4 out of 5 stars Coppelia.......2007-07-27

I ordered two DVD versions of Coppelia along with this CD in order to learn the choreography from the ballet. My only complaint about this CD is that the music is considerably faster than either of the orchestras have played the score on the DVDs. This makes it difficult to learn the choreography with out slowing down the CD on a variable speed CD player.

5 out of 5 stars A full-length Coppelia at an appealing price.......2003-06-26

Andrew Mogrelia has conducted a number of full-length ballets for Naxos: Giselle, Sylvia, Sleeping Beauty, and this Coppelia. I own all of them, because I find Mogrelia is one of those rare conductors who make a ballet sound like a ballet.
In concert hall versions, conductors often make ballet music impossibly fast, or simply too unpredictable. (Gergiev's Nutcracker is in this category: fun to listen to, definitely NOT a dancer's Nutcracker.) But when dancers are on stage, they need a regular, dependable beat to dance to. Mogrelia's Coppelia never sounds sing-song, because he uses dynamics so skillfully - but he does conduct at an authentic dance tempo.
Another Coppelia I like and own is Mark Ermler's (ASIN: B0000024CL), but while it's much more than highlights it is not the full ballet. The first act mazurka is missing, and that's a definite loss.
La Source is a bit of an oddity because it was originally commissioned as a sort of competition: half composed by Minkus, half by Delibes. Delibes was generally considered the winner, so he stayed in Paris while Minkus went off to Russia. This album is strictly Delibes, so it's only highlights from La Source. But it does include my favorite, the utterly charming Pas des Fleurs, Grande Valse.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired ballet music at a bargain price........2002-07-13

Although I'm not particularly fond of watching ballets I have a special love for ballet music, and Coppelia is one of my favorites. It is the masterpiece of Leo Delibes who was one of the greatest of ballet composers. Even Tchaikovsky -- probably the greatest ballet composer of all -- greatly admired Delibes' work. This recording presents not only the complete music for Coppelia but also the lovely, but seldom-heard, music Delibes wrote for La Source -- both conducted by the excellent ballet conductor Andrew Mogrelia. And at a bargain price to boot. Please don't pass up this special treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Performance.......2000-08-27

I search for the recording for the complete Coppelia when my daughter's dance school was practicing for it. I found this item. Performance was meticulous. It was recorded in the Orchestra's concert hall over a period of almost two weeks. All digital recording. Well balanced orchestra. Fine details. A good item to collect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of enjoyable rarities.......2005-08-13

Before I get verbose here I'll start with this: the superb performance of the cantata "The Greek Revolution" in this set alone is worth the price of the entire set. This is very early Berlioz but it contains some astonishing things, including a big ending "The Summit of Olympus"--a classic snowballing "call-to-arms" that would make anyone want to go out and battle the Turk--that consistently avoids the trite and obvious and contains ideas about generating excitement a modern rut-ridden choral composer like Philip Glass should pay close attention to. Fornet's recording of this on Denon is also nice and brings out the detail better, and is very powerful, but ultimately isn't as viscerally rousing. Savvy conductors know that even youthful Berlioz contains great stuff.

Anyway:

It's a bit sad that Berlioz is known to many listeners only through a handful of works like the Symphonie Fantastique (his most famous, yet an early work), maybe the Requiem and Harold in Italy, and a few other items (the short list seems to vary from person to person but it's always short). Sad, because unlike some other composers who are one or two trick ponys, Berlioz was a continuously strong and imaginative composer, in fact he was a great composer, up there with the best of them, who let loose with a long string of masterpieces that still need attention--like his opera Benvenuto Cellini and twenty other things. The man, even when trying to write boring music, was incapable of writing boring music. Then there's his incredible writing: his autobiography, his criticisms, his satires. He's not only one of my very favorite composers but one of my very favorite writers too. There's no other composer I can say that about.

So what's up with him, and why should you pay attention to this pricey collection of unknowns? Jacques Barzun, another favorite writer and an authority on Berlioz, thinks the Frenchman was so advanced in his ideas that he's been thoroughly misunderstood and grotesquely underappreciated up until fairly recently. Even Donald Francis Tovey, an insightful musical commentator (and another favorite writer--his books are highly recommended) of over 100 years ago talks of Berlioz as if, at times, he didn't known exactly what he was doing. There's an awful comment by him about how Berlioz allegedly knew how to start and end a piece but got a bit lost in between. How untrue. Barzun, on the other hand, mentions an incident where some critic complains about a series of wrong (meaning incompetently judged and not conforming to theory of that time) chords used in Harold in Italy and the response by a sharp conductor was "So tell me then why they sound so right?" (Someone later did a proper modern analysis and found the chord use was subtle and brilliant) Barzun's point, in a wonderful essay "Berlioz after a Hundred Years" (In "Critical Questions")is that we have yet to totally figure out why so much of his music sounds right. I'd also add that we are only just maybe starting to learn how to make it sound right. Berlioz was smart, possibly smarter than any of us and it's taking us 200 years to catch up with him.

[My guess at one explanation of his greatness was his total mastery of the very poetic French language and his ability to translate that into a sort of music. His melodies often sound like someone speaking. Elliot Carter is another great composer who is intensely literate and a fine writer... and a great composer perhaps for similar reasons.]

I'll go even further, after 30 years of listening to his music I'm convinced he stands at the top platform with the handful of all-time great composers. Berlioz transformed Western art music--single-handedly--into a supple, breathing, colorful, and living thing, and in a way that few composers have managed since. Moving from the Masters (Bach through Beethoven) to Berlioz is like moving from great oil painting to motion pictures in Technicolor and that's about the best way I can describe the phenomenon (Barzun notes his unique multidimensionality). Listen to Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and then listen to Benvenuto Cellini. The music, over 150 years old and only about 50 years older than Mozart's sounds totally modern, and often modern like a modern that hasn't even happened yet. Listen to Schumann's "Faust" (and I dearly love Schumann) and listen to Berlioz's and be shocked. The Schumann version sounds like flat soda in comparison. The only other composer I've encountered whose music has this same visceral "aliveness" (at times) is Shostakovich. Oddly, Berlioz can make even the mighty Strauss sound wooden and fussy (some would say Germanic).

The argument then is one shouldn't avoid anything by Berlioz and one should shop around to find recordings by conductors who understand his music (Gad! Solti doing Faust is stunning)and orchestras who can handle the twists, turns and other race car demands of the scores. This collection of choral works, many rare, many early (keeping in mind the ever-popular Fantastique is early too), is excellent with the only drawback being that a few, lovely as they are, don't showcase his best compositional assets. He was, regardless, a striking choral composer as Colin Davis noted during the recording sesssions for "Cellini." Personally, I never cared much for choral music or even opera until I forced myself to listen to the non-orchestral Berlioz. Well, at least I like HIS stuff in these genres! Everything about this disc is first-rate: performances, conducting (Plasson is an excellent Berlioz conductor) and sound. The only complaint is the cover art is awful. It looks like someone at EMI wanted to save a few bucks so they hired a vaguely talented teenage niece or something to handle it.

Finally, unlike most collections of rarities and odds and ends by composers--even the best of them--this is a set of discs I drag out, play, and enjoy regularly.

5 out of 5 stars eyewatering :*(.......2006-04-29

Requiems seem to me to be intense, dark or depressing; however this one is more sad than dark. It's obvious that Richafort was heartbroken when his hero Josquin died, especially when hearing the first 10-12 minutes of his requiem. It's also obvious that Richafort, as someone else said, was truly a master in his own right to be able to write music like this. I don't think it sounds like Josquin though. The long, effortless lines (in the beginning anyway) make me think of Palestrina instead. Midway through the graduale the requiem becomes slightly faster and more intense. Among the other tracks, as others have mentioned the Salve Regina & Tru Tru Tru Avant also stand out. Tru Tru Tru Avant is fun to listen to, and somewhat surprising to me since the rest of the album is fairly serious. The Salve Regina is also a masterpiece, but the Requiem is still the centrepiece of this album for sure. I only wish the Huelgas Ensemble included the motet Quem Dicunt Homines on the disc. It is allegedly another masterpiece which is mentioned in the liner notes a few times, but not recorded.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2006-03-17

Impeccable blend and tone is possesd by the Huelgas Ensemble in this recording of the otherwise unknown Jean Richafort. His requiem was unlike any choral work i've heard previously, Renaissance or otherwise. A phenomenal piece, guaranteed to please. The other tracks are great as well.

5 out of 5 stars neglected masterpiece.......2003-01-16

Jean Richafort's stunning requiem a 6 was written in memorial for his contemporary; Josquin. They are similar stylistically but from the first few seconds of the introitus the awareness dawns that one is in the presence of a fully fledged master in his own right. Imagine Josquin but transformed into smoother, more mannered lines, more intricate and subtle counterpoint and a manipulation of voicing and sonority quite unlike anything else you've heard. The architecture is still there but one becomes so bewitched by the sonic filigree unfolding that one scarcely notices. The whole requiem is very quiet and serene, beautifully paced and with a pliant expressiveness that makes you wonder where this manuscript has been hiding all this time. (Well done Paul van Nevel!)
Probably the most interesting feature of the requiem in my opinion is that each of it's movements wind down softly to end on plagal cadences (chord IV-1) compared to the ubiquitous perfect (chord V-1). I don't know of anywhere else in classical music where this device is employed so consistently and beautifully. The effect as the last notes dissolve into nothingness is unforgettable and will leave you with the realisation that perfect cadences are way to harsh on the ear in comparison!!
This sole recording of the requiem has amazing clarity, presence and depth to complement the ensemble's superb purity, balance and general culture. It will leave you panting for their next project...

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous recording of an unjustly neglected composer.......2002-07-15

For a composer whose works served as models for some of the greatest composers of his day--Morales, Gombert, and Palestrina, to name a few--Jean Richafort is surprisingly little known today. This recording attempts to change this, offering a selection of motets and chansons along with the stunning Requiem mass Richafort wrote to commemorate Josquin Desprez's death in 1521. The Huelgas Ensemble's characteristically warm, rich tone serves the works (especially the Requiem and the Salve) well, lending them a contemplative, spiritual air that puts one in mind of the vast cathedrals and monestaries in which they would have been sung. The chansons, on the other hand, have a bounce and vivacity in keeping with their worldly nature. (The drinking song "Tru, Tru, Trut Avant," probably my favorite track on the album, has so much energy and is so catchy that it will make you want to dance, and will likely make you thirsty as well.) This isn't the only Richafort CD available (the Chapelle du Roi have also released one), but it is certainly the best. (The Chapelle's counter-tenor is very noticeable, and their blend is less seamless than that of the Huelgas Ensemble, although their Latin is a little easier to understand.) The only other thing I can say against the Huelgas recording is that it lacks the "Quem Dicunt Homines" Paul Van Nevel makes so much of in the liner notes, which would have been nice to hear; nonetheless, all of the pieces on the recording are well worth hearing, so this is not much of a complaint. All told, the ensemble's impeccable blend, tone, and musicality do a marvelous job of bringing one of the most talented composers of the Renaissance out of obscurity, and make this CD a must have for lovers of Early Music and choral music alike.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

          Amazon.com

This CD of choral music by Poulenc is a stunning study of textures; every so often you may think you hear an instrument, so flavorful are the timbres of the voices and the manner in which Poulenc uses them. This is serious music--"Un soir de neige" and "Figure humaine" were composed during World War II--and the subjects of the poems can be bleak, but they are endlessly inventive in their harmonies and rhythms. The St. Francis prayers are for male voices only and their dark hue offers moments of peace and solitude. And the CD ends with a drinking song asking the male voice to descend to great depths in a thoroughly jolly fashion. The Sept Chansons, from 1936, have Debussy-like moments, and the alternation of soli and chorus just adds to the colors. The performances are perfect, with the German RIAS-Kammerchor singing with impeccable French diction under Daniel Reuss. An unusual, valuable, enchanting disc. --Robert Levine
