Although Marcelo Álvarez started his professional career comparatively late, he rose up quickly--perhaps too quickly. On his first CD, Bel Canto, which featured Italian arias, he displayed a bright, lyrical voice of great sweetness, a fine high range with a ringing top, and admirable breath control. His second CD, devoted to the music of his fellow Argentinean Gardel, was even more impressive for its stylistic and idiomatic identification.

This is Álvarez's third CD in three years; unfortunately, it is not as successful. One reason is that the program includes too many slow arias, several taken from operas better known in their Italian version. In fact, the aria from Donizetti's La Favorita is also included on Álvarez's Italian disc. Another reason is that his voice sounds a bit frayed, tight, and harsh under stress, and the florid passages seem labored. However, it is still beautiful in the soft, lyrical pieces. Among the highlights are the two arias from Massenet's Manon--the first for its passion, the second for its floating mezza voce--and the arias from Gounod's Faust and Verdi's Don Carlo. The program seems to have been chosen for its display of high Cs (there is even one D-flat), and Álvarez exploits them to the hilt, letting them last as long as possible, whether indicated by the composer or not. His expressiveness is genuine, but often exaggerated, his diction almost unintelligible. The orchestra plays well and sounds lush; among the solos those for violin and viola d'amore stand out. --Edith Eisler

    5 out of 5 stars Marcelo Alvarez-French Arais.......2002-04-09

I bought this CD 2 months ago and I'd been listening to this CD almost everyday. This is a must have CD in anybody's collection. This CD is an excellent introduction to Opera for those who are not so fond of the Opera. I am not one of those people who will argue that Alvarez is the BEST opera singer ever, but this album is one of the BEST. Each track is sung with passion and meaning imbedded into the words, even though Mr. Alvarez is not a native France and not in excellent command of the french pronounciation. But Music itself is a Universal language. What matters here in his interpretation and passion in his voice in which he sang very intelligently. The range of the man is truly remarkable. If you are interested in giving some attention to this singer, then "The Bel Canto " CD is by far his BEST to date, so I heartily recommend it. Mr. Alvarez is one of the promising tenors of the 21st Century along with Ramon Vargas and his fellow Argetine the versatile musician, Jose Cura. The choices of songs for this album is ones that are non very well known, but you cannot deny the greatness of Alvarez's voice. Mr. Alvarez an opera singer with a sweetness that has not been heard since Carlo Bergonzi. Listening to Marcelo Alvarez brings beauty to opera. Whether loud or soft is not the point. His voice has a purity and gentle emotion that is spectacular.

4 out of 5 stars Very Satisfying, If A Bit Flawed.......2002-03-08

Marcelo Alvarez is an Argentine, and thus French is not his native language, and it shows. So a linguistic perfectionist will complain a bout a less than idiomatic pronunciation, which is true on this disc. But there have been a number of Spanish and Italian speaking singers who have performed in the French repertoire, and have been successful, even with less than perfect pronunciation. Alvarez is one of these. Amazon's editorial reviewer complained that the voice sounded "a bit frayed, tight and harsh" I differ. In the first aria, "Pourqoi me reveiller", he sounds like he hasn't "warmed up". I noted the same thing with the opening aria in his "Bel Canto" disc. A stressed, overused or tired voice first shows it at the "break" ( around high f), where the voice goes from the middle to the head register. There is no such evidence here. Another symptom is an inability to diminish volume (diminuendo) from loud to soft on a sustained tone. Alvarez executes these perfectly and repeatedly. My criticism is in the choice of selections, which is due more, I'll bet, to Sony than to the performer. Too many of the arias are more associated with the Italian versions of the operas than the French, and there are many gems from the French opera that would have sounded better on this disc. That aside, I think that Alvarez, along with Ramon Vargas, are our two top tenors today, and Alvarez delivers some fine interpretations here. I have enjoyed this disc, and I believe that almost anyone who enjoys a gifted tenor will too.

1 out of 5 stars Provincial at Best.......2002-02-14

Always looking for new talent and certainly aware of the reputation of Mr. Alvarez, I was extremely disappointed to find a colorless, unfocussed voice with virtually no innate musical sense, much less a familiarity with French operatic style. The voice is tight and wooden, with approaches to the high notes varyingly grunting and gnashing of teeth. Is this merely the result of a basically untrained natural talent succumbing to an international career? After hearing beautiful work from both Ramon Vargas and Juan Diego Florez, and acceptable singing from Roberto Alagna and Ben Heppner in the past few months, I must say that Sony has a talent search on their hands if they are to compete with RCA, Decca, DG and EMI.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnifique!!.......2002-02-01

Excellent! Superb! Alvarez's sophomore solo release is nothing short of stunning. Building upon the success of his debut album, Bel Canto, and banking on the critical acclaim he has received all over the world, Alvarez's melting tones lend incomparable beauty to arias from "Faust," "Guillaume Tell," and "Don Carlos" among others. This recording clearly demonstrates that his growing reputation as one of THE premier tenors of this generation is not exaggerated.

    Album Description

    The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12

The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." Fanfare

This may not be easy to get in the USA for very long.....don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.

Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

          Amazon.com essential recording

From the youthful bloom and impetuous swagger of Enrico Caruso's debut 1902 recordings to the darker, almost baritonal overtones typifying his final sessions before the acoustic horn, the singer's resplendent vocalism and generous performing style remain the archetype for Italian tenors. As a child of the late 19th century, Caruso was prone to embellish upon composers' texts, yet his passion, communicative power, and soaring musicality transcend time. The Italian sessions from 1902 to 1904 and Caruso's recordings with piano between 1904 and 1905, along with two later sides, receive conventional, unaltered transfers. The remaining material is restored via the controversial Soundstream computer process, which fleshes out the lower partials of the voice while compromising its overtones, relegating the orchestral accompaniment to a rumbling backdrop rather than contributing partner. Yet many will find the Soundstream transfers easier on the ear. Those who wish to acquire the complete Caruso in a single package at midprice should not hesitate to purchase this significant set. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars No - the deffect is NOT on EVERY set!!!.......2006-12-08

The deffect that some previous reviewers were so mad about did not happen to my set. After purchasing it for two years and listening to the disks every other day, they are still shiny and beautiful like new. You can't use the word "EVERY" so cavelierly, because you have not listened to EVERY set.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of Italian Tenor Singing-Get it.......2006-05-20

I have been collecting Caruso performance since 1960- of course they were on vinyl- I even had some 78's. I think the 78 and vinyl records produced a warmer tone, but it is a delight to have the Master's performances in one place. My vinyls are worn to shreds.

Except for the lighter and bel canto roles, Caruso is supreme in the Italian and some of the French repetoire. Last night I listened to the Quartet from Martha for the first time in many years. Caruso sings about a 20 second phrase beginning "Dormi
Pur" which had me in tears as it had in the past. The ease of Caruso cadenzas in "La donna e Mobile" and "Una Furtiva Lagrima" put most tenors with a 1/4 of Caruso's vocal weight and size to shame.

There are no American/Swedish or any other hyphenated Carusos. He was unique and I am a Bjoerling freak. I find it
odd that a previous reviwer mentioned Mario Lanza favorably with Caruso.

Lanza rarely performed on an opera stage. On recording his voice seems large but his singing is amateurish. He squeezes, forces, barks and croons. At times one can hear a pretty sound but I do not consider him a major opera singer.

Rudolf Bing's comment that people who heard Richard Tucker were just as lucky as those who heard Caruso is silly. Tucker was excellent but NOT Caruso.

Lauritz Melchior, in the heavy German repetoire and to my mind Otello, is as unique and uncomparable as Caruso is in the Italian and French repetoire.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING-All Original Releases Corrode Because of Dye.......2005-04-24

EVERYONE who bought the ORIGINAL multi-disc release has seen each disc become unplayable through corrosion because of a dye used to print the label side. BMG is well aware of this and has been inundated with demands for replacement.

This set is available in a subsequently released BUDGET compilation, also available through AMAZON. There are no manufacturing defects.

          5 out of 5 stars from a 13 year old kid.......2005-03-15

it is a great cd. when they say complete, they mean complete! 12 cds about 70mins each. comes with booklet with recording dates and matrix #s. in cardboardy-leather box. i did not have a probelem with red batwing labels making a clear film. the set is from the 70's but is the quality that great any way? contains private recordings.

4 out of 5 stars There are other, better options.......2004-05-17

I was surprised to see that this set was still available. These transfers were made in the late 1970's at the dawn of the digital era and were state of the art for that time. But in cleaning up the surface noise these old digital transfers seriously flatten out the sound of Caruso's voice.

I would suggest that people interested in Caruso check out the "complete" Caruso series on Naxos with new digital restorations by the great sound engineer/artist Ward Marston. On the Naxos CD's the voice is preserved in a much more natural and subtle sound while all of the other noises are eliminated as much as possible. It's much more satisfying and true to the original recordings than these old RCA transfers. If you're going to spend $130.00 you should have the best available. It's only fair to Caruso.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Tenors- about whom you have never heard.......2006-09-08

He was about 5' tall. He only sang in the US in New Orleans and he left about 30-40 recordings, hence his unknown status. His voice was huge, warm, flexible and exciting. I have never heard more full voiced higb Cs and D flats from a tenor. These are all acoustical recordings circa 1905 so there are no engineers tricks. His phrasing was artistic and he makes Tamagno sound horribly crude. Escalais' huge voice could sing pianissimo and meza voce as well as open up full throttle.

The piece from Robert le Diable is the first thing I heard him sing. I could not believe what I was hearing. After singing a magnificent High C he takes a magnificent trill and executes one of the cleanest and fastest runs I have ever heard. All this from a true DRAMATIC TENOR not a leggero tenor.

          A must buy!!!!!
