Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars worth money.......2007-05-24

this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30

If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

5 out of 5 stars Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

5 out of 5 stars What ??.......2006-12-10

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

1 out of 5 stars Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07

Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!

3 out of 5 stars A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-12-20

Trevor Rabin's score was what made Deep Blue Sea. The standout tracks are definately 'track 3' Journey, and 'track 9' Anarchy which are the main action cues. Also 'track 4' and 'track 7' are great as they build up a suspensful atmosphere to a striking finale. The soundtrack is a worthy buy even if it runs for little over 30 minutes and doesn't include some of the best score pieces in the movie: the elevator sequence and the finale.

3 out of 5 stars Some wonderful tracks, but too short.......2004-09-29

This CD is worth getting for the first two tracks, which feature perhaps the richest and most powerful theme Rabin has ever composed.

Unfortunately, there just isn't enough score on the CD - at less than 30 minutes it's over before you know it!

4 out of 5 stars "Deep Blue Sea rocks the bones".......2004-08-20

Deep Blue Sea was one of my most entertaining movies. Trevor Rabin's movie score was an even hit on the head for me. If you didn't already know, Trevor Rabin was a part of the 80's group, Yes! Since branching out on his own, he has kept himself busy with movie score projects like Armageddon, Deep Blue Sea and Bad Boys II to name a few. When the movie and its accompanying soundtrack was released in 1999, I wasn't even aware that Varese Sarabande had released the movie's score album too.
Back to the review at hand, kudos goes to Rabin for this score album. If you have seen the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. The only problem that I found with this was that the song pieces were too short, and that it was missing the "Deep Blue Sea Montage" from the soundtrack.
Overall, and in conclusion, two thumbs up for Trevor Rabin and for his musical contribution to Deep Blue Sea. If you don't have this, what are you waiting for? Go get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Rabin Scores Again.......2004-04-25

Well, Rabin's Armageddon was stunning, but this blows even that out of the water! It gives the feeling that something is out there, coming right for you, and the only way to stop it is to kill it. But when it arrives, look out. It's going to get right in your face and rip you to pieces just because it can!! The movie kicks major butt, but without Rabin's contribution in the area of audio appeal, it would've been in hot water for sure. Don't miss this one for anything

4 out of 5 stars Great sound track.......2003-05-27

My daughter and I love this sound track. Sometimes it seems that the music has been cut short. Like they really could have gotten so much more out of a certain theme, but overall well done. This review refers to the original soundtrack score.

5 out of 5 stars Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13

McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."

5 out of 5 stars Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12

If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.

5 out of 5 stars Simply exquisite!.......2007-05-06

Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!

The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.

3 out of 5 stars Love and frustration.......2007-03-08

This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??

Sincerely,
Lyndall

Samuel L. Jackson is a businessman who invests a large chunk of cash into a cure for brain disease. The medical biologist in charge of the program (Saffron Burrows) finds a way to better harvest the necessary enzymes. Except it's done in sharks, and the side effect makes the sharks too smart for their own good. They soon break free of their controlled habitat and head for the open waters, where they endanger the lives of all they encounter. The soundtrack for this misadventure is solid hip hop led by L.L. Cool J, who contributes two cuts and wrote and produced Simone Starks' "Burn Baby Burn." Chantel Jones performs an update of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now." Cormega featuring Carl Thomas's "Mega's on His Own" is an ominous highlight, incorporating the Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" in its ambient sweep. Trevor Rabin sums things up with "Deep Blue Sea Montage," an orchestral score you might expect to hear when being chased by an angry shark. --Rob O'Connor

But other than LL's tracks, there really isnt any other ones that stand out as "awesome" songs. It isnt a terrible album, however, and is worth a listen, especially if you like some of the other artists on the CD. I was a tad disappoined though.

4 out of 5 stars "LL Cool J with another slamming project".......2004-08-20

"Deep Blue Sea-Music From the Motion Picture" was a slamming soundtrack (in my opinion). For those of you that don't know, LL Cool J not only starred in the movie, but he was the movie's music consultant for the soundtrack. He also executive produced and supervised the Deep Blue Sea soundtrack under his company, Rock The Bells Records Entertainment, sister label of Island Def Jam Records.
All of the artists that were featured represented with their own blend of hip-hop/R&B, especially with a couple of previously released songs (Divine's "Good and Plenty", Bass Odyssey's "Remote Control Soul", and Deetah's updated remake of Madonna's "El Paraiso Rico"). Veteran artists like Hi-C and DJ Quik (with some background vocals from James DeBarge) strikes it rich with "Dollar Bill" and Cormega with Carl Thomas delivers the hit, "Mega's On His Own", sampled with the Temptations' "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". Trevor Rabin's "Deep Blue Sea Montage" helped to end the CD on a orchestral and hauntingly beautiful note. LL Cool J laid down some pretty hot tracks like "Deep Bluest (Shark's Fin)" and "Say What" to smooth it all out. New artists like Simone Starks (Burn Baby Burn), F.A.T.E. (Just Because), Chantel Jones (with her remake of Johnny Nash's hit, I Can See Clearly Now), Smokeman (Smokeman), Natice (I Found Another Man featuring raps by Simone Starks) and Amyth (LL Cool J's R&B group with Come Home With Me) helped to make this project very worthwhile to listen to.
In conclusion, the CD is pretty good. LL should have put Trevor Rabin's song on the score album, but he really made some good music. Rock The Bells and LL Cool J is on point. Rock on!

5 out of 5 stars One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15

no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars High Psychedelic Take on Surf Music.......2005-04-20

Pollo is a surf band, but they're a San Francisco surf band. They don't play '50s-flavored surf rock; they play high psychedelic surf rock, circa 1967-68. You'll hear elements of the Mermen's lushness, Quicksilver Messenger Service's crystalline double-lead-guitar counterpoint, and Neil Young's rich fuzz tone.

At their best, Pollo is a superb live band. And this is a finely crafted album, as are their others (Live in Japan Town, Golden State, and The Ocean Is Not for Cowards).

Pollo are also genuinely nice guys, turning up as escorts and translators when visiting surf-rock colleagues like Japan's Surf Coasters tour California.

    5 out of 5 stars Instrumental Gods.......2004-04-15

There's so much richness to the sound of this album which has a great intensity.

You know when a song puts you right there in the place it descirbes? That is what Devil's Slide does.

This is a great instumental album which should not be overlooked.

    5 out of 5 stars It's High tide.......2004-04-15

This is an excellent album that show off Pollo Del Mar muscial talent.

There are new tracks like Consuela's Revenge which take us to the cutting edge of Surf genre music. The standards like Moon Over Marin are played exceptionally well.

Take a chance on this great local San Francisco band that pulls it together with a fantastic bass line and an exceptional drumline.

5 out of 5 stars On the cutting edge of surf music.......2004-04-15

What an excellent CD to add to your surf music collection.

Their original tunes take surf to an all time new high tide!

I had the oppurtunity to see them live and they are excellent preformers that raise the standard!

We are not worthy Pollo Del Mar!

1 out of 5 stars Canned chicken of the sea.......2003-12-16

Right out of a can. They hail from San Francisco, and so many other surf bands have come out of there that are genuinely original and exciting. The Mermen, Aqua Velvets, or the Berserkers immediately come to mind. Pollo is earnest, they seem to try hard, but their interpretation of surf music isn't very moving. Their version of Apache seems to be intended for the geriatric set. They've been around for quite a few years, but seem little known outside of a small circle of friends in the Bay area. I've seen them play, and they have a lot of fun, but the audience didn't seem very involved. One of the other acts that played that day, Slacktone, had the audience positively electrified, rivited. People came running to hear Slacktone play. I noticed that during the Pollo del Mar set, people tended to wander away. Even when they play cover songs the energy fails to rise to the level of the originals. I notice that Phil Dirt gives them high ratings at his web site, but he is a close personal friend of theirs. Their brand of surf music is strictly throw away, generic, nothing noteworthy or memorable.
