FROM 1936 TO 1958.......2001-09-21

Without a doubt,this is the best overview of CHARLES TRENET on a single cd.It collects all his best songs,and you'll notice that from QUE RESTE-IL DE NOS AMOURS on,there is a new nostalgic approach in his songs.In his early years 1936-1943 CHARLES is a young man ,who having been in contact with surrealists figures ,is deeply influenced by this group.When the war arrives,the drama being more natural,it seems to inspire him to write melancolic songs,and those i think are his most fondly remembered today.I really like COIN DE RUE ,who symbolizes the world of his youth from a personnal experience,and also LE JARDIN EXTRAORDINAIRE which allows CHARLES to display his fantasy.These are the two aspects of CHARLES TRENET.Anyone with an interest in FRENCH music should buy this cd.

Happy go lucky reminder of pre-war Paris.......2001-01-04

This is a delightful album that belongs in the collection of anyone who imagines Paris before World War II, or who thrills at the smile of Maurice Chevalier. It is worth it just to hear Trenet's recording of "Boum." If you bought Adam Gopnick's book, "Paris to the Moon" you will particularly enjoy this album. Play this on a Saturday afternoon during a wine-filled lunch.

A fantastic anthology for a man whose career spans decades.......1999-12-17

This is one of my favorite albums in my collection of over 1500 titles. The songs in this collection are immediately entertaining and infectious. Charles Trenet possesses a lightheartedness and joi de vivre that is downright contagious and evident on the majority of songs selected for this anthology.

Anyway, if you're looking to get this for a friend, do yourself and your friend a favor and get two copies or else you'll be fighting over it in no-time.

Essential compilation.......2005-10-12

This compilation of the Cape Verdean legend contains her best work of the years 1988 to 2001. She performs two distinctive styles of song. The Morna is a type of lament derived from the Portuguese Fado, often based on the longing of emigrants for their homeland. The Coladera is a rhythmic, dance-oriented style that is more uptempo than the morna. By the way, Amalia Rodriguez is great Fado singer whose work is well worth investigating.

With her deeply soulful voice Cesaria is a mistress of both Cabo Verdean styles as demonstrated on unforgettable songs like Esperanca Irisada, Amor Di Mundo, Sodade, Vida Tem Um So Vida, Mar Azul and Crepuscular Solidao. This album contains songs in both Portuguese and the Cabo Verde Creole and is a joy to listen to. Evora is one of those World Music greats that manages to stay true to her roots whilst appealing to a wider audience.

I fell in love with his voice 2001.......2003-11-21

I was enjoying a good french dinner in Carcassonne late 2001 when I heard relaxing french soft music in the background.I immediately "fell in love" with the singer's voice. As I couldn't recognise the singer, I asked the staff and went to a shop already the next day to buy the CD. Johnny Hallyday has in fact been known to me since many years, but more as a Rock & Roll artist. This experience with "Anthologie 1985-97" was so fascinating, so he is now one of my favourites and I will always look for the new releases. He is very special and if you like me like to relax to ballads/soft music with a french touch from his deep caring voice, get this CD to your collection.

Through these years, JOHNNY HALLYDAY regained his crown as the king of rock in FRANCE.But JOHNNY is not only a rocker;he can tackle ballads like few singers;he puts his soul to them.This anthology covers these years very well starting with the album ROCK'N'ROLL ATTITUDE written by the late MICHEL BERGER;GANG written by J-J.GOLDMAN(the guy who wrote CELINE DION's FRENCH albums)and CADILLAC written by ETIENNE RODA-GIL.Most of the songs are from those three albums.LAURA is actually JOHNNY'S daughter he had with actress NATHALIE BAYE.JOHNNY'S reputation has a live performer might be the reason of his stardom but this compilation shows he has good songs to deliver.

my favorite cd.......2002-11-07

Wow! There is so much energy and life in this music! La Bottine Souriante has my vote for the best group in the world. The earthy beat and humerous lyrics belie the wonderful technical mastery of the music. I've only just discovered these guys so I can't tell you how great they are on stage or which of their CDs is best, but I know that anyone who loves good toe-tapping, foot-stomping, sing-along, big-smile music will be hooked by this CD. Enjoy!

Late '60s Euphoria.......2006-07-12

As a guitar player, I must admit that the late 60s (66-69) were holly grale for any rock'n roll heavy fan. Hallyday recorded some of his most fantastic stuff at that time, though personal issues that led him twice at least to suicide attempts...
Some cover versions, lots of originals too, but pure hard rock delirium anyhow. "A tout casser" (68) is one of the greatest gem of that time, pure psychedelic hard rock, with Jimmy Page on electric guitars, as well as "Né dans la rue" or "Voyage au pays des vivants" (hear the live version to know what it is all about...)

Petula pays respect to French musical heritage.......2002-10-06

At the time these tracks were recorded in 1964, the French market was still mostly about singles and four-song EP's. Albums were a rarity and double albums were virtually unheard of. So, it was a very brave move for Petula to record a double album of new material, and is a reflection of her enormous popularity in France at the time - this was before Downtown caused Petula to switch her attention to America.

Unlike Petula's other French albums, which drew on a variety of sources, including songs she wrote or co-wrote in French as well as translations of British and American songs, the Hello Paris double album was, as far as I can tell, exclusively French. This point is emphasised by the album title, the beautiful cover picture of Petula in Paris (it's intersting to note that the best Petula album covers are nearly all French), and several pictures inside showing Petula in various Paris settings.

The songs themselvers were written by some of France's finest songwriters. There's no evidence here of the rock'n'roll with which Petula established herself in France - these are mostly romantic ballads. Three were written or co-written by Charles Trenet, including La mer, which was translated into English as Beyond the sea, in which form it was a massive hit for Bobby Darin.

Le jour ou la pluie viendra (the only Gilbert Becaud song here) was translated as The day the rains came and gave Jane Morgan a British #1 (she never had another British hit) and a top forty American hit.

Two other songs which became famous after translation are Les feuilles mortes (Autumn leaves), which remains popular, and Cerisier rose et pommier blanc (Cherry pink and apple blossom white), which is rarely heard these days. There's also a lovely cover of Edith Piaf's La vie en rose.

Despite these covers, this collection contains less material that will be familiar to British and American ears than any of the other French releases. However, true Petula fans will still enjoy this.

Petula takes rock'n'roll to France.......2002-11-03

Petula recorded these tracks in 1961 and 1962, a period when she was red-hot in France. Although this is regarded as her rock'n'roll period, there is a good sprinkling of ballads for those who enjoy the romantic songs.

Among the tracks here are four of her five French #1 hits. Ya ya twist was an adaptation of Lee Dorsey's Ya ya. Chariot sold a million - Petula recorded a version with English lyrics called I will follow him, but it was Little Peggy March who took it up the charts in Britain and America. Coeur Blesse is a translation of John D Loudermilk's little-known song Torture. Romeo is a song of German origin which Petula had translated into both English and French - it was a huge hit in Britain as well. The only other French #1 hit came in 1967 with C'est ma chanson (This is my song) which is on volume five of this series.

In addition to the four #1 hits, A london was a French #9 hit and Les beaux jours reached #10 in France - it was a translation of Ramblin' rose, which was a British top five hit for Nat King Cole, though I'm not sure who had the American hit.

There are other translations of familiar songs here, too - Je chante doucement (Battle hymn of the republic), Bye bye mon amour (written by Gene Pitney but a huge international hit for Ricky Nelson), Tout au long du calendrier (Neil Sedaka's Calendar girl) and Claquez vos doigts (the R+B classic Snap your fingers). Jolie is a cover of Gently, which appeared on Elvis Presley's 1960 album.

These are all brilliant, but my favorite is L'enfant do. This translation of Leadbelly's Cotton fields is my favorite version of this song. Although not released as a single in France, it went to #1 in Singapore. It really rocks !!!!!

There are many excellent songs of French origin, some of Petula co-wrote. This collection, more than any other, explains Petula's popularity, not only in France but also in Quebec and other French-speaking communities around the world.

Why not buy the original albums?.......2004-07-04

The original "classic" albums are easily available on CD at rock-bottom prices (Beau Dommage, Où est passée la noce?, Un Autre jour arrive en ville & Passagers). In fact, if you were to buy them all at Amazon.ca, it would cost you less than $30! All of Beau Dommage's original period was of great quality, from the 2-minute "Assis dans cuisine" to the 20-minute "Un Incident à Bois-des-Filion", and everything in between! The only reason why one could/would limit him- or herself to this 2-CD set for $24.99 would be: a) can't be bothered having more than one Beau Dommage CD case, b) is also interested in the reunion album of 1994 (which does cost almost as much as this 2-CD set, depending on where you look), c) _maybe_ this set is remastered (I haven't heard myself, so I can't say). Still, you're missing out on a lot of great, classic Québécois folk/pop/rock/country-rock/(even prog-influenced!) music from their repertoire if you just buy this. However, I must applaud any collection that includes "Un Incident à Bois-des-Filion"... bold move! Hence three stars. The music itself is worth five stars and more. But why buy this when you can have all the classic output for a few dollars more?
