Compared to Rudolf Kempe's atmospheric Vienna EMI Lohengrin, Erich Leinsdorf's Boston version, in spite of expert orchestral playing (the first-desk soloists truly stand out) seems inert and studio bound by comparison. Sandor Kónya delivers the title role with personality and authority, but the remainder of the cast lacks the ensemble momentum that distinguishes the aforementioned Kempe recording. Leinsdorf, by the way, restores several bars of music to Lohengrin's Narrative originally cut by the composer. --Jed Distler

4 out of 5 stars One of the best sounding Lohengrins in the catalogue........2007-07-03

It took a while for this recording to make it back into the catalogue. The wait was worth it. Sandor Konya was simply the best Lohengrin (and Walther von Stolzing) around during his time. His voice always had enough heft for the role, but he always sang it with real beauty. As many other recordings attest, this is not the case with many other tenors. Lucine Amara replaced Leontyne Price for this recording, and is good. Her voice does not have quite the heft and color needed for the role, but she sings honestly. Jerome Hines is probably the best Heinrich on CD. He had a cannon of a voice, and used it well. William Dooley's Telramund was criticized at the time for being short on top (i.e. - the top is tight) but I don't find that to be the case. Rita Gorr, however, IS rather hard pressed to get through the third act. I don't notice her having trouble in the earlier acts, but the final outbursts are vehemently lunged at rather than sung powerfully.

Unlike my other favorite Lohengrin (Fehenberger/ Jochum), this is absolutely complete (including the Appendix to the Grail Narrative!) in amazingly real sound. When you have that long procession to the cathedral or the preludes you want great sound, and this set delivers. The voices are free and project easily through the orchestra. I don't understand why people berate Leinsdorf so much. His performances do not have the hyper energy injected artificially into them by other conductors (Solti comes to mind), true, but they unfold naturally. What a joy to hear such balanced textures throughout. And the drama is still there. Multiple hearings of this set will make you enjoy it more with every hearing. (4 stars for Gorr act three and Amara's valiant but smallish Elsa.)

3 out of 5 stars A Memento of Konya.......2007-03-02

I'm giving this three stars on the basis of Konya's singing of the title role. We are fortunate that Konya, a tenor rather neglected in the studio, left excellent recordings of Lohengrin and the Meistersinger Walther (under Kubelik).

Leontyne Price was reportedly the first choice for Elsa. It would have been an interesting opportunity to hear her in a German role. There are a few glimpses of her singing in Richard Strauss excerpts in good vocal estate and they pique my interest for what she would have done in this role. (The complete Strauss Ariadne came a few years too late to showcase her great vocal gifts.) Lucine Amara is adequate but not much more. She no Janowitz, Norman, or especially, Grummer.

The rest of the cast is significantly outclassed, especially by Fischer-Dieskau and Christa Ludwig in the rival EMI/Kempe effort. Rita Gorr, an artist I admire, handles much of the role of Ortrud pretty well, but the final scene's squalling is a trial to the ears.

The Boston Symphony is tonally opulent and brings out much of the beauty of the orchestration, an accomplishment shared by Maestro Leinsdorf. The conducting isn't, however, on a par with Kempe.

This is an interesting recording for fans of Konya and the curious. Yes, it is absolutely complete with Lohengrin's uncut grail narrative, but for a reference recording, look elsewhere. My recommendation is EMI/Kempe.

2 out of 5 stars A reminder of the wretched Leinsdorf, from sooneone who was there.......2005-09-05

I went regularly to the BSO in the Leinsdorf era, and he was a wretched conductor on the whole. Now that he's long dead, I can almost forget him, until the stiff, unyielding, utterly inert conducting on this CD set reminds me of those awful years. Lucine Amara was dragged in at the last moment as a replacement in the part of Elsa and is quite bad, completely ignorant of Wagner style, too small of voice, etc. Sandor Konya is a joy, however, the ideal Lohengrin. This is his only studio recording of the role that made him famous, but you can find the same sweet-voiced performance on off-labels from live performances.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!.......2005-06-06

I'll keep my words short.

It's Pure magic all the way through, full of beauty, fire, drama, and weight...plus you get the complete full Act 3 Grail narration!

It's like a book you can't put down because it's so good!

Just get it and you will fall in love with Lohengrin in a whole way you never new possible!

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Introduction to a Great Opera.......2003-09-28

LOHENGRIN is been one of Wagner's best known works, and contains two of his best known musical pieces: The Prelude to Act III and the well known Bridal Chorus that is a staple at most weddings. In the early twentieth century it was one of the most popular operas performed at the Met. Is not all that surprising that the work is so well loved. Fans of Wagner have all the elements that make a Wagnerian opera great: powerful music and a mythic plot which tells the story of the Knight Lohengrin, son of Parsifal and Kundry. For music lovers who find Wagner a bit too off-putting or heavy, it has more of the elements of French and Italian operas than Wagner's later works such as the four operas that make up the Ring Cycle or Tristan and Isolde.

Recording Richard Wagner is a troublesome task. His works require such power that something in each recording seems to be missing. Sometimes it is the quality if the singing, at other times it is the orchestra or perhaps the conductor cannot hold the piece together. The Boston Symphony Orchestra's version of LOHENGRIN with Erich Leinsdorf seems to come pretty close to being perfect. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has a reputation for excellence and Leinsdorf was certainly one of its legendary conductors. He is able to use the full depth and abilities of the BSO to give this great work its due. Sandor Konya is Lohengrin. At one moment he can be a powerful heldentenor, at other moments he is able to sing with delicate grace and beauty. Lucine Amara's Elsa is sheer beauty. Jerome Hines is superb as the King. My only objection to the set is Rita Gorr's Ortrud. While she is a mezzo with great ability, and her character in this opera is supposed to be a bit shrilly, at time she is too brash and it comes across almost as screaming rather than singing. Once a person is used to her rendition of Ortrud, it becomes barely noticeable, but it dopes take some getting used to.

I have listened to other recordings of this work, as well as live broadcasts from the Met, (quite honestly it is difficult to judge the work from a Met broadcast a few years ago since the audience let its displeasure with the sets be known with a series of boos that seemed to have an effect on the music as well), yet this continues to be the recording I enjoy most. As another reviewer noted, there are cuts in this version, which was not uncommon for longer operas recorded in 1965 as this recording was, however the strengths of this recording still make it my favorite rendition of this work.

    5 out of 5 stars A Surprise from Transylvania.......2000-06-30

Nimbus Records are rumored to headquarter in the stones of an ancient castle: our curiosity leads us to wonder whether those historic blocks and their inhabitants are related in some most unnatural way to the Transylvanian treasures on this disc.

We have Nicolae Bretan-the Transylvanian composer of heart-rendingly beautiful melodies; the lyrics of the Old World's most soulful-Goga, Ady, Eminescu, Cosbuc, Eftimiu, Rilke; the superb singing and playing of Transylvania's baritone Ludovic Konya and pianist Ferdinand Weiss.

The cover and tray card tell us about the baritone and pianist, but the real surprise is within: once one looses the nails from the shrink-wrapped jewel-case/coffin, and crow-bars out the gothic-proportioned booklet from its crypt, one discovers that Nimbus have kept another pianist-Martin Berkofsky-prisoner in its dungeon.

Perhaps this Berkofsky is not allowed into the daylight, or worse, perhaps Nimbus have already dosed him with the requisite stake in the heart. Neverthess be Berkofsky one of the living or one of the living dead, his partnership (eight of the 22 tracks on this disc,) with Konya reaches those rare and sublime heights of truth to the composer.

Nimbus' crypt yields no biographical information of any of the performers and we wonder if they all are cursed to perpetual darkness.

Or perhaps this is all a clever advertising ploy like the soft-drinks' purveyors "open to see if you have won a prize." We have opened and we have definitely won a grand prize.

I listened to this all-new CD of "Rozen Maiden - Bara no Kaori no Garden Pary" series last night. I have been waiting for this vol. 2 after I have listened to the first radio CD of Suigintou. Before I listened to this, I have had a look at the booklet went with the CD and have known that not only Suiseiseki but also Souseiseki as the guests of Suigintou's radio programme this time, I thought that performance in this CD must be much more lively than the one before.
In the one before this, Kakizaki Megu had come up as a guest in the radio programme, but this time, she has become a assistant of the radio station, then her appearance seemed more reasonable and that made Suigintou very confused and couldn't do nothing about it. Condition like this also came up in last CD and always makes me laugh. There is a interlude of radio programme performed by Suiseiseki, Souseiseki, Shinku and Jun. Well, this programme makes the following stories more interesting and humorous. Suiseiseki get jealousy because that Suigintou has her own radio programme but Suiseiseki doesn't. Souseiseki said that Suigintou is the most beloved character in Rozen Maiden. Then Suiseiseki felt ill-affected and decided to challenge against Suigintou to prove that how excellent she was. On the other hand, Shinku was depressed because knew that she wasn't the most beloved in Rozen Maiden.
"Suigintou no Junku ni Shi Te Ageru" this time is not like the one before. This time, who chaired this programme were not only Suigintou but also Suiseiseki, Souseiseki and Kakizaki Megu. In fact, this programme is Suiseiseki's challenge to Suigintou. In this programme, maybe it's because of that Megu supported Suigintou's opinion, she also seemed a little evil.^^b Programme this time seemed much more lively indeed.
In the programme "Watashi no Kuroi Tenshisama" when answering the questions from fans, Suigintou told us how old she is! I was really surprised she told us this! 17 years old... Mmm... Should we believe this?^^b What the last letter from fans said makes me laugh, maybe... it's from a cat... There was only a word "Meow" in the letter! Well...
After all the programme finished, all 6 voice atresses got together and talked about how they thought of the programme, seemed very happy. What's more, this makes me look forward to next CD of "Rozen Maiden - Bara no Kaori no Garden Party" series very much!^^

      Album Description

An album that combines Eastern rhythms with the technology (synthesizer) of the West. It features authentic Sufi-rhythms with contemporary influences. Music that carries you away to otherwise unreachable spheres.

4 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Rhythm Well Worth It.......1999-11-26

This is an unusual album for this underappreciated artist. The title track, Konya, is one of the most mesmerizing and rhythmic pieces I have ever heard. The other tracks are also worthwhile, but Konya is particularly impressive. Well worth it!

1 out of 5 stars a low point for al gromer kahn.......1999-01-13

Al Gromer Kahn is known for his excellent ambient music, which is unlike most other artists. His work is in deserve of praise and respect. However, Konya sounds like an underdeveloped rip-off, which is exactly what this CD is. The CD is only a short 33 minutes or so. The title song, "Konya," is a dull sludge that also closes out the CD. The second song, "Anahat 841," is really not to bad. But the third track is infected with the theme title track "Konya" towards the end. Apparently, Gromer didn't have another track to finish off the CD, so he uses the one that starts it, which is unfortunate for the person who shells out $14.00 plus for this miserable piece of plastic. "Unfortunate" would have been a more appropriate title for this lame work.

        5 out of 5 stars Sandor Konya's Glorious Knight.......2007-04-25

At last count I had 18 Lohengrins - an opera very dear to my heart for many musical and personal reasons. The acclaimed Hungarian tenor Sandor Konya in this performance is the most romantic and gorgeous Lohengrin of the lot. He sings here with an unique Italianate lyricism distinctly different from other tenors who have taken on this role. The Musical Times described his Lohengrin as "one of the high points of post-war Wagner interpretation."

His recording with von Matacic is vastly superior to that on the more famous Leinsdorf recording. That later studio version is a disappointment if you've heard this live performance which crackles with feverish intensity and smolders with libidinal romanticism.

The conducting is lush and thrilling - the great Croatian conductor Lovro von Matacic deserves more attention than he receives, and here he is at his most compelling. His conducting has a luxurious expressiveness that accentuates the sensuality and dramatic potency of this mystically voluptuous opera.

Von Matacic builds the dramatic structure to a heart-stopping finale of apocalyptic proportion. When Ortrud belts out "Fahr heim! Fahr heim!" you believe it! This is a frightening moment that many singers can't successfully pull off. The usually abrasive Rita Gorr rises to the occasion and gives us an Ortrud of terrifying intensity. Ernest Blanc is superb as the hen-pecked Friedrich, singing with great beauty and vulnerability. As marvelous an evil couple as you'll find anywhere.

Elisabeth Grummer is her usual perfect self.
I can't recommend this Lohengrin enough. It's absolutely wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Lohengrin Ever.......2005-09-15

I thought Rudolph Kempe's Lohengrin with Jess Thomas was the best until I heard this one. Shandor Konya's voice and interpretation are just thrilling. He is tender, heroic, gentle and powerful, whatever he needs to be at the moment -- a true romantic hero. The accompanying cast is also excellent. Lohengrin was never my favorite Wagner, but after this recording it may become. Matacic is at his best and the Bayreuth sound better than some studio recordings I have. Well worth the money spent.

5 out of 5 stars The finest LOHENGRIN...........2000-04-24

Very simply this may be the finest LOHNGRIN committed to disc. Lovro von Matacic conducts a performance that is superb in every way. His Lohngrin--Sandor Konya, and his Elisabeth--Elisabeth Grummer, are ideal artists for these roles [Those who heard Konya in performance will remember!]. Bill Youngren in FANFARE called this the "perfect" LOHNGRIN; I concur. Despite the competition--and it is fierce--this is THE LOHENGRIN of one's dreams. No libretto, but don't let that stop you.

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite the Ultimate Lohengrin.......2001-09-01

Even though I own the EMI Lohengrin also conducted by Kempe, I purchased this performance for the unmatched combination of Kempe and Sandor Konya in an authentic live performance. It IS an often more exciting and more flexible performance than the famous studio recording. Each Act builds more intensely to its conclusion.

Still, I have a problem with this and other unofficial Bayreuth recordings. This has always been an unusual and difficult theatre to record in, however wonderful it is to experience live. Without careful balancing, and access to the orchestra pit, we get powerfully projected voices and a weak, thin, and colorless orchestra! I do not think this was the projection envisioned by Rudolf Kempe , so this set does not honor his memory.

If you are fascinated by Konya's noble and powerful Lohengrin ( this set is more satisfying than the RCA studio production- even with the unbalanced sound!) or by Bayreuth performances from this period, these discs will be valuable. As a Lohengrin for repeated listening, I would recommend the imperfect but still beautiful EMI recording from 1962, or the magnificently played and recorded Solti performance on London.

Whatever your choice, Lohengrin is a great work to begin exploring Wagner with. It has the intensity and power of his later works, but is more accessable vocally. Placido Domingo, on the Solti set, is downright sensuous! Any great performance radiates a silvery sheen that stays in your memory long after the 'curtain' falls.
