The Single Best Mexican Folk Collection.......2005-11-01

In the early 1970's, seeing that Mexican folk music was beginning to vanish, a group of young Mexico City intellectuals began to travel Mexico's backroads recording the traditional Mexican folk idiom known as the Son. In the 1980's, they formed their own record label known as Corason Records and put out a collection of records known as the Antologia del Son.

In my opinion, the very best records of the Anthology were dedicated to a regional variation of the Son, known as the Son Huasteco or the Huapango. This variation of the Son is played along the Atlantic Coast of Mexico from Tamaulipas in the North to Vera Cruz and Puebla in the South. The Huapango is usually played by a trio consisting of a requinto, huapanguero and a violin. The singing is characterized by a high falsetto.

With the exception of the Sones from Jalisco which became the Mariachi, Mexican Sones are rarely heard in the United States. In my opinion, the Sones from the Huasteca are the most beautiful in Mexico. They combine the high falsetto of the Gypsy Canto Hondo wtih the driving rthyms of Africa to creat something very special. If you have never heard a Huapango or a Son, purchase this album and it will really open your mind to the power of Mexican folk music. The works that make up the entire collection of the Antologia del Son are the best albums in my collection. The highest recommendation.

Superb huasteca music.......2000-07-19

Huasteca music is found in a cultural region of Mexico made up of at least two provinces. It is the most closely related to Spanish music and is becoming rarer. Luckily, there is a strong movement to preserve this unique form of Mexican folk music and this album is a superb example of authentic renditions both in the vocal and instrumental presentations. Any lover of Mexican folk music will enjoy this album tremendously and want it for his or her collection. There is a second album in this series available on Amazon.com that that I also highly recommend.

Another Great Record from the Corason Label.......2005-07-10

The Corason Label from Mexico is very similar to the Folkways Label produced by the Smithsonian Institute. The label specializes in the folk music of Mexico and the Carribean. Since the 1970's the producers at Corason have been travelling the backroads of rural Mexico recording the best traditional music artists.

Los Camperos de Valles are a trio who specializes in the Huapango music of the Huasteca Region of Eastern Mexico. The Trio plays acoustic instruments and sings in the high falsetto on the Son Huasteco. This is traditional Mexican folk music at its very best. Any record produced by the Corason Label is the gold standard by which Mexican and Carribean folk music must be judged. Be sure to check out their "Antologia del Son Mexicano", the single best series recordings ever made of Mexican folk music.

Great recording from masters of their genre........2000-01-07

If you haven't heard music from the Huasteca region of Mexico, this would make a wonderful introduction to the style. From the beautiful violin acrobatics and the complex but steady pulse of the jarana and huapanguera (instruments which are variations on the guitar), to the haunting falsetto of the voice, the listener will experience music which is quite different from the more well known styles of Mexican music.

Fine archival set of true, authentic Mexican music.......2005-01-23

I have a special fondness for the densely patterned, hypnotic ballad style of the son jarocho which comes from the Huasteca region of Mexico's Eastern central coast... This collection covers the wider regional music known as the "huapango," which intersects with the jarocho tradition, but also includes a wide variety of Mexican folk musics. There is some of the driving, percussive, ornate melodic sound of the sones jarochos, but branches out into starker, more informal styles as well, streetcorner chants and the like. This is a fine selection of deeply traditional, authentic Mexican music, perhaps in parts not as melodically striking as other recordings that highlight harps and guitars, but still quite rich in feeling and tradition. Includes tracks by artists such as the Trio Los Campos De Valles, Danza De Moctezuma, Trio Despertar Huasteco, and others. Definitely worth checking out!
