The More I Listen, The More I'm Sold on It........2007-03-27

When I bought this cd, 4/5 yrs. ago, I thought: Yes, it's a fine attempt. But lately I went back and listened to it again. Oh, boy, I'm so glad I did, over and over and over again. This cd is a true joy, a triumph of the spirit, for even those who don't know about Bola de Nieve are transported to a higher realm.
The facts:
Certainly, Bola is the best of teachers as a performer. But Ms. Ramos brings her own atributes to the challenge. She must have pondered: A tribute to Bola that doesn't make me sound as a copycat?
For one, she has one of the most beautiful voices among Cuban songtresses of the last 30 years or so. Its velvety sheen makes it sound so warm, so intimate. It's an almost perfect vehicle.
However, not only that. Ms. Ramos is such an intelligent and sensitive artist! She really knows how to deliver a song effectively and effortlessly. Think a dash of Ute Lemper, a sprinkle of Juliette Greco, some Miriam Acevedo, and the youthful innocence of one who is all hope and love, all rolled into one. Just listen to "Estas en mi", or even better, listen to "La Vie en Rose", so ebullient and full of the kind of felicity that only true lovers enjoy. And can I go beyond without being disrespectful to Bola? At times I feel that her reading of certain songs is even better than Bola's.
The only thing that I find out of character is "Drume negrita'. It's hard to think of Ms. Ramos, a white woman, singing in Spanish patois to a little black girl.
Mr. Allen's at the piano is certainly a magnificent plus. Knowing when to take a second seat to the singer is an art in itself, so rarely found these days. And Mr. Allen is a master in this very important aspect.
Finally, if you don't own this cd, run to the store and get it, for you're missing a very important link in Cuban music. You'll fall in love with it, slowly, enjoying every second of it, as I did.

Miriam Ramos, una de las mejores cantantes cubanas de todos los tiempos y posiblemente la más inteligente, ha concebido este álbum como un homenaje al compositor e intérprete Bola de Nieve. Acompañada por el pianista Andrés Alen, Miriam re-crea algunas de las canciones que hicieron de Bola de Nieve una leyenda, y les da otra dimensión, casi mágica, con su voz llena de sutilezas y emotividad. Una vez me llevé la sorpresa de que alguien a quien tenía como un excelente conocedor de la música popular cubana, confesó que nunca había escuchado a Miriam Ramos. Lamentable, porque sin esta artista de rara perfección, la música cubana carecería de una de sus más singulares joyas.
