Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

4 out of 5 stars very beautiful.......2007-01-09

This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03

Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

5 out of 5 stars from texas--AND FROM A MUSIC LOVER.......2006-08-30

ANDRE RIEU TAKES US ON A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK IN TIME TO THE MOVIES YOU CAN=T FORGET AND THE MUSIC THAT MADE THEM CLASSICS. DO BUY IT. IT IS A TREASURE...

4 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

The 1997 Academy Award winner for Best Dramatic Score, James Horner's Titanic was the first soundtrack to reach the No. 1 slot on the Billboard charts in two decades; it also seemed to rival the Big Mac in sales for the year. And what can we say about Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"; would "ubiquitous" suffice?

Horner's combination of synths, chorale, and orchestra perfectly underscores the action in director James Cameron's 20th-century melodrama. It's a finely honed piece of Hollywood craftsmanship from a composer who has tackled more musically adventuresome projects in his career. FYI: Horner's follow-up to Titanic was the score for a different disaster: Deep Impact. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Titanic.......2007-08-07

Love this soundtrack, I had lost my other copy. Bought this as a replacement.

5 out of 5 stars Not memorable? I digress!.......2007-06-03

My review is not only to express the love I feel for this soundtrack, but to also to serve as a rebuttal for less favorable reviews.

James Horner's music for Titanic is just wonderful. I cannot even begin to describe what it means to me, personally. Every song is beautiful. Each portrays the emotions of the film with perfection. If you believe that the songs switch emotions too quickly, as if from happiness to despair, I see where you're coming from. However, that is the emotion needed to be expressed! Titanic was a disaster. So many of the passengers were filled with hope and happiness, and then it all came crashing down upon them. It all happened so quickly. For those who say the music is not very memorable, I disagree completely. I put the soundtrack on in the car, and my brother (who is currently 12 years old) remembered it immediately. He has not seen the movie since 1998, when he was three years old. That, to me, proves that this soundtrack is not only beautiful, but is easily recalled because of the fact.

Now, you are open to your own opinions. But this is mine. This soundtrack means so much to me, as does the film from which it comes. It is beautiful, and so emotional. I could listen to it all day, and sometimes I can't listen to it without crying. It's very powerful. I, of course, recommend it, but not if you haven't seen Titanic. If you didn't like Titanic, I don't even know why you would consider it, if only to post bad reviews. Again, this is just an incredibly beautiful soundtrack.

Sincerely,
A 15-year-old fan.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as the Movie itself! .......2007-05-26

The music creates a mood that captures the movie and the story - but it also is great for listening to as you sit writing on your computer, relax in your backyard on a summer day or sit in the front room by the fire on a cold winter night. It makes your mind reflect on your own life and is great for day dreaming. The music is soft and emotional and yet relaxing as well.

If you loved the movie you will enjoy the music even more.

2 out of 5 stars Relive the Movie by Memory.......2007-05-13

I was somewhat disappointed that the CD was predominantly instrumental, but on the other hand as one listened, the music moved you emotionally through each scene of the movie. A strange and different way to experience the "Titanic" movie.

4 out of 5 stars a very good cd, except for the fact they excluded some songs.......2007-05-09

Titanic is one of my favorite movies and part of that is the music in the movie. The music can be beautiful, haunting, intense, happy, and sad. The only thing I wish they had was the 3rd class music because that is really my favorite song.
Never an Absolution-(3.5/5)its not the best song, but I still think its pretty. i'm pretty sure the part after the bagpipes is the begining of the movie.
Distant Memories-(4/5)its when Rose first sees the picture and calls lovett and then comes. i think the begining is played again when she looks at her picture and when she looks at various parts of the ship remembering what they looked like.
Southhampton-(4/5)the energetic music that appears when the ship comes "back to life". its an ok song, but I like it better then Leaving port and Take her to Sea, Mr Murdoch.
Rose-(5/5)this is one of my favorites. its the melody that is my heart will go on. I actually like this version better then my heart will go on. Its more romantic and haunting.
Leaving Port-(2/5)this is probably my least favorite song mostly because it has the unfortunate fate of being right after one of the best songs. I like the begining but after that its like a little Southhampton and Take her to Sea, Mr. Murdoch.
Take her to Sea, Mr Murdoch-(3.5/5)i like this song in the begining and then the end. the middle is long winded and I usually find my self not listening to that part. This is when they spead up the ship and they show how it spead up.
Hard to Starboard-(5/5)another version of my heart will go on sense this is when Rose and Jack are doing it. then it turns into an intense slightly scary song that takes place right before they hit the iceberg till they hit the iceburg and come to a full stop.
Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave-(5/5)this is probably my favorite song just because its gorgeous and this is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. I wish the song was longer, but oh well. The end of the song is when Cal chases them down the stairs with a gun.
The Sinking-(4.5/5)its a very intense song and I love it for the most part. Though sometimes I skip over it or skip parts. It's a little long, but I think they used most of this in the movie.
Death of Titanic-(4/5)my biggest complaint is that its long and I do skip over parts. The last part saves it with the scary sound affects that are supposed to be peoples screams I think. This song has a little bit of everything, though I can only place some of it in the movie.
A Promise Kept-(4/5)its spooky but calm. this is starts right before Jack dies and ends when Rose saves herself.
A life so Changed-(5/5)maybe I just like the vocals or something but this is one of my favorites. Its played when Rose and the other 700 people are saved by Carpathia.
An Ocean of Memories-(4/5)like with Death of titanic its long enough that I skip to parts I like. I think it contains the end part where she goes to heaven.
My Heart will go on-(4.5/5)i like this song, but there are moments that I think she over does it a bit.
Hymn to the Sea-(5/5)this is another one of my favorites. i think this was the song that was never used. to bad really its one of the best songs on this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Would you like ketchup with your bug?.......2007-05-05

The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!

Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Dublin.......2006-07-05

This concert is magnificent in its energy and in the great performances by Andre Rieu and the Johann Stauss orchestra. I watch it when I need lifting up. I love the audience interaction which makes me feel as if I'm there in person.

5 out of 5 stars Live audience is great........2006-05-03

This has to be one of Andre's best. The live audience adds much to the music being played. I wish I had been there for the performance.

Unlike the boat it's named after, this show truly rose from the bottom. Despite detractors predicting doom before it had even opened, Titanic overcame hectic previews and endless technical problems to win a Tony for best musical and turn into a commercial success. Despite the fact that favorite performers like Judith Blazer or Victoria Clark disappear in the crowd and don't get solos of note, the show still manages to bring to life affecting characters. Maury Yeston's (Grand Hotel) score has the required majesty without ever being turgid, and the choral work he coaxes from his ensemble is eminently powerful. Though it requires a fair amount of attention on the listener's part, Titanic is also surprisingly emotional--its majestic finale packs more punch than 3 hours of Leonardo DiCaprio. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Titanic original cast recording.......2007-03-08

Wow a great musical do not understand why it was cancelled in this country. The music and lyrics are very moving and make great listening. I will have to visit USA to see it I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE MUSICAL!!!!!.......2006-07-26

This is my all-time favorite musical! It really works out when you're in love with Broadway Musicals and Titanic, like me! Michael Cerevis really shines as the builder Thomas Andrews in the song "In Every Age", as does Brian d'Arcy James as stoker Frederick Barrett in "Barrett's Song". This recording is definately worth your money for the most part and you'll probably love it almost as much as do.

Very good CD not normally that easily available but delivered on time for a reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite musical EVER!.......2006-04-01

I was in this musical when I was nine. Since then, all I have to remember it has been a tape of that amateur production, and I *still* remember is vividly and love. It's just so MOVING. There are so many characters, and you can feel for every one of htem. Some people complained about all the characters, but that makes the musical better, in my opinion. You can see how the sinking affected EVERYONE. The music's great too!

4 out of 5 stars A great recording.......2006-03-17

Wonderful recording of a relatively unknown show. Would still recommend seeing the musical live as the recording does not have all the songs on, which is a shame as they have cut some of the most exciting steerage class bits! But certainly gives a good flavour of the show.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the serious flautist.......2006-06-10

Most of the tracks on this CD consist of saccharine fluff, such as Disney, show-tunes, etc. If I buy a flute recording, I want to hear some serious music, not this ghastly schmaltz. And I hate to say it, I'm not a huge fan of Galway's playing style. It's too light and airy, just on the edge of going into overtones. He overuses his vibrato, especially on the higher notes. When you want them to just smoothly soar with rich tone, they just sort of flutter about. He does have impeccable technique and speed, but his tone leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Seek out another artist!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of James Galway.......2005-09-23

Really is one of the best of James Galway, if not the very best. Easy listening, soothing, relaxing - easy to enjoy

3 out of 5 stars Lightweight.......2005-08-24

Admirers of James Galway as a superb classical flutist, of whom I am one, should be forewarned that this 2002 release has been packaged by the mass merchandisers for the "crossover" crowd and the mass market: there's slim pickin's here for serious music lovers. The first CD contains brief, lightweight classical "hits" in "arranged" versions, basically encore bonbons, while almost the entire second CD is devoted to ephemeral, forgettable pop fluff. There's not much of substance here; given Galway's vast (over 50 recordings) discography, the classical music lover would be well advised to look elsewhere.

Fans of the Titanic soundtrack will undoubtedly appreciate this sequel, a collection of original music and background tunes not found on the first disc. They won't be disappointed. The newly composed "Titanic Suite" and "Epilogue: The Deep and Timeless Sea" are patchwork quilts of James Horner's most moving themes from the movie. Despite a few awkward transitions in "Suite" (where melodies move from somber to uplifting), the compositions--played by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Choirsters of King's College, Cambridge--work well. There's also a lot of diversity here, such as Gaelic Storm's lively "An Irish Party in Third Class" and chamber group I Salonisti's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "Nearer My God to Thee." The misses are few: the breathy Maire Brennan's "Come Josephine, in My Flying Machine" is lethargic, and the movie dialogue peppering several songs (including Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On") is more distracting than effective. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Back to memories of your own.......2007-07-14

I purchased this product by Amazon. I satishfied much for the service. As to the album, whenever I listen to this I recall old memories amazingly. I wonder why... I strongly recommend you to listen to and, properly speaking, would be better for you to have it.

3 out of 5 stars Good for Fanatics.......2007-06-14

This is an elegant compilation of James Horner's music from the film Titanic; however, it was not meant to be the primary score. Titanic fans who couldn't get enough out of the original score drove Horner to produce Back to Titanic. The songs are beautiful, the use of the orchestra is brilliant, but the songs are not orthodox-Titanic. Probably two or three tracks actually were derived from the film--the rest sound like fillers. I recommend this album to Horner/diehard Titanic fans, but if you're just seeking the Titanic music, settle for the original.

2 out of 5 stars Wait! Haven't I heard this before?!.......2007-03-17

Quite a bit of this cd relies on tracks with dialogue from the movie embedded in the background, such as 'An Irish Party In Third Class' where you can hear both Rose and Jack talking to each other as they dance. This makes the songs unlistenable for the most part because you're not listening to just music, but pretty much the same as if you had the movie on, weren't watching it, and were just hearing it whilst you did something else.
The songs which don't have dialogue are nothing special, you could probably find the similar on the first soundtrack.

The beauty of the whole album is the lovely version of 'Come Josephine In My Flying Machine' (again, ruined by Rose's movie quotes) but it's enough to make you glad you bought the album.

However, unless you're a dedicated classical music fan who likes long strung-out piano pieces and organs, you'd be best to steer your ship away from this album which was only made to create more wealth for James Cameron and his crew, and stick with the original soundtrack.
A 'shelf-sitter' for the most part, how many times you'll feel the need to put this on, I doubt there will be an overwhelming urge.
More of the same, less of the power.

Noteworthy tracks: 'A Building Panic', 'Nearer My God To Thee', 'Titanic Suite'.

2 out of 5 stars Leftovers and inspired by's.......2006-10-18

I'm not ashamed to admit that Titanic remains my favorite movie ever. I'm also not ashamed that i'm a big fan of the song "My heart will go on." even after listening to it hundreds of times. Upon seeing this CD avaliable for less then three bucks (thank goodness for being able to buy used!), I just couldn't pass it up.

Well...you get what you pay for I guess.

If I had to sum up Return to Titanic, I would say "It's the leftovers that got cut out of the first musical score, and has music that isn't in the movie". This musical CD is, for me, a dissapointment through and through, though your opinion on it may vary.

Back to Titanic has a very heavy irish motif running through almost all the tracks. Pretty much all of them feature bagpipes and while nice and charming, it does wear thin on your nerves after a while, especially if you don't like bagpipes in the first place. But along with this irish theme, you'll notice something else: Many of the tracks aren't even from the movie. "Come Josephine", "Lament", "Jack Dawson's luck" and "A shore never reached" aren't even from the film. It is just me, or is it really irritating when you buy a movie music CD and don't get music from the film? Though to be fair, the music does parallel the themes from the film pretty well.

In addition to the irish motif and music that wasn't in the film, Back to Titanic has another interesting trait: It reuses a lot of the music from the first CD. The titanic suite and "The deep and endless sea" are long tracks made up of most of the non-sinking music from the first effort, patched together and from a new performance. Yes it's nice and all, but I really don't feel like listening to nineteen minutes of music that I've already heard before.

So, what is new music that WAS in the film? We've got five tracks. The first, "An Irish Party In Third Class" is the music that played during Jack and Rose's trip down to the third class dance. Fine if you don't mind heavy irish dancing music, but I personally don't care for it. Next up, we have "Alexander's Ragtime Band" which is most easily heard when Rose is recalling how she saw her life flash before her eyes (just before meeting Jack for the first time). Simple and pleasant, this makes for good old time background party music. I personally am neutral towards it. The (apparently) most praised track that's new is "A building panic" which covers the early stages of Titanic sinking. However, compared to the sinking pieces heard before, this seems pretty tame and low-key to me. Maybe i'm a fan of big disaster music, but this track diddn't move me either way. Has some nice moments, but it's personally not up to my taste.

Out of all the tracks on this CD, only two really stand out in my opinion. The first, "The portrait" is a simple piano suite that was played during...guess what? the scene where Jack draws Rose. It's simple yes, but Mr. Horner is quite good at the piano and manages to tell the Titanic theme very well. Simple, yet highly effective. The second track that deserves mention is "Nearer My God To Thee - I Salonisti". Remember that incredibly moving moment where the band plays it's final piece as the front half of the ship goes under? This is that song, and it's just as moving here as it was in the film (though I personally could do without the movie dialoge at the very end).

Aside from these five tracks, what else do we have? Well, we have a fairly boring alternate version of "Nearer my God to thee" that has no interest for me whatsoever. And we also have a new recut of "my heart will go on." I really do like the original version of this song, but other reviewers have talked about this paticular piece at length, so i'll add only this: Hopefully, the people at Sony have learned that you DONT stick movie dialoge into your big song numbers.

So...that's it. Five new movie pieces, only two of which hold my attention, four pieces of music that wern't in the movie that are to me, boring, an uninteresting recut of a popular song, an alternate and weaker version of "nearer my God to thee" and two long suites that re-use 98% of the music from the last CD.

Pffft.

Even with all this music, we STILL don't get the two best pieces of the film: The haunting opening title track, and the heartwrenching ending piece (one reviewer has said that the latter is in the first suite, but it diddn't sound like it to me). Some have commented that this CD is better then the first one, both overall and emotionally, but I honestly can't see how that's possible. The first music CD has the overwhelming majority of material from the film, and all of the best, most dramatic moments (save the two previously mentioned tracks). As a titanic fan, this CD is a dissapointment. If you must buy it, buy it used for less then five dollars.

If nothing else, this CD has inspired me to make my own CD of the music from the film...which does have the two best tracks that have yet to be released officialy.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful... for the most part..........2006-08-31

This soundtrack is wonderful because it has all of the music that the movie soundtrack didn't. In addition, these are all the songs I was looking for but could not find in the movie soundtrack, the songs that give the true "feelings" of Titanic. Also, James Horner is a magnificent artist and I suggest looking into his other soundtracks.

However, there is one downfall, which I don't know if theres a similar soundtrack that comes without it, but the voices of the characters are distracting to the music and I feel should not have been put in it. During most of the songs, characters such as Jack and Rose say some of their lines.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!
