veil" into something you can listen to with pleasure. The r&b ballad "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?" will make you cry. The great James Luther Dickinson produces. I need say no more, except that if you're looking for musical art of the highest order, you'll want this record to be a part of your life.

IT'S AMAZING THAT THIS CD WASN'T ORIGINALLY ISSUED IN THE '70'S. GREAT FUNKY NOTES FROM THE B-3. AFTER BUYING THIS CD, I HAD TO GET EVERYTHING I COULD FROM BIG JOHN. HE'S BAAD-CHECK HIM OUT! THE TUNE "DRAGON SLAYER" WITH THE BRUBECK "TAKE 5" TIMING; THAT'S MY FAVORITE CUT, ALONG WITH "CISSY STRUT". BLUE NOTE NEEDS TO EMPTY THE VAULT OUT ON THIS GREAT ARTIST! GET THIS CD NOW WHILE YOU CAN; IT'S BECOMING INCREASINGLY HARD TO FIND!

Grab this one quick... first, if I'm not mistaken, it never was. A bunch of tracks put together from the vaults (much like my other fave of his and Grant Green's - - Blues for Lou). It seems to come and go out of print... though if I'm not mistaken, this is one of the first domestic reissues in years.

The sound is both funky and off center. Don't expect in your face Reuben Wilson style fatback... and don't expect pure Larry Young... expect an evil Frankenstein-ian mix of both of 'em as only Big John could do it. Expect to hear a mix of always slightly off center and mysterious B.J. Patton grooves meets progressive Jazz (circa 1969). The groove is always there, cool, bluesy and relaxed like Big John likes it... and he never gets excited and forgets it, no matter how far on the edge he gets... One note, and he'll take you to China, another, and its down home in Birmingham Alabama - - From the Mandingo to Sissy Strut... its time to rade the vaults again... and this sure 'nuff is a real good'un ! ! !

    Personell are :

    George Coleman - Sax (Tenor)
    James Blood Ulmer - Guitar
    LeRoy Williams - Drums
Marvin Cabell - Flute, Sax (Alto), Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor)

This is one of the best recordings I've ever listened to. The songs were original and seemed genuine (most musicals out there seem really forced to me, like they don't have any direction or can't engage the listener), the lyrics made me laugh (I really like They Love Loretta), and whoever composed this clearly has a lot of talent. I totally recommend this to anyone who does not usually listen to this type of music, and also of course to those who do enjoy musicals, as this is one of the best out there.
