4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-07-15

Sister Bossa's a good series of nu-bossa cuts provided by one of the giants of the Italian jazz release scenes, Irma. The series spans 6 volumes right now and with each one, you are surprised by a few of the cuts on them - for better and worse! I'll always give the nod though to their experimentation.

Volume five is very good. It has a pretty fresh and free Brazil feel to many of the cuts; obviously, I guess. So it's not all "Brazil". Max Sedgley's "Happy" is given a nice face-lift with a change in tempo as the cut speeds up to bring on the album. LTJ X-Perience's "Vamos Pra La" has a quick beat and for whatever reason, brought a memory of seeing a SPFC match. Other cut that took this cd away were Soul Quality Quartet's spirited and fresh "Como Antes". Almaz Yebio was perfect for that track and I HIGHLY recommend their CD titled "Dip". Arcoiris was the perfect follow-up to it with "Agora Tento". The CD winds down nicely with Gazzara feat Ithamara Koorax & Paulo Servio Valle in "Verdade Ou Magia". Very nice song, but of course I'm biased because Ithamara Koorax is a very nice person and Gazzara's a great musician!

I recommend this. It's similar to the other volumes but IMO it's more polished. Also keep in mind that this cd actualy came out in September of 2004 - it's a bit late to arrive on Amazon and the USA. Volume 6 came out less than a month ago, and it is a double disc set, featuring cuts by some of the artists here along with Bossa Nostra and Cris Delanno. But IMO the vibe on volume 6 is far more club oriented than this one. Finally... if you do enjoy this, you'll probably want to check out some of the other Irma Bossa compilations, and the last three volumes of the Bossa N' Go series.
