Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Y'all are crazy!.......2006-11-03

The Billy Porter duet is one of the most unique and thrilling songs on the cd. What a fantastic re-invention of that song. And their voices by themselves and together are glorious. Its all personal taste and by no means is that the only good song. Its probably THE best solo cd by a broadway artist. Incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02

Liz Callaway has one of the most enthralling voices around. Her voice is melodious and very soothing and especially shines in soft and subdued ballads. She doesn't have a big voice but she has an amazing range and sense of melody.

She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.

She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.

Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.

"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.

Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.

She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.

Grade= A

5 out of 5 stars Liz Callaway SOARS!.......2005-06-27

Wow! I love this cd! I went to a camp in Decatur, Illinois called Showchoir Camps of America. One night, as our evening entertainment, she performed this entire album!! That afternoon Ms. Liz came for a question and answer session with Phil Reno. She is such a down to earth person and sooo very talented! At the concert, I started to cry! During one song, Ms. Liz forgot the words to a song ( actually, I forgot what the song was called!), so she just made up some words to it!! If you want a TRUELY talented performer, Liz Callaway is the one for you!

5 out of 5 stars ....Love this album too!.......2004-08-18

I love this album. There are a few songs I kinda skip, because it was just weird. That song being "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair", weird. I loved the duet "Where is Love" from the musical Oliver. "Stop,Time" from the musical BIG (grab your puffs!). I enjoyed the 50's sounding "One Boy!" from Bye,Bye Birdie. Liz has a wonderful range, and flattering childish tone to her voice, reaching notes that would take me years of training to ever reach again! She has complied all these exciting songs and ends the album with "A Place Called Home", from A Christmas Carol. I could never give her enough praise. If you like Strisand, and Sintra, you'll love her too! :-) Liz is always shinning when she sings! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Unknown Talent Sings Unknown and Known Broadway Songs.......2003-06-10

... I thought I recognized the voice but I couldn't quite place it. I finally realized that she was the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated movie. Meg Ryan was the speaking voice. Liz Callaway has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and also a very strong voice. I love her rendition of Knowing When to Leave/Promises, Promises by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Great arrangements. Dionne Warwick, who I am also a fan of covered Promises, and the Carpenters sang a version of Knowing When to Leave. I'm also a Carpenters' fan. On this album all the songs are Broadway. Many I hadn't heard before but love now due to Liz. The first song, You There in the Backrow is a tribute to fans of shows. "Watch me sing my song for you" the words go. Liz makes you want to jump to your feet. Liz does a rendition of I' Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific, rock version. I can't say that's my favorite, but favorite to one of my friends. Since You Stayed Here, another unknown song to me, is quiet and hauntingly beautiful. Bette Midler does a version of this I think on her CD with From a Distance. She sings a duet with her sister, Ann Hampton Callaway who sings on Sibling Revelry with Liz. Ann wrote and sang the theme from The Nanny. The song Liz and Callaway and here sister does is Our Time. It's also on Sibling Revelry. Great duet. One of my favorites on the CD is Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim. The words are a plea to marry me, a little. The song is an almost a desperate plea to marry me but you don't have to make promises you don't want to, an open marriage? Make a few demands a few that I'm able to fulfill. She sings I'm ready. We won't have to give up a thing, we'll stay who we are the words say. Someone I'm Ready. I would give this song 5 stars on its own. It makes me cry because she sounds like she will settle but at the same time she wants the love fully. The arrngements on this album are unique. She sings I've Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun jazzy. Most of the other songs on the album are not known by most people. I can only say that Liz makes you want to see these shows and she pulls you in. I think I've become her biggest fan. I'm a singer too. I could see myself singing with her. I have her The Beat Goes On album too with sixties hits. I hope that people will get to know her because if you haven't heard this or her voice, you are going to be deprived of a remarkale clear strong voice. Buy this. I promise you won't be sorry! One more addition, Meadowlark. Spectacular! The story tells of someone hesitating because the time wasn't right and she learns from the story to live your life, climb every mtn.

5 out of 5 stars VW Can't miss.......2007-04-01

It would take a lot of effort to make these works anything but wonderful to my ( untrained) ear. I have other versions of Symphonies 3 & 5, Tallis, and Lark, but am not that familiar with the rest. I bought the CD set just to hear them. VW's music goes straight to my soul, perhaps because I was born about 40 km ( 25 miles ) from the composer. These works evoke instant nostalgia. Haintink, the orchestra , soloists, sound fine. I particularly enjoyed Ian Bostridge.

5 out of 5 stars Vaughan Williams the Great European Symphonist.......2004-12-15

2004 Has been a good year for Box Sets of Vaughan Williams Symphonies. Best of the bunch is this one from EMI with Bernard Haitink conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Do not be put off by the lengthy gestation of the project, over 16 years between 1984 and 2000, there is a consistency of interpretation, performance and sound.

Haitink's first recording in the set of the 7th Symphony, the Sinfonia Antarctica is his manifesto. He takes Vaughan Williams out of the cosy world of 20th century British music and the interpretive shadow cast by Adrian Boult and places him in an ongoing tradition of European symphonists. Haitink revels in the richness of the symphony's sound worlds and in the romantic heart which he finds in them all. These are rich, big boned interpretations. Nowhere more so than in this 7th Symphony, from the episodic feast of the first movement onwards, and there is surely no recording with a more appropriate acoustic.

The First in the cycle , `A Sea Symphony" is startling, as conductor, orchestra and singers burn a new way to the heart of this huge work with a searingly intense first movement.

The Second, A London Symphony has many fine recordings. Here the louder passages are brash, boisterous and thoroughly urban. Vaughan Williams loved city life and would surely have approved.

The Third, A Pastoral Symphony is one of the most striking reinterpretations here, and perhaps the hardest to take for traditionalists. Boult's mystical manipulation of blocks of chords with solo instruments floating above them is replaced with lyrical argument.

The furies at the heart of the Fourth Symphony are set free to great effect, as they are in the Sixth Symphony. Haitink excels in the demonic dance music in both symphonies and the jazz elements in the Sixth are enthusiastically articulated

If the interpretation of the Pastoral Symphony is striking, that of the 8th is a complete transformation, and one that convinces. No longer is this a small symphony, here it is the considerable utterance of a master.

The Fifth symphony is its radiant self, but the questions that also inhabit the score are welcomed, giving this performance light and shade.

The Ninth Symphony, sometimes considered a difficult work sounds like a natural summation of Vaughan Williams musical journey. It is a suitable epitaph, autumnal but radiating vigour.

There are a number of filler works here, like the Symphonies some are radical reinterpretations. I am not convinced by this Variations on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. In The Lark Ascending the programme is forgotten and it becomes a one movement concerto with a continuous violin line.

Haitink's interpretations are not for everyone. If you want modern a modern equivalent of Boult with good digital sound choose the Vernon Handley Set on Classics For Pleasure. That also has the benefit of a more generous selection of extra works. If you want to hear exciting modern performances in exemplary sound snap up this bargain box.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-04-29

I was drawn to this singer by the song featured in Final Fantasy VIII (which is an excellent game for those of you who haven't played) and I just loved this CD. I strongly suggest it to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars Mellow.Subtle.Country Folk?.......2001-09-27

I was a bit surprised at this one. It is very easy to dismiss this one as MOR/Folk etc..but the more I listen to it the more it grows on me..almost like Jagger/Stones doing a bit of country music ie.,Let it Bleed era. Very pretty songs as always..plus the disco/tabla Indian flavored number w/ her daughter gurgling etc. Cute sounding kid! Not my favorite but always a cut above anything else out there. Sting..watch your back as far as Pop diversity..this girl is on the prowl! Still highly recommended!

I bought this album about a year ago and I still play it very frequently! The thing is, you just won't get fed up of listening to her records! Her techniques and versatility are stunning! Track no.1 (Love Life) is very Maniac Street Preachers! It's great and is certainly a pleasure to listen to! Song no.2 (Face)is definitely the best! Her voice is brilliant, and the track won the Best Lyrics Award last year! The 3rd track (Sex Commandments), is again, performed with a different style. The song is wicked and somehow beautifully morbid! It was selelcted as one of the best 10 records in Hong Kong last year! Trust me, the first 3 tracks on the album are enough to satisfy...The front cover of the album is stunning, take a look and you will know why! To me, listenning to her songs is a whole new experience, and I am definitely looking forward to enjoy her upcoming works! EXCELLENT!

5 out of 5 stars Faye Wong is The Best Asian Artist! [Chang Yau(scenic tour)].......2000-02-07

This album is undoubtly one of the best Faye Wong albums ever. The new album 'Only Love Strangers' is ground breaking but this is a classic. The first track 'Love Life' is arranged very unusally with electronic hip hop rock and the talented voices of Faye wong vocals. The only love ballad, which is rather strange for Faye Wong and espeacially canto pop is 'Red Bean' or 'Constant Returns' on the cantonese 3 track bonus disc. 'Red Bean' follows the genre of 'Its a Date' and 'I don't want that Either' on Faye's previous albums. Its better than the formers but this track is especially emotional with the Lin Xi's lyrics. The track 'Fly' is refreshing to listen to. 'Little Genius' is rather specatcular with its syntesis arrangement. I love 'Love Boundary' on teh bonus disc its very mystic and trip-hip- hop rock and very much like the track 'Mystic Road ' on Faye's 95 album Di-Dar. 'Childhood' is wriiten by Faye Wong and so is 'Love Life. 'Childhood(tong)' features Faye's daughters Tong's voice and is a dance track. Overall this is a fantastic album like no other canto pop album and unlike any other asian artist. MUST BUY for fans and alike and a great intorduction to Faye's Music.

4 out of 5 stars Nice album though not the best of her.......2002-04-06

This album shows Faye's attitude of not-for-pleasing-the-majority in making music. Otherwise she would have produced tons of typical HongKong style ballads like many other popular HK singers have done. I esp. like the beatiful & operatic "Face"(track 2), she composed this by herself and sings it in falsetto voice. The style of this song is very rare in HK, I wonder who else has composed and performed some piece like this. Although this song sounds like it doesn't end very well I still enjoy the whole song. Other tracks I like are #9 "Red Beans", #4 "Give In", #1 "Love Life", etc.
Faye did sing some cover songs by Western artists, such as Tori Amos, in her early years as a singer, but I don't see any close connection between her own technique & style and those of the Western artists. She has developed some style and technique that are unique and original. Also her voice is one of a very few voices I adore and praise. Honestly speaking, I don't listen much to her early cover songs because they lack the uniqueness of her style and technique, but I see them as Faye's appreciation and promotion of some alternative Western music that she discovered and wanted to introduce to the HK audience who were not familiar with other types of music other than their typical ballads.

2 out of 5 stars What A Load Of Crock.......2002-02-06

Like most artists from Hong Kong, Faye is as manufactured as the come. And like most creative ideas out of Hong Kong (and East Asia, for that matter), it is merely a rip off from the West...in this case, Iceland. From the music, right down to the cover, it's Bjork. I see that she finally got out of her Tori Amos phase. This woman does not have a shred of originality. As Dennis Miller said at the MTV Music Awards after he introduced Faye Wong: "Faye Wong.... Please..."

    5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating!!.......2002-01-03

I was introduced to the delectable Faye Wong via the single "Eyes On Me". So enchanting was her voice, I decided to try some of her Chinese language songs even though I could not speak a bit of Chinese. I bought "Chang You" not expecting much, but ended up getting completely blown away. It resided in my disman unchallenged for months. Not only did her amazing voice left me enthralled, I was mesmerized by the rhythm, energy, and overall high production value of each individual song. Being a nonspeaker of the Chinese language allowed me to listen to the album from a unique perspective. By not understanding the lyrics, I eventually settled on making up my own. In the end I was left with wondrous songs backed by the powerful emotions that emanated from each song via Faye's angelic voice. To close, buy this album! You won't regret it.

    2 out of 5 stars I don't belive this is a genuine edition........2001-12-24

    I mean it.

    4 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Effort.......2000-09-07

Call me pretentious but I dun think any of the other reviews on this album is going to help, (I've read all of them)most people who actually bother to write a few sentences on this album are either Faye's loyal fans or someone who has just heard her music for the first time. My review of "Lovers & Strangers" is still the only one out there after so long, what are you fans doing? Now this is THE ONLY REVIEW THAT YOU NEED TO READ, full stop. This is a slightly more coherent album than `Love and Strangers'; then again, still, the songs have no connection to each other. This is one of the most serious problems with Hong Kong commercial releases, anyway, that's a materialistic society. Consumerism! Now, the coexistence of Consumerism and Communism is proved to be workable in HK. Perfect moneymaking strategy, round applause! On this album, Faye broke some grounds in terms of her vocal techniques, now she sounds like a cross between Elizabeth Fraser and some mezzo sopranos, which is considered otherworldly in the filthy Hong Kong entertainment circle. Her vocal on this album is still unparalleled by any other HK mainstream artists, what do you expect from such a money-sucking society? By the way, Faye Wong actually came from Beijing, China, she is not an indigenous Hongki, Thank God! The opening track, `Love Life' DOES NOT sound like Manic Street Preachers at all, instead, it is a melting pot of Britpop song style, ambient effect and pseudo-operatic vocal. Which is indeed very refreshing, however, this track is flawed, it could have a better tune. `Face' has extremely impressionistic lyrics, (dun bother if you are not Chinese) and mezzo-soprano like vocal, together with the ambient effect on the track, makes this a perfect track on the album. Take note of the arrangement of the song, especially the ending. `Sex Commandment' and its Cantonese cousin `Love Commandment' are essentially typical trip-hop with a beautiful female vocal. The former is more acoustic, sounds like Morcheeba fronted by Tori Amos or Elizabeth Fraser, the vocal sounds more angelic here, the latter sounds like something that could have appeared on one of those Geoff Barrow's side projects or something, darker, more ominous, more uneasy, the arrangement appears to be better here. `Give In' is a listenable commercial track, it used to be extremely popular in a lot of Asian radios, nothing special, just mellifluent. Again, its Cantonese sister (with the same family name) has some pretty unique percussion and arrangement, so the Cantonese track is more recommended. `Fly Away' is long, mesmerizing and ethereal. Everything that can describe the 4AD sound, especially the notoriously pretentious house project This Mortal Coil, is applicable to this track, the most otherworldly track ever out of Hong Kong? `Our Lord' sounds just like another one of those a girl with a guitar track. `Whimsical' is also one of my favorite tracks on the album, its trip-hop beat, the "whoop whoop" sound could be derived from the jungle sound (No, not in a Goldie's way, but the real jungle as there are a lot of trees there) and the vocal, which reminds me of Elizabeth Fraser, the obscure slurring/nagging during the bridge, but when it comes to the chorus part, playfulness and whimsicality comes in, "woo-la-la-la" suddenly she transforms her self into Dolores O'Riordan, of course, Faye sounds much better than that. Her voice is more like something derived from combining the vocal essence of Liz and Dolores, which is indeed extraordinary. After this track, you can almost forget about the next two tracks, they are just your usual Hong Kong pop songs that have more pop accessibility than your Shilling Dinosaur or Marry Ya Curry. The last track "Child" is probably the Hong Kong diva's first attempt to create some dance music, round applause. Too bad, obviously, she doesn't feel very much at home, and her baby's googling is utterly redundant, yes, I know it is a song about her baby and I know that is cute, but anything more than that? "Spectacular" is a much better song than "Child", check that out instead. "Chang You" sees Faye Wong at her vocal peak, it is less experimental than her latest offering or her classic album `Restless', However, from this album, we also see the diva trying to achieve a balance between the accessible and the experimental, which paves way for the Hong Kong underground artist to come over ground and diversify the monotonous and horrendously dull Hong Kong pop. Some remarkable achievement!
