4 out of 5 stars Ute razzle dazzles in this superb collection.......2004-09-23

What an awesome French record from the German songstress!! While this is a little more pop than what one might expect from Ms. Lemper it is still a very brilliant and gorgeous record. The duet with Art Mengo Parler d'amour is a standout as is the title track, a luscious ballad; there is a cabaresque track, Mes deux amants, and Ute even gets funky on track #6, La vague a femme. A must have for Ute fans, although if you are only into the more classical, theatrical material you may not enjoy this one.

3 out of 5 stars Lemper's ups and downs..........2000-02-12

This is an interesting piece by Ute Lemper. If you're a fan of her music you'll surely find this album amusing, even though it would hardly be considered her best.

This is another face of a changing woman who's most known for her theatrical albums and her wonderful voice. Here is her pop side, sometimes way too pop...

Still there are a few remarkable songs such as the powerful 'La Peur', the very stylish 'Espace Indécent', and the really tasty 'La vague a femme'... A nice work, even though she has better ones.

1 out of 5 stars Misses badly.......1999-11-19

Ute Lemper is a fine singer, but I can't get past the repellent smooth jazz arrangements and generally lackluster songwriting here - it's not even good pop. Buy this only if you're such a Lemper fan that you have to have everything she's put out.

5 out of 5 stars Dazzling Cabaret-Pop.......1998-09-25

Ute Lemper is a dazzling performer whatever she does. Listeners are most used to her doing her Kurt Weill and Cabaret numbers. In 'Espace Indecent' she is in sophisticated, elegant pop mode. But the result satisfies owing to her velvety style and the quality of the musicianship -- it's not just synthesised wallpaper -- it's stylish semi-cabaret. And sexy. Impressive even to non-pop fans.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Wonder From French Musical.......2007-05-12

Yes, we do not understand the language, but no, it does not prevent us from enjoying it. Le Petit Prince is another French musical that reminds people there is more than just Llyod Webber who can bring classical masterpiece writing into the musical stage. It's a bit on the high-end, but the content is proven well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection. Absolument exquis!.......2006-08-07

This is a gorgeous soundtrack. Almost every song is beautiful. There is so much emotion here. Richard Cocciante and Elisabeth Anais did an incredible job with this. And, the cast is absolutely phenomenal. I can listen to this over and over again without tiring of it.

Daniel Lavoie is perfect as always. Cathialine Andria has a beautiful voice. Jeff is just wonderful as the Prince. Richard Cocciante's melodies are wonderful. I can't even say with certaintly which song is best. They are all so very wonderful. This is just an exquisite piece of music. Entirely perfect.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful soundtracks you will ever hear!.......2005-09-19

Wow! I honestly can't say enough about this CD. For a start, I'd like to say that Le Petit Prince is one of the greatest and most beautiful stories in existence. Richard Cocciante being one of the most wonderful and tallented composers on Earth, it is a match made in heaven.

I first heard about this while researching Notre Dame de Paris (another fabulous musical), and I'm so thankful that I did! Le Petit Prince is the only soundtrack I have ever listened to that has made me cry the first time I heard it. The music is powerful, yet sweet and gentle at the same time. The lyrics are breathtaking (that is, for those who actually speak French; I would recommend this soundtrack to anyone regardless, but it makes all the difference if you can understand the language). The recording provides enough dialogue for listeners to follow the Little Prince's journey. The story is sweet, witty, touching, inspiring, and ultimately evokes a profound sadness and nostalgia, all of which comes through in Cocciante's music.

I have to say that, incredibly, my biggest surprise was not Daniel Lavoie, who plays the pilot. I already knew Daniel Lavoie to be a beautiful performer, and he does not disappoint on this recording. He seems to caress each note with his tender, resonating voice, and delivers his songs with powerful and breathtaking emotion. However, my greatest joy actually came from little Jeff, who plays the title character. His perfect technique and astoundingly pure voice is enough to compete with even the great Daniel Lavoie, and his sensational "Près d'Elle" brought me to tears. The rest of the cast is more than capable of backing up their two superstars, and each performer gives a brilliant performance.

I cannot possibly convey the magic of this piece to words. I would recommend this soundtrack to any music-lover, French-speaking or otherwise. It is a wonderful soundtrack to play for children, and even more sentimental for adults. This is a gift that you will cherish forever. "N'oublie pas mon secret: On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux. C'est le temps que tu a perdu pour ta rose qui fait ta rose si importante." Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars **An Interesting Listen...**.......2004-09-28

This double CD of the classic children's story by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry leaves you feeling oddly satisfied. Luckily, this recording covers the entire musical, so it's not as confusing as it might be. The main star in this recording is undoubtedly Daniel Lavoie of Notre Dame fame. He plays the Aviator, and plays it extrememly well. His polished and smooth voice plays well in any ear, and this CD also shows that he is an excellent actor as well. His co-star, Jeff, is extremely talented for a boy his age. Some of the better numbers are: "Pres D'Elle", where Jeff sings of his longing for the Rose with his high voice. "Adieu" is also a pretty ditty. But yet of course, we cannot forget Mr. Lavoie with his "Ephémères" is his big number. And finally, there is the moving duet: "On Aura Toujours Rendez-vous." I would suggest this musical to anyone who has an interest in Daniel Lavoie or Notre Dame de Paris!!

This CD is absolutely amazing. I am eighteen years old and I strongly dislike musicals; I don't enjoy watching them, and I don't enjoy listening to the music. But my french teacher played this cd for us in class after reading the book and I was blown away. The composition, the lyrics, and the amazing vocal talent that fills this CD makes it a must-listen for anyone who is a fan of Le Petit Prince, musicals, or anyone who speaks french. Even if you don't (though that leaves out the moving lyrics), this CD is just amazing. It's more than worth it to have it shipped over from france.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of superb.......2006-02-14

Beautiful music. Lyrics faithful to the original. Exceptional performances. Simply magic.

5 out of 5 stars Formidable!.......2005-12-20

As a high school teacher of French, I played the CD in my advanced French class with some initial concerns as to how it would be received. I have been going over the lyrics and playing each song individually to the class. MY CLASS HAS BEEN BLOWN AWAY! Several boys want to buy the CD for themselves. One girl wants to sing a song for our school's annual talent show. They love the voice of the Little Prince and ask me to play his songs frequently. Several students have become big fans of the book and their enthusiasm is making the class very delightful.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2003-01-28

This CD is wonderful. I saw the musical twice while I was in France, and couldn't get enough of it. The music is soothing, yet brings out all the intense joy and emotion of the book. Daniel LaVoie and Jeff do amazing jobs with the songs, and each song is a new discovery. I highly reccomend this CD to anyone, even if they don't speak French.

2 out of 5 stars Picks and chooses the wrong stuff........2002-12-07

First of all, the Petit Prince segment of this CD is only 30 minutes long. So, if you're thinking that you're getting the whole book on CD, think again, because you're not. What you'll find is all of the sentimental rot with all of the joy cut out and disposed of. The Petit Prince only visits one planet, and all of the delightful repartee is axed in favor of the weepy bits about foxes and roses. If you're the kind of person that read the book to cry, and not because it reads like some sort of messed up cutesy French ... trip, then buy this CD because it will make you morose and boring.

The other selections on the CD are similarly weepy. They chose one of Fontaine's Fables, but of course it was Deux Pigeons and not any of his nastier stuff - I'm assuming because they didn't want to ruin the sentimental and boring aspect of the CD in favor of something with more gritty appeal. Maybe it's supposed to be a kid's CD. I don't know.

On the up side, the narrators voice is pleasant to listen to, if a tad annoying when trying to make himself laugh. (It sounds forced and patronizing.)

If you're buying this CD to practice your French comprehension skills, then go ahead. If you're planning to read along with the book, get out a hi-lighter, because the here and there nature of the recording means that ALL of the description is left out in favor of dialogue, and you're only getting about a third of the book. For whatever it's worth, it helped my French, though made me a bit angry in the process.

      5 out of 5 stars Pristine musicality!.......2006-08-10

Despite of the fact I have always wondered around the prestigious performance of Efrem Kurtz as suggestive depicter of atmospheres and dreamy sonorities, the time has not placed him in a better place at the moment to make any account of genuine brilliantness and sheer musical architect. Kurtz was undeniably, a genuine colorist, one of these directors of the lineage of Anatole Fistulari or Isaac Dobrowen for instance, a fine conductor whose radiant imagination fitted as ring to finger in this peerless and gild version. The Philharmonia Orchestra as always featuring a remarkable performance.

This record constitutes by itself a magnificent opportunity to approach him. Don't miss this celebrated performance.

4 out of 5 stars Expert theatrical conducting from Kurtz.......2006-05-22

The Russian-born Efrem Kurtz was a famous conductor in the ballet pit, as the review below makes clear. Like antal Dorati and Robert Irving, two other estimable conductors who had a precise feeling for danceable rhythms, Kurtz puts a spring in every number on this bargain two-fer. But the late-Fifties sound is a bit thin and edgy, and since these are excerpts and not complete ballets, they compete against some great Tchaikovsky conductors in the symphonic vein: Karajan and levine are faovrites of mine in this repertoire (their selection of excerpts is only half as long as Kurtz's, however).

Certainly I would prefer Kurtz over Andre Previn, who also has bargain offerings of these three ballets on EMI but sounds earthbound by comparison. John Lancbery's super-bargain disc of excerpts from Swan Lake is another good alternative--EMI is bursting at the seams with Tchaikovksy ballets once you count in the Sawallisch accounts from Philadelphia, which are at least as good and better played than the Previn.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky From One of The Great Ballet Conductors.......2005-05-09

Efrem Kurtz (1900-1995), born in St. Petersburg and a student of Glazunov, was one of the great Russian ballet conductors. This excellent 2-disc EMI set contains excerpts from Tchaikovsky's three great Ballets: Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. Recorded 1958-59 in London's late lamented Kingsway Hall, these performances sound better here than they did on my old Seraphim LPs. Frankly, they sound better than most recent digital recordings, too: warm and clear sonics, with realistic balances. These are beautifully-shaped and subtly-phrased readings, and the Philharmonia back then was one of the world's greatest ensembles. The violin solos in Swan Lake are played with great sensitivity by Yehudi Menuhin.

Kurtz made too few recordings. Most of them were with the Philharmonia and included a scorching Shostakovich 10th (on Testament - see my review). Another indispensable example of his mastery was a 2-disc CD set of Russian music in EMI's deleted "Artist Profile" series, which I felt was generally a more successful recording enterprise than the recent IMG "Great Conductors" series.

Besides Kurtz, here are some other conductors who had a great affinity for Tchaikovsky's ballet music:

      1. JOHN LANCHBERY, born 1923 in London, was head of Sadler's Wells and was chief conductor at the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden. He recorded my favorite complete versions of all three Tchaikovsky ballets for EMI (1982, with the Philharmonia) . They were later issued on 8 well-transferred CDs by MHS (currently out of print). Many serious ballet connoiseurs (I'm just a casual listener who doesn't attend ballets with any frequency) feel that Lanchbery had the most unerring sense of DANCEABLE tempos and theatrical drama in the business. I definitely prefer Lanchbery to Previn, who bores me to tears, and to Dorati's fast and hard-boiled Mercury recordings (although his readings are highly regarded in some quarters). Some excerpts from Lanchbery's sets have appeared on Seraphim CDs, but they suffer from that budget label's typically dull transfers .

      2. ROGER DESORMIERE (1893-1963), France's leading ballet conductor, recorded (early 1950's) excerpts from all three ballets. The performances have a sophisticated elan that remains unique. The EMI CD issues of Swan Lake & Nutcracker (the latter is my favorite version of just the suite) are out of print, but some wonderful Sleeping Beauty selections are still available on Testament (see my review).

      3. ANATOLE FISTOULARI (1907-1995), a child prodigy who conducted Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" Symphony in Kiev when he was age 7 (!), recorded lovely excerpts from Swan Lake & Nutcracker in the 1950's with the London Symphony. Those fine mono Decca recordings have yet to make it to CD (mine are part of a 5-LP Richmond set called "The World's Greatest Ballet Music"). Sidenote: Fistoulari married Mahler's daughter Anna.

      4. YURI FAYER (1890-1971), another Kiev-born conductor, was chief conductor of the Bolshoi Ballet for about four decades before retiring in 1963. He conducted over 400 (!) performances of Swan Lake, and in the early 1950's he made largely complete recordings of all three ballets. These appeared in the U. S. on the Colosseum LP label (pretty lousy dubs of Soviet originals). Hopefully, some reputable label will get them out on CDs in decent sound. They are marvelous performances.

Stokowski recorded Tchaikovsky on various labels - his Sleeping Beauty excerpts on Cala 0522 are outrageously mannered and absolutely GREAT fun. Knappertsbusch's Nutcracker Suite with the Vienna Phil. (Decca) is surprisingly engaging. Beecham's witty 1958 live Nutcracker Suite (op. 71a) can be heard on M&A CD 631. Tchaikovsky's ballet music is a very pleasant way to compare the merits of various conductors from the past.

      Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific Tchaikovsky.......2003-07-19

This is a terrific CD of highlights from Tchaikovsky's great ballets, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, by Efrem Kurtz and the Philharmonia Orchestra, originally recorded in the late 1950s. There are many great recordings of the ballet highlights available on one CD -- some notables are by Karajan, Previn, Bernstein, Rostropovich and Ansermet (see my review of the latter) -- but few that stretch the highlights out over two CDs. This is great for someone who does not want the complete ballets (which occupy five to six discs), but does want a little more music than the oft-heard nuggets. This Double Forte set also has appeal for the serious collector because Kurtz and the Philharmonia always made memorable music together. I have enjoyed comparing this disc of highlights to those by Markevitch and Weldon with the Philharmonia (see my review of the latter) in order to listen to the same orchestras play the same music from approximately the same time period, yet with different conductors. There are many great choices available when it comes to excerpts of the Tchaikovsky Ballets, but if you are a novice or a connoisseur you won't be disappointed with this account by Kurtz.
