Amazon.com essential recording
Like a lot of his jam-band compatriots, Dave Matthews's personality can come off as muted in the studio, but really spreads out live--which makes this a must-have for fans who don't already have the bootleg, or nineteen more from the same period. But absent a hits sampler, Live at Red Rocks could also be the best Matthews album for more tentative listeners. It draws heavily from the Under the Table and Dreaming material, as well as from the then-upcoming Crash. "All Along the Watchtower," previously only available on an indie EP, ends the set. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:

This 2 disc jam fest may be a shock to newer DMB fans, who are used to the radio hits.

RR95 (as hardcore fans have abbriviated it) starts off with Seek Up, which dictates the pace for the rest of the concert.
the first disc is golden, straying from the radio singles(except for Satlelite which is amazing on this recording)

A Terrific -- if Somewhat Misleading -- Place to Start.......2006-01-02
The Golden Era ('67 to '72) had come and gone, but the legacy of the Moodies' "Big Seven" was Big Time Entertainment in the "head set" of the time. As well as much cause for discussion: The music -was- terrific, but so were the lyrics (see my review of "To Our Children's Children's Children" elsewhere). The more literate folks -- including many in the entertainment industry -- on LA's West Side were as busy dissecting them for meaning as the folks on -Manhattan's- (upper) West Side. "God was Speaking to Us," we all just knew, "and these guys are His Prophets."
If ANARR has a flaw, it's that the lyrics (and the songs) that drove us into a spiritual frenzy in those days are largely missing from what is an otherwise -super- collection. I'll forgive it myself, largely on the strength of having seen the same show on a tennis court in Indian Wells in 1994 when I really -needed- a major distraction. They delivered then as they do on this terrific double album, combining at least some of symphonic hits that established them as The Real Deal (after establishing a "pop" rep in the mid-'60s) with the MTV-era hits in the '80s, all of which are Just Fine, Thank You.
As suggested vis Pink Floyd's "Delicate Sound of Thunder" on -that- Amazon page, if you're going to take a flyer at this band, -this- album is as good a place to start as any, at least to get a taste for the -music-. But -do- bear in mind that the -poetry- that made them cult icons in the Grand Days of Psychedelia is elsewhere, specifically on "TOCCC," "On the Threshhold of a Dream," "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" and "A Question of Balance." If the names Rogers, Perls, Neitsche, Hesse, Poe, Casteneda, Bradshaw, Miller, Krishna Murti, Si Baba and Ram Dass ring any bells for you, those lyrics will paint some real pretty pictures.

To be my Moody Blues CD.......2004-02-16
Then, while living overseas in a former British colony, I picked up a British rock encyclopedia. It's somewhat limited, leaves out many of the pop/rock bands that have gone by the wayside after their heyday was over. But under the Moody Blues in the book, the author(s) seemed to think that the MBs made it more in the US than in the UK, that people tired of their "cosmic messages." That struck a (lost?) chord with me.
Since then, I talked with a member of the National Symphony who once backed the MBs. He said the orchestra was merely a stage prop, that nothing they played could be heard (and that the MB's management particularly was arrogant and obnoxious.
Well, onto the music.
Yeah, some of it is okay in terms of melody. If I were into dancing--which I'm not--I wouldn't enjoy it. But, yeah, I can hum along. But I can only picture the orchestra, brilliant musicians, overshadowed by the pseudo-deep pop stars.
In short, if you like their music, this is the one I'd get for people who, when they're at your house, ask if you have any Moody Blues. I doubt, though, that I'll get any more. There's variety, tunes from a number of their albums without too much fluff. It even sounds like a show I may have liked to attend, though, I'm not much for rock concerts, let along "prog rock." But this'll do. Enjoy it for when the MBs have another reunion--bound to happen until they turn 70.
Beats Them All For Live Sound.......2004-01-23
The song selection is standard (or classic) Moody Blues, but the Colorado Symphony adds so much more ambiance. It is not a perfect orchestra, which makes it all the more appealing with a rock band. The booklet contains great information with photos and a thoughtful essay. The DVD makes a nice companion piece, but the sound through a set of headphones is mesmerizing. The only drawback might be the songs from, "Keys To The Kingdom", but that's not much to complain about.

John Tesh's name is often associated with the notion of bad music. This is an unfortunate and unfair perception since Tesh actually exhibits commendable skills in a little-explored musical niche--the pop-rock instrumental. Those talents are nicely displayed on this audio rendering of his 1995 performance (in the company of the Colorado Symphony) at suburban Denver's Red Rocks Amphitheater. Influenced by old-line progressive acts such as Rush and Yes, Tesh specializes in creating instrumental tempests in pop-music teacups, framing his favorite themes--optimism, romance, and triumph--with anticipation-building preludes and melodic, high-octane crescendos. Among many flavorful selections, his best include the engaging dual melodies that adorn "Garden City" and the chest-swelling progression of "A Thousand Summers." The music works here better than it does on the video shown on PBS, since you don't have to watch all the mugging and choreographed prancing shared by Tesh and his eight backup musicians. The Collector's Edition of this release includes a six-song, 23-minute bonus CD that includes "Roundball Rock" (heard on NBC's NBA telecasts) and a few other of Tesh's broadcast themes. --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:

exceptional, a must have album.......2006-11-12
Magic of Red Rocks and the Orchestra is there - Production is Not.......2006-01-09
In particular, the Moody Blues were tailor-made for a performance with an Orchestra. Fusion has always been a key element in the Moody Blues' performances. Their music genre is a fusion of Classic and Progressive Rock even though they have their roots in R&B. At the same time they have incorporated orchestral elements into their performance. The instrument that has always stood out has been the use of the Flute by Ray Thomas
For the most part, I look at the Moody Blues as having three types of sound that are a part of this concert. The progressive sound is going to be the bulk of the performance. There is also a psychedelic element to much of these songs as well. These songs are where the Orchestra is going to play a stronger role in the concert. These songs include "Tuesday Afternoon", "For My Lady", "Lean on Me", "Isn't Life Strange", "The Other Side of Life", "Nights in White Satin", and "Question". It is worth noting the concert opener "Overture" is driven by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra" while "Late Lament" is a spoken track.
The second sound is what I call their mainstream sound - a sound most heard in the 1980s. There are three songs that are done that are familiar to most people. They are all done back to back during the performance - and I think that is a good thing. These songs don't get much help from the Orchestra but they don't need it. The songs are "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "The Voice", and "Your Wildest Dreams". Many have said that "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" is sort of a sequel to "Your Wildest Dreams". On a side note, I would have liked to have seem "Somewhere" done after "Your Wildest Dreams". Another side note is it would have been nice to see what the Orchestra could do here.
The final one is the Classic Rock sound. I'll also put their R&B roots into this category since Blues has influenced many a Classic Rock artist. The concert selection gives us songs such "Lovely to See You", "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band", and "Ride My See Saw". In these songs, the Moody Blues don't need much help from the Orchestra - although in some cases, it would have also been great to see what the Orchestra would do. I happen to think "Ride My See Saw" is one of the greatest concert finales you will ever hear. This is a very good song, but it goes to legendary proportions when heard live. Often there isn't a person in the audience sitting for this song. It's clear that the setting of Red Rocks takes this song up a notch. It is worth noting that "I'm Just a Singer" gets some nice horn work from the orchestra.
The music is terrific. In fact, I normally like when a Live Album is taken from a Single Night's performance as opposed to being a "compilation" of live performances. This allows you to "capture" the magic of one night. The performance this album was taken from September 9, 1992 - and that's a good thing. Here is where the problem comes: The entire night's performance is not there. There were other songs that are on the remastered version and DVD version. In addition, there is no "crowd noise" continuity from track to track. Even on "live compilations", I've seen the album's production simulate that the concert is from one night. For this "special" performance, it would have been great to capture the sounds of the audience when going from track to track. Instead we something that does sound like a collection of 15 tracks.
The liner notes don't contain a lot of information, but the best are a short blurb from each of the band members on their thoughts about that particular night's performance. Overall I had very high expectations of this particular performance - and while there is a lot of quality music on this collection, the points about the continuity and lack of the use of the orchestra ultimately take things down from "5 Stars". I'd also try to get the more complete remastered version.
Very entertaining!.......2002-07-11
Most of their well-known favorites are present included strong versions of "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "The Other Side Of Life", "Question", and "Ride My See-Saw". The high notes are a little harder to hit and the harmony is not quite as impressive as in the old days, but Lodge, Hayward, Thomas and Edge still play with energy and fervor and act as if they are enjoying themselves.
The Colorado Symphony Orchestra holds up their end of this concert well, and while, they aren't the London Festival Orchestra (from the original "Days of Future Passed") they are certainly skilled musicians who help make this a memorable album.
And, while I agree with one of the other reviewers about the quality of the CD (it IS hard to pick up some of the bass and drum work), as live albums go, this is a keeper and should be part of your collection! A definite "must-have" for Moody Blues fans!

Time was when Rickie Lee Jones and Tom Waits were fellow travelers with a shared neo-boho, singer-songwriter style, the self-conscious musical equivalent of characters from an Edward Hopper tableau. But unlike Waits, who got in touch with his inner Beefheart and embraced a more avant-garde approach, Jones has largely stayed the cocktail crooner course, refining her melodic sensibility and continuing to inject generous doses of folk, jazz, R&B, and world music influences into her itinerant hipster shtick. (Strains of reggae, zydeco, and Dixieland, along with a vocal assist from Lyle Lovett, find their way into this album's version of "Love Is Gonna Bring Us Back Alive.") Compared to Naked Songs, her 1994 plunge into the realm of the unplugged, this live outing is more representative of the full range of Jones's strengths, with gloriously polished yet vital renditions of favorites such as "Rodeo Girl," "Satellites," "Coolsville," and the obligatory "Chuck E.'s in Love." Along the way, Jones serves up memorable covers of "Gloria" and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," dispenses onstage parental advice, and, inspired by exceptional vocal and instrumental arrangements throughout, generally sings up a storm. Like Joni Mitchell before her and Sophie B. Hawkins after, Jones may no longer be the commercial flavor of the month, but this live recording serves as an engaging testament to her steadfast artistry. --Bill FormanAlbum Description

Appealing Addition.......2007-03-11
Great performance, poor recording.......2003-03-28
I enjoy "raw" live recordings like those from bands like moe. But this CD could have used a scrubbing in post-production. It sounds like a bootleg. And that would be okay, too, but for the too frequent dropouts in the left or right channel (really noticeable with headphones), and the subtle but all too present hum of the amplifiers in the background.
My advice is to check out this recording for yourself before buying it. You may love it. But it left me feeling a bit annoyed and disappointed.
Not like the live stuff from her Web site.......2001-12-19
she sells MP3 live recordings, direct to you. There you will
find the opposite of this one: quieter, looser, quirkier. The
offerings there (www.rickieleejones.com) are also often complete
shows. This one *is* as the other reviews suggest: (high-)
powered, poppy, punchy. The thing is, I don't know Rickie Lee
and neither do you (and neither do these other reviewers). So
who can comment on her wishes, and who knows but what she wants
all of these sides of her performance persona exposed. In this
performance, she took pains to put together a *very* slick band,
complete with muted trumpet ornaments, multi-part harmonies,
etc. And it rocks. And if you feel like complaining about the
slick production, save your breath and your time, go to her
website, and download the quiet sensitive stuff until your
fingers go numb. That stuff is great, too!
Maybe You Had To Be There?.......2001-12-12
Lyle Lovett opened for RLJ; and was really good too. I highly recommend this cd to RLJ fans. If you like Rickie Lee; and live cds you will appreciate this; the energy comes through!
the label must have made her..........2001-12-12
If you want the radio version of Rickie Lee Jones, by all means, be my guest. But if you've bought her last five CDs and prefer the introspective, thoughtful, clever and occasionally disturbing Rickie Lee, then you really need her acoustic live CD.
It made me sad to listen to this, because I can't image that RLJ really wanted to make this CD. If she did, I can't wait to hear her next studio CD, which I'm sure would be both a crowd pleaser and insightful. As it is, this belongs on Top 40, I'm afraid.

Taking their moniker from the vodu priest at the forefront of the Haitian slave revolution of the early 19th century, Boukman Eksperyans are very much a band for the people, of the people. Blending the deeply controversial traditional religion vodu with Haitian folk forms and modern instrumentation of rock, funk, and jazz, Boukman make music for dancing, praying, trancing out, and in short elevating both the audience and themselves spiritually and politically. This recording, captured during Reggae at Red Rocks in August 1998, is revivalistic in nature: leader Lolo Beaubrun orates between songs, asserting that vodu (and in turn Boukman's offering of praise) comes from the same oneness that was taught by Jesus, Buddha, and Krishna, among others. Shot through with the complex rhythms coaxed from a borrowed Latin drum set, the spicily romantic French Creole tongue, and feisty guitar lines, the set is taken largely from Boukman's acclaimed Revolution album, coming to a head with "Pawol Tafia (The Drunkard's Words)," an ultimately celebratory anthem of freedom. --Paige La Grone

This Carolina quintet's debut studio album, "Throwin' Rocks at the Moon," has craft to spare. Some of the credit must go to producer Pete Anderson, who stripped away the excess and revealed the essential core of the songs. Most of the credit, though, must go to singer/guitarists Chip Robinson and Stephen Howell, who have written songs full of tenderness, melancholy and joyful release and have given them vocals which suggest as much as they state. "Hey Sheriff" has been transformed from a melodramatic bar-band blues into a moody honky-tonk tune where the defiant confrontation with the police is now tinged with fear and desperation. But when the Backsliders decide to rock out, as they do on "My Baby's Gone" and the title track, they do so with an infectious abandon that's hard to resist. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:
