Period 15-piece ensemble Les Violons du Roy was founded by its director Bernard Labadie in 1984. They have recorded ten albums for the Dorian label, two of which have been awarded the prestigious Juno Award in Canada. This slightly reduced-price album is a compilation of those recordings, as well as an unreleased recording of a Handel Concerto Grosso from Op.6.

The albums sampled are Music Of Bach's Sons, Bach Art of the Fugue, Handel Apollo and Dafne, Bach Secular Cantatas, Vivaldi Concerti, Bach Goldberg Variations and Mozart Requiem. A fair proportion of the selections, the concertos in particular, are complete. Bach's Art of the Fugue and Goldberg Variations are arrangements by Labadie.

The instrumental works here are joyfully performed, with well-sprung rhythms and a light sprightly touch. This is a tight ensemble well-controlled by its director. J.C.F. Bach's Sinfonia is a delight and the Vivaldi concertos have a compelling forward motion - the Op.3/11 is especially distinctive. Soprano Karina Gauvin gives a touching account of the lovely "Felicissima quest'alma ch'ama sol la liberta" from Handel's Apollo and Dafne, where she is enveloped in a sea of pizzicato and accompanied by a playfully lyrical flute. Dorothea Roschmann's attractive soprano voice is well suited in a couple of fine arias from Bach's Coffee and Peasant cantatas. Mozart's Requiem has plenty of weight and fervour.

Recording quality varies just a little from one track to the next but overall is very good. The price point could arguably have been less, but there is nevertheless plenty of quality music to enjoy here.

If you like samplers, this is certainly a good one.

A Frenzied Tarantella.......2000-06-21

This is a great album from the Ramblers. Lost of fast, rhythmic folk music, much of it about the Mexican Revolution. Even if you don't understand any Italian, this album is a must-must have for those interested in world music.
