Had her music in phonograph format collection. Compare audio quality from CD and my record player showed very similiar which indicated high quality reproduction. Recomment to anyone whose interest in it.

5 out of 5 stars answering the Beatles.......2006-04-23

Back in the Sixties, Francoise Hardy (born in 1944) was France's answer to the wave of new stunning British popmusic.

Though her career lasted for many years afterwards, Francoise Hardy mainly lives on by this image. In particular outside France. The image also links us with the essence of Francoise's music: with her adequate voice she definitely captures the right mood.

It's all on this fine double-CD. Have yourself carried back to the exciting Sixties - Francoise Hardy still sounds as fresh as she did then.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable!.......2005-09-25

This double CD collection covers Francoise Hardy's recording period with Vogue Records 1962-1967. Hardy was only 18 years old when she recorded the songs for her first album in 1962; so it was very unusual that she was allowed to record so much of her own material; great thing she was, because she was ( still is ) a very accomplished songwriter. In fact most of her biggest were written or co-written by Hardy herself.

The song selections concentrate on her first 5 albums ( 1962-66 ) and contemporary singles and EP tracks. Her 6th much-acclaimed Vogue album "Ma Jeunesse Fout le Camp" is only represented by "Qui Peut Dire" and "Voila". Most surprisingly that her last Vogue original album ( in Frech language ) "Comment te Dire Adieu" is not represented at all.

Never the less, this is a great compilation featuring the vast majority of her best songs of the period - obviously some great songs had to be left out; simply because lack of space. I can't help mentioning just a few songs that are missing ( seek them out elsewhere!) . The 1964 EP-track "Jaloux" is one of my favourites, which I have not yet been able to find on a CD. The album tracks "Avant de tén Aller" and "Je Pensais" would have been great additions as well.

These early recordings from Hardy which founded her reputation as the greatest French international pop-star of the 1960's have stood the test of time, and sound remarkably appealing after all these years; where the output by many of her contemporary colleagues like Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Connie Francis or even Marianne Faithful ( her sixties recordings!) often sound pretty dated.

If you are not familiar with the early years of Francoise Hardy's career this collection would be the ideal place to start getting to know her. Outstanding songs like "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour", "Le Maison Ou Jaí Grandi", "Ce Petit Coeur" or "Rendezvous Automne" are more than likely to hit you - actually most of these songs are!

The 16 pages booklet features some nice pictures and a short biography, but only sparse information about the songs themselves; where they were first released etc. Personally I would have loved to have a little more information about the recordings, circumstances around them etc.

Still, until the 4 CD box featuring her complete Vogue recordings is available again, this CD is indispensable!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful French pop music.......2004-02-28

What can I say about this album. It's stunning, it's elegant and it's really a joy to listen to ( you probably thought for a minute there I was talking about her and not her music!)!

You have a fascinating little biography from Bob Stanley on her who speaks of her as a fan of her music and well what more can I say really. You need to hear this album and I mean that

Oh I should mention one thing is that I'm glad that these songs are all sung in French. It gives the songs a dimension of sensuality which I don't find in many English/American singers

5 out of 5 stars French pop singer of the sixties and seventies.......2004-01-17

Some say that Francoise recorded her best music after she left Vogue in 1967, but this compilation covering her early music from 1962 to 1967 is of a consistently high quality with presentation to match. Regardless of the quality of her later music, the music here is what she is best remembered for. Francoise wrote most of her own material. Her voice had a limited range but Francoise knew that and wrote her songs accordingly and any lack of range was compensated by quality. She recorded English versions of some of her songs but none of those are included here. All fifty songs here are in French. Because I don't know any French, I don't understand the words but when music is this good, it's worth hearing anyway.

Francoise was clearly influenced by many different styles. Folk-pop is perhaps the main style but you will also hear elements of rock'n'roll, R+B and country here and there, as well as the influences of her own French heritage. The set opens with her debut hit, Tous les garcons et les filles, which sold over two million copes in France. In those days, France did not bother much with singles or albums - records were four-track EP's. Subsequent EP's all did well without matching the success of her debut. In 1964, Francoise moved to London and was rewarded with a UK top twenty hit - All over the world - here in its French version as Danse le monde entire, which opens the second CD. The Seekers also recorded the song and I wonder how big a hit it would have been if their version had been released as a single instead of Francoise's.

In the sixties, Francoise spent some time socializing with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. While her music is not as important as theirs, it has a certain Gallic charm all of its own.

The names on this tribute testify to the extraordinarily wide appeal of the Italian film composer Ennio Morricone: not many people could get Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Quincy Jones, Renée Fleming, and Metallica on one disc. And while the artists come from very diverse genres, the album holds together well. Things start off on a syrupy note with Dion's "I Knew I Loved You," a ballad from 1984's Once Upon a Time in America (to which Alan and Marilyn Bergman added lyrics in 2006). But fortunately the CD quickly recovers and goes on to survey most of Morricone's styles, from the dissonance of his spaghetti Western scores to his mod period to his lush orchestral vistas. Metallica goes all out with guitars blazing on "Ecstasy of Gold," a track they've used as a concert intro for years, while Brazil's Daniela Mercury and Eumir Deodato breeze through "Conmigo," and the French-British combo Vanessa and the O's resuscitate the pure '60s pop of "Je Changerai d'Avis," once performed by Françoise Hardy. As for ballads, listen for soprano Renée Fleming, who surpasses her previous pop-crossover attempts on the fragile "Sail Away." Morricone himself couldn't stay away: he wrote interstitial music to create seamless transitions between the tracks, and conducts three instrumental cues. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This will DELIGHT Morricone fans!.......2007-06-12

Not sure what there is not to love about this disc. The interpretations are unique, sometimes quirky and always interesting; the recording is gorgeous; and Morricone's segues, which he composed and recorded, are very cool and show that much thought and creativity went into the overall production. (Only complaint is the absence of translations for the foreign-language tracks.) After reading some of these reviews, I had doubts about making the purchase. Now I'm so grateful that I did! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THE GREATEST FILM COMPOSERS OF OUR TIME.......2007-05-27

I am a "die hard" Ennio Morricone fan and have been since 1968, so I can't understand for the life of me why the other reviews for this disk are so negative about this absolutely beautiful album!

I was thrilled to see Ennio finally receive an Academy Award this year! He deserved to receive many Academy Awards over the past 40 years for all his magnificent works. Next to Elmer Bernstein, I consider him my favorite film composer. Many of the selections on this album I had never heard before. Metallica playing "The Ecstacy of Gold" is absolutely reiveting! Andrea Bocelli is a perfect fit to sing Ennio's songs. Incidentally, Mr. Bocelli also sings two of Ennio's otherwise unknown songs on one of his older albums. Unknown to us in the USA only because Ennio has chosen to focus his life's work on mostly Italian film scores.

I only wish his scores were more accessable to us living outside of Italy. I have much of his film music, but it's still very hard to find. I truly feel that the genius of Ennio's music will not fully be appreciated until after he is gone from us.

So to anyone who really wants to know what a modern film score genius sounds like...BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

4 out of 5 stars We all love ennio morricone.......2007-04-04

a very diverse and interesting collection of hybrid pieces based upon the work of morricone. my only complaint was that the invited artists were not highlighted enough in the pieces. otherwise, i would given this a 5. I especially liked the european flavor of many of the pieces.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed in Ennio Marricone's Latest.......2007-03-31

This CD was a real disappointment. It was contrived by using famous names to sing songs that should have been orchestred pieces. Yo-Yo-Ma-Plays-Ennio-Morricone was superb and I had expected some of the same quality which is not there.

2 out of 5 stars This will disappoint die-hard Morricone fans.......2007-03-29

Not that I'm a total die-hard fan, but I spent several years collecting the most obscure Morricone soundtracks I could find. And I just saw him perform at the United Nations and Radio City Music Hall in February 2007. Initially, I had high hopes for this CD. Those hopes didn't last much into the first listen...

This tribute album is cover versions of only (arguably) his most popular songs. The covers on this album pale, in general, to the originals. Some are just plain emotionless. Celine Dion and Metallica in particular manage to suck the life out of Morricone's originals. As cover versions, they're vulgar. But that's part and parcel of the Morricone catalog; in over 400 soundtracks, you will find as much beauty as you will vulgarity. In that respect, this CD might still represent his body of work even if it doesn't translate it very well. There is some good, some bad, and some just ugly.

We may all love Morricone, but we do not all love to hear his work treated the way some of these artists chose to treat it. If you're like me, you'll prefer to spend your money on Morricone's original works (though a few do appear on this CD). I recommend "Crime and Dissonance", a compilation of Morricone music curated by Mike Patton, released on Patton's Ipecac label.

5 out of 5 stars Francoise Hardy Revisited.......2006-11-10

In the early 60's I was introduced to Hardy's music while attached to the U.S.S. Enterprise CVA(N)65 by a fellow shipmate. We enjoyed her style and then life took over. Some forty years passed and I thought of her lovely voice. I purchased three of her CD's and her music still is enjoyed. The three CD's I purchased take her early years and one of the three takes her through the 60's to the 2000's. This CD and any other one might wish to purchase is worth every dollar. One other note before the final period, "You don't have to speak french to enjoy this melodious French songstress. (On this particular CD she does some in English.......)

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Compilation of Hardy's Early Years!.......2005-12-14

Though this is obviously a "cheapo" release with very sparse information about the tracks and the artist, it is actually a pretty well compiled CD of some of Hardy's best early recordings.

Containing most her of biggest hits like "Ce Petite Coeur", "Tous les Garcons et les Filles", "La Maison ou Jái Grandi" and her only British top 20 hit-single "All Over the World", the CD gives a fine introduction to the most melodic and catchy side of Hardy.

A few harder to find tracks have also been included, among those English versions of some of her biggest hits in France.

For those who are not familar with Hardy's Vogue recordings or who just like intelligent 1960's pop, this CD is highly recommended.

If you want more of the same there is double CD called "The Vogue Years" covering her 1962-67 period brilliantly.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant 60s French pop.......2003-11-29

Ah these are the sort of songs you'll probably hear at some holiday hotel in France. You can't help but hum along to the tune because you wouldn't really know what the lyrics are. At least that's the feeling I get from them. But seriously, these songs are beautiful in there simplicity and while 22 songs might stretch some people's patience - they are all welcome additions. I don't want to seem like a biased fan because this is the only CD I have of Francoise Hardy but I would be interested in getting some of her records. I just a need a few more records before I get a good opinion. This, as it is, is a good start for anyone interested in French pop from the 60s. Only thing I would have wished for is that they didn't include English versions of songs that were sung here in French. Sure they're still nice but I prefer the sensuality of the French language

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album! Well worth it!.......1999-09-24

Françoise Hardy has to be one of the coolest singers around! What is further impressive is that she has been doing it for over 35 years. "Partir quand meme" has to be one of the prettiest recordings ever!

4 out of 5 stars Romantic reverie.......2007-02-25

Even though this album is a little sad, it's great to hear a mature Francoise Hardy in duet with old friends. Some of the songs are just beautiful, while some are very sad and perhaps thought provoking. As a fan of Francoise Hardy in her youth, I am thrilled to have this CD. AND it gives me a reason to brush up on some of my French vocabulary!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb and timeless.......2004-08-06

I still cannot believe how amazing this CD is - I heard Francoise Hardy's voice several years ago after a friend made a tape, and I decided to try some of her music on my own. I'm glad I picked this CD because it is just one of the most beautiful, romantic, and sublime collections of music I have ever heard. Her voice is melancholy, but not cloying, the music (outside of the lighthearted "e'ttonez-moi,benoit...! and playful, but not vapid, "comment te deire adieu?") is incredibly compelling and moving on every track. "ou' va la chance?" actually gives me the chills at certain points. Her cover of Leonard Cohen's impossibly lovely "Suzanne" is very effective. Most Americans don't know Francoise Hardy, but I'm glad I do. After hearing this CD, I know I want more.

4 out of 5 stars Comment te Dire Adieu - Review.......2003-02-20

This is an excellent album. Francoise Hardy specialises in the autumnal, and a couple of numbers apart (the jazzy 'Etonnez-Moi Benoit...' and the sublime camp-cool opener 'Comment te Dire Adieu') the mood is reflective and often melancholy - without lapsing into dullness. Fine examples of Hardy's own songwriting such as 'Les Etoiles et Le Mer' and 'A Quoi Ca sert?' (with proto-Nymanesque intrumental passage in the middle) keep fitting company with covers of Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne', Gainsbourg's 'L'anamour' (better than his own version, I feel), subdued Brazilian piece 'Mesange' and a pleasant French version of 'Lonesome Town'.

Highlights for me are: the title track itself, in which Hardy's breathy detached voice drifts over a flamboyant orchestral tune and a latin beat; the wistful closing number 'Les Etoiles et Le mer'; and the gorgeous 'Ou Va La Chance?', a glorious weepy which has the sweetest, loneliest music and voice, without ever quite becoming sacharine.

Never less than good, this is record worth playing all the way through, and that makes it a rarity for me. It's a well structured, charming, and sometimes moving, artefact. Recommended for FH fans and also simply fans of good pop songs.

4 out of 5 stars FRANCOISE, THE GIRL MOST GUY WOULD LIKE AS SISTER.......2000-12-03

FRANCOISE'S first VIRGIN album has survived rather well, even if it only goes 30 minutes. Two GAINSBOURG classics:the title track and L'ANAMOUR;ETONNEZ MOI BENOIT from the pen of writer PATRICK MODIANO;a BRASSENS song that was inspired by poet LOUIS ARAGON ,and a few other interestings songs. The importance here ,is that FRANCOISE is more willing to orchestrate her songs with different arrangers, and it works well.Actually, she had started doing it in the previous album MA JEUNESSE FOUT LE CAMP

4 out of 5 stars The sweetest voice for a great repertoire.......2000-07-13

In this album Hardy's velvety voice ranges over a wide variety of styles. The album begins with a fun, danceable pop song in pure late sixties style, "Comment te dire adieu". Afterwards, Hardy veers to slower songs, making beautiful renditions of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne", Georges Brassens' classic "Il n'y a pas d'amour heureux" (A mas-ter-piece, with incredible piano arrangements) and Jobim's bossa nova "Sabiá" (in French "Le mésange"), as well as singing a couple of very sweet own compositions, "A quoi ça sert?" and "La mer, les étoiles et le vent", which demonstrate her talent as a songwriter. Towards the end of the album she includes a lively French jazz tune, "Etonnez-moi, Benoît", which stands as an oddity, but is quite fun. Recommended for all lovers of sixties stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, sensual, passionate, and timeless ..........1999-01-10

I purchased this CD on the recomendation of a friend, and have deemed it one of my personal foreign favorites. Overall, the album is very strong. Francoise Hardy's voice is unearthly and the musical arrangements are fantastic. I would say the album is influenced by a unique combination of Serge Gainsbourg, early American country, and '60s folk music. Her style is tireless, and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates the French sound.

this would have to be one of the most beautiful albums i've heard. a glorious mix of breathy french vocals from francoise combined with gorgeous brazilian guitar from tuca. gentle from start to its brilliant ending, this album never strays from its dreamy tempo yet is full of surprises. sensual, romantic, haunting and at times melancholic this album is truly a wonderful masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Ca me dit quelque chose.......2003-08-19

There are really only two kinds of great albums in this world. The first is catchy, up front, and strikes a chord with the listener from the minute it spins. The second is albums like this - a quieter, less-assuming, almost experimental opus that grows better and more interesting every time you hear it. La Question is Françoise Hardy's 1971 "departure album" in that, for the first time in her career, she sang the type of deep, pensive, and even off-kilter ballads that had no immediate intent on commercial value so much as artistic merit. The instrumentation is sparse with guitarist and friend Tuca as her main accompaniment in addition to bass, the occasional strings, and keyboards. The only audible percussion occurs during the opening track "Viens," an appropriate attention grabber welcoming the listener to the chanteuse's personal journey, and also on the closer, the wound down, spoken-lyric groove called "Reve." In between it's mainly Tuca's flamenco style string plucking that provides the rhythmic jolt so delicately balanced by Françoise's lovely, reverb-induced voice. The title track, which follows its more rushed and immediate opener, sets the real pace for the album. It's a piano ballad replete with hushed, melancholy vocals as Françoise ponders one of her favorite themes: the pain of solitude and love lost. This theme is picked up again in "Oui Je Dis Adieu," a song whose sentiment aches as Françoise's vocal phrasings are drawn out like an extended sigh. The orchestration and Tuca's guitar punctuate the occasional silence between her words. Other album highlights include the haunting western ballad, "Si Mi Caballero," and "Bati Mon Nid," a more upbeat song (though essentially about a bird waiting for its partner) complete with a la la la refrain, standup bass, and a whimsical tone that placed it among Beck's top 10 during a recent DJ session. And because of the minimalist use of recording tracks and overdubs, what is laid down has a production quality so fresh and clear that listening to it with headphones 32 years later still gives you the impression you're in the studio as it's happening. This is simply a beautiful, understated album that sets an indescribable mood - something to do with twilight, fog, and contemplation.

4 out of 5 stars lullabies.......2000-10-26

Francoise Hardy distinguished herself in the sixties as the first French woman to record songs which she penned. Previously, the songs had been written and arranged by a producer. This collection from 1971 is quiet, tender accoustic music. MEME SOUS LA PLUE and BATI MON NID present pleasant, endearing melodies. The title cut, CHANSON D'O and LE MARTIEN add breathy vocals of a chanteuse to a dreamy, languid pace. LE MARTIEN is most interesting to me for its ascending theme. Hardy and Tuca, a Brazilian guitarist who helps with production, add variety to the selection by introducing different instruments, strings, flutes etc.. VIENS is exciting for its latin influence, and the happy tune whistled as the introduction to SI MI CABALLERO add to the bewitching allure. If you are interested in quiet, accoustic vocal music or in the music of one of France' greatest songwriters, this CD will interest you.

5 out of 5 stars An oneiric album.......2000-06-21

This collaboration with Brazilian musician Tuca is just magnificent. It is a slower album than usual, with no pop/rock numbers, just ballads - delectable, dreamy, gossamer ballads. In some of the songs, as "Chanson d'O", Hardy just scats, purrs, sighs, whispers softly in a bewitching way that drives you to a dream world. The arrangements, based on an accousting guitar and a string orchestra which appears now and then, are extraordinary and very imaginative. In some ways, this album seems to me like the soundtrack of one of those melancholic "nouvelle vague" movies from the time. Very nice and soooooothing.

3 out of 5 stars Her Most Main-stream Album!.......2005-10-14

Francoise Hardy's sixth Vogue album "Ma Jeunesse fout le camp", originally released in 1967, may well be her least interesting 1960's release. Not that it's a bad album; her well-known appealing melancholy is all over it. It can be hard though, to distinguish several tracks from each other, and quite a few tracks suffer from too much orchestration; all in all making it her most main-stream pop-album.

Hardy only wrote about half of the songs, and in most cases her own songs stand out. Though the title track is quite nice, the first track that really woke me up was "Qui Peut Dire" which is the first track that allows electric guitar and drums to come forward; written by Hardy and the only track produced by her husband Jacques Dutronc. Another stand-out is her own "Mais il y a des soirs", in spite of quite heavy strings. "Voila" is another memorable track; a melody and an arrangement that would have fitted the early Dusty Springfield perfectly.

A good album; no more.

5 out of 5 stars NUMBER 6 ORIGINAL IN FRENCH.......2004-02-07

Even if i prefer the previous opus of 1966,i also like this one that includes electric guitar backgrounds on a few tunes.FRANCOISE's romantism is still ever present throughout ,and she does sound more pop on this one without falling on the rock banana.I have never seen a more beautiful album cover.Does she look fabulous at 23 ? MA JEUNESSE FOUT LE CAMP and VOILA were the hits, but for me LA FIN DE L'ÉTÉ is the absolute clinger. It seems that that tune resumes FRANCOISE's life up to that time.

5 out of 5 stars Well i'll be damned.......2003-09-11

Let's just say that if you're into Dusty Springfield, Scott Walker, Arthur Lee & Love, Shangri-Las or the like and you are unfamiliar with Francoise Hardy...check this out immediately. The orchestra stabbed me, the guitars electrocuted me and Francoise Hardys singing kicked... Literally.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth.......2001-05-06

This album is a must-have for any fan of 60s French pop. Avoiding some of the disingenuous disposability of her earlier "yeh-yeh" era songs and the occasionally maudlin element of her later work, "Ma Jeunesse" is an impressively even album. It captures that wonderful time in French music where the technical strengths of the chanson tradition were able to blend with the best influences in mainstream pop in the UK and US to produce something uniquely of its time. Although many of the songs are tinged with a sense of loss, the sobriety is lifted throughout by the strong melodies, written by Hardy herself and a rich variety of collaborators. The highlight is "Des Ronds Dans L'Eau" from the film "Vivre Pour Vivre", a cascading and haunting tune, beautifully sung by Hardy. Like all great albums, "Ma Jeunesse" never rests on its laurels and continues to twist and turn all the way through to to the wistful "C'etait Charmant". I would recommend it both to aficionados and starters in French pop. Sad though that the genre's period of true greatness was so shortlived.

5 out of 5 stars "Qui Peut Dire" Indeed!.......2000-07-08

This album is worth the price for the hard-to-find "Qui Peut Dire," one of the great rock and roll recordings of all time, in any language, in any country, by any artist. Also check out the fine cover version of the song by Outrageous Cherry (also available at Amazon).

More than half of this chronological Greatest Hits collection is devoted to Hardy's hits of the early-mid 60s. It then shifts abruptly to the 80s, ignoring Hardy's enormous output from the late 60s to mid-70s; naturally, the change in style is also abrupt. Although there can't be much argument with the chosen tracks, the cd running time could easily have incorporated several more songs more fairly representative of a career overview. In short, an unsatisfactory compilation that also neglects to include any liner notes.

A mile stone album
Reviewer: Rodney Gavin Bullock from Winchester, Hampshire United Kingdom
This is a key album in the output of this great chanteuse. Her early songs were straightforward in meaning, though emotionally often very powerful. 'Message Personnel' (1973) represents a big advance in sophistication and the words have become more ambiguous and more subtle. Even if you have the words on paper, school boy French and a large dictionary will often not get you very far. Never mind, more than any other singer I know, she conveys the emotions purely with her uniquely beautiful voice, a voice laden with tenderness, humanity and intelligence.
The songs on this disc are all of the highest quality, with a mixture of the lyrical and more rhythmic. 'Premiere recontre' is by Michel Berger and his collaboration on this album seems to suit Françoise' style down to the ground. The orchestration is inventive and adds considerably to the impact of the songs. I will mention two songs in a little more detail. 'Beuceuse' (Cradle Song) is about a woman watching her sleeping lover - his breathing, sighs and stillness. She imagines his dreams. But at the end she recognises that things will be the same tomorrow, implying things are not too good when he is awake. This is set to music of touching tenderness and simplicity. The masterpiece on the disc is the last, 'Message Personnel'(Hardy, Berger). In my view it is one of the greatest love songs of all time, with an almost overwhelming emotional impact. It starts with her talking to her lover, apparently on the telephone but is she? Is it in her head? She wants to say loving things to him but she cannot. Why? What has happened? We do not know. The talking ends and she sings gently, building to an impassioned climax. I would buy the CD for this alone.

5 out of 5 stars MESSAGE PERSONNEL.......2003-04-13

Message personnel is a truly beautiful albumn. It captures all the hauntingly beautiful, romantic, agonising heartbreak, of those who are in love, spiralling, deeply, out of control... It is hauntingly, beautifully sad. The title track, Message Personnel, seems to be based on someone who is deeply in love with someone, yet cannot bring themselves to contact them. I think it was based around a film.
Berceuse, a lullabye for lovers together. Many more tracks, one about a lovely garden, one track comes better than another, it simply blew me away. My version is on vinyl, and I play it often.
