5 out of 5 stars Valuable compendium.......2007-01-24

This set is extremely valuable, not only as an overview of Dame Joans career but because it contains three complete LP sets that have been very hard to find. The sets are the 2 LP French opera (operetta) set, the Mozart album and the Wagner album. Although some of these do not show her to her best advantage (the Wagner set) they all have some very beautiful things and the French items are superb. The annotations and photos are interesting as well and there are some piano songs with Bonynge that are released here for the first time along with a scene from a live Covent Garden Norma.

5 out of 5 stars Rareties available on CD at last!.......2006-03-29

While Joan Sutherland has recorded a number of impressive aria collections throughout the many years of her recording career, they tend to get lost in the shuffle of the countless reissues Decca/London has endlessly repackaged. While some of the original collections have appeared intact on CD--"The Art of the Prima Donna," "The Age of Bel Canto," "Love Live Forever" (her operetta collection that was originally titled "The Golden Age of Operetta"), to name a few--others are currently represented in the CD catalogue by only a few selections on discs that also include excerpts from complete opera recordings or duplicates of selections from other original collections. As a result, it has been impossible to assemble a CD collection of her recordings without a LOT of duplication, and some of the most interesting collections are still unavailable (e.g. "Command Performance" and "Serate Musicale").

While this newest set does include a lot of bits of this and that, ranging from her very first LPs to excerpts from complete recordings most Sutherland fans already have and a few "live" performances, what is perhaps most significant about it is that it features the complete contents of the "Sutherland Sings Wagner" LP--a real repertoire departure for her--and the double-LP album called "French Opera Gala" (in the U.S.--the British title was "Romantic French Arias"), neither of which, to the best of my knowledge, has been available on CD before. "Opera News" magazine once ran an article in which they asked various stars to name the one album that they felt best represented their artistry for future generations, and Dame Joan selected the "French Opera Gala," so for Sutherland fans, this is a long-awaited treat.

I'm not going to waste space saying how miraculous I consider Dame Joan's artistry. If you are familiar with her work already, you know whether you adore her or not; and if you aren't, this massive set is probably not the best place to start (that would be "The Art of the Prima Donna" album that introduced her to most listeners decades ago)--especially since this newest set doesn't contain the lyrics, a must for newcomers. Let's hope Decca/London gets around to releasing the rest of her recordings intact instead of endlessly scrambling and repackaging the same selections over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2006-01-31

I first heard of Dame Sutherland while on the internet while listening to a internet radio station. I was instantly a fan, her control, technique, and tone is perfectly executed and rivals the equally fantastic Maria Callas. She has a powerful voice and presence that will evoke every emotion from her listeners. Highly recommended to all Opera Diva fans.

5 out of 5 stars WHO ELSE CAN SING LIKE THIS TODAY?.......2005-04-10

This is Decca's second multi disc evaluation of this fantastic singer's long career and many recordings. True that a lot on the first set is duplicated here, but there are a few exceptions here and there that make it a worthy addition. Of particular interest are the very early items of Handel and Italian baroque arias, some forgotten song recordings and a live performance of the duet from Norma. It can't be said too many times - who can sing like this today? For sheer vocalism it's hard to find anyone on the same wavelength. This set will give very young opera goers an idea of what they missed.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07

This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2001-07-10

It is only halfway through the year as yet...but unless Carol Thompson, or Dougie MacLean release a new album this year (and it would have to be a darn good one at that), and unless Rich Mullins comes back from the grave to bequeath more music upon us...then I have to say that without a doubt "Les Chants d' Eros" will be the best new CD I listen to this year.

First of all...Custer LaRue is still my favorite female singer. However, she must now share the title with Claire Gignac. "A vortex of musical passion" (from the excellent liner notes) indeed! If I handed out a vocal artist of the year award, I would have to give it to Mrs. Gignac for this album. Her singing is beautiful on this disc...it is hard to imagine one artist being capable of the emotional range necessary for songs like: "Est-ce ma faute a moi?"; "L'oie blessee"; and "La complainte de la Seine"--much less the other thirteen songs here.

Speaking of songs...let me just take a minute to say that one of the biggest attractions that this recording holds is the variety of texts that are interpreted. Pieces written by Chretien de Troyes, Christine de Pisan and Victor Hugo stand side by side with pieces by Kurt Weill and Charles Baudelaire.

All the songs are given fresh and startling interpretations by the Singer and the musicians on this disc. Instead of the usual, rather samey sounding piano in the background of most "songs" discs, Gignac is backed by ingenious string settings. Guitars, mandolins, violins, and even a psaltery are used. One piece is actually spoken word over instrumentation...this, like every other aspect of "Les Chants d' Eros" blows me away.

I give "Les Chants d' Eros" my highest recommendation. Even if this type of music is not usually your cup of tea, I strongly urge you to get a copy. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Chant-tootsie!.......2000-04-18

I think I've always liked the idea of Piaf better than the actuality. Here I risk Francophile wrath, but she seemed a little too mannered in her anguish and diffidence. Claire Gignac is a different story. Out Piaf-ing Piaf in "Hymne a l'amour," she mixes smoldering intensity with an entirely believable passion as she surveys a range of love songs that spans many centuries. From a spare setting (her own) of lyrics by Arthurian balladeer Chretien de Troyes to a modern, Leo Ferre take on a Beaudelaire lyric, it's a brilliantly chosen program that's rendered amidst a jazz/cabaret combo with shades of the old Reinhardt-Grappelli collaborations. These performances don't just draw you in -- they engulf you, going straight to the heart. Gignac's voice is husky and very expressive, with a kind of "oh, honey, you don't want to know" quality to the storytelling that lurks behind these songs. Open yourself up to this recording and it'll pack a "Winterreise"-like punch.

In his lifetime (1872-1921), Déodat de Séverac was considered an artistic equal to Debussy and Ravel. Based on the meager recorded evidence offered in recent years (a set of piano music on EMI and a briefly available edition of songs on Ariane), this makes perfect sense. His music is highly descriptive, often impressionistic but often without the self-consciously studied languidness that can make music of this period seem dated. Not everything is great: Séverac definitely had good and bad days. But there's an excitement and immediacy to his nature painting, though these songs have no lack of introspection and depth of thought. Francois La Roux is one of the best French recitalists around and Johnson should have government decorations for his service to the song literature, French and otherwise. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars Still the best collection of Berlioz's lovely songs.......2006-01-31

Berlioz didn't challenge his artistry in these 29 songs, which are mostly simple but very appealing melodies with basic piano accompaniments (Berlioz couldn't play the piano and didn't write difficult music for it). Taken a handful at a time, this 2-hour collection from DG, which was acclaimed when it first appeared in 1994, provides much sweet listening.

The four soloists are variable: von Otter is magnificent (her contribution was recorded separately in Stockholm, the other singers in three spearate locations!), and Thomas Allen rises to a high level of artistry even in the simplest songs. Tenor John Aler is uncomfortable in French, I would guess, and tends to mumble. Soprano Frnacoise Pollet, being a native speaker, has perfect diction but a wobbly voice that tends to spread out in loud passages. The biggest letdown is the piano accompanist, Cord Garben, who is routine and unimaginative. His lack of spark affects every song, unfortunately, although the overall level of performance is always good enough to provide enjoyment of these rarely recorded songs.

For someone who doesn't want to explore this deeply into Berlioz's vocal writing, von Otter's five solo songs have been excerpted on a marvelous recital album that features an incomparable Les Nuits d'Ete. In all, I found this 2-CD set highly enjoyable, although there are no hidden masterpieces to be uncovered.

Joan Sutherland is spectacular in these operatic selections, almost all of which were recorded during her prime--between 1962 and 1971--when her voice was at its freshest, and mannerisms such as sloppy diction and droopy phrasing were at a minimum. The characters here depicted are tragically loony, permitting the composers to lavish upon them coloratura fantasies that make for exciting listening, but restrict the roles to the few singers who are capable of managing the swirls and trills of the high tessitura. Sutherland reveled in these parts; the more difficult, the better. It's impossible to select highlights in a disc that's brimming with them, but her signature role, Lucia di Lammermoor, with its flowing vocal line and ravishing soprano-flute duet, offers some of the most exciting singing you'll ever hear; the top notes never strained, always full and rounded. But, then, everything else on this indispensable disc is a delight. --Dan Davis

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Stupenda indeed!.......2006-12-30

Sutherland knocks the socks off the listener in each of these selections. This is a fantastic introduction if you really want to know why Sutherland was the reigning queen of colouratura in her day.
Superb sound and recordings range from early 70's to early 80's.

4 out of 5 stars And interesting album.......2004-05-07

This is an interesting album. The Puritani is from 1973, Hamlet from 1983 (wow!), and the Lucia from 1971. This is like a showcase of the later Sutherland voice. It's different from the younger voice. It's a darker, wiser tone. For starters, let's take the Hamlet scene. Not quite as many fireworks as the 1960 one, but the vibrato isn't so fluttery and kinda out of control. It's a slower, more steady and studied tone. She wisely omits some of the high notes (I mean, she's 57 for heaven's sake!). I consider a lesson in how to sing healthily and proper in the later vocal years. It's really a lesson to all singers to just hear her. The Puritani is magical. Just beautiful eerily cool music. The ornaments in the second aria are really quite amazing. And the high Eb at the end of Vien, diletto is amazing. Just that trademark Eb like she does in Traviata. Perfection. This Lucia is actually my favorite compared to her 1959 and 1961 ones. Now, don't get me wrong, each of those is wonderful in their own fabulous ways. The 1959 is fresh and bright and exciting. The 1961 is a clear understandable and beautiful tone with all the great ornaments she was working on as she was developing the role. I find this one super cool because it's just cool to hear how this voice can still have handle the demanding Lucia lines. Cause you see, her voice was getting heavier with age and it's just kinda amazing to hear "Wow! She's still got the chops!"

5 out of 5 stars A great follow up to..........2004-01-13

Callas' Mad Scenes Album, I love this CD. Joan sings the hell out of each piece even though the interpretations and characters suffer from it, I barely hear any madness... Anyway, I want to comment on several things written here:

1)What one music class (Which school is that) says doesn't mean a thing, I trust my own ears and known experts like Steane, Kesting and Porter.

        2)The Sills-Fan isn't worth a thought, I too think he's an immature brat.

5 out of 5 stars Sutherland rules, who's this Beverly Sills.......2003-07-14

Sorry for not being current, or I'm too young. But who is Beverly Sills? I thought with Sutherland retired, the reigning soprano is Renee Fleming.
Whoever she is. Her fans are getting annoying. I'll be sure that I don't take any of their recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars Sutherland "Voice of the Century".......2003-07-13

In a music 111 class, I compared divas Sutherland, Sills, and Callas all singing the mad scene from Lucia. I didn't say who was who.
It was my final project. And I handed a survey to see who is the better bel canto singer.
        Sutherland--1971 recording
        Sills-------1969 recroding
        Callas------1955 recording
        Here is the results.
        1)Sutherland....40 votes
        2)Sills.........07 votes
        3)Callas........00 votes
I got an A on the project. And the students were astonished by Sutherland's mad scene by a huge margin, as you can see. NO one voted for Callas.
Without question, Sutherland is the best coloratura, at least with the Lucia mad scene. But this set has all mad scenes. Some even more difficult than the Lucia. I invite you to hear this, and make up your mind
Dont let some immature kid who just know how to call people names and bash Sutherland influence you. Listen to Sutherland. You will be a believer.

There is only one word for this four-CD set: glorious. Released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Verdi's death, it presents arias from every one of his 28 operas, a comprehensive overview of his work. It is also a tribute to Placido Domingo, one of his foremost present-day interpreters. An extraordinarily versatile artist, Domingo is heard in selections from his signature roles, like Otello, Radames, and Don Carlo, taken from recordings made between the 1960s and the '90s. He's also heard in new recordings of arias from the earliest, unfamiliar operas he has not performed on stage, and alternate arias Verdi wrote for different versions of his operas. Thus, he sings I Lombardi in Italian, Jérusalem in French, and Don Carlo and I Vespri Siciliani in Italian and French.

There are also extended scenes with illustrious colleagues, including Leontyne Price, Katia Ricciarelli, Nicolai Ghiaurov, and Sergei Leiferkus, whose Iago is an exquisitely insidious villain. He is accompanied by the greatest orchestras and conductors. For the new recordings, his partners are Myung-Whun Chung and Valery Gergiev, whose Mariinsky Theater musicians contribute some beautiful string solos. The matchless beauty of Domingo's voice seems untouched by the years, and he can change and vary it to suit the musical and dramatic requirements. His top notes never lose their clarion ring, yet the final B-flat of "Celeste Aida" tapers off, as Verdi demands. Even more remarkable, he can create real characters. Even without the texts, the mood, emotion, and meaning always come through. In this incomparable treasure trove, all opera lovers will find their own favorites, and many new gems besides, all performed to utter perfection. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Verdi singing to set the standard for all tenors.......2007-03-03

Placido Domingo's magnificent voice scarcely needs any introduction or praise or comments, as it is a splendid vehicle that speaks for itself. Not only is the voice - a strong, wood-grained, ringing tenor of a richer and darker sound than a pure lyric tenor - an amazing thing, a gift of God, but Domingo is himself a master of the technical demands of music (in addition to being a master of the technical demands of singing - not the same thing at all!) and a truly great singing artist.

That is, he is never content to sing without becoming the character, without expressing the emotions of the character.

The size, colour and drama of the voice make him an ideal Verdi exponent. Who could ever forget his magnificent performances in "Un ballo", "Don Carlos", "La Traviata", "Il Trovatore", and a host of other Verdi tenor roles? And the consistency of Domingo's vocal quality is something of a phenomenon. This man has had an enviable career - and it's his superb vocal technique that has carried him through it.

I particularly love the way that he varies the outpourings of that golden tone. At one moment it's all fire and blazing intensity, and the next it's a thing of restraint and tenderness. Is there anything at which to cavil in Domingo as a Verdi tenor? I do not think so...

The world has been fortunate to be gifted with such a tenor. If music itself adds meaning to our life and to existence itself, it finds an ideal servant of itself in this man who is certainly one of the finest tenors in the world.

This collection of Verdi arias represents not only the recordings of Domingo in the roles he's tackled during his long career (with some of the finest fellow singers you could imagine), but also some earlier Verdi that he'd not performed, and which he recorded specially for this multi-CD set. The result is a triumph. One can see the difference instantly between various characters - not an easy thing to do.

I would also like to recommend another set - "Der junge Domingo" (The Young Domingo), a 5-CD set released by BMG. I cannot find it here on Amazon, so I can only suggest those who are interested try alternative sources. It's a quite stunning collection - admittedly it contains "Svegliatevi nel cor" which I think is a mistake, but then it was recorded before the Handel revival and was thus less historically informed than one might wish. But really... it doesn't matter. The great beauty and intelligence of Domingo's singing shines through even that, and it's followed by a lovely "Il mio tesoro" from Mozart's Don Giovanni. Things get even better - there's a Donizetti aria from Il Duca d'Alba, the famous tenor aria from La Juive, the "Quando le sere al placido" from Luisa Miller, Lenski's aria from Eugene Onegin, some Gounod (including arias from Faust and Roméo et Juliette), the love duet from Madama Butterfly with Leontyne Price, and much more...

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Verdi Tenor The Wonderful Mr. Domingo.......2005-09-28

This is Placido Domingo's best recording to date. His greatest and strongest repertoire was Verdi, as he himself claimed, and this recording is a lovely tribute to Verdi himself. A plethora of arias from such operas as La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Aida, Don Carlos, Otello and such earlier works like Il Foscari, Jersualem, Nabucco, Stiffelio and Ernani. In Placido Domingo, the opera scene found the heir to Enrico Caruso and successor to Franco Corelli. Originally trained as a baritone, Domingo had opera in his blood. His Spanish-born parents were Zarzuela singers. Placido's voice is dark, rich, full lyric, but dramatic and compelling, the perfect voice for Verdi and Puccini. Domingo mastered a number of operatic languages including French, German and Russian. His charisma, good looks and dramatic prowess was all to his credit and he appeared in Zefferelli movies (Traviata in 82 and Otello in 86. Many detractors and critics have taken a while to praise Domingo, and it wasnt until he sang Wagner that they came around. He has always been "outshined" by Pavoratti with whom he had a real rivalry with. But unlike Pavoratti, Domingo has more dramatic integrity in his characterizations and is the more cerebral singer. His voice is more beautiful, less brassy than the overweight showy Pavoratti. This is his best recording and I urge all fans to own it at once.

          5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Achievement.......2002-12-27

This set is a recorded testimony to both Verdi's genius and Placido Domingo's versatility. Through 70's, 80's, and 90's, Domingo recorded with three major labels -- DG, RCA, and EMI. Out of these three, DG captured the most Verdi recordings, so it only was right for it to combine what they already had with newly recorded material, mostly early Verdi arias (Chung & Gergiev conducting), plus some licensed material (e.g. Giovanna D'Arco) from EMI.
What impresses right away is how little has the voice changed over the years. Yes, some freshness heard on Ingemisco is lost now, but there is much greater insight gained, as displayed in such heroic pieces as "O magnanima, e prima delle città lombarde". Through numerous performances (Domingo has long ago broke Enrico Caruso's record for opening nights at the MET) and numerous recorded recitals, Domingo managed to keep the powerful, ringing spinto tenor mostly intact. What's most intriguing is HOW did he manage it. He did not pick and choose the roles (as Bergonzi, for instance), he sang Otello since the 70's, and recently has even recorded some of Wagner's extremely demanding roles (see EMI's catalog). Domingo's voice is not typical for an Italian tenor, e.g. he does not have the squillo (or the "ping") on top notes, but what's amazing is that it is able to produce bronze-like ring on all notes. During the mid-eighties, the voice had a fascinating baritonal quality; Domingo has even recorded Il Barbiere. On this CD, the selections with Guilini reflect that period the best.
Deutsche Grammophon chose to alternate the new-recorded material with old one. As a result, those who have been devoted fans of the tenor for, say fifteen-plus years, will notice some difference, but those relatively new to his art would not.
The set, albeit not a bargain, has many delights. In addition to featuring selections from out-of-print editions (e.g. Luisa Miller with Maazel) the newly recorded material is targeted at paying homage to early Verdi and his lesser-known works. For instance, "Ah, toi que j'ai chérie" from French version of I Vespri siciliani is a great aria, makes one wish for a complete opera to be recorded some time soon. The French selections in particular show how attentive Verdi was to highlighting the beauty of language with his music. This really explains why Italian translations done later did not fare as well as the originals, and vice versa.
The selections from complete operas impress with starry casts. We hear the voices of Price, Cappuccilli, Ghiaurov, Milnes, Jo, and most wonderful choruses. And most of world's greatest conductors are present here -- Karajan, Gergiev, Kleiber, Levine, Abbado, just to name a few. Each brings his own distinct style, some controversial, some debated, all exciting, but none simply conventional.
Many have noted Domingo's chameleon-like ability to "become" the character. I would just like to add a note that he is now added the ability to infuse his characters with subtle sensuality. Granted, a tenor aria is written to be appealing and engaging, but it takes a great artist to make it "glow."
We are indeed very lucky to share a time frame with Placido Domingo. For years to come, he will be the idol for aspiring singers and a source of wonder for the numerous fans of great vocal performances.

          5 out of 5 stars VOICE.......2002-09-10

What a voice and what a power. Here we have a combination of a beautiful music and a perfect voice. What else would you need to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars superb, exhilarating, outstanding!!!!!.......2002-02-10

Pure, absolute satisfaction! That's the onlypossible feeling I could possible have after having listened and cherished this fabulous set of CD's. It is a tribute to this magnificent master of fine singing,as well as a monumental homage to the mythical Giuseppe Verdi!Placido Domingo is the perfect, harmonious combination of acting, passion and singing. He is always powerful and crystal clear in his high notes. Maestro Domingo knows every time where and when to adjust his divine voice in the appropriate tone and volume. He is never too loud(too forte!) or too low, and never croons. Although there are some trivial flaws as far as the sound quality of specific tracks is concerned e.g. the last high note from "O mio rimorso!", this CD-set is a real tresure and an excellent value for money for anyone who wishes to call oneself a "real VERDI - addict" as well as a fan of this glorious artist, a dramatic, a heroic,a lyric,a mature,a perfect singer. HAIL PLACIDO DOMINGO, TENOR OF THE TENORS!
